Anti-Ligature Handrails

Yeoman Shield, trading name of Harrison Thompson & Co Ltd

Yeoman Shield Anti-Ligature handrail system is being utilized in a newly commissioned dementia unit in South Wales.Ysbyty George Thomas, as part of Cwm Taf Health board’s Valley Life Initiative, has recently undergone a refurbishment to become a health and wellbeing centre for people with cognitive and memory problems.Throughout the design process of the new Dementia Unit, comfort and functionality for clients who would be accessing the area was paramount. Not only were aesthetics taken into consideration with a stunning welsh valleys mural wallpaper installed in between bright colourful “front doors” but safety aspects were of a prime concern. For safeguarding measures Yeoman Shield’s Anti- Ligature Guardian Handrail was chosen, as both a supportive and wall protection rail system, along the main corridor of Ysbyty George Thomas as well as through the Dementia Unit. This Anti-Ligature handrail has a continuous fixing block which runs the full length of the back of the rail eliminating any points that can easily have a length of material or cord wound around it, preventing the possibility of harm to patients. To ensure that the terminating ends of the handrail are not used in a similar way, a tightly fitted wall return is added to totally enclose the ends allowing no gaps between the wall and the rail.Supplied in a dark grey colour as a good contrast to the light wall colour scheme, the Guardian Handrail also dovetailed perfectly into the wall paper design by resembling the top of the depicted drystone walling.“We are exceptionally pleased with the new Dementia Unit and the complementing look, quality and functionality of the Yeoman Shield Anti-Ligature Guardian Handrail.” Commented Jeanne Smith, Directorate Support Manager, Mental Health, Cwm Taf University Health Board

Easy Glass Max glass balustrade + Q-lights Linear Light LED for handrails- Leeds University

Q-railing

Modernising historic properties can bring major challenges. The architects at Fuse Studios gave careful consideration to this question as they prepared for a refurbishment of the Fine Arts building at Leeds University. Early on, the new access ramp at the front entrance was identified as an important visual centrepiece. The architects opted to use Q-railing products, including an LED-lit handrail, when creating an ultra-safe glass railing for the ramp. Q-railing recommended the Easy Glass Max system. It is highly robust, meeting all the relevant safety requirements with ease, and yet provides an uninterrupted glazed area.

Yeoman Shield, trading name of Harrison Thompson & Co Ltd

Lambton House Care Home in County Durham, has taken extreme care in designing a home that caters for the lifestyle of their older generation clients. Creating beautiful décor, relaxing lounges and spacious light living areas which are constantly maintained and cleaned to a high level. With the hygienic concerns that have been magnified with the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, as part of their infection control improvement projects, Lambton House connected with Yeoman Shield to carry out the replacement of damaged wooden handrails with a PVCu alternative. The wooden handrails not only looked unsightly but were becoming a problem when it came to the care home’s thorough cleaning regime. With the varnish peeling and cracks and dents forming, a perfect haven was being developed for the incubation of bacteria & viruses, that were difficult for cleaning cloths etc. to get into.Yeoman Shield supplied their Guardian 50 mm diameter handrails as a hygienic alternative replacement.Manufactured from a rigid PVCu the handrail is resilient to abrasion and impact damage preventing scratches and scrapes that can promote the growth of bacteria. The warm-to–the-touch circular handrail has a non-porous surface which is easy to clean and can be wiped down with commercial strength cleaner without affecting the colour or finish of the product.Yeoman Shield Guardian 50mm Diameter handrail is available in a choice of colours that easily dovetail into existing or new décor schemes helping to achieve a warm and homely, less sterile, ambience.Lambton House added colour strips, in dementia friendly colours, to sit behind the rails as part of the pathfinding scheme throughout, assisting residents in locating their bedrooms and other services around the building.Lambton House Infection Control Project Manager, Glen Pickering stated“Infection Prevention and Control is of paramount importance to all of us here at Lambton House.“We are delighted to have partnered with Yeoman Shield for the upgrade of our handrails throughout the care home. We have been extremely impressed with Yeoman Shield’s professional approach to working with us. Q-line stainless steel baluster railing adds to waterfront entertainment venue

Q-railing

Club Venu is a premier destination for dining, dancing, arts and culture. Set in a beautiful waterfront location, it’s undoubtedly one of the most stunning attractions in North Wales. The architectural plan included a roof terrace on the second floor, which incorporated a balustrade. In total, more than 40 metres of stainless steel Q-line balustrade with glass clamps, handrails and offset handrail brackets were mounted. Modern and minimal in appearance, this solution nevertheless offered considerable time and cost savings. The exterior balustrade delivered unbeatable safety without sacrificing transparency. The result is a stunning, uninterrupted view of the waterfront.

Berry Systems

The Ruskin Square car park in Dingwall Road was fully modernised to help accommodate growing car parking needs. It is conveniently located to local attractions such as the Whitgift Shopping Centre and BoxPark Croydon. With these local retail and leisure facilties on the car park’s doorstep, it was necessary to ensure that it is secure and compliant for all its users. The car park itself is fully accessible 24 hours a day, 7 days a week so safety was a key priority throughout the project. It houses 565 parking bays for people to use and resembles an effective resource in the local area to provide access to these key sites. We ensured that all of the products specified on the project were fit for purpose and met the client’s needs. We installed a combination of RB1X posts, handrail, mesh and our patented BS EN 6180 restraint strap to create a total solution. Pedestrian protection was a key priority so we specified our BS EN 6180 restraint strap that offers limited deflection on the handrail from pedestrian loading. The strap reinforces the handrail to provide additional protection to the vehicle restraint system.

Mono M311 Glass Infill Top FixMono M351 No Infill Top FixOrbis OS200 Vertical Bar Infill Side FixPart of a £71 million scheme to construct three new academy schools in the area, Oldham Academy North was designed by Manchester-based architects, Aedas and constructed by Willmott Dixon. The school features a striking glass frontage for the triple height atrium reception with a brick clad teaching block to one side and a vibrant purple frontage to the other. The feeling of light and space created by the school’s two atriums is carried through by HiBuild coated Mono system balustrades with stainless steel handrails. These enable the creation of safe viewing galleries/walkways, overlooking the open plan library mezzanine and the central ‘Agora’ theatre space. The same system was used to create the handrails for the school’s six staircases, maximising natural light and enhancing transparency as students and staff move around the building. Delta Balustrades worked collaboratively with the design team to ensure that the balustrades and handrails not only meet the aesthetic requirements for the scheme but that the fixing detail for the atriums fully comply with loading requirements.
