Delivering a local early flood warning and monitoring system to keep people, homes and businesses safe for Kirklees Council

Delivering a local early flood warning and monitoring system to keep people, homes and businesses safe for Kirklees Council

Andel Ltd

Slaithwaite suffered extensive flood damage in 2015 after a blocked debris screen caused Crimble Clough Stream to back up, demolishing the wall at the end of Clough Road, flooding the area and causing extensive damage to local homes and businesses.Slaithwaite is a village within the Metropolitan Borough of Kirklees in West Yorkshire, situated in the Colne Valley five miles south west of Huddersfleld. The devastating flood of 2015 in Slaithwaite The 2012 Kirklees Flood Risk Management Strategy identified that around 2,000 properties were at high risk of flooding with a potential £70 million of damage. When we started our conversation with Kirklees Council, they clearly expressed an interest in a local flood warning and monitoring system to proactively respond to future flood risk.Kirklees Local Flood AuthorityKirklees Council in West Yorkshire is the third largest metropolitan council in the region. As the lead local flood authority for the district, Kirklees manages local flood risk from surface water, groundwater and smaller watercourses and ensures cooperation between local risk management authorities. As part of a smart monitoring project for flood risk areas, funded by Chester University, Andel worked with the Kirklees Council flood risk team to design a local flood alert and monitoring solution for Crimble Clough, enabling the Kirklees Council to better manage the risk of flooding in Slaithwaite. The challengeThe project is designed to monitor high water levels at Crimble Clough caused by debris washed down from the upper wooded catchment and blocking the debris screen. The sensor-based system monitors the difference between water levels, before and after the debris screen, automatically sending alerts for pre-set trigger points. No real-time information: in 2015 the Crimble Clough debris screen became blocked by debris washed down from the upper wooded catchment, with no warning system in place to alert the screen contractors. No strategic information: in 2015, there were many flood hotspots that needed attention but with limited council resources. Because there was no remote monitoring system in place, it was difficult to choose where best to deploy support.Extensive damage: In 2015, due to the stream backing up and demolishing the wall, homes and businesses downstream from Clough Road were flooded and severely damaged.Disruption: following the flood, the clear-up and restoration process for the affected area meant residents had to leave their homes and businesses were closed for months. The economic damage from the 2015 flood was significant with many hours of Kirklees Council labour invested into the recovery. With a monitoring and alert system in place, all of this could have been prevented. The solution – Andel FloodAlertAndel FloodAlert provides 24/7 local monitoring and alerts for areas at risk from flooding. FloodAlert provides real-time information on rising water levels and automatically sends out early flood warnings. The robust and reliable system is easy to install and set up and tracks water levels in watercourses and other parameters for up to 15km from a gateway. From a single water-level sensor to a catchment sensor network monitoring water levels, soil moisture, rainfall data and water quality, FloodAlert provides real-time local flood monitoring and alerts for projects of any size.Installing Andel’s FloodAlert system now means that Kirklees Council has:A cost-effective, real-time local flood monitoring and alert system. A water level monitoring system at the debris screen that sends out SMS and email alerts when water levels reach critical. A system that recognises that the debris screen is blocked by monitoring water levels before and after the screen, sending out SMS and email alerts when the difference is too much. A dataset with detailed catchment data including rainfall, water levels at strategic points and soil moisture in the surrounding farmland – all helping to develop future flood risk models and flood alerts. Live monitoring of sensor data via a cloud-based portal with easy-to-use visualisation accessible from any device with internet connectivity. A system that can communicate with an unlimited number of designated users. Communication via a low-power, low-impact LoRaWAN ® network. The resultsAn effective early warning system: Kirklees Council now receives real-time alerts, allowing for timely response to blockages of the debris screen at Clough Road that has historically caused flooding during periods of heavy rain.Data collection: Kirklees Council can now collect detailed data about how the Crimble Clough catchment responds to rainfall and can develop models to predict future response.Impact measurement: Kirklees Council is developing a baseline to measure the effectiveness of natural flood management interventions at critical locations within the catchment. What the customer saidWorking together on the ‘buildbacktogether’ project was a pleasurable experience, it was essential to have the complimentary skills that made the outcome of the project much more effective. The support from team Andel was very useful and Gerbren Haaksma especially was extremely supportive and efficient with his quick response and stimulating input through the term of the project. I am keen to continue our collaboration and work with the local communities on more engagements like the Slaithwaite project.Namrata Bhattacharya-Mis, Programme Leader, Natural Hazard Management (BA/BSc), Chester University

C-Probe Systems

Challenge: The structure was had severe structural degradation due to the ingress of moisture and water over its near 100-year life. Corrosion to the steelframe resulted in tensile forces cracking and moving the brick skin, also causing a cracked façade. Strategy: ICCP was used as a method to control corrosion whilst the cracking and movement were repaired. This involved LoCem® and +point® AACM anode mortar to be grouted in the bed joints, alongside embedded corrosion rate sensors for service life tracking (AchillesICP and AiMS). LoCem® is a low carbon cement alternative, that can also act as a cathodic protection anode. Outcome: The structure was restored to be used as high-value residential apartments, saving tonnes of embodied carbon and eliminated the option of demolition. The embedded system successfully controlled and monitored corrosion for the long term, adding an additional 100 years to the structure’s service life.

Johnson Controls

Project overviewAmey is one of the UK’s leading public services providers employed to manage the vital infrastructure and range of business services. From transport systems, to deploying and maintaining education establishments and supporting young people, Amey provides services that touch the lives of citizens across the length and breadth of the country. As part of its work within the education sector, Amey is responsible for the maintenance of 42 schools within a five-mile radius of  Northampton town centre. The 30-year contract requires Amey to deliver and manage a range of services to each school, such as fire, security and life safety, including the ongoing monitoring and maintenance of these systems. Quality of service and the safety and security of each school and its pupils and staff is of paramount importance to Amey, and with a desire to improve the level of service delivery, the organisation selected Johnson Controls to provide maintenance of these critical systems. Product and services applications DService, monitoring and maintenance of fire & security system:Intruder alarmsCCTVFire alarmsAccess controlSprinklersPortable extinguishersElectronic docketingTakeover of system from current incumbentDedicated on-site service engineersCustomer needsAs part of its contract with Northamptonshire Schools, Amey must meet set SLA’s with regard to the timely repair of safety and security systems. Failure to meet these pre-defined levels could result in financial penalties. To minimise the risk, Johnson Controls appointed a dedicated and multi-skilled service engineer on this account; the engineer is based in the local area and has developed a specialist knowledge of each site and its systems, the engineer’s presence ensures an efficient response and repair process.Ensuring that all life safety and security systems are maintained by experts is vitally important to Amey. Johnson Controls has provided an up-front maintenance schedule to give clear information on when inspections would be carried out. This provides all parties with a clear understanding of which systems will be serviced and when. Johnson Controls solutionWhen the maintenance contract went to re-tender, Amey had to select a supplier that could meet the aggressive timescale between tendering and mobilisation of the project. Johnson Controls and Amey’s teams worked closely throughout the tender process and after being appointed as the chosen supplier, Johnson Controls was able to immediately take ownership of the maintenance and reactive calls for each system. Johnson Controls also managed the transfer of alarm signals and re-chipping transmitters from the previous provider to its own specialist response centres in a limited timescale. All Johnson Controls engineers have PDA devices giving them the ability to complete electronic dockets for each call out or inspection visit. Data is then submitted electronically to a central Amey helpdesk email where the information can be easily retrieved for compliance and auditing purposes. This system improves the efficiency of the previous paper-based process which led to lost dockets and delays in producing the documentation.Amey and Johnson Controls have developed an extremely close working relationship and regular review meetings are held to discuss lifecycle, product and maintenance issues and to ensure the required high level of service is being delivered. Johnson Controls is able to provide expert advice and works as a consultative partner to help Amey get the best from their fire and security systems.

Challenge: Many elements of the iconic skyscraper were facing embedded steel corrosion, including the structural steel lattice columns within the colossal terracotta enclosures. The expansion of the steel caused by the corrosion was severely damaging the masonry cladding and cracking the six-foot-tall terracotta bison heads.Strategy: Installation of an impressed current cathodic protection (ICCP) system at the steel sections with the colonnades on 29th to 32nd floors. The system consisted of LoCem® +point® anode mortar was applied within the bed joints and drilled in to provide 360° protection of the steel surfaces. The bison heads were deconstructed, steel cleaned-up and masonry reconstructed. LoCem® is a low carbon cement alternative (AACM), which can also act as a cathodic protection anode for controlling steel frame corrosion.Outcome: The ICCP system resulted in long-term performance and control for the whole life preservation of our clients’ assets. Using AchillesICP for control over corrosion rate, and AiMS to collect the data, the client had full transparency over structural health and the power to make predictive maintenance decisions.

Reinforced Concrete Restoration - Omni Centre Car Park, Scotland

C-Probe Systems

Challenge: C-Probe's LoCem® +chase® anode mortar has been installed at the Omni Shopping Centre Car Park in Edinburgh, Scotland to 4 levels of underground car parking as part of a comprehensive corrosion management strategy. Overtime the popular car park had succumbed to structural damage and corrosion caused by the ingress of chlorides from de-icing salts from above.Solution: This system comprised of 42 ICCP zones and 7 additional monitoring zones forlevels protected using surface-applied corrosion inhibitors. In addition to this, some 6000 C-Puck galvanic anodes were used to protect newly repaired areas to 2 levels. All the anodes and monitoring could be controlled and data accessed remotely throughoutthe car park with AchillesICP and AchillesIES, helping to extend its service life for 100+ years.Outcome: This ESG compliant approach meant there was no need for demolition or extensive reconstruction using new materials, helping to reduce waste and harmful emissions. Reconstruction was also a near-impossible strategy due to underground facility and electric tram on land, meaning something non-invasive like cathodic protection was essentialto minimise social disruption.

Reducing Energy Costs for a Commercial Warehouse and Showroom in England

Reducing Energy Costs for a Commercial Warehouse and Showroom in England

EQONIC GROUP LIMITED

IntroductionThis case study focuses on a commercial warehouse and showroom in England aiming to reduce future electricity costs and optimise energy consumption. With growing concerns about rising energy prices and a commitment to sustainable operations, the client sought to integrate renewable energy solutions into their building infrastructure. The goal was to harness solar energy to power daily operations, reduce grid dependency, and provide real-time monitoring and management of energy usage.Client's RequirementsThe client’s objectives were clear:Cost Reduction: The primary goal was to significantly reduce future electricity costs by leveraging renewable energy sources.Energy Efficiency: The building had high energy consumption due to its dual use as a warehouse and showroom, and the client needed a system that could meet these demands.Sustainability: The client wanted to harness solar energy to ensure that their daily operations were sustainable, aligning with broader goals of reducing environmental impact.Energy Monitoring: Real-time monitoring and management of energy usage were essential to optimise energy consumption and reduce reliance on grid electricity.Challenges: High Energy ConsumptionThe multipurpose nature of the building posed significant challenges. As both a warehouse and showroom, energy demand fluctuated based on operational hours and customer footfall. Peak hours required a consistent and reliable power supply, making energy efficiency critical. Additionally, the building's design limited available space for large-scale energy systems, necessitating a compact yet powerful solution. The Solution: EQONIC Solar PV, Battery, and Inverter SystemEQONIC proposed a comprehensive solution tailored to meet the client’s specific needs. After a detailed assessment of the building’s energy consumption patterns, available rooftop space, and grid connection, the following system was recommended:1. Solar Photovoltaic (PV) SystemThe PV system consisted of 78 x 380W monocrystalline panels, designed to maximise solar energy capture within the available roof space. The total system size of 29.64 kWp ensured that a significant portion of the building’s energy demand could be met through solar generation, reducing reliance on grid electricity.2. Hybrid InvertersTo manage the energy produced by the solar panels and integrate it into the building’s power system, 3 x EQONIC 8kW single-phase hybrid inverters were installed. These inverters allowed the seamless integration of solar energy with the building’s existing power infrastructure, ensuring efficient energy flow and management.3. Battery StorageTo further optimise energy usage, an EQONIC 43kWh high-voltage battery was installed. The battery was programmed to charge at night when electricity tariffs were lower, storing energy for use during the day when electricity demand and prices were higher. This strategic use of battery storage not only reduced operational costs but also smoothed out energy consumption peaks during busy periods.Energy Management and Real-Time MonitoringOne of the key components of the solution was the real-time monitoring and management system provided by EQONIC. This system allowed the client to track energy generation, consumption, and storage in real-time. By providing detailed insights into how energy was being used throughout the day, the client could make informed decisions to optimise energy usage and further reduce costs.Financial Investment and ROIThe total cost of the installation was carefully considered to ensure a strong return on investment. While the upfront cost of the system represented a significant investment, the long-term financial benefits far outweighed the initial expenditure.Projected Cost SavingsThe solar PV system was expected to generate over 22,000 kWh of renewable energy annually. This would result in a 70-80% reduction in grid energy consumption, leading to substantial savings on electricity bills. Additionally, the integration of the battery storage system allowed the client to take advantage of off-peak tariffs, further reducing energy costs.Environmental ImpactIn addition to the financial benefits, the project had a substantial positive impact on the environment. By shifting to renewable energy, the client would reduce their carbon emissions by over 5,000 kgCO2 per year. INNOVATIVE FENCE WALKWAY SYSTEM FOR INSTALLERS SAFETY

INNOVATIVE FENCE WALKWAY SYSTEM FOR INSTALLERS SAFETY

Zaun Limited

In preparation for the 2012 Olympics, where over 10,000 athletes from more than 200 countries competed in London, Zaun developed a walkway system that would enable technicians to work safely at height to install fencing as well as attach CCTV and security enhancements to the highest parts of the fencing.Project ChallengesThe project required a range of unique and innovative solutions because of the varied challenges that were in play. The system needed to adhere to strict health and safety regulations, especially as working at heights has many potential dangers, and worker safety is a huge priority. We needed to create a cost-effective solution that installers could use in various venues and areas. We also needed to ensure that this walkway system did not damage the 358 mesh. The walkway also needed to facilitate the repair and installation of Perimeter Intrusion Detection (PID) and pulse-monitored electric fencing systems and razor wire. As such, it was essential that installers could easily and safely access materials, equipment and tools.Biggest Sporting Event In The WorldAs the Olympics is one of the biggest events in the world, global attention was on London and the various venues needed to be as secure as possible. From camera operators and athletes to volunteers and security personnel, the huge number of people involved in the Olympics meant that the security team needed to be able to see as much as possible at all times. To do this, it was best to put the security monitoring equipment along the fence line to survey the whole area and reduce the requirement for additional civils for CCTV cameras. Security measures during big events like the Olympics need to be incredibly stringent. The installation of these surveillance and security measures is of utmost importance to the security of the entire event.Innovative Walkway SystemZaun designed and manufactured a unique walkway system that allowed installers to work at heights safely without damaging the mesh fencing. Our innovative system was designed specifically to support the installation and maintenance of 358 security mesh fencing, CCTV cameras and electric fencing at the top of the fence line. We created an innovative walkway solution that easily attached to 358 mesh so technicians could check and access the security measures whilst safely working at height.

Luxury apartments benefit from NIBE Exhaust Air heat pumps

Luxury apartments benefit from NIBE Exhaust Air heat pumps

NIBE Energy Systems Ltd

Salthaven Apartments, Tower Road, Poole, DorsetThe Salthaven apartments in Dorset aimed to deliver luxury living for occupants. Bayview Developments not only constructed beautiful homes for them, but also opted for highly energy efficient heating within the new development. Each of the 12 two or three bed apartments have been fitted with their own individual exhaust air heat pump (EAHP). This technology has been installed in buildings across continental Europe for many years but is now being used more commonly within the UK. Bayview Developments were looking to exceed their planning requirements by reducing carbon emissions and providing cost savings for occupants. NIBE’s innovative EAHPs were therefore the ideal solution. The solution to the projectA NIBE F730 EAHP system removed the need for gas boilers, something Bayview were keen to do given the UK’s net zero targets and commitment to phase out the technology. As heat pump technology is powered by electricity, no gas has been installed at the site. The NIBE F730 unit can be found in the utility room cupboard of each apartment and is comprised of a ventilation system, a hot water cylinder and a heat pump – a complete ‘all-in-one’ product. It works by drawing warm air from the kitchen and bathroom to feed the heat pump, which extracts the heat energy. The recovered energy from the ventilation system is used to drive the heat pump process, which heats the underfloor heating and provides water for the integrated 180litre hot water cylinder. The stale air from the ventilation system is then released outside, whilst fresh air from outdoors is introduced via wall inlets with cleanable filters. The efficient system minimises energy consumption by combing ventilation heat recovery with heat pump technology, that is perfect for well insulated new build properties such as these. The ResultsThe EAHP systems meet the average annual heat demand of 6019 kWh for each individual flat whilst also providing instant hot water. Occupants are able to schedule their heating to suit their timetable and energy tariffs, and therefore benefit from lower energy bills. The system performance factor (SPF) measures 3.33 – this means the system is very efficient as every kW of electricity used to run the unit produces approximately 3 kW of heat energy.NIBE utilised connected electricity meters in 3 apartments to remotely monitor the systems performance across a 12-month period. NIBE was thus able to see how the systems met energy demand consistently for residents, keeping them comfortable and warm throughout the year.Energy consumption data shown in Figure 1 visualises electricity consumption data from the monitored apartments throughout the year. This data also covers the provision of all heat pump controls and continuous mechanical ventilation.Figure 1: 2022 Energy Consumption data for monitored apartments. The all-in-one system has shown a noticeable reduction in energy bills for each apartment too, with all 3 monitored apartments experiencing both monthly and cumulative cost reductions in their energy bills as shown in Figures 2 and 3. This comes with the additional peace of mind that consumers will be kept cool in the summer months with ventilation with no increase in costs.Figure 2 and 3: Monthly and Cumulative Heating Bills for Apartment 11 with the NIBE F730 heat pump compared to a natural gas boiler. The occupants of Apartment 11 are saving on average £130 on their annual heating bills with the heat pump system in comparison to a natural gas boiler, even with the additional provision of mechanical ventilation. We expect that these savings will continue to increase as the Government seeks to rebalance green levies to decrease electricity prices.Sunstone Energy Ltd, the installer for this project, told us how easy the control system is to use for this heat pump, allowing for heating and hot water to be available at any time during the day. The building also benefits from insulation, underfloor heating, smart controls, double glazing, hot water cylinders and mechanical ventilation with heat recovery (MVHR).TestimonialVictoria and John are both residents of the Tower Road apartment complex and have been comfortably living with the exhaust air source heat pump system for a year. They added “We are delighted so far with the new heating system, and love that it has been providing us with heating and hot water throughout the year, keeping us warm in the cold winter months. The heat pump works just as well as our older systems and it is great to know that we’re also doing our bit for the environment in the process.”About the installerSunstone Energy Ltd takes responsibility for delivering complete renewable solutions appropriate to their client’s properties. Their expertise includes the installation of ground source and air source heat pumps, underfloor heating, solar panels, biomass boilers and MVHR.

Thames Valley Police: Enhancing public safety with a CCTV partnership

Thames Valley Police: Enhancing public safety with a CCTV partnership

Hanwha Vision Europe Limited

Thames Valley Police worked with local authorities to improve CCTV coverage, cut costs, and boost efficiency. It’s made public spaces safer and ensured long-term, reliable monitoring across the region.Thames Valley Police is the largest non-metropolitan police force in England and Wales, covering 2,218 square miles and a population of 2.42 million people. Its jurisdiction includes multiple towns, city centres and council areas across the three counties of Berkshire, Buckinghamshire and Oxfordshire.Setting a long-term vision for public space CCTVPublic space CCTV is vital in deterring and detecting crime across the Thames Valley. However, significant pressure on local authority budgets has made it increasingly difficult for councils to provide public space CCTV. There was real jeopardy that financial constraints would result in unmaintained systems, with limited or no real-time monitoring.A fresh approach was needed so the Thames Valley CCTV partnership between Genetec™ and Hanwha Vision was formed. The first major challenge was securing funding to overhaul several local authorities’ ageing systems which were proving increasingly expensive to upgrade and maintain. The second was to manage the ongoing costs of staffing control rooms to ensure the long-term sustainability of monitored CCTV across the Thames Valley.Ambitious plans were devised to pool resources and replace many disparate systems with one police-owned system that could extend across multiple authorities. In effect, the aim was to transfer the ownership and monitoring of public space CCTV from local authorities to dedicated Thames Valley Police control rooms. It would be led by the Thames Valley Police & Crime Commissioner (PCC) Matthew Barber, collaborating with any local authority who chose to participate. It was a feat that had never been attempted in the UK on this scale that held the potential to drive efficiencies and enhance CCTV provision in areas it might otherwise have deteriorated.“CCTV is an important part of community safety; benefitting police and local communities in helping to deter crime and antisocial behaviour, identify offenders and support prosecutions. Ongoing commitment and investment enables high quality, consistent and sustainable CCTV provision now and into the future”, explains Matthew Barber, PCC, Thames Valley.Centralisation creates area-wide visibility and controlSeveral control rooms in the Thames Valley, such as Windsor & Maidenhead had already implemented Genetec Security Center and were very happy with its operation. Furthermore, as an open platform video management system it could minimise costs by supporting a phased unification or “takeover” of existing systems across the Thames Valley. Finally, its hybrid cloud architecture provided Thames Valley with maximal flexibility to leverage any combination of cloud or on-premises infrastructure according to Name Thames Valley Police Industries Public Safety Location Thames Valley, United Kingdom Products Genetec Security Center; Genetec Cloud Services; Federation Technology Partners Hanwha Vision Channel Partners CDS Systems what made sense for each application and location. This made it the obvious choice on which to standardise.Following a competitive tender, Thames Valley chose CDS Systems to implement its proposed solution. This would be built on Genetec Security Center and incorporate a range of multidirectional AI-enabled cameras from Hanwha Vision. A key driver in the decision was the high levels of commitment shown by all three parties to cybersecurity. Another was the recognition that the system design and technology selection could ensure a cost-effective implementation that could continue to evolve in line with the needs of its users.“We urgently needed to improve the quality of CCTV, enhance collaboration, and drive efficiencies for all partners. The respective capabilities and seamless integration between Genetec and Hanwha Vision technology was the optimal way of meeting Thames Valley’s requirements,” says Sam Thomas, CDS Systems.Phase one of the deployment involved CDS taking over an existing control room in Milton Keynes, replacing the legacy analogue infrastructure with a modern IP backbone. It then installed Genetec Security Center to establish one platform through which officers could smartly interact with all incoming video feeds. Legacy cameras were retained and reused to maximise the return on existing investment wherever possible. A second Genetec workstation was also set up inside Slough Police station, allowing officers to rapidly review footage for improved community response.CDS then introduced Hanwha Vision’s AI-enabled multidirectional 4k cameras to improve CCTV coverage and quality in public spaces. Each of these cameras incorporates up to five cameras in one device for wide-area surveillance, which would previously have required several separate devices, simplifying installation and resulting in significantly less associated cabling and infrastructure. They also provide powerful AI analytics, including accurate object detection and classification, to enable forensic search and save operators time when responding to incidents. For example, identifying and establishing the movement of specific people or vehicles based on attributes such as vehicle type.Phase two will see four additional control rooms in Oxfordshire merged into a single hub inside Abingdon Police station, also built on Genetec Security Center. This and the control room in Milton Keynes will be interlinked, adding further resilience as each site will be able to act as a fallback for the other. At this point, there will be a dedicated team of eighteen staff responsible for monitoring CCTV and enhancing CCTV for all participating communities in the Thames Valley CCTV Partnership.“The CCTV Command Suite enabled by CDS, Genetec and Hanwha Vision has improved our workflows beyond recognition, enabling staff to quickly review and package evidence for frontline officers or more complex investigations. It has received several plaudits from officers for its ease of use,” says Jason Owen, CCTV Operations Manager, Thames Valley Police.“This collaboration between Thames Valley Police, Genetec, CDS Systems, and Hanwha Vision showcases the power of partnership in driving innovative, cost-effective solutions that improve public safety,” says John Boorman, Head of Product and Marketing at Hanwha Vision Europe. “Our AI-enabled cameras are designed to reduce false alarms and streamline operations, ensuring teams can focus on real incidents and drive efficiency across their monitoring.”Efficiency, at lower costPooling resources and transferring ownership to the police has brought about significant cost efficiencies for participating authorities, while also enhancing the quality and reliability of public spaces CCTV.Just as importantly, it has dramatically improved the police’s direct access to quality video evidence. Unlike in a traditional council-run control room, all CCTV operators are civilian police staff vetted to the same clearance levels as sworn-in officers. This means they have full access to Thames Valley’s suite of police databases and reporting software packages. They are better equipped to rapidly report incidents, support front-line officers, and communicate effectively with investigators as a result. On average it is handles between 300 – 500 incidents a month and has substantially increased the number of successful requests for supporting footage.“We’ve immediately seen the benefit of our investment in equipment and CCTV operators, with the police now much better equipped to deter and detect crime across the Thames Valley,” adds Barber.A solid platform for further improvementsLooking forward, Thames Valley has plans to use the Genetec platform to connect its people and mobile surveillance assets back to its control rooms for better cross force interaction. Genetec Federation as a Service is already allowing live and recorded video to be shared with officers in the field. Soon it will also be extended to ensure video from police CCTV vans and drones is immediately available in the control room. In both cases this is achieved without complex network configuration, requiring only an internet connection. It is also at the beginning of its journey of fully realising the value of the AI-equipped Hanwha Vision cameras specified by CDS. Control room operators’ intuition will always be the driving force that brings results, but AI is freeing them up to do what they do best by saving time on routine monitoring and searches. Finally, talks continue that would see the addition of further control rooms across the Thames Valley to the Thames Valley CCTV Partnership. Having proven the model, would allow it to scale operations further to deliver even greater cost savings, resilience, and efficiencies.“We’re proud of what we’ve achieved to date but have no intention of resting on our laurels. The foundations we’ve established will ensure continued high-quality, consistent, and sustainable CCTV provision for our communities,” concludes Owen.

New Inn Broadway

New Inn Broadway

Allgood Ltd

Located on the surviving remains of London’s first purpose-built theatre, New Inn Broadway is a new V&A museum exhibition and office building in Shoreditch. ‘The Theatre’ - which was the forerunner to ‘The Globe’- was originally built in 1576 and was home to some of William Shakespeare’s early plays. The five-storey building has been developed to celebrate the unique history of the site.New Inn Broadway is a location steeped in history. With its origins stretching back to Elizabethan times, and now playing host to the V&A and a commercial office space there was a lot to consider during the specification process. This dual purpose presented specific access concerns for the client, wanting to easily control who can move between the museum and office space, while also keeping everything secure. Allgood’s team of security and access control consultants worked with the client and electrical consultants to create a system design that met these requirements. This detailed technical planning was followed by careful execution and installation, using the latest in security and access control equipment. The final solution involved a state-of-the-art system that allows differing levels of access across the separate areas of the multi-use venue. This work was complemented with a coordinated ironmongery package including a complete Modric Doc M installation.Allgood Secure was specified by mechanical and electrical consultants Waterman Group to collaborate on system design, and supply and fit access control an audio visual intercom system, CCTV intruder detection, and an alarm system. As this was a multi-use development comprising the V&A museum as well as commercial office space, it was imperative that the building had a network access control system to manage access and maintain security as well as allow the end user to change access rights easily.Stainless steel entrance panels were specified at the main entrance doors and at the stairwells of each lettable office space floor, with a one-way video system that calls the internal handsfree monitors.A HD CCTV system was selected to allow remote monitoring from a different site, and a mixture of bullet and dome cameras were installed and finished in a bespoke RAL finish to complement the contemporary ceiling.Allgood Secure managed the installation of an intruder alarm system which features high-end technology offering peace of mind for staff. As well as a high-tech security system, Allgood’s Modric washroom package was specified by Gallus Studio architects, particularly its Doc M package.
