Rhyl Railway Station Restoration

Rhyl Railway Station Restoration

Polyroof Products Ltd

Long standing and rich in history, Rhyl Railway station was opened on 1st May 1848 and was part of the Chester and Holyhead Railway Company’s line. The Station itself is located close to the centre of Rhyl, a lively seaside town on the North Wales coastline and a popular destination for many tourists across the country. As part of a Railway Upgrade Plan, Network Rail have invested £50 million into the restoration of stations across the North Wales Coast. Rhyl was one of the first stations to receive this upgrade and when it was shown that various roofs of the station were in need of restoration. The ChallengeRhyl was one of the first stations to receive this upgrade, and when it was shown that various roofs of the station were in need of restoration, Polyroof was chosen to help restore them to their former glory, and a survey was organised. The specified areas that were in need of refurbishment included the roof over Platform 2 and the bridge walkway roof which connected the two platforms. The existing waterproofing on these areas consisted of built-up felt with a mineral cap sheet, which was in an aged condition and beginning to show signs of failure such as splits and blisters. Leaks were now beginning to occur which were in danger of affecting the condition of the roof structure itself. The SolutionBased on the findings of the survey conducted by Polyroof Technical Services, a bespoke specification was designed that would eliminate the current issues through the installation of the BBA-approved Protec system. Due to the roof being situated above unheated areas, there was no requirement for new insulation within the build up. Firstly the existing built-up felt was stripped and removed from site to expose the original close-boarded timber which was inspected for defects, made good where required and retained where possible. Defective areas where replaced with new timberwork as required. In order to provide a sound, solid substrate a new OSB3 TG4 deck was mechanically fixed across the whole area within a phased approach, ensuring the roof was kept watertight as works progressed. The Protec system was then applied directly to the timber; with its RapidcureTM technology large areas where able to be made fully waterproof within short periods of time. Polyroof Technical Services visited site regularly to ensure works were being completed to the high standards required and regular reports were fed back to the client. Upon completion a final inspection by Polyroof led to the roof being signed off and guaranteed, giving the client complete peace of mind that their roof will be fully watertight for at least the 20 years. Polyroof were proud to be part of this project to restore Rhyl and its Railway station to its former glory.

These requirements were set by the building’s landlord and without satisfying them the project would not be approved. The SolutionOnce the client had made their preferred shutter style choice (welded tube & link), Aluroll commissioned a second round of prototype tests which involved building a full-scale 9153mm x 5000mm prototype with removable 150mm guide channels.Weight and barrel calculations from the smaller prototypes suggested a maximum tube and link roll diameter of 388mm, which was within the 400mm space. All three tube and link curtain design options were built to full scale and tested on the same barrel and guide channel framework.Aluroll’s extensive research, design and testing stages ensured the final product met the unique requirements of the initial brief successfully. Aluroll visited site in Macau in December 2018 to survey site and confirm all dimensions for manufacture. Apple and F&P requested that Aluroll co-ordinate the installation via a local contractor (YK).Read Dezeens take on the store opening here

Chepstow is a beautiful town and community in Monmouthshire, Wales. Located on the tidal River Wye, roughly 2 miles before the confluence of the River Severn. Steeped in history, Chepstow’s Great Tower keep was commissioned by William the Conqueror following the Battle of Hastings. With high ceilings and spaces which feel luxurious there is simply something that draws us towards the vast expanse of space and the warmth offered by listing buildings such as converted barns and farmhouses, often because of their idyllic rural locations.Delta Registered Installers, Tywi Damp Proofing were commissioned with the sympathetic conversion of an old farmhouse located in Chepstow. The project scope was to convert 1 listed farmhouse into 5 separate dwellings.Original features, such as 5ft thick walls were embraced in this conversion project.During initial inspections, penetrating damp was found. Penetrating damp is often referred to as lateral damp, which is the development of moisture through walls, roofs or any ground area of a structure. If left untreated this penetrating damp will cause problems for the structure envelope and can lead to significant damage to the fabric. Penetrating damp can be caused by a combination of problems such as the structure’s age, construction and exposed location.

Coopers Fire Ltd

Coopers Fire proudly installed multiple fire and smoke curtains in this iconic building in London.Coopers Fire was approached in 2013 to support multiple Architects and Fire Engineers to work through the difficult interface designs on the historic Battersea building that posed multiple challenges in incorporating smoke and fire strategies whilst maintaining the legacy build design. This was a great opportunity to once again put forward the innovative solutions that have attracted Architects to Coopers Fire on many occasions previously. These challenges followed with the introduction of bespoke curtain systems stretching the designs beyond the norm. There was also a need to carry out support testing to validate their capability and to offer comfort to the stakeholders.Coopers Fire offered continual support to the key stakeholders including the Architect and Fire Engineer community, giving them confidence in ongoing collaboration with Coopers Fire for future projects. The Coopers Fire product design and interfacing, complete with valid specifications, went a long way to assist a Contractors partnership decision in supplying and installing the finished product whilst enabling live design changes with the aligned Architect engaged on the project. The project required FireMaster® Concertina curtains 25m width and 12m in height of straight sections, with an integrity rating of 30 minutes. The Coopers Fire Concertina product portfolio allowed for 12m width and 8m height of straight length sections so the product needed re-designing and bespoke engineering to suit the requirements of the project.A specimen of the engineered solution was tested at an accredited fire testing lab. The specimen achieved 66 minutes integrity rating, without failure. The combined engineering design, testing and fire test data allowed Coopers Fire to meet the requirements of supplying a 25m wide and 12m high FireMaster® Open Concertina fire curtain. One major challenge of the large Concertina products was installation. The 12m drop Concertina fire curtains were installed successfully on site using a combination of scaffolding and mobile platforms and at some points with minimal headspace to work within. The Concertinas were so long that onsite redesign and engineering were required to ensure the bottom tray engaged perfectly with the headbox. The Concertina retaining guides were also so long they required onsite welding. A further four levels below the curtain drop, meant that total installation height was higher than 12 metres from the ground spanning over the voids either side of the bridge below. The Coopers Fire production and installation teams collaborated to manufacture the individual parts of the Concertina fabric off site to ensure the programme of installation was kept on time.Coopers Fire installed:47 x Vertical fire curtains7 x Concertina curtains32 x Vertical smoke curtainsThe team used for the Concertina installation specialise in this product and were able to overcome onsite challenges to ensure the huge Concertina fire curtains operated as expected and deployed effectively.

The best aluminium cladding for private residence

The best aluminium cladding for private residence

Technowood UK

Aluminium and real timber claddingThe best aluminium cladding for your private home, extension, renovation is Technowood ® cladding. It is faster than most cladding systems to install and has been available for almost 30 years. Tried, tested, analyzed and put through its paces in some of the toughest weather locations Technowood has proved itself a worthy product. How does Timber cladding weatherThere are many solid timbers used as conventional cladding, the main complaint being that the weathering is inconsistent. The colours fade at different rates which may look unsightly.UV light damages wood because it breaks down the wood’s lignin. Lignin is a component of wood that strengthens the cell walls and holds the fibres together. This process is called photo-oxidation.Technowood doesn’t suffer in the same way. This is because the manufacturing process of the veneer and the resins used to replace the lignin; thus negating the short comings of normal timber. You can’t really stop natural timber from weathering. However, with Technowood you can be assured of consistency. How to avoid water staining on claddingAvoiding water stains on timber cladding is something of a myth. Unless you maintain your cladding almost weekly there will always be indications of water staining. It is a product exposed to the elements and as such will be at least damp for most of the year; therefore will show water staining.Completed in 2012 this project is in Samsun, turkey. Receives full exposure from the sun and heavy rain (don’t think it doesn’t rain in Turkey as it does, it snows too). This project called for Technowood because it would keep the natural colour of the timber for much longer compared to normal timber cladding. Can normal timber cladding be warrantied?Under normal circumstances, you can’t warranty normal timber; unless it has gone through pressure treating or surface treatment that has such a warranty. These warranties are not ambiguous so long as the treatment process is followed to the letter of instruction.“The warranty for Technowood products is 20 years”.Salt Spray TestingSalt spray testing, a practice of checking the corrosion resistance of the surface of materials that have a coating. During salt spray testing, an accelerated corrosive attack is produced in order to measure the performance. This demonstrates how well the coating protects the metal. “Salt spray test has been done to our veneered material by IFT Rosenheim Germany and its succeeded.” Technowood aluminium and timber veneer claddingThe products available from Technowood are in standard width dimensions from 100mm, 150mm and 200mm. They look like real wood because it’s a real wood veneer. The product has very little to no maintenance; It also carries Fire Rating A2. The Merry Hill Shopping Centre in Brierley Hill recently underwent an expansion and overhaul of its entrance area. Aspen were approached to design, manufacture and install bespoke drainage for the newly renovated entrance area to the shopping centre.Aspen worked closely with the client to manufacture and install stainless steel solutions to support the performance of the outdoor environment. There was great importance placed on the rainwater calculations and anti-slip resistance to ensure the channels and covers were fit for purpose in an outdoor setting. Aspen provided engineering drawings, samples and prototypes to ensure a seamless manufacturing process and delivery of the project from day one.Aspen Stainless  HD Heel Guard Drain Cover and Drain Channels were specifically designed to support the flow of rainwater within the entrance area. The standard central bottom Meribel Outlet was installed to efficiently dispose of non-liquid waste built up within the outlet. The trap featured fully removable trash baskets to allow for the efficient disposal of non-liquid waste, built up within the outlet. The HD Heel Guard Cover was specifically tested using the pendulum anti-slip test. The pendulum assesses the friction offered by the floor when a foot comes into contact with the surface. The cover was tested to ensure that the surface presents a safe level of grip in end use. The pendulum anti-slip has proven to deliver the most accurate results and is therefore the key adopted method for assessing floor slipperiness in all conditions. The pendulum CoF test is the subject is a British Standard, BS 7976: Parts 1-3 using an imitation heel (rubber soling sample) sweeping over the drain cover. The slipperiness of the flooring has a direct impact on the value provided and is therefore the adopted method for assessing floor slipperiness in all conditions. The dedicated project manager worked closely with the contractor during the installation process to ensure highest standards for drainage and protection were achieved. The design, manufacture and installation process was specifically scoped out to meet with all the necessary building regulations in line with the latest HSE and UKSRG guidelines. If you wish to find out more about Aspen Stainless solutions please email: aspen@canalengineering.co.uk or speak to one of our technical sales team via our online chat portal.
