Lionweld Kennedy provided a package of work for 'Beatrice Offshore Wind Farm' which is just off the coast of John o'Groats in Scotland. We designed the project, ensuring steel and GRP was used efficiently to reduce costs for the client. In-house at our Middlesbrough factory, we fabricated steel and GRP grating to provide flooring and handrail solutions across the windfarm. The windfarm has the potential to generate 750MW of renewable energy,  is capable of providing enough wind powered electricity for up to 450,000 homes.The whole project was delivered in time and under budget.

Vattenfall is one of Europe's largest producers of electricity and heat an have markets in Sweden, Germany, Denmark and further.We have designed, fabricated and supplied the steel and GRP grating, barrier handrails and ladders to the Ormonde Wind Jackets wind farm.The 150MW wind farm is the first offshore wind farm to use steel jackets for the turbine and substation foundations. The jackets were transported offshore on cargo barges and secured onto the seabed by inserting the four legs into pre-driven piles the longest 'single-pull' electricity export cable installation in UK waters (42km).

The SSE Hydro is the biggest performance arena ever designed by Foster + Partners. Lang+Fulton have now supplied a decorative solution for the stage entrance constructed from their STEREO-KINETIC cladding system. Each stainless steel sheet is engraved with name of an artist, commemorating their performance. When the Hydro first opened in 2013 Lang+Fulton supplied the Roma-3 grating fence which secures the perimeter of the complex and storage compounds, as well as a Micro-15 balustrade for the elevated walkway which connects the car parking facilities with the venue. The frontage of the Ocean Terminal shopping centre in Edinburgh has received a radical makeover as part of a major investment to increase footfall by enhancing the visitor experience. The extension has been covered with STEREO-KINETIC cladding; hundreds of freely-moving stainless steel sheets suspended from grating panels. Gusts of wind, traffic, even people walking by cause the metal rectangles to ripple in an ever-changing display. The kinetic artwork has been designed in such a way as to allow the passage of natural daylight through the underlying window openings on the second floor level.

Pioneer Square is a mixed use retail and leisure development in the the heart of Bicester in Oxfordshire, anchored by a Sainsbury’s superstore and including a 7-screen cinema, offices, library and hotel.As a regeneration project within the city centre, it included a 526 space car park over two levels. Lang+Fulton supplied 134 panels of Terra-34 open mesh grating to act as a security barrier over an area of 1010m2. In addition, 85 panels of Italia-100 louvres in various dimensions were supplied to cover an area of 231m2 which required visual screening.

Through the integration of pioneering materials, the build was designed to strike a balance between contemporary design and historic style. The product behind the concept was Wienerberger’s Smeed Dean London Stock brick – chosen for the project to complement the architectural character of traditional brickwork that has been used throughout the capital, including prestigious landmarks such as Buckingham Palace and the Tower of London. The brick is composed of a truly unique combination of materials; local chalk, brick earth, town ash and clinker preserved from the fire grates of Victorian London – giving it its celebrated look and finish.

A glass Juliet balcony (also known as a French balcony) is a type of glass balustrade that is fitted to a first floor window, directly outside a set of inward-opening French doors, as a safety feature. The home owner didn’t want any handrails blocking their view, so 17.5mm toughened laminated glass has been used as this eliminates the need for the extra safety measure. Toughened laminated glass has a layer between the glass sheets which adds strength, removing the need for a handrail.To pass building regulations, the glass must be 1100mm high across these Juliet balconies. If you’ve ever been involved in a building project, you’ll know that elements must be signed off before the next building phase can begin. The black Juliet Balconies look stunning with the matching windows and French doors and have fulfilled the customer brief perfectly. POSIglaze side-fix balustrade channel is able to hold glass thickness between 12mm and 21.5mm. and is suitable for many projects and balcony styles. Privacy glass on a balcony is becoming a more frequent request. This installation by AC Fabrications in Cornwall on a domestic property perfectly displays how a glass privacy screen can be used. The partially frosted glass increases privacy for those on the balcony, people at ground level will not be able to see them. The non-frosted section allows the residents to enjoy their view from the privacy of their balcony. Taller glass on one side extends the privacy even more, and also will act as a windbreak. Frameless glass balustrade is often used as a windbreak on balconies, the solid pane of glass protecting those on the balcony. The installer has used POSIglaze base fit Silver brushed channel. Designed to provide the greatest possible adjustment opportunities, this system enables each panel to be perfectly aligned during, or even after, installation. POSIglaze is the perfect choice for residential to light commercial installations where up to 1.5kN frameless glass balustrade is required. This innovative patented and market leading screw-clamp technology locks glass panels into position effortlessly, with four immobilising fasteners per meter of channel. 

Battersea Power Station is one of London’s most iconic buildings and remains one of the city’s best known landmarks. A vibrant new community is being created offering the best retail, office, leisure and green space plus unique homes designed by internationally renowned architects, Foster + Partners and Gehry Partners. Working with Maylim, the Buzon pedestal systems have been specified for a multitude of areas across this 39-acre site, for use with timber decking, planter units, seating units, paving and grating. This project is still ongoing and Buzon UK are excited to be involved in such a large redevelopment.

Green Park Station provides access to the Jubilee, Piccadilly and Victoria Lines. The £60 million refurbishment to achieve step-free access included a copper canopy, a Portland stone entrance and a ramp from the ticket hall into the Park featuring green wall screening. Lang+Fulton designed and supplied 300sqm of panels to clad the raked inner facade of both retaining walls and the tapered wall-heads, which would support the green wall planting. The panels were made to custom sizes from Terra-34 grating and fixed with varying lengths of bracket to accommodate the stepped areas in the walls.

The new store at Coventry was built using environmentally sustainable building materials. As the first city centre store, it also provides contained parking for 800 cars. Lang+Fulton supplied ventilation screens to the ground floor parking which extended to form a barrier to the first level. Terra-34 grating was chosen with a 34x100mm aperture to comply with anti-climb guidelines. Panels were custom-sized to continue the aesthetic of the surrounding cladding material and mounted to conform with the horizontal and vertical joints. Over 200m² of screening was supplied in a hot-dip galvanized finish incorporating two emergency exits.

Howe Green’s 7500 Series Medium Duty Access Covers have been installed in Manchester Cathedral as part of extensive reordering works. The 7500 Series Access Covers were chosen to provide reliable yet virtually invisible access to new mechanical and electrical chambers across the entire body of the building. Over 70 covers were made, each to a bespoke size to fit precisely with the new Burlington Stone slabs being installed. Howe Green also designed a special cover grating to allow air supply to the blower working the bellows of the Cathedral’s remarkable organ.

The Les Ormes holiday resort in the St Brelade area of Jersey in the Channel Islands has converted its soccer dome into an activity centre called ‘Jump Jersey’. It’s an extremely impressive project which saw international flooring specialist Gerflor supply 1250m2 of their innovative GTI Max interlocking technical tile solution which was used throughout the activity centre as well as the café and reception areas.

Lionweld Kennedy designed, fabricated and supplied steel grating, handrails, ladders and gates for the 'Shah Deniz' stage 2 offshore facility, owned by Tekfen Construction. Supplying 'safegrid', 'safetreads' and 'saferails' which were fabricated to fit the specifications of the client provided them with an efficient and compliant flooring solution. Our flooring will add a further 16 billion cubic meters per year (bcma) of gas production to the approximately 9 bcma produced by Shah Deniz Stage 1.Shah Deniz Stage 2, will help increase European energy security by bringing Caspian gas resources to markets in Europe for the very first time.

The bridge connects Hong Kong with Macau and Zhuhai, three major cities on the Pearl River Delta in China. The 55-kilometre link is one of the world’s longest. Hong Kong–Zhuhai–Macau Bridge is set to open to vehicular traffic in 2018 and has already become a landmark.

Both materials thrive in harsh environments, which is why Lionweld Kennedy supplied an range of our products to cut down on costs, while maintaining high strength. Clair Ridge is the second phase of development of the Clair field which, with an estimated eight billion barrels of oil in place, is the largest undeveloped hydrocarbon resource onthe UKCS.The £4.5bn investment involves two new bridge-linked platforms.

The new Springs retail and leisure facility at Thorpe Park, Leeds, includes cinemas, shops, restaurants and a gym.Part of the development was to build a state-of-the-art gymnasium for PureGym.The acoustic consultants specified CDM Stravitec to design and build a dry damped floating floor as part of the shell and core to ensure that the gymnasium did not disturb the restaurants and shops located directly below.The Stravifloor Channel floating floor was to be installed within a tight four week deadline and this was successfully completed.

A beautiful mix of a traditional kitchen with modern roof-to-wall glazing by Cantifix has successfully incorporated roof shading to reduce heat and glare.R30 Zipped Roller Blinds were specified by DUST Architecture with the roller mechanism concealed within the back wall of the house. The side channels were powder coated to match the glazing structure. Blinds were made using Goodrich 1% Screen material to provide maximum protection without reducing noticeable light.

111 The Strand, is an eight storey landmark office and retail building in central London. The property occupies a corner position on the Strand with a return frontage to Savoy Place. The majority of the 30,549 ft² office space is let to CVC Capital Partners.The iconic building is well-known for its contemporary appearance. The limestone façade with metal frames with curved bays of stone and glass, and a stone relief depicting the surrounding area truly stands out.With the recent acquisition of the long leasehold office building, the private equity firm CVC Advisors Ltd found it time for a complete refurbishment. The existing reception area and office floor 1 to 6 were stripped and upgraded to Category-B Standard. This is inclusive of new MEPH installations and a commercial kitchen fit out to service the meeting room suites and dining areas.Stravifloor Channel, a floating floor system using isolated steel channels with proprietary elastomeric pads, four layers of plywood, and a special damping layer was installed in the catering kitchen on the 5th floor of this fit-out project. The isolated steel batten system with enhanced stiffness was designed to minimise the transfer of impact noise to the office floors below.During the installation, an elastic Perimeter Strip was applied around the floors’ perimeter, to completely decouple it from the building structure.

Architects at the Rathbone Partnership in South Devon contacted us in 2011 about a new feature in the garden of Buckfast Abbey. They had a creative and inventive plan to transform a section of the garden into a tranquil retreat for both the visitors and the monks. What a transformation! Our grilles are used to make stunning architectural features such as this bridge over the waterway channel and blend perfectly complimenting stone and water in a way that only cast iron can. Maida Vale Studios is a complex of seven BBC sound studios of which five are in regular use. Since its launch in 1934, the studio has been used to record thousands of classical music, and dramas for popular radio channels such as BBC Radio 1/2/3 etc. It has also been the home to BBC Symphony Orchestra. Installing recessed Matting at the Entrance of the BBC Studios a great way to sustain the life of the flooring beyond therefore improving the aesthetics of the interior and enhancing the building.

Hitherfield Primary School & Children’s Centre provides community and children’s services and extended day care for pre-school age children in Streatham. The £1.2m project at Hitherfield was won by Architype whose philosophy is “to be bold and honest in the use and expression of materials, rooted in environmentally sustainable design and based on simple strong ideas”.Lang+Fulton were asked to supply non-climbable, Novara-34 barrier fencing, adjacent to the ramp which provides wheelchair-friendly access. The 1250mm wide grating panels and 130x15mm flat bar posts with base plate fixings were specified by the architect to accommodate any potential loading to the fencing. Entrance gates were made to match with provision for intercoms.Finish: hot-dip galvanized

The construction of the West Bromwich Leisure Centre developed a strong relationship between, architect, main contractor, sub-contractor and manufacturer as well as the major development of a state of the art leisure facility. Mapei UK products were specified on all areas and were on site from the beginning ensuring that full support was given to all aspects of the project development, assisting with full specifications covering M10, M20, M40, M50, J30, and K21, from the general application of screed to the finer detail of waterproofing drainage channels.

For Genesis Middlesbrough FC is the local team of most of the staff and when Cleveland Land Services Ltd were doing work to the stairs leading to the Directors Box at the stadium we were pleased they kept the work local and went with a Genesis Heavy Duty Nosing. The NHD range is designed for use with Carpet, Carpet Tiles or other resilient flooring in heavy use areas and the Double Channel design chosen not only allowed for the team colours to be utilised but also provides a wider area of anti-slip tread for areas of high traffic.

St Benet Biscop Catholic Academy, in Bedlington, Northumberland, was undertaking a full building refurbishment and required low maintenance blinds that wouldn’t get sucked out of the windows. They installed the YewdaleDefiant® C40T sidewinder blind. This cassette system retains the fabric with studs integrated into the fabric. This holds the fabric into the side channels meaning there is no chance of the blind blowing in the wind. The barrel is enclosed within a headbox which protects the fabric and helps with keeping the blind low maintenance and looking good. Read more about this project.

Lionweld Kennedy designed, fabricated and supplied modular flat packs of both steel and GRP gratings, handrails, barrier ladders and gates to the 'GDF Suez Cygnus Bravo' gas field, which is owned by Heerema Fabrications. Using both steel and GRP, Lionweld Kennedy were able to design a system of walkways and handrails around the 250km2 field. Cygnus Bravo is an unmanned satellite wellhead platform tied-back to Cygnus Alpha’s processing platform. Cygnus Bravo is located approximately 150km off the coast of Lincolnshire, UK.Both our steel and GRP products can withstand harsh environments, such as oil rigs due to their durability from the high-quality material.Using both products in conjunction allows for a cost-effective flooring and safety solution for the client.

Contacted by Tefken Construction, we designed, fabricated and supplied modular flat packs of both steel and GRP gratings, heavy duty barrier rails, gates, ladders, treads and handrails to the 'Chirag Oil Field'.Our designers ensured that all material and placements could withstand the given environment. Using both steel and GRP allowed for cost efficiencies for the client, while maintaining a great strength for their platforms and rails.Our modular flat packs allow the client to install their flooring and other items easily.Chirag is an offshore production, drilling and quarters (PDQ) platform located 120km east of Baku in the Caspian Sea, at a water depth of 120 meters.First oil from the platform was achieved on 28 January 2014.Total Chirag production was on average 53,000 barrels per day.

As the leading manufacturer of fire and smoke curtains, Coopers were appointed to develop a smoke curtain system to provide an unintrusive method capable of controlling smoke migrating from the lower floors. It was also necessary to protect the un-insulated glazing installed above the atrium’s reception area with an approved fire curtain barrier system approved to provide a one hour insulating zone. Coopers manufactured, installed and commissioned two SmokeStop smoke curtains developed to control smoke generated in the event of fire and effectively channel it away from occupants during evacuation.

Gatic Civil Drainage was recently specified for Waitrose’s new store in Oxford for its CastSlot system from its market-leading Slotdrain range. Gatic’s CastSlot is designed to create a continuous interception of surface water, as well as provide a discreet and durable surface opening. Manufactured in three metre lengths of galvanised steel, it benefits from fewer joints and improved flow performance. A high flow inlet and channel capacity meant CastSlot provided a tidy, unobtrusive and functional solution. The cast iron finish gives the system a highly durable and ductile iron top.

St George Wharf consists of 750 apartments and offices, cafés, restaurants, a health and fitness centre as well as an international hotel. The project centres around 5 towers ascending in steps up to the 22nd storey. The top levels, directly under the striking wing-roofs, consist of penthouse suites with sea-green glass facades. Due to the fantastic location of St. George Wharf a complex has been created, which offers a high level of exclusivity, convenience and comfort. JORDAHL® supplied anchor channels JTA for connecting the elements of the glass façade.

Standard Life Investments’ new £75m development at St Andrew Square in Edinburgh, as with many modern builds, it is fronted with lots of glass. It looks amazing and delivers plenty of natural light, but often requires robust shading solutions to protect people from the sun’s glare and heat. The fit-out company opted to use YewdaleDefiant® R20 systems with side channels throughout, and the YewdaleDefiant® R20M with double bracket. Aluroll were engaged by a client working on behalf of Foster and Partners (F&P) to develop a unique barrier system for the Apple Store in China.The ChallengeAluroll were engaged by a client working on behalf of Foster and Partners (F&P) to develop a unique barrier system for the Apple Store in development at the Sands Cotai Casino in Macau, China.Due to structural constraints and aesthetic requirements a standard roller shutter solution will not work. These requirements were set by the building’s landlord and without satisfying them the project would not be approved.The SolutionOnce the client had made their preferred shutter style choice (welded tube & link), Aluroll commissioned a second round of prototype tests which involved building a full-scale 9153mm x 5000mm prototype with removable 150mm guide channels.Weight and barrel calculations from the smaller prototypes suggested a maximum tube and link roll diameter of 388mm, which was within the 400mm space. All three tube and link curtain design options were built to full scale and tested on the same barrel and guide channel framework.Aluroll’s extensive research, design and testing stages ensured the final product met the unique requirements of the initial brief successfully. Aluroll visited site in Macau in December 2018 to survey site and confirm all dimensions for manufacture. Apple and F&P requested that Aluroll co-ordinate the installation via a local contractor (YK).Read Dezeens take on the store opening here
