Recognising their long-standing commitment to exceptional customer service and product excellence, partitioning experts Style has been named by Willmott Dixon as both the winner of their National Goods Supply Chain Award, as well as Goods Supply Chain Partner of the Year.  In addition, Style was recently awarded their 12th FIS Gold Contractors’ Award for their creative moveable wall installations at the new Londoner Hotel. “It is fantastic to receive such high acclaim from our partners,” said Julian Sargent, Style’s group managing director. “The awards reflect both the strength of our team and the high quality of the Dorma Hüppe and Skyfold moveable wall systems, for which we are sole UK distributors.”Style has worked with Willmott Dixon for many years, providing innovative moveable wall systems across a wide variety of sectors. “Style sometime go under the radar as they are so effective and efficient when they survey and install that our site teams just don’t have to worry about them,” comments Andy Pritchard, head of supply chain for Willmott Dixon, London and South. “However, their performance scores certainly don’t go unnoticed, with 81% achieved over five projects, they are leading the way. Great effort from all parts of their business and well-deserved winners.” At The Londoner Hotel Style worked with architect Woods Bagot, interior designer Yabu Pushelberg, and contractors Blue Sky Building & EE Smith Contracts, to deliver extensive flexible space in the main ballroom and meeting rooms. The FIS judging panel personally visited and assessed the installation, commenting that ‘the finished product is superbly fixed, of the highest quality and provides the flexibility that perfectly complements this hotel.’

HEART OF MIDLOTHIAN FOOTBALL CLUB - STADIUM CASE STUDY INSTATAP

Zip Water

Edinburgh based football club, Heart of Midlothian Football Club (Hearts FC) is a city institution and its Tynecastle stadium is classed as a ‘must-visit’ destination for any football-mad tourist. The recent multimillion pound redevelopment has seen it undergo a major transformation to ensure visitors have the most memorable and safe experience possible. It’s no surprise that football fans want refreshments while at the stadium, so the concourse houses a number of food and drink kiosks around the ground. Something that can be found at each and every kiosk is an Instanta InstaTap – and with 30 new machines purchased as part of the refurbishment programme, that takes the total up to 50 so far.“We originally started using Instanta about three years ago”, comments Graeme Pacitti, head of hospitality and catering operations, “after the competitor product we were using back then just kept breaking down. We looked around for a replacement and narrowed it down to two products, but went with Instanta because we liked the idea of being with a British manufacturer. It means if we do need to contact the team, it’s very quick and efficient.” Graeme is impressed with not only how the Instanta products work, but also how well they fit in to the kiosks. “We have both under-counter and counter-top water boilers, and they fit the compact space very well, but still deliver the high volumes we require on match days. They also look good and are extremely reliable.” Ben McCosh of Arumba Coffee, who supplies the stadium with its catering machines, adds: “The Instanta machines deliver what they promise. Match days are hectic, with a lot of pressure on the refreshment kiosks, but the water boilers don’t let the team down.”

The panels are moved into place manually, whereupon impressive rubber seals automatically expand to exactly the right pressure to create an effective acoustic barrier. With the glass and solid moveable walls boasting 47dB and 46dB acoustic ratings respectively, formal and informal meetings can take place without outside disturbance. AECOM, the world’s trusted infrastructure consulting firm, has bought the Glasgow team together on one site at the new Bothwell Street offices. Reverberation solution for multi-purpose hall at Thackley Primary School, Bradford

Reverberation solution for multi-purpose hall at Thackley Primary School, Bradford

Sound Reduction Systems Ltd

BackgroundThackley Primary School in Bradford is a well-established suburban school providing education for children aged 3-11. The school’s positive ethos seeks to provide a happy and active environment for learning, with teachers and staff dedicated to working hard to secure the highest educational standards for their pupils. With more than 450 pupils, the building can become extremely busy during school hours, both in classrooms and communal areas. That was presenting some challenges in terms of acoustics in certain areas of the school, particularly in its multi-use hall which is used for performances, PE lessons and dining.ProblemThackley Primary School’s multi-use hall is a large, open plan room which, like many internal environments of this type, features extensive areas of hard, reflective surfaces. When the room was in use, particularly when occupied by a large number of pupils and staff, excessive reverberation and echo was making it an unpleasant acoustic environment.Head of the School, Annette Patterson, sought to find a solution to these issues and approached Sound Reduction Systems (SRS) given the company’s experience in resolving these types of acoustic problems in schools. At the initial enquiry stage, Annette provided details about the school hall, including dimensions and photographs, from which the SRS technical department was able to model the space using their acoustic software. This enabled the team to propose a provisional solution with a specification and provide a quote. Once the proposed solution was agreed in principle, an acoustics specialist from SRS visited the school to take detailed measurements and discuss the various options available to arrive at a detailed specification.SolutionImmediately on receipt of Annette’s request for help addressing this acoustic issue, the SRS team confirmed reverberation was indeed excessive and reducing it would make a huge difference. SRS Director, Alex Docherty, commented:“As soon as I was shown into the hall, it was clear that the acoustic environment was not ideal – the long reverberation time made it difficult to hold a simple conversation between a few people comfortably, let alone when the hall was full of children. It was clear that a treatment using one of our Class A rated Sonata products was required to solve the issue.”Prior to any improvements, the estimated mid-frequency reverberation time was recorded at (Tmf) 3.57s. This level is considered excessive for a room of this nature. SRS calculated that 75sqm of their decorative Sonata panel absorbers would be required to solve the problem, bringing the reverberation time down to (Tmf) 1.13s.SRS provided the school with a layout design detailing where the panels would be installed within the hall. The school chose a combination of Suspended Sonata Vario panels and bonded Sonata Aurio panels and SRS were able to despatch their installation team within 2 weeks to fit the absorbers.Client feedback“I just wanted to say a huge thank you for the acoustic panels we had fitted. The whole process was great - from making initial contact with you, site survey, and fitting. You were always so helpful and knowledgeable when I contacted you. The wonderful man who came to fit the panels was just lovely! Really professional, friendly and had a high standard and a high quality of fitting.“The impact of the panels has been simply fantastic! What a difference!!! Lunchtimes are now completely different, assemblies are better and PE lessons are calmer. I have been recommending your company to everyone and playing them my ‘before and after’ videos that I made! Thank you again.”Head of Thackley Primary School, Annette Patterson.Products usedSuspended Sonata Vario panels Sonata Aurio panels

Mobilane Essenza Home Living wall

Mobilane

ESSENZA HOME opts for a sustainable green façadeInterior and lifestyle brand ESSENZA HOME has moved into a new, completely renovated office in Bunnik in 2021. The new office is entirely sustainability-oriented. The Mobilane green façade at Essenza Home contributes to the company’s sustainability vision and provides a warm welcome for its retailers, customers, and staff. Family business ESSENZA HOME has been designing, producing, and distributing home & living products to suit various interior styles for 60 years. In 2021, the company moved to a new office in Bunnik. The building of no less than 2500 m2 is located directly on the A12 motorway. The new premises was built with an eye to the future and aligned with their sustainability vision. Therefore, the sustainable green Mobilane façade was a logical choice.Installation of the green façadeThe installation of the green walls was quick and easy. The green walls, with a total surface area of over 200 square meters, were placed against the stone and wooden façade by means of Magnelis steel omega profiles. The design incorporated the window and door sections and the water and electricity pipes. The almost 10,000 plants are installed in modular cassettes and pixels attached to the profiles. All of the cassettes, pixels, and covers are made of a fire-retardant EPP (B-s2, d0). This material is light, UV-resistant, air-permeable (for good root growth), and fully recyclable. An automated irrigation system provides the MobiPanel green walls with water and nutrients.Plant selection for the green façadeThe plants in the green facades were selected according to various factors. The orientation of the façade, the different flowering seasons, plants that stimulate biodiversity, and, finally, aesthetics were all considered. For example, Bregenis ‘Bressingham White’ is a beautiful spring bloomer with elegant white flowers that bloom from April onwards. The Vinca minor is a strong evergreen covering plant. It also flowers very early in spring. Vinca minor can be used on facades in both sunny and shady spots. The Vinca will produce more flowers in the sun than in the shade. Geranium Rozanne is a carrier plant for wild bees. Many species of wild bees, as well as butterflies and bumblebees, find their nectar here.Advantages of the green façadeThe green wall on the two outer walls is a real eye-catcher. Floor Smits, Head of Brands and second generation in the family business: “As a family business, we find it important to focus on the long term. During the renovation, we, therefore, invested heavily in sustainable solutions. When we were introduced to the possibility of a vertical garden for the façade, we were immediately enthusiastic. The green wall has many advantages, such as purifying the air, increasing biodiversity, and providing a nice haven for bees and other insects. Finally, we want to make a statement and show that we are committed to a sustainable world.” In addition to the office, there is also a b2b showroom and a brand store will be opened for consumers this year.Increased biodiversityRosalie Smits, Head of Channels and also the second generation of the family business, indicates that biodiversity is an important spearhead for the organization. The green façade attracts many insects, thus stimulating biodiversity in the area. As described earlier, the flowers of Geranium Rozanne, among others, provide nectar for many insects such as the wild bee and butterflies. Wild bees and butterflies are an important link in our food chain. They provide 60% of the pollination of our fruit and vegetables. The facades also attract various birds and other insects and serve both as food and as nesting and hiding places. In the cassettes between the plants, birds can nest safely. The first bird’s nest in the green façade at Essenza Home was found just a few weeks after installation.Client: ESSENZA HOMEArchitect: BK PuntConstruction period: 2021Installation: MobiCare

Heated Z Lockers at University of Derby

Helmsman

Located within the Kirtley building, close to the cycle storage compound, are changing facilities with a number of showers, hairdryers and mirrors. As part of the upgrade to these facilities, the University has installed Heated Z Lockers. The shape of these lockers was chosen so that the user has the full height of the locker to gently dry their clothes and equipment that they used to cycle to university. This unique shape makes them the perfect design for heated lockers. Simply hang your damp clothes inside and let the Heated Z Locker do the hard work. Air flows easily inside the locker, with a perforated base, and perforated slots at the top allow the damp air to escape. Single and twin tube heaters are available, with the heat source plugging into a 3-pin power socket, or wired into a fused switch.A range of materials and colour finishes are available, and the University of Derby chose Laminate Z Locker doors in two colours. Laminate is a great choice of material as it creates a more Heavy Duty locker less likely to scratch, dent or damage. With a large range of laminate manufacturers, including a carbon-neutral laminate supplier, our Heated Z Lockers can be a bright pop of colour through to a neutral wood affect laminate. The University of Derby chose two contrasting laminate colours in colours Sage and Elegant Grey from BioCarbon Laminates, providing a modern look to the Z Lockers. The lockers were also manufactured with seat stands, with the slats matching Elegant Grey door colour from BioCarbon Laminates. We can also provide a range of accessories, from multiple lock options through to wrist straps, particularly popular with leisure centres and gyms. Wood Wharf - Canary Wharf Contractors

Wood Wharf - Canary Wharf Contractors

WM | Wetroom Materials

Wood Wharf consists of 2.6 million sq ft of residential space including up to 3,600 new homes offering the very best in city and waterside living. A Bespoke Shallow Wet room Drainage was required to fit within the POD manufactures and the Architects Design constraints. THE CHALLENGE Wood Wharf is a new district in Canary Wharf which is creating a vibrant new urban quarter. The size of the project itself poses a challenge due to the logistics that go into conducting work at various points throughout the site at any one point. The decision to have the wetrooms and bathrooms constructed off site by POD manufacturing would mean that time spent on site would be drastically reduced, however a bespoke drainage offering would have to be made available in order to present a drainage solution that would fit within the confines of the POD system. Due to the nature of the project, a sophisticated design would be needed within the bathroom in order to tie in with the rest of the interiors of the residential apartments. THE SOLUTION Wetroom Materials worked closely with the POD Manufacturer to present a wetroom system that would be able to adapt to the demands of the POD construction. Wetroom Materials have a range of different channel lengths that can be used on a variety of projects with different requirements; a channel length was specified around the parameters of the space available. Due to the limited floor depths within the suggested POD construction, Wetroom Materials offered a low-profile system starting from just 64mm, that still had the capacity to take a large flow rate. On the back of Wetroom Materials’ advice, the wetroom design was altered to have the drain running along the long wall in order to minimise the required floor depth needed to slope the floor space to allow the water to fall to the drain gulley, whilst still providing a level entrance point across the threshold to the shower area. The drain finish chosen was the HighLine Panel. The reason for this choice was to provide a clean, minimalistic finish that kept in line with the high-end nature of the entire project, while still providing a function and durable product that will stand the test of time. In succeeding to provide a drainage solution that adapted to the requirements of a POD construction, Wetroom Materials were able to reduce the project timescale and increase the site’s work efficiency.

The Lanark Hydro Electric Scheme is a remarkable project. When it was completed in 1927 it was the first of its kind in the United Kingdom. The Scheme refers to two hydroelectric plants in Clydesdale, South Lanarkshire, Scotland: Bonnington and Stonebyres’ Power Stations. They both take water from the beautiful Falls of Clyde. Bonnington’s water comes from just above the Linn in New Lanark and Stonebyres from above Stonebyres Linn near Kirkfieldbank. The abundant supply of water from the River Clyde continuously spins the power stations’ turbines providing a reliable and sustainable source of renewable electricity. Combined, they create enough electricity to power over 17,000 homes in the UK.  The two stations have been exquisitely refurbished by our client Drax, who acquired them as part of a £702 million deal. Both Bonnington and Stonebyres are category ‘A’ Listed Buildings, the highest possible grading, as a site of national architectural importance. This means it was imperative the new steel windows were as close a match as possible to the originals. The Clement W20 steel window range with genuine T bars, was chosen for the two Power Stations. Polyester powder painted in striking RAL 6005 Moss Green. Lodsworth handles complement the windows with matching peg stays in Antique Bronze finish. Clement made around 120 steel windows for the projects, including nearly 400 individual fixed lights, but the most beautiful is perhaps the enormous curved head windows on both sides of the buildings, which look spectacular and let in masses of natural light.  Drax Group senior civil engineer Anne Kerr said “We are delighted with the service and quality of windows supplied and fitted by Clement. The new steel windows fitted in the refurbished building look stunning and exceed our expectations."

Former Church gets new lease of life with new steel windows and doors, after being renovated into four superb homes

A chapel was first built at Swan Hill in the town of Shrewsbury in 1767. In 1868, this was demolished and replaced with the current building; schoolrooms were then added in 1880. Charters Property Ltd who specialise in property development, consultancy and project management, recently purchased the deconsecrated church and have transformed the building into a prestigious development of four fabulous homes.Sensitivity was key when renovating the property and the majority of the original features have been preserved. Original stone walls, lintels and cills have been repaired and impeccably replaced. The walls and roofs have been insulated and energy saving measures implemented to create a comfortable, efficient living environment.Although it was possible to restore some of the original fenestration, double glazed replacement steel windows were still required throughout the building. Clement were thrilled to manufacture these new steel windows and doors. Various Clement ranges were used to meet the different criteria required for the project. For example, the Brooking range was used for the beautiful arched head windows on the front elevation as it would best replicate the originals which would have been silicone fronted. EB16 was used for other windows where silicone fronting was not required and W20 was used to make the steel doors. In total over thirty individual windows were specified, all in various shapes and sizes.Clement Conservation Rooflights were also specified, which bring masses of light in through the beautiful, high ceilings.James Charters, Director of Charters Property said “We were very pleased with the attention to detail and finish of the steel windows, Clement took ownership of their section of the project and were able to deliver a complex scheme on time and to a very good standard. They remained client focussed throughout and we will happily use their service again.”Photography: Photos supplied by Charters Property and taken by Kate Sanders Photography

The Head of Security at a prominent London University was faced with key security issues when the organisation took over the security of an old building. The large ground floor building led directly onto a public pavement and housed academic and research staff with valuable computer equipment. The Security Team needed to find a way of securing the building, especially the large windows, without replacing them entirely.Bernadette Duncan (MBE) Chief Operating Officer of AUCSO explained the options they looked into:“We considered installing bars on the windows but did not want the building to look like a jail block or draw attention to it. The staff were also concerned about the sunlight on the south facing side of the building, so we would also need to install blinds. After looking at several options we selected 𝐒𝐄𝐂𝐔𝐑𝐀𝐁𝐋𝐈𝐍𝐃𝐒® as the best option to maximise security, as well as giving the occupants the option to use the blinds on sunny days.”Bernadette went on to explain the other benefits of 𝐒𝐄𝐂𝐔𝐑𝐀𝐁𝐋𝐈𝐍𝐃𝐒®:“From the public side, the blinds looked like normal vertical blinds, so did not draw attention as a highly protected building or a potential target for thieves. In the evening when the lights were on, the blinds could be closed to provide privacy and at night time could be locked to provide a secure screen against vandalism or a forced entry. It was the ideal solution for us.“The 𝐒𝐄𝐂𝐔𝐑𝐀𝐁𝐋𝐈𝐍𝐃𝐒® team measured the windows and manufactured them for a bespoke fit. The delivery and installation timings were agreed and everything was fitted in time for the building to be occupied. The blinds gave the staff the required feeling of privacy and security, without feeling barred in. A great product which suited the building and a good team behind them.”Bernadette Duncan (MBE) Chief Operating Officer of AUCSO

Balance self-levelling pedestals for luxury rooftop living

Balance self-levelling pedestals for luxury rooftop living

Wallbarn Ltd

Balance pedestals form Wallbarn provide ultimate in precision and performance for roof terrace construction. This large roof terrace in a luxury residential redevelopment of a commercial block next to the Royal Courts of Justice demanded a high end finish. The roof deck had been waterproofed and insulated and 50mm limestone slabs needed to be raised and supported to achieve optimum drainage and ventilation to the structure. The client wanted a flat upper surface with no ridges or interruptions between individual slabs and the Balance self-levelling pedestals were able to create a smooth upper surface with reduced trip hazard and more attractive aesthetics across the terrace. The self-levelling nature of the headpiece meant any blemishes on the surface beneath such as laps between the waterproofing layers and drains, services etc. were accommodated easily without any noticeable effect on the upper surface.Because the self-levelling headpiece has an optic type mechanism it moves in all directions and achieves a perfectly flat upper level by itself, there is no need for installers to wind up and down separate segments of the head. it creates a better finish in much less time. The installer on this project simply loves Balance and will not use any other brand for self-levelling solutions. The limestone slabs were installed in a staggered layout and the Balance pedestals coped with this easily as the positioning lugs could be snapped off at T junction and other detail areas to create clean finishes. Weight tolerance was a major issue as heavy planters, a large barbecue, seating and other furniture were to be placed onto the slabs. Balance pedestals have a normal weight tolerance of 683kg each and a break point of over 1 tonne, so could cope with the additional weight easily. The end result was stunning. The client was delighted with the result and used this terrace on the show flat for the whole development.

Marshalls plc

The £30 million Barbara Hepworth Building at the University of Huddersfield houses the School of Art, Design and Architecture for the University. Named after the famous Yorkshire-born sculptor, this new addition to the campus represents an excellent achievement in modern architecture and can be found by the side of the canal that runs through the University.Working closely with Morgan Sindall Construction and AHR Architects, OOBE were tasked to deliver a landscape masterplan for the new addition to the University’s campus. The brief was to design a landscape that fitted seamlessly with the industrial context of the building and natural nearby environment, whilst providing opportunities for students and faculty to socialise.OOBE incorporated the significant level changes between the building and canal into the design, developing several terrace spaces into this previously underused space. The internal environment also inspired the landscape design, which includes a new plaza and sculpture court that wraps around the building, helping showcase the University’s innovation and creativity. As a neighbour of the University of Huddersfield, with our head office being only five miles away, Marshalls has been a proud supplier for a large number of the University’s outdoor spaces for years, and we are thrilled to supply our British-made Modal Concrete Paving for the hard landscaping around this new, iconic building. We spoke to Mike Goodall, the Director of OOBE, about their work on the canal-side and his choice of materials “We had to make sure that the landscape design for the canal side sat in harmony with this award-winning building, its surroundings and wider masterplan proposals, including work around the main entrance carried by other landscape architects. By incorporating the same high-quality, durable landscaping materials used across the campus from Marshalls, it was great to find the right product from their range of options that complemented the building and helped bring to life this vastly inspirational space.”

Heated Z Lockers at BT Bristol

Heated Z Lockers at BT Bristol

Helmsman

As a part of the development of the company, BT are planning to reduce their number of working locations from over 300 to just 30. BT Bristol features flexible workspaces, the latest IT and smart building technology, restaurants and cafes and a rooftop wildflower meadow terrace with panoramic views of Bristol. An important aspect of the development of this new building was its eco credentials. With the whole company seeking to reduce its carbon emissions, choices were made throughout the design and build process to support this aim. As well as the rooftop meadow, the building features a heating system from the low-carbon district heating network and aspects that encourage employees to make greener choices about their travel to and from work. In order to support this, the BT Bristol office building features parking for around 270 bicycles, as well as changing rooms, showers and lockers.Helmsman were excited to be contacted by Honeyfield Property Services to supply and install the lockers at BT Bristol. The client requested Heated Z Lockers, with hasp locks for the user to attach their own padlock.Heated Lockers are a great addition to a cycle storage area, providing a storage solution that can dry damp clothes as well as keep your items safe during the working day.The Z shape is a particularly good choice for heated lockers, as the user can hang their clothing in the taller area of the locker and let the heated locker do the hard work.Air flows through the locker through a perforated base, and perforations at the top of the locker allow the damp air to escape. The tube heaters are positioned within the stands of the locker and can be either plugged into a 3-pin power socket or wired into a fused switch. In keeping with BT Bristol’s aim for carbon efficiency, the laminate used for the project was Graphite by BioCarbon Laminates. This is one of Helmsman’s standard laminate options, and is a carbon neutral material. In addition to the lockers, we also supplied and installed seat stands, with adjustable feet, and ash hardwood seat slats. The stands, back and sides of the lockers were all cladded with matching Graphite laminate, and the lockers were finished with black circle discs with white numbering. It was great to work with Honeyfield Property Services on this project, and wish the BT Bristol office much success in the future. If you have a similar project, or want to find out more about our Heated Lockers, give us a call on 01284 530427 or fill in our contact form here.
