The decision was made to overclad the blocks using Soltherm Ultimate HD Silicone system with DecoBrick W HD render.Soltherm Ultimate Silicone EWI system is a BBA approved external wall insulation system incorporating Dual Density Mineral Wool (DDMW) with a silicone render finish, designed to increase a building’s thermal efficiency & weather resistance. The client wanted to achieve a modern and contemporary look, whilst improving thermal efficiency. Therefore, a unique brick effect render finish with various thickness feature pods on the façade was selected. The aim was to reduce heating costs for tenants that in turn will help to reduce any that are in fuel poverty, whilst improving the appearance of the properties.Installing Soltherm’s Ultimate HD Silicone A2,S1,d0 fire rated system with incorporating varying thicknesses of mineral wool to achieve projections within the elevation has created a modern contemporary look to the façade by utilising both silicone render and brick effect finishes. Using 100mm DDMW (Dual Density Mineral Wool) meeting minimum 0.30W/m2K along with 120mm to 230mm (various thicknesses) has reduced heating costs and therefore CO2 emissions and achieved an EPC rating of C.

THE BUILDING SAFETY FUND IN ACTIONBuilding for safety remains a top priority in the UK. So much so, hundreds of millions in funding has been allocated to the remediation of buildings across the nation, provided they can demonstrate significant levelling up of safety for building occupants. As a result of successful applications and tenders to the Building Safety Fund, construction and retrofit works are now happening up and down the United Kingdom, creating safer places to live and work. Our latest example comes from Gainsborough Studios where, together with Soltherm, Guildmore have not only restored an iconic British residence which is steeped in cultural history, but they have also improved fire safety in the building to unprecedented levels, using the Ultimate A1 HD Mineral system; a system that is the first of its kind in this country.

Soltherm External Insulations

In the wake of the Grenfell Tower disaster, Westminster City Council (WCC) and City West Homes took a very proactive approach to evaluating their high-rise stock and identifying any tower which could be considered a fire risk. Consequently, after a wholesome Type 4 (invasive interior and exterior) evaluation, steps were taken to replace the Alucobond A2 Aluminium Composite Material Panel with a Soltherm EWI system across 6 Number 18 – 20 storey blocks within the Little Venice suburb. From the pool of EWI systems available, WCC had elected to install Soltherm Ultimate HD Silicone. Offering industry leading options to enhance the building facade fire safety to A2, specifying this unique system future proofed against changes to regulatory fire standards.Soltherm Ultimate HD Silicone was installed achieving the target U’ value of 0.28W/mK.

Soltherm External Insulations

Renowned for being cold, wet and windy, the Lambie and O’Conner high-rise blocks in Saltcoats, North Ayrshire needed to be designed to withstand the most testing climatic conditions. The client required an extremely robust, long life system to replace an existing external wall insulation (EWI) system that had reached the end of its effective life. Therefore, Soltherm Endurance 75 Silicone was specified due to its 75 year effective life and advanced maintenance program. The system performance criteria outlined by the client, North Ayrshire Council, listed a minimum reaction to fire of A2-s1,d0, superior wind load performance due to its location, and a minimum 60 year effective life durability.Specifying Soltherm Endurance 75 Silicone met or exceeded the principal criterion. Offering an industry leading 75 year durability and A2-s1,d0 reaction to fire addressed the technical system requirements within the standard system and without introducing project specific design or system enhancements. However, ensuring the system remained secure throughout its design life for both across the 36m (12 storey) high blocks utilised accurate and compliant in-house wind load calculations and technically advanced fixing innovation.

WEST LOTHIAN (LIVINGSTON)

WEST LOTHIAN (LIVINGSTON)

Soltherm External Insulations

West Lothian specified Soltherm FSC Dash as it is an EPS system tested to BS-8414-1 that uniquely offers comparable fire performance to mineral fibre. Whilst future-proofing the fire standards, FSC was recognised as the most cost-effective method of achieving improved fire safety. What’s more, the system has been applauded by OFGEM and consequently awarded the ECO innovation score uplift (+ 30% carbon credit) giving West Lothian budgetary scope to improve 20% more properties than originally planned. Ultimate FSC adopts two unique technologies that when used in combination with dual fixing (stainless steel mechanical anchors and A1 rated adhesive), prohibits the spread of flame, reduces combustibility and most importantly protects the occupant(s).Over 25,000M2 of Ultimate FSC has been installed to date across Livingston. The properties treated are either 2 bedroom sheltered bungalows or 3 bed houses. The project is scheduled to continue throughout ECO 4 with more and more occupants benefitting from not only FSC’s best-in class fire-safety but also a U-value of 0.28W/mK. Averaging an ambient annual temperature of only 7.4 degC, Livingston is recognised as being on Scotland’s Central Eastern “cold belt”. However, occupants have reported not only a significant reduction in fuel bills, but a notably improvement in comfort and health.
