With health and wellness a top priority, a high performance commercial entrance matting system is essential within hospitals and healthcare settings. Using INTRAform DM Low Profile entrance matting with a combination of inserts, BDP created multiple safe and hygienic entrance points to Grange University Hospital (GUH). About the building Serving over 600,000 people, this world-class healthcare facility treats patients needing complex emergency or critical care. Offering 471 beds, it is home to more than 40 specialist services. In addition to the main entrance, the building has multiple access point including staff changing areas, ambulance entrance with associated trolley traffic and other pedestrian entrances to different clinical areas. Many of these entrances are in use 24 hours a day and exposed to the elements. The Solution Following consultation with the INTRAsystems specification team, the architect selected clear anodised INTRAform DM Low Profile entrance matting. With its heavy-duty closed construction aluminium planks, INTRAform DM Low Profile is ideal for locations with high foot and wheeled traffic, such as this busy hospital. The closed construction offers ease of cleaning, while the low-profile design provides a cost-effective solution without compromising performance. Extra-wide insert sections ensure maximum contact with footwear and wheels to deliver optimum dirt and moisture absorption over smaller areas. Along with the clear anodised finish, they also help to minimise strobing which can be an issue when specifying contrasting fibre and wiper bars. Modified Zonal System To maximise performance, all entrances to the hospital use a modified zonal system within a single internal, recessed matwell. All the mats feature an initial section of multidirectional rubber inserts which gives exceptional scrapping action to remove debris and excess moisture at the threshold. At the main and ambulance entrances to the hospital where traffic is heaviest, the mats feature between 2 and 4-metre sections of rubber to ensure multiple footsteps or wheel rotations are affected. Following the initial sections of rubber, INTRAlux Elite fibre inserts thoroughly remove the remaining dirt and moisture. INTRAlux Elite offers exceptional tufting per square metre which provides superior comfort and acoustic absorption. With 92,990 tufts per square metre, INTRAlux Elite can absorb and retain 5.4L/m² - perfect for the inclement Welsh weather. Using INTRAform DM, this back-to-frame Grade A office refurbishment features three bold horizontal stripes of entrance matting to make a striking first impression on visitors. The double-width fibre inserts within the system provide superior dirt and moisture absorption and retention. While the use of the dark-coloured INTRAlux Linear anthracite fibre hides soiling and provides a strong visual contrast to the stone floor.

Visitors to 77 Coleman are welcomed into a spacious 4-metre high reception space with a distinctive entrance mat design created using the INTRAtech entrance matting system. Perfectly blending into its surroundings, the entrance matting at 22 Bishopsgate helps create a blank canvas to showcase the contemporary artwork adorning the foyer. At the main entrances, INTRAflex XT is used in the primary matting area, while a combination of INTRAflex XT and INTRAflex Radial are used within the revolving doors. The mats all feature INTRAlux Linear fibre inserts in Grey 451 to match tonally with the floor. Together, the ribs of the fibre and mix of matting systems provide a subtle textural contrast to the hard surfaces.

Combining the former Mayble Tylecoate and Grosvenor buildings, MMU’s new Arts and Humanities hub uses INTRAflex XT entrance matting for a classic aesthetic.With the listed portico and the internal glass vestibule providing some shelter from the elements, the architect specified a primary entrance matting system with INTRAlux Elite fibre inserts in Anthracite 607. Intu derby is a large shopping centre located in the heart of Derby. Home to over 200 stores, shoppers are sure to find what they are looking for. The centre plays an important role in adding to the vibrancy of Derby city centre and the region, creating a busy hub for its community and tourist industry. Keeping all these shoppers safe is of paramount importance for the centre’s management. As a result, they chose to install the INTRAform DM Heavy Duty Entrance Matting to protect the internal flooring and ensure a clean and safe environment.

INTU Lakeside, in the heart of Essex, is the UK’s first retail and leisure resort. The recent expansion takes the centre to 1.6 million sq ft and is set to increase footfall by more than 2 million p/a. With retail outlets battling against the lure of online shopping, a strong brand is crucial. By incorporating its distinctive green logo within the entrance matting, The Lexicon immediately communicates its brand to shoppers. An architectural marvel located in an area of the capital rich with history.In the centre of one of the most famous cities in the world and a stone’s throw away from the prestigious St Paul’s Cathedral – the commercial entrance matting at Newgate Street had to be as eye-catching as the location it sits in. We were specified early on for this project – working closely with SDS Matting who are familiar with our market-leading capabilities. For this design, incorporating the alternating narrow stone strips was a priority feature for the client – a challenge, but end results like this are always worth the effort.Two products, one Elite solutionThis creative execution called for a combination of two innovative products. For the revolving doors (where foot traffic is always heavily concentrated) INTRAflex XT with Elite fibre inserts was specified to deal with most of the dirt and moisture. As one of our most popular products, INTRAflex XT offers optimum durability, performance and aesthetics. For the strip style beyond the revolving doors, INTRAflex SP achieves the striking finished effect you can see in the photographs.The strips of INTRAflex SP are inset into the terrazzo tiles following the direction of travel. As most Entrance Matting Systems are set perpendicular to the direction of travel, this particular design was a great opportunity for SDS Matting to demonstrate their expertise. Laying the matting perfectly to line up with the entrance matting surrounding the revolving doors was one of the big success stories of this project.The INTRAlux Elite black fibre inserts used at Newgate Street contain a monofilament scraper element to remove dirt effectively and, in the classic black colourway, play into the colour scheme perfectly to complement the architect’s overall foyer design intent.Moving in a new directionQuality was a high priority for this project. The added element of laying the matting in the direction of travel called for a matting product that could be installed with ease. nhow London, located in Shoreditch, is part of the 250 City Road development, designed by Foster + Partners. Run-of-the-mill entrance matting was not an option for this brand. Their disruptive design approach creates iconic interior décor inspired by their location. The space functions as both a hotel and a creative hub, designed to pay ‘tribute to both the city’s industrial past and its tech-filled future’. With exquisite attention to detail, EPR architects consulted with the team to create an entrance matting design that would embrace the creative brief.

After an 11-month refurbishment, Odeon Luxe Leicester Square has reopened its doors as the UK’s first Dolby cinema. Featuring a brand-new state-of-the-art 800 seat main screen with dual-laser projection and Dolby Atmos speakers, the cinema offers the ultimate immersive experience. Making an ImpactOne Great Cumberland Place is 5,511m2 of high-grade office and retail space, over 8 floors behind an Art Deco façade. Each of the three entrances receives hundreds of pounding feet every day. The design ambitions here were to maintain and enhance the historic elements; the curved draft lobby, original hardwood, brass details, and marble floors.Water and dirt collection was the major challenge for all entrances. But, in particular, a dedicated entrance leading to 121 bicycle lockers housed in the basement!We’ve worked with Allford Hall Monaghan Morris (AHMM) on several projects, so they knew INTRAsystems’ premium Entrance Matting products would be up to the task.Combination inserts deliver with efficiencyIn a busy location with so much coming and going, performance, serviceability and longevity were key. This 80mm deep tray sits on a screed base and holds up to 75 litres of water per m², perfect to collect water run-off or direct water contact.Its a great hack for this location, since the doors are open to the elements for longer to allow riders to enter and exit the building.
