Alicante Port - Gatic UltraSlot

Alumasc Water Management Solutions

Alicante Port, the well renowned commercial and cruise ship terminal has been upgraded to benefit from a Gatic Slotdrain high-capacity surface water drainage system.Slotdrain UltraSlot was specified during the re-conditioning of Dock 19 to increase capacity from 300,000 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEU) to 463,000 TEU.“UltraSlot was chosen by specifier SETI, SA, who are well established within the ports sector and who have worked with Gatic products for many years,” said International Sales Manager – Luis Triguero “The engineer in charge was familiar with the mechanical and hydraulic advantages of UltraSlot and requested a competitive price for the project. As Gatic is so well established in the Spanish market, we could exceed their expectations.”UltraSlot is used in external concrete areas which are subject to constant traffic, such as airports and ports. This high-capacity system is designed to ensure sufficient depth of concrete cover over the main body of the channel to withstand ultra-heavy-duty loads of up to F900 - 90 tonnes.“The biggest challenge we faced was ensuring the system could withstand the consistent, heavy traffic that will always be moving throughout the port,” continues Luis. “However, thanks to its capacity to bear heavy loads, UltraSlot proved to be one of the best drainage options on the market.”

Amazon has invested heavily in its UK operations in recent years and more recently with the accelerated growth of online shopping, significantly increasing its number of warehouses across the UK. One such distribution centre is in Kingsnorth, Kent. This 34,000 square metre warehouse opened in 2018 and has benefitted from the installation of a Gatic Slotdrain CastSlot system. With its high-capacity surface water intake and high-performance loading capabilities, the CastSlot system from the Gatic Slotdrain range is specifically designed to bear load ratings of up to F900, which amounts to 90 tonnes – making it the ideal product for major distribution centres such as this. In an area where unremitting, slow turning HGV traffic is a major consideration, Gatic’s CastSlot drainage system provides reliable water management.“Gatic CastSlot was specified by global professional services firm RPS, to provide high-capacity drainage that had a discreet finish, within the service yard and car park for the distribution centre,” said Zach Graham, Gatic Area Sales Manager for London and the South East. “They valued the design put forward to them and accepted to take away unnecessary costs to client and project without reducing performance of the system.”“In addition, RPS have used the Gatic range before and will look to use the system on a design whenever possible.”

A new and vibrant housing development in Chelmsford, Essex recently specified a range of bespoke Skyline solutions where ‘inspirational architecture’ is a key element.Beaulieu Park is a charming new district set around New Hall School, which was originally King Henry VIII’s Tudor palace and estate parkland. The concept behind the development was to create a series of individually designed neighbourhoods, which connect to the wider landscape. “This was an exciting project to get involved with as it was an open specification. This also meant that it was important to get this project absolutely correct commercially,” says John Hemphill, Skyline Technical Sales Manager at Alumasc. “Our work at Beaulieu Park, in conjunction with our customer, involved designing and manufacturing a full and comprehensive range of bespoke Skyline aluminium products such as window pods, copings, canopies, fascia and architectural feature cladding and corner post details.”For this unique project, Skyline collaborated with our ‘Recommended Installer’ Specialised Fixings to deliver and design products that were tailored to each individual house type and plot.

Bell Street Stables - Alumasc Flushjoint

Alumasc Water Management Solutions

The historic Bell Street Stables in Glasgow has recently undergone an extensive conversion, featuring the installation of Alumasc’s Flushjoint aluminium rainwater downpipe system. This magnificent period property has an interesting history. It was built between 1896-98 by A. W. Wheatley, originally to house horses working to pull the Glasgow City Council Cleansing Department’s refuse collection carts. In 1955, the building was redesigned to provide a separate entrance for the Police Department who shared the property with Cleansing until the 1980s. Situated in a prime position within the Merchant City area in the city centre of Glasgow, the building was converted to form 52 mid-market affordable rented flats by the Construction and Manufacturing Group (CCG) on behalf of Glasgow Housing Association (GHA) and Lowther Homes, during a two-year construction programme. The renovation was completed in 2019.A major requirement of the renovation was to conserve as much of the building’s heritage as possible, which included all exterior aspects. This involved the upgrade of the stone elevation, replacing all windows and making repairs to the roof and rainwater system.Flushjoint aluminium downpipes along with contemporary hopper heads were specified for their contemporary design. The installation was completed in a non-standard RAL colour to match and complement the window surrounds.

Bentley ARLFC - Skyline Fascia & Soffit, Rainwater AX & Swaged

Alumasc Water Management Solutions

Bentley ARLFC chooses Alumasc systems for first ever clubhouseBentley Amateur Rugby League Football Club in Doncaster, is celebrating the construction of its first ever clubhouse, creating a fitting tribute to the club’s 60th anniversary year. And to safeguard the future of its beloved new building, the club used a package of industry-leading aluminium rainwater systems from Alumasc Water Management Solutions (AWMS). Bentley ARLFC is a community-run rugby club with 350 registered players and volunteers, including two open-age adult teams, ten junior teams, and more recently, its first girl’s team. The club is a much-loved and significant part of the local Doncaster community, but historically, has led a nomadic existence, playing at various local venues, pubs and working men’s clubs. Following a period of substantial growth, the club officials decided it was time to bring the game home, and set about the design and planning of Bentley’s first ever dedicated clubhouse. The new facility was made possible by various funding resources, including grants from Rugby League World Cup Legacy, Sport England, and numerous local businesses and fundraising initiatives. The completed building, designed and project managed by the architect Tom Elliot of Gilbert Elliot Rowe Limited (GER), is modern and accessible, comprising four changing rooms, two referees’ changing rooms, a bar and kitchen, and a communal area to support the diverse needs of all the club’s members.Located on Bentley Recreation Ground, the project boasts a number of environmental considerations, which included the sensitive relocation of wildlife habitats and significant replanting to increase and support the local ecology. The recyclability of aluminium synchronised well with the project’s strong environmental values, and Club Secretary Kevin Harmer approached Alumasc for their advice. AX half-round gutters and Swaged downpipes from Alumasc Rainwater, and Skyline Architectural Aluminium fascia and soffits, were eventually specified in black by GER.Alumasc then introduced the club to their approved installer Plasufix Limited, who had seen the project being talked about on social media, and were keen to be involved. There was a strict deadline in place for the grand opening; the facilities needed to be ready in time for the last game of the season, and other trades, who were already booked, could not carry out their work until the building envelope had been completed. Plasufix use Alumasc products extensively, and were confident that the installation could be carried out successfully within the required timescales.Working closely with Alumasc, who had measured up and prepared the site in readiness, Dean Garnham from Plasufix, managed the install, and got his team on site immediately.“Having worked with Alumasc products on a substantial number of installations, I was really keen to be involved in this lovely grassroots project, and knew that the tight deadlines wouldn’t be a problem. There were no issues on site, and the high-quality product ensured a quick and efficient install, with no unforeseen challenges. The external works were finished within deadline and in good time for the opening. It was a great team effort, resulting in a very worthy community success story. Plasufix were proud to be involved.”AX is an economical range of extruded aluminium gutter sections designed for traditional wet jointing on site. Three profiles are available in a choice of sizes. The AX range is lightweight and easy to handle and fix, whilst also offering maximum durability and high corrosion resistance. The Swaged extruded downpipe system is fully compatible with AX, and offers a long-life alternative to uPVC gutters.Alumasc’s Skyline facia soffit system was installed around the eavesline, providing a high performance, visual finish. Skyline is manufactured from superior polyester powder-coated aluminium and is available in a selection of standard bold generic shapes. Bespoke designs are available to order.Aluminium is 100% recyclable, carrying a life expectancy of up to 40 years in rural/suburban areas, and up to 25 years in industrial/marine areas.Bentley’s club secretary Kevin Harmer, couldn’t be happier with the completed building, and is looking forward to the new facility benefiting the community that has supported the club for six decades. He comments:“The building of the clubhouse is the single biggest project that the club has ever undertaken. With the growth we have seen over the last 10 years, it was time for us to stand on our own two feet and provide a facility worthy of the club’s current standing. We celebrate our 60th anniversary this year, and for the club management it was important to ensure we have a facility that provides a platform for further growth over the next 60 years and beyond.“We were working to a tight budget, however, we were also acutely aware of our environmental responsibility, and have tried where possible to choose products that not only help protect the environment, but also offer durability and performance that will save us money in the long run. Alumasc offered this in their products, with the enhanced life-cycle, low maintenance and durable ranges we specified. In addition, they look fantastic; their ability to supply the products in our chosen RAL colour to match the doors, windows and roller shutters, has really set off the aesthetics of the building.

Brockley, South East London - Alumasc Flushjoint

Alumasc Water Management Solutions

There is nothing quite like an ambitious project executed to the highest standard. This complete rebuild and extension of a late Victorian terraced house in Brockley, south east London, presented challenges at every turn. The existing house suffered from the addition of poor-quality extensions and structural problems, but was redesigned by Conibere Philips architects with the specification of Alumasc Rainwater Flushjoint downpipes and hoppers. This ensured elegant and efficient water management, as well as security against water ingress into the new masterpiece of a home.“It’s extremely unusual for a mid-terrace to be demolished and rebuilt in this way, but it was decided as the most economic and sensible course of action to take in this case. This also allowed us to adapt the property on rebuilding to look much more contemporary and elegant,” explained Robin Philips, Partner Director at Conibere Philips. Elegance was also firmly the desired direction when considering water management.“We chose to specify Rainwater Flushjoint downpipes and hoppers from Alumasc to maximise on their sleek and minimal design that would further contribute to the contemporary look of the building,” Robin confirms.“The joints in the RWP sections are very elegant. The whole effect is much less cluttered than most other RWP products. A simple, modern elevation would have been ruined with more traditional RWP products.”

Alumasc Skyline Facia, Soffit & Copings, part of Alumasc Water Management Solutions (AWMS), provided the perfect finishing touch for four £2 million homes on the site of a former nursing home in Jersey. The design of the new homes called for a practical fascia and soffit system which would be aesthetically pleasing and competitively priced. The architect, Scott Smith of Godel Architects, worked with Jeff Russ, the contractor, and Precision Plastics, Alumasc’s Jersey stockists, to achieve the perfect look. The first part of the project involved roof clad overhangs and producing a complex fascia/coping system. When the developer, Barry Noel, saw the quality and appearance of the installation, he asked the contractor to use Skyline for the balconies too.“We specified Skyline because we know we can rely on it,” says Contractor Jeff Russ. “It’s easy to handle and its lightweight modular design means it’s easy to fit too. It’s maintenance free, durable and because it’s available in a wide range of colours and design options we know it will look great too.”

On many of the houses there are modern stainless-steel balconies, therefore, to put plastic gutters and drainpipes on these houses, although functional, just wouldn’t look right.“Additionally, the environmental benefits of a steel system vastly outweigh that of a plastic system, which was an important factor in the decision-making process.”Alumasc Rainwater Infinity stainless steel gutters and drainpipes were the most natural choice.Finishing the houses to the best standard possible meant ensuring all accessories matched and upheld the high standards of Chartway Construction and Alumasc.Rainwater Infinity Steel was developed by Alumasc to offer a contemporary, eco-friendly and cost-effective alternative to plastic gutters, that look sleek and have no risk of shrinking, leaking or colour fading.

Wade Linear Channel Drains and Gatic Parade Access Covers from Alumasc Water Management Solutions (AWMS) have been specified for a ground-breaking new leisure project in Surrey.Eclipse Leisure Centre in Knowle Green, Staines-on-Thames, is the UK’s largest wet and dry leisure facility to achieve Passivhaus certification, and the first to do so in London. Designed by GT3 Architects and delivered by main contractor Willmott Dixon for Spelthorne Borough Council, the £43.5 million leisure centre project covers a massive 100,000 square feet, and has been designed to consume 60% less energy than a standard equivalent new building. The impressive new facility boasts an eight-lane main pool, a learner pool, splash pad and spa, a six-court sports hall, three squash courts, three studios, 950 square metres of fitness space and two badminton courts. Visitors can also enjoy the new open plan café and reception space, and the stunning roof terrace overlooking four football pitches.GT3 and Willmott Dixon worked closely together, combining their extensive Passivhaus expertise to ensure the most energy-efficient day-to-day functioning of the new landmark facility. Water management was a key consideration across all areas of the site, and following an in-depth consultation period with Wade and Gatic’s technical teams, a package of robust drainage solutions was specified.Wade Linear Channel DrainsWade Linear Channels and Point Drains have been installed in all the dry and wet changing areas, the shower and steam/sauna rooms, pool side in the main pool and splash pad, and also in the public toilets and cleaner’s store. Linear is manufactured to BS EN 1433, and offers a range of stainless steel channels in various profiles perfect for heavy-duty applications in public and leisure buildings. In order to address a few drainage challenges across the Eclipse Leisure Centre site, Wade’s technical team worked closely with Willmott Dixon to develop a number of bespoke solutions. In tiled areas, the Linear Channels were manufactured to suit specific tile sizes, with outlets located in areas appropriate to the tile layout.Outlets in the splash pad also required extra consideration, as the channel did not lead to a drain, but to a balancing tank from which the water could be recycled. In this case, the traps were removed and the outlet size was reduced from the standard 110 mm to 75 mm to match the intended pipework.Flow rates in the splash pad were also checked, and the channel arrangements were adjusted to achieve the flow rates required. The original drainage specification had requested minimal falls, but on further discussion to ascertain exact requirements, Wade’s technical team was able to suggest increased falls in accordance with the floor makeup, which assists with self-cleaning.Gatic Parade Access CoversGatic Parade offers a range of stainless steel and aluminium access covers designed to be aesthetically modest, whilst remaining just as robust as Gatic’s ductile iron covers in terms of performance. Parade is available in single, duct, trench and multi-span configurations, and can be supplied with hinged, or lift-out covers.Gatic Parade Access Covers now provide essential maintenance access from the ground floor reception area at Eclipse Leisure Centre, into the plant room below, and from the pool viewing area into the basement. The covers were supplied in stainless steel, which seamlessly integrates the client’s need for safe access, with the flooring materials used, keeping visual disruption to a minimum in public areas.Philip Harding is the Chartered Construction Manager with Willmott Dixon. He comments:“Given the nature of the building and the wet areas involved, any drainage products used at Eclipse Leisure Centre had to be capable of withstanding heavy usage in a demanding environment. I worked closely with Technical Advisor Andrew Martin of AWMS, whose input was essential in addressing a number of unique requirements laid down in the original specification. This led to the manufacture of bespoke elements that were invaluable in overcoming the project’s challenges. The resulting installation will contribute to the smooth running and overall efficiency of the new facility for years to come.”AWMS: Leading the way in sustainable drainageThe AWMS ‘Concept to Completion’ process is underpinned by a solid company infrastructure which offers the following:three UK manufacturing plantsnational brand-specific sales team and regional support networkin-house technical teamdesign team to fulfil bespoke design requirementsrainwater and drainage calculations and on-site surveystake off and estimationsin-house, BBA approved powder coating facilitiesunrivalled dedicated UK technical and after-sales supportWade Building Drainage and Gatic Civil Drainage & Access Covers sit under the AWMS umbrella, together with Alumasc Rainwater Gutters & Downpipes; Skyline Architectural Aluminium; and Harmer Building Drainage. The ideas we were working with required floor channels to be formed into complex curves around the perimeter of the space – and we needed a supplier we could trust. We were pleased that such difficult shapes could be fabricated exactly as we expected. The finished product looked great, giving the clean, discreet appearance we wanted.”Richard Palmer, Director of the Headland Hotel, is always keen to use high quality products for all the work required on the 120-year-old building. He worked closely with JE Contractors and Lilly Lewarne to achieve the best possible results. He comments: “It’s important that the best products are always used in the work we do to the hotel, especially when it comes to water management. If the drains ever had to come out, the time and cost would be far more than that of simply using the absolute best products to begin with.”Mark Duston of Lilly Lewarne concludes: “We have worked with Wade before so knew the quality of their products and technical assistance that would be available to us; it was an easy selection to make.” Wade Stainless Steel Hidden Linear Slot Channels are available with either a level inert or in-built falls, minimum depth of channel is 40mm to a maximum of 110mm. Realising a vision with Skyline Architectural AluminiumWhen architect Richard Scott embarked on his own residential renovation project, his design ambitions left nothing to chance. His bid to create a ‘sculpture in the round’ of the surrounding woodlands, required some lateral thinking which eventually led him to Skyline Architectural Aluminium from Alumasc Water Management Solutions (AWMS).Having successfully brought many commercial and residential building designs to life through his practice, Surface Architects, Richard Scott faced the challenge of a lifetime with his own property. Highwood Lodge is now once again a beautiful 1860’s traditional red-brick cottage, but when Richard discovered it in 2013, it had been ravaged by ivy; rendered invisible and forgotten.Over the course of five years, the property was lovingly restored and extended; and it was the modern pavilion-style extension that really allowed Richard’s imagination to fly. His main contractor, Sprinks, recommended the involvement of Phil Lapping from Gutterworks, one of Alumasc’s approved installers. Phil was pivotal in the specification of the Skyline Architectural Aluminium system and worked closely with Richard and AWMS on the intricate design and its resulting challenges.Skyline fascias, soffits and vertical cladding panels were used to create the stunning minimalist modern-build attached to the charming Victorian cottage. It was essential that the materials allowed Richard to realise his artistic vision, and Skyline offered the flexibility needed to meet the project’s complex bespoke requirements. Another significant consideration was that Richard’s design left no place to hide in terms of quality and finish. The clean lines and angular appearance presented a surfeit of elaborate detailing and junctions that demanded precision. Richard explains:“My aim was to create a space that maintained the delicate balance of old and new, whilst presenting a visual abstract within the landscape.“Traditional architecture can be quite forgiving, in that certain elements can be used to cover or disguise other areas which may not appear perfect. But the abstract nature I wanted to achieve with the new extension left every finish, every seam, completely exposed. Different elements needed to meet and align within tolerances of ± 1mm, which presented quite a challenge for all concerned.”Phil Lapping from the AWMS approved installer Gutterworks, comments:“The Highwood Lodge installation was by no means without its challenges, but having had a lot of previous experience working with Skyline, I was confident that it was the right product for this unique job. Gutterworks worked closely with Alumasc’s technical team and the main contractors for the duration of the build, ultimately maximising the potential of the Skyline system and delivering the delicate balance specified in the design brief.”The objective of Skyline Architectural Aluminium, is to give designers the ultimate freedom to push their creativity to the limit and realise solutions of aesthetic merit. The product range is often referred to as ‘a collection of ideas’, based on unsurpassed technical design expertise. All elements are manufactured from superior polyester powder-coated aluminium which is 100% recyclable and available in a selection of standard bold generic shapes with bespoke designs available to order when unusual design elements are at play, such as those at Highwood Lodge.Richard Scott was passionate about his original concept, and remained doggedly loyal to it as the project took shape. The Skyline fascias, soffits and panels were supplied in black and white, creating ‘zones’ which contribute to different ambiances throughout the construction. The final result is a stunning pavilion comprising floor-to-ceiling glazing, an open plan main space incorporating living and kitchen, and a separate bedroom with its own free-standing bath. Richard concludes:“The idea behind the contrasting architectural styles at Highwood Lodge, was to marry abstract with nature. The property grounds now span 10 acres and I see the house as being just one moment within that space.“There is a real feeling here of the inside being a continuation of the outside environment. I make no distinction between interior and exterior in that the internal objects and the building fabric are all part of the same whole. The striking appearance that we achieved with Skyline has helped capture this concept perfectly.”

Hilton Hotel, Minories London - Harmer SML Below Ground

Alumasc Water Management Solutions

Harmer Building Drainage, part of Alumasc Water Management Systems (AWMS), has recently supplied its leading SML below ground drainage system to a major London development. The project, sited at The Minories, Aldgate, sees the introduction of the first Canopy by Hilton hotel in the UK which is scheduled to open in 2018. Working with contractors PCW Drainage Ltd and A J Morrisroe, Harmer supplied below ground drainage for the hotel’s new double storey basement box.The Minories Hilton hotel is a prestigious development, close to London’s historic Roman and medieval city walls and a short walk from the East End. Wayne Wilmot, National Sales Manager for Harmer Drainage comments: “It’s an unusual site. The contractor, A J Morrisroe, constructed a double storey basement box and podium slab to support a 16 storey residential block and a 14 storey hotel extension. It covers a footprint of around 3,500 metres across a narrow site. There were multiple levels of earlier construction to work through, including foundations and piles that date back to the 19th century. And because it’s close to the East End, The Museum of London and 1st Line Defence got involved to establish if there were any WW2 unexploded bombs buried on the site! Definitely not a run-of-the-mill project!

A new distribution centre at Littlebrook Business Park features market leading Gatic CastSlot Littlebrook (Orbital 47) is home to several industrial companies which rely on the near constant movement of goods.“Our work involved the installation of Gatic Slotdrain in a distribution centre at Littlebrook,” said Zach Graham, Alumasc Area Sales Manager for London and the South East. “The distribution centre is in an ideal location due to the surrounding environment with easy access to the M25. Further to this, as the loading area was fairly small, it is put under a lot of pressure every day, with constantly turning vehicles. This meant that any surface water management product installed had to be guaranteed to withstand extremely heavy and frequent loads.”In an area where unremitting, slow turning traffic is a major consideration, Gatic CastSlot, from the Gatic Slotdrain range, was an obvious choice in providing a reliable water management system for this project. Gatic specialises in integrated, high capacity surface water management and Engineered Access Covers, its surface water drainage systems have been used to capture, control and return run-off into the natural water cycle, even in high pressure situations.Gatic Slotdrain’s reputation as a front runner for surface drainage systems in infrastructure hubs such as ports, airports and industrial units, made it first choice for this project, and ideal overall for sites such as Littlebrook.

Gatic Kerbdrain controls the flow at Longstone Road RoundaboutGatic Kerbdrain from Alumasc Water Management Solutions (AWMS) is performing to its full potential as part of a new road layout in Edinburgh. Longstone Road had been experiencing a number of traffic challenges which demanded an upgrade of the existing local infrastructure, including the busy roundabout.Main contractor on the scheme, Luddon Construction, has a well-established and successful relationship with Scotia Supply Co., who had recently become an approved supplier of Gatic Kerbdrain. Dave Kelly of Scotia, was impressed by the product and was instrumental in its successful specification to Luddon for the Longstone Road project. The roundabout presented several challenges, including the demand for a large number of internal and external radial sections of varying degrees. Not only were these sections possible using Kerbdrain, but stocks were also readily available, enabling fast delivery to site, and ensuring all deadlines were met.Dave Kelly comments:“Having seen Gatic Kerbdrain at work in other successful applications, I was keen to become a supplier. My order of stock from Gatic was timely, as it coincided with our involvement with Luddon Construction on the Longstone Road regeneration. We were able to quickly add enough stock for the project onto our original order, securing fast delivery straight to site. The nature of the product also meant that it could be cut easily to accommodate the curvature.”Gatic Kerbdrain is a heavy-duty combined kerb and drainage system (CKD) that provides an efficient and safe method of drainage on potentially any surface or structure with a kerb edge. It moves away from the concept of two-part systems by offering a single, solid, monolithic system. Not only do these single units negate the need for costly handling equipment, they also present exceptionally quick installation times whilst reducing the risk of personal injury.Environmental CredentialsIn addition to price and availablity, Gatic Kerbdrain also addressed the enviromental considerations of the Longstone Road project. Kerbdrain is manufactured using 70% recycled polymers, with every 500mm unit deriving from 199 plastic bottles, caps and closures. The result is a product offering exceptional strength (compliant with BS EN 1433:2002 Group 3 kerbside installations) and improved impact resistance providing it is installed in accordance with Gatic's installation details. End-of-life units are 100% recyclable.Dave Kelly concludes:“The specification of Gatic Kerbdrain at Longstone Road has not only delivered in terms of product performance, but it has showcased the reliability and expertise provided by the Gatic technical team. More projects are in the pipeline, and both Luddon Construction and our team here at Scotia will look forward to working with Gatic again in the future.”Kerbdrain is part of the Gatic civil drainage systems range, which, for more than 90 years, has been used to capture, control and return run-off safely into the natural water cycle, contributing directly to wider sustainable urban drainage systems (SUDS). It is commonly used in retail parks, drive-throughs, distribution yards, along highways and motorways, and within residential housing developments.Gatic Civil Drainage & Access Covers sits under the AWMS umbrella, as one of five brands well known for innovation, quality and longevity. The Port of Huelva in Andalusia has undergone a €40 million expansion, which saw the specification of over a kilometre of Gatic Ultraslot from Alumasc Water Management Solutions (AWMS).Operated by the Turkish group, Yilport, the Spanish terminal is the second largest port in Andalusia and provides a gateway for global cargo trade to multiple continents such as Europe, Africa and the Americas. The project extended the north end of the dock by over half a kilometre. The design and build contract was awarded to Ferrovial Construction, who had previously installed Gatic’s UltraSlot linear channel drainage system at Seville Airport. Ferrovial’s technical team contacted Gatic to develop an in-depth technical and economic assessment of the project’s drainage requirements.Careful consideration was given to a number of options before it was decided that two lines of UltraSlot would be installed with four collectors to accommodate the large amount of surface water on the 16,500m2 esplanade. The installation comprised ten runs with varying channel sizes up to 350mm. This combination of sizes helped to maximise hydraulic capacity and minimize total costs, thanks to the competitive pricing of the 350mm channels.UltraSlot is designed for use in external concrete areas subject to F900 loading, by ensuring sufficient depth of concrete over the main body of the system to withstand ultra heavy-duty loads. It offers high capacity, resistance and durability, and has no moving or removable parts, which positions the system as market leader across the Port sector worldwide. UltraSlot units are available from 100 to 600mm wide; the largest unit capable of handling rainwater intensity up to 1,008 mm/hr. Apex Heritage Cast Iron rainwater system from leading specialist Alumasc was commissioned as part of the £800 million extension and restoration of St Pancras International, London. The extension and interior of the station comprised all the modern facilities expected in Britain’s most advanced station, however, work on the oldest Grade 1 listed part of the station called for the faithful and painstaking restoration of the gothic red brick façade, to retain the original detail of George Gilbert Scott’s design.Existing rainwater systems, despite being almost 150 years old, were still in use. As part of the redevelopment project English Heritage insisted that any new rainwater details must faithfully reproduce the original patterns of the Victorian rainwater goods used when the station was first built. Alumasc worked closely with the main contractors to produce bespoke moulds, creating cast iron replicas of all the existing pipes and hoppers to take away rainwater from the vast single span roof, which is still the largest of its type in the world.
