Manchester Airport

OVERVIEW

BACKGROUND:

Work had commenced on the airport’s 10-year, £1 billion transformation programme.

The objective was to enhance the passenger experience and attract a greater number of the world’s leading airlines.

REQUIREMENT:

We were contracted to supply and install semi-permanent, DDA-compliant wheelchair ramps from the temporary departure lounge—providing accessible routes for both passengers and operational staff throughout the phased redevelopment of Terminal 2.

DESIGN PHASE:

Our in-house design team developed detailed 3D visuals and 2D plans for client approval, ensuring seamless coordination with the main contractor’s programme of works.

A comprehensive fixed-price quotation was also submitted.

Working to a tight deadline, the designs were completed and returned within 24 hours of receiving the initial enquiry.

END RESULT:

Our installation team successfully completed the works on time and within budget, delivering modular ramp systems to both the eastern and southern runway interfaces—fully compliant with all site health and safety protocols.

FEATURES INCLUDED:

  • Anti-climbing Infill Handrail: Prevented climbing and reduced the risk of falls through open sections.
  • Looped Trombone Ends: Prevented clothing from snagging at handrail ends.
  • Slip-resistant Mesh Platform: A multi-directional, self-draining walkway made from galvanised steel mesh.
  • Continuous Handrail: This handrail system ensured that users always had a support to hold onto.
  • Standard Colour: Black: The ramps featured a powder-coated black finish, providing durability that surpassed conventional paint.
  • Solid Hoarding: This skirt was purposefully designed to deter unauthorised access to the underside of the steps, making it a frequent choice for schools and other public buildings.
  • Adjustable Telescopic Legs: Accommodated varying threshold heights with ease.
  • Slip-Resistant Yellow Stair Nosings: Improved visibility of edges and level changes, especially for visually impaired users.
