As a long-standing customer, Blue Forest approached DCM to provide a natural looking surface which would complement the timber-style play equipment.Following the successful completion of the project, DCM has since worked with Blue Forest to install the play surface at Thomas’s Clapham sister school, Thomas’s Battersea, before the enrolment of Prince George in September.The Project Manager at Blue Forest commented:“From the office staff to the on-site installers, DCM worked hard to accommodate our requirements. St Bronagh’s Primary School in Rostrevor, County Down was a newly built school designed by Donnelly O Neill Architects Ltd and constructed by Ganson Building & Civil engineering contractors Ltd.The £3.9 million school was crowned with the Sustainability award in May 2018, replacing the former Convent of Mercy Primary School. This was demolished to make way for this new 7x classroom building, along with the construction of a new youth club building, sports hall, community and games room, and additional accommodation.Upon handover and occupancy, it became apparent that there was scope for improving the acoustic conditions within the new building.The school design itself, was made up of 7x ‘pods’ all of varying heights and reverberation within these areas was an acoustic concern. Working with the Project Architect Paul McMahon of Donnelly O Neill Architects Ltd, we identified that significant improvements could be delivered with the installation of 425 m2 of our Hush Absorber 50 panels to classrooms and resource areas.For practical and aesthetic reasons as well as meeting the required reverberation times, we supplied 286x Hush Absorbing Notice Boards in a neutral colour with a bespoke frame colour to ensure that they blended in with the existing décor.In certain areas we were asked to create a feature wall with the panels and so we used our Hush Absorber 50 panels which were provided in 4 vibrant colours to create both a statement to the chosen rooms as well meeting the required reverberation time.We also provided 3x large printed 50mm panels at high level within the staffroom. These panels were printed with an image of the Cloughmore Stone as requested by the school. The Cloughmore stone is significant to the area and is a giant 50 tonnes granite boulder that sits high above the village of Rostrevor.As well as creating a tailored interior design, the sound absorbing panels provide a practical and efficient way of dampening sound reverberation and eliminating echoes within the rooms.We worked closely with our stockists Commercial Connections in Crossgar, County Down to ensure both site presence and swift responses to technical and installation queries were met. Ganson UK and Hush were able to ensure that all material was supplied over an 8-week period to meet the time frames on site.A multitude of sustainable elements has made this school a successful build and getting the acoustics right has significantly contributed to the school’s success.

A classic Parisian apartment is benefitting from the thermal effectiveness of the introduction of the innovative ultra-thin Spacetherm® WL insulation.Located in the 11th arrondissement in the heart of Paris on Boulevard Voltaire and overlooking the Place de la Republique, the two-bedroom, 135sqm apartment was built in the Hausmann style. Hausmann’s renovation of Paris was part of a major programme commissioned by Emperor Napoléon III in the late 19th century, resulting in the distinctive appearance of the wide avenues, parks and squares which have become associated with this beautiful city.Property owner Keirnan Murphy has made a significant investment in the renovation of the apartment to improve overall comfort, energy efficiency and to reduce heating costs.Keirnan explains, “The solid stone walls, whilst adding to the building’s charm, result in heating inefficiencies and higher heating costs. During summer the stone walls warm during the day, retaining and radiating heat throughout the night. In winter, the solid walls cool down leading to a huge increase in heating costs.We undertook lots of research on solutions for green and energy-efficient renovations. In the research, we considered products available within France and as well as those available internationally. The Spacetherm WL aerogel insulation from the A. Proctor Group was a perfect choice for the apartment. At just 13mm thickness, the Spacetherm WL fits inside the lip of our cornices, which average about 20mm. Typically the walls of these older properties are not completely flat and so the option of an ultra-thin insulation was critical. Most alternatives were thicker and would not have worked.We are very pleased with the results and we noticed that when leaning up against the Spacetherm WL you can feel your back warm against the insulation. The A. Proctor Group were extremely helpful in addressing all the questions from the architect and ourselves. They also provided comprehensive support and guidance to our builder on the installation.”Spacetherm WL is a high-performance laminate specifically designed to be fixed to the internal surfaces of existing solid walls without the need for mechanical fixings. Spacetherm WL consists of Spacetherm aerogel insulation blanket bonded to 3mm Magnesium Board (MgO), for use in applications where improved thermal performance is required with limited space.Typically, a solid wall will have a U value of around 2.1 W/m2K. Following the application of Spacetherm WL, this can be reduced to around 0.8 W/m2K, dependent on the wall structure.

One Crown Place is the latest high rise addition to London’s skyline. Home to 246 luxury apartments, high-quality office space, a boutique hotel and members’ club, it is located between the City of London and Shoreditch. Designed by internationally renowned architects Kohn Pederson Fox (KPF), the development features two prismatic towers of 28 and 33 storeys.For the apartments, interior designers, Bowler James Brindley specified custom designed kitchens by Italian company Arclinea featuring a dark lacquered finish with engineered stone worktops and glass fronted cabinets.The Fire regulations which apply to high-rise living accommodation meant that the open plan kitchens in each apartment would require a fire suppression unit complete with sprinklers to be fitted. These units need to be installed and maintained by a specialist engineer and can also cause damage within a property should they be activated due to a fire.  Therefore, the team of architects, designers and builders were open to the idea of an alternative, unobtrusive design-led fire prevention solution, such as the Firechief Kitchen Stove Guard.

Surespan have recently completed the design and manufacturing of a large stainless steel hydraulic opening recessed floor door for a project in Sri-Lanka.The ProjectThe $850 million Waterfront integrated Resort (Cinnamon Life) is Sri Lanka’s largest and most iconic mixed development, located in the capital city of Colombo. Balmond Studio has designed and constructed the resort as a ‘city within a city’ offering two 5-star luxury hotels, offices, residences and premium retail and entertainment. They hope the resort will become one of the iconic and identifiable landmarks in Asia.The no-limits project is symbolic of Sri Lanka’s ambition, drive, and growth. The ProductSurespan were approached to manufacture the hatch to suit an opening of 6.5m by 4.1m and capable of withstanding a slow-moving wheel load of 10kN/m2. The pan-type door will be re-cessed for receiving 30mm of Natural Stone Slab infill with an approximate infill weight of 2 tonnes.Features The largest recessed floor hatch has been manufactured to provide a theoretical sound reduction of 45dB. To assist with installation, lifting points were designed to the frame exterior.

THE PROJECTAs part of it’s recent £100 million pound renovation, Roché Awnings were tasked with providing a shading solution which was in keeping with the hotels iconic features, whilst covering the width of their ground floor terrace. The terrace being the location for the hotel’s east smoking terrace, central loggia door entrance and private outdoor dining area.THE SOLUTIONThe challenge was to choose an awning which blended in with the style of the Edwardian building. Originally designed to incorporate the Markilux 730 drop arm awnings, we advised the hotel to choose the Markilux 3300 awnings due to it’s unique design. The awnings were mounted to the buildings stone facade and sit inconspicuously below the hotel’s balustrade. The helped the awning merge beautifully into the architecture of the building.Roché coupled Markilux 3300 full cassette patio awnings to achieve widths of close to 10 and 13 metres, along with a smaller width of close to 3 metres. The awning was installed green fabric, traffic white cassette and uniform awning projection. The positioning provided full protection for the open terrace area.

Britannia Leisure Centre is a new multi-sport community complex in Hackney. A key driver for the client was that the building should have a compact footprint. This was achieved by stacking the facilities, creating a rooftop MUGA with tennis courts and 5-a-side football pitches.Lang+Fulton supplied the external steel mesh panels which crown the building and provide panoramic views of London. These were made from their Terra-34 grating which features an anti-climb aperture. The tall slender panels were designed to continue the architectural theme of the building’s columns and vertical elements and were finished in a graphite grey ppc to compliment the neutral palette of stone, concrete and glass.In addition a grating screen was supplied to secure the upper levels of the stairway providing natural daylight and through visibility to the entrance atrium and cafe area.The steel grating also conformed to the requirement for material durability and low maintenance which were key specification considerations.The Britannia Leisure Centre has received multiple awards including Overall Building of the Year (New London Architecture).

An architectural marvel located in an area of the capital rich with history.In the centre of one of the most famous cities in the world and a stone’s throw away from the prestigious St Paul’s Cathedral – the commercial entrance matting at Newgate Street had to be as eye-catching as the location it sits in. We were specified early on for this project – working closely with SDS Matting who are familiar with our market-leading capabilities. For this design, incorporating the alternating narrow stone strips was a priority feature for the client – a challenge, but end results like this are always worth the effort.Two products, one Elite solutionThis creative execution called for a combination of two innovative products. For the revolving doors (where foot traffic is always heavily concentrated) INTRAflex XT with Elite fibre inserts was specified to deal with most of the dirt and moisture. As one of our most popular products, INTRAflex XT offers optimum durability, performance and aesthetics. For the strip style beyond the revolving doors, INTRAflex SP achieves the striking finished effect you can see in the photographs.The strips of INTRAflex SP are inset into the terrazzo tiles following the direction of travel. As most Entrance Matting Systems are set perpendicular to the direction of travel, this particular design was a great opportunity for SDS Matting to demonstrate their expertise. Laying the matting perfectly to line up with the entrance matting surrounding the revolving doors was one of the big success stories of this project.The INTRAlux Elite black fibre inserts used at Newgate Street contain a monofilament scraper element to remove dirt effectively and, in the classic black colourway, play into the colour scheme perfectly to complement the architect’s overall foyer design intent.Moving in a new directionQuality was a high priority for this project. As Entrance Matting specialists with a proven eye for design, we were specified early on by Buckley Gray Yeoman having worked closely with them before. The added element of laying the matting in the direction of travel called for a matting product that could be installed with ease. Of course, INTRA systems is the name that will always come to mind.The end result is Entrance Matting that truly adds to the visual identity of the building. This surreal manor house has been converted with the help of five bespoke Ridgeglaze rooflights from Glazing Vision, to provide a constant flow of natural daylight throughout this new renovation.This secluded manor house in Mawgan Porth near Newquay involved a combination of new-build and refurbishment to help create a special property with interlinked courtyards. Gardens and entertaining spaces that reconnected this house with its rural location.A property which had lost much of its character due to previous poor-quality extensions and renovations was in desperate need of an overhaul and some true care and attention to help provide the clients with a home they could cherish.CSA Architects were entrusted with this mammoth task and working closely with builders P Chapman Construction they have been able to capture the true identity of the property and its marvellous countryside surroundings.From the point of arrival, the driveway leads guests to a grand entrance hall, that seamlessly links the original house and the new buildings, whilst also connecting directly to the surrounding landscaped gardens.Renovating the original house to provide guest accommodation that is both cosy and functional, the extensions have created large open plan living and dining spaces, a sitting room, games room, and functional boot room.The use of 5 multi-part Ridgeglaze rooflights from Glazing Vision add an abundance of natural daylight throughout this new renovation.Providing the perfect addition to the apex roof line, allowing glazing on both returns, and in keeping with the juxtaposition of rustic and contemporary which is almost flaunted throughout the home.Given the history of the building, double glazed rooflights were used with a low e coating for maximum thermal performance. The low e coating on the glass allows most of the visible light to pass through as well as the short-wave heat energy but blocks long wave energy from passing through. This ensures the heat from inside the building is reflected, back into the room, and so heat losses are significantly reduced.Throughout the property, unique characters have been retained but with carefully selected improvements to emphasise the potential within the property. The rustic stone floor and extensive areas of Crittall-style glazing sit against the original stone wall of the house and form part of a rich palette of high-quality materials. The use of reclaimed wood cladding, brick walls and oak beams are brought together around an exposed steel structure that define the main living spaces.

The specification of Rocksilk® RainScreen Slab provided both performance and installation benefits to both client and specialist installing contractor.Rock Mineral Wool has a Euroclass A1 reaction to fire classification to BS EN ISO 13501- 1, the highest classification available. With rainscreen cladding incorporated into building design fire performance is particularly important and, as such, a non-combustible component such as Rock Mineral Wool provides the ideal prevention against the spread of fire. The non-combustible nature of rock mineral wool ensures that it will not burn, will not give off toxic smoke and will not suddenly ignite in a fire due to ‘flashover’.Another key specification element related to the speed and ease of installation. The required thermal performance of the building was dependent on the correct installation of the specified insulation product. Rocksilk® RainScreen Slabs are easy to install down to their superior workability ensuring installation stayed within the tight time constraints. Rocksilk® RainScreen Slab is treated with a water repellent additive to ensure the building structure is protected against rain penetration and it can also be installed with either face adjacent to the sub structure.Rocksilk® RainScreen Slab provides an additional benefit for the installing contractor as it is designed to adapt to minor imperfections in the building’s substructure. The rock mineral wool product ‘knits’ together, ensuring intimate contact between slabs ensuring all joints are closed and thermal efficiency is maximised.Rocksilk® RainScreen Slab has excellent acoustic properties, which contributed towards the acoustic performance of the structure in order to comply with both sound insulation and sound absorption requirements.What’s more, individual packs of Rocksilk® RainScreen Slabs are compression packed together in Knauf Insulation’s innovative packaging method, Supakube. The advanced compression technology and strong packaging materials ensure the product is easy to transport and store, reducing environmental impact and causing minimal disruption on site and the surrounding area.

As a mixed-use development, comprising 209 new homes overlooking a central square, lined with bars and restaurants, and an impressive double-height entrance foyer to the eight-screen Picturehouse Cinema, 'the biggest outside London’s West End,' it was vital that the chosen rainscreen could withstand numerous vying challenges. Each perimeter facade is designed in a subtly different language, depending on the character of the particular street it is facing. The architectural language changes towards the interior, where the contextual red brick and stone have been complemented with a more contemporary materials palette, including dark blue brick with contrasting green-glazed brick inserts and bronze-coloured cladding laser cut with a distinctive, three-dimensional geometric pattern.‘tp bennett are dedicated to ’creative reuse‘ as a practice – ’our ethos is to re-animate and adapt redundant historic buildings to reinforce a unique sense of place within each project. The Old Grammar School House in Shrewsbury is a Grade II listed historic building, which was formerly part of the school and has been converted to an office space.KEIM were approached by Randle Building Solutions, who had used KEIM Mineral Paints on a previous project in Edgmond, Shropshire. The conventional painted stonework was flaking and blistering due to excess moisture trapped within the substrate. The painted brickwork on the front of the building was in good condition.Bryan Roe of KEIM Mineral Paints recommended stripping the paint off the stonework and the brickwork at the back of the building, using KEIM STS 7M, that was holding damp and flaking. The gloss paint on the stone windows surrounds were to be stripped as much as possible and sanded down to create a key for the mineral paint to bond to.KEIM Contact-Plus was diluted with KEM Soldalit Fixativ to equalise surface textures and fill hairline cracks. KEIM Soldalit, in a bespoke grey colour (KS01 0312) that was matched back to the original paint colour, was applied to create a breathable, long-lasting finish.KEIM Soldalit is fire resistant and A2-s1, d0 classified. The sol-silicate properties mean that it can be applied over unpainted and previously painted surfaces without the need of a primer.

Breathing new life into a 16th century farmhouse in Redmarley, Gloucester, Durbridge House has undergone extensive renovation works. Bryan Roe of KEIM Mineral Paints, visited the property and found evidence of algae, and flaking paint. In order to provide a solid foundation on which to paint, a skim coat of KEIM Universal Render for the base of the exterior stonework was recommended, to consolidate the fried stone and create a bell shape for improved water shedding.The damp chimney stack on the north elevation was stripped back, using the DOFF system (a high temperature, low pressure method, which is least invasive for the brick facia), to release trapped water and left to dry for two weeks prior to re-decoration. Bryan recommended removing all loose material by wire brush, as well as stripping the chimney stack and base of the stonewall to the north elevation, as much as possible.To remove the red algae, 50:50 of bleach and water was advocated, in addition to KEIM Algicid for mould and algae growth. The KEIM Royalan system was recommended, due to its durability and breathability. It was applied to the newly skimmer render and will provide a long-lasting coating, as its highly resistant to fungal and algae growth, while also being resistant to airborne pollutants and acid rain.

Emrys Architects were appointed by Berners & Wells to design this mixed-use development located north of Oxford Street in central London. The building sits across 2 different streets, the lower two floors accommodate flexible retail and restaurant space and the upper floors high end office space.The building has been designed to respond to the historic Character of the local area, some areas were partially demolished while the Edwardian facade on Wells Street was retained, repaired and extended. Portland stone and teal glazed-brick detail was used to create seven two-storey high arches showcasing the grand entrances to the offices and retail units.The ironmongery brief centred around replicating the arches present in both the external entrances and the courtyard, this distinctive shape was also used in the vision panels on a number of internal doors. To fulfil this brief, we worked closely with the architect to design and manufacture bespoke arched push plates in Flat Matt Black(FMB). Where required these were paired with complimentary D-shaped pull handles and simple accessories finished to match. All other ironmongery was finished in FMB including hinges, door closers, signage and accessories.Photography: Neil Kenyon

Expanding Exeter College's 700-year-old campus in the heart of Oxford was a privilege given to Alison Brooks Architects: developing Cohen Quad, a hub for students including living accommodation for 90, an auditorium, seminar rooms, social learning spaces, an archive, a café, roof terraces, offices, and fellows' accommodation.Student rooms and fellows' studies are enclosed by patterned stainless steel that folds across wall and roof surfaces, sitting on a stone-clad 'base' that houses the quads' public spaces.The Rimex tiling in the checkerboard pattern really highlights the stunning dormer windows and the beautiful curve of the tiles from the roofline wrap around the roof and down the walls creating a seamless cloak around the building. 17,000 iridescent stainless steel shingles adorn this roof, and the tiles are of a wonderful muted bronze and champagne colour with an unusual texture - catching - but not reflecting the sunlight. "We were given excellent technical and sales support from Fixfast. All stainless steel fixings and shingle clips were supplied in a timely and efficient manner. The historic Bell Street Stables in Glasgow has recently undergone an extensive conversion, featuring the installation of Alumasc’s Flushjoint aluminium rainwater downpipe system.This magnificent period property has an interesting history. It was built between 1896-98 by A. W. Wheatley, originally to house horses working to pull the Glasgow City Council Cleansing Department’s refuse collection carts. In 1955, the building was redesigned to provide a separate entrance for the Police Department who shared the property with Cleansing until the 1980s. Situated in a prime position within the Merchant City area in the city centre of Glasgow, the building was converted to form 52 mid-market affordable rented flats by the Construction and Manufacturing Group (CCG) on behalf of Glasgow Housing Association (GHA) and Lowther Homes, during a two-year construction programme. The renovation was completed in 2019.A major requirement of the renovation was to conserve as much of the building’s heritage as possible, which included all exterior aspects. This involved the upgrade of the stone elevation, replacing all windows and making repairs to the roof and rainwater system.Flushjoint aluminium downpipes along with contemporary hopper heads were specified for their contemporary design. The installation was completed in a non-standard RAL colour to match and complement the window surrounds.

Penrhyn Heather Blue slates from Welsh Slate feature on Lincoln’s Inn’s Great Hall. One of London’s most unique buildings is enjoying a new lease of life, thanks to Welsh Slate. The Great Hall and Library Buildings of The Honourable Society of Lincoln’s Inn, an association of students, barristers and judges and one of the four Inns of Court, have over the past two years undergone an extensive programme of external conservation carried out by expert stone masons Capital Stone.  The programme of work includes replacement of the Great Hall’s slate roof covering. Work is still ongoing, with anticipated overall completion in April/May this year, but the work to the Great Hall roof is complete, as is the striking of the temporary roof covering which brings the new roof into view.  The Great Hall and Library Buildings were constructed from 1843 to 1845. The Great Hall roof was originally covered with lead but was recovered in 1868 with slate. From 1871 to 1873 the Library was extended eastwards by three bays. The building is an important example of 19th Century Gothic Revival architecture and has been listed Grade II* since 1951.  After 154 years, the slates on the roof of the Great Hall required replacing to protect the interior, including a striking fresco and beautifully worked oak. The slates were suffering from surface delamination and a large proportion had slipped due to nail rot, requiring tingles to hold them in place. The existing slates were found to originate from both the Ordovician and Cambrian deposits of North Wales – the former predominately on the eastern elevation and the latter on the western. The large Ordovician slates, typically 850mm long and between 350mm and 500mm wide (and laid to a fixed gauge of approximately 350mm which equates to a head lap of approximately 100mm), originated from what is now Welsh Slate’s Ffestiniog quarry, which is currently mothballed, while the other quarries producing these no longer operate. The Cambrian slates from the Llanberis region, as well as Bethesda where Welsh Slate’s main quarry is based, were even larger, at 850mm long and wider than 450mm, laid to the same gauge. Both slate types were fixed to timber battens on open timber rafters, with the underside torched with horsehair and lime plaster. These were replaced for the closest Welsh slate match – Welsh Slate’s County-grade Penrhyn Heather Blues, at 800mm long, widths of between 400mm and 550mm, and a 350mm gauge and 100mm head lap. These are guaranteed for 100 years, with a useful life of 150 years. While the roof is generally simple in form, with two large slopes, its substantial size at circa 800m2 meant the work took considerable time to complete. To allow for more than a dozen dormers the Welsh Slate had to be cut and fitted to size with double copper clout nails. The thickest slates were used on the eaves, diminishing towards the ridge to maintain the original visual finish. They were also holed from the rear to provide a slight countersink to the face. The Great Hall operates by day as a dining hall for members of the Inn, and by night, as a venue for dinners, receptions and weddings for up to 400 people. Set in 11 acres of beautiful grounds in Holborn, Central London, it is the closest Inn to the Royal Courts of Justice. Henry Skinner, Head of Projects and Facilities Management at The Honourable Society of Lincoln’s Inn, said: “The replacement of the roof covering was far from straightforward, despite its externally simplistic construction. During stripping of the existing roof covering, we had to deal with atmospheric lead contamination of a horsehair felt that sat between the original slates and close boarding, requiring controlled measures of removal and disposal.  “Furthermore, the close boarding had warped over time, causing an undulation between roof trusses that needed to be spaced out. This was achieved through the introduction of additional battens and packing timbers to create a level surface onto which the new slate could be laid.” Casey Wickers, trainee quantity surveyor with Capital Stone Renovation, said: “The main work of stripping the existing roof was extremely challenging and labour intensive, to not only remove, wash and handle each slate manually through a tight scaffolding design, but also doing so whilst wearing full RPE due to the lead contamination. “With the two stunning roof facades in full view, the quality of the Welsh slates can be seen by all.

Planning permission was granted for a new build two-storey detached dwelling, replacing the existing residential property constructed in the 1900s.A comprehensive set of architecture plans specified high quality elevations with a ‘classical’ Georgian-esque design. The sub-contractors, B-Bespoke Design & Build Ltd, required Keystone’s brick slip flat gauge headers above multi-pane sash windows and an intelligent bespoke interconnecting brick slip splayed bay system across two floors on the side elevation.ChallengeThe design and scale of the building, along with the arrangement of fenestration and opening detailing, required the careful skill and use of sympathetic materials to ensure the development enhanced the special character of properties in close vicinity.B-Bespoke Design & Build Ltd considered the volume of decorative window openings and availability of local skilled bricklayers when considering the most effective and efficient approach to the build schedule.SolutionAn offsite construction method was deployed by the sub-contractor. Keystone’s technical team were contacted to design brick slip flat gauge headers accommodating brick spans between 1135mm to 1472mm. Each with a 70-degree end skew, 375mm high face brick and 102mm soffit return whilst also incorporating keystone stone headers above specific windows. The prefabricated lintels improved the allocation of time and resources elsewhere on site allowing the build to be completed to a high interior specification still with an exterior full of character.The rigid symmetrical design and gracious classic proportions create a generous sense of space and natural light, with stunning traditional period features created above each window opening. The interconnecting brick slip splayed bay system spans 1695mm and provides a stark contrast to the boxy room profiles often seen with a Georgian home. This architectural feature accommodates the high ceilings and desired aesthetics whilst providing effective structural support to withstand roof and masonry loads above.A consignment of bricks was collected from site and each brick cut and bonded using a BBA approved construction adhesive to the load bearing lintels offsite. The patented perforated lintel design allows the adhesive to squeeze through the perforations and form a ‘mushroom’ on the inside, providing a mechanical lock between the steel lintel and the brick slips.Testimonial“For the new build Georgian styled home, we sourced over thirty bespoke prefabricated brick slip feature lintels from Keystone as well as a unique interconnecting feature brick splayed bay system.
