The Wickes Farnbrough DIY store is one in the latest Wickes stores to have been developed by Travis Perkins as part of its ongoing plan to double its UK store network to 400 by 2020.The project used Trimapanel® micro-rib 90mm on the front elevations and Trisomet® 80mm for the rear wall elevations; Trisomet® 120mm was used for the roof; and parapet gutters lined with a Colorcoat Aquatite® PVC membrane. (HR50) site assembled built-up system, which is being used as a feature on a number of the Wickes Stores, ran across the top of the Trimapanel® on the front elevation acting as a separator between the two units. LP1000 liner panels were also used internally.

A conversion project in Somerset has utilised a number of products from Catnic to provide practical and sustainable living accommodation, suitable for retirement. Coates Farm has employed Catnic's® Urban standing seam roofing and cladding system as well as Catnic lintels to ensure the environmental impact of the building is kept to a minimum.Situated in Kittisford, a small picturesque village near Wellington, Coates Farm is owned by Maurice and Penny Stanbury. “We decided, that due to our advancing years, we wanted a practical and sustainable home that would require very little maintenance,” said Maurice. “Having received go-ahead to repurpose an old cow shed, we wanted to ensure that the materials specified would contribute to the building’s eco credentials.”To ensure the work was allowable under permitted development, it was essential that the development was kept within the same building footprint. Working alongside architect Nigel Pearce at Pearce Practice for the planning and design of the conversion, the decision was made to specify Catnic's® Urban standing seam roofing and cladding system.A cost-effective alternative to traditional copper and zinc standing seam roof systems, the Urban system is manufactured to meet all relevant legislation, including load bearing for wind speed in accordance with EN 1991-4 and weather tightness in accordance with BS 5534 Parts 1 and 2. Furthermore, helping to meet requirements for sustainable building solutions – Urban is BRE Green Guide Rated ‘A’ and at end of life – the panels are 100% recyclable.“Maurice came to us with an idea that he wanted something different for the roof that would improve the eco footprint of the building whilst being aesthetically pleasing on the eye,” said Nigel Pearce.“Because of the permitted development, we were restricted by the low roof pitch. As we couldn’t specify slate or tiles, we remembered that we had used Catnic® Urban on a recent conversion and found it to be a great option; not only could it accommodate the low pitch at Coates Farm, but it also matched the contemporary look and feel that Maurice was looking for,” added Nigel.Initially to be specified for only the flat section of the roof, it was decided that Catnic® Urban would be utilised for the complete roof due to its crisp lines and strong aesthetics.Maurice Stanbury said, “During the initial specification, we were really happy with the service received from Catnic. Having decided upon Catnic® Urban, we began exploring the possibility of getting our lintels from them too. Alongside standard lintels, we required a bespoke corner lintel to ensure we could match the intended design of the building. We submitted technical drawings to Catnic and the technical team made the process very easy.”Whilst Maurice project managed the redevelopment, the installation was undertaken by Kevin and Ashley Drew – local builders known to the Stanbury’s. After specification, but prior to ordering Urban, it was decided that Maurice and Ashley would attend an Urban training day at Catnic’s training centre in Caerphilly, to learn how to correctly install the standing seam roofing system.During the course, Ashley and Maurice spoke with Catnic’s Technical Director Richard Price, who then visited the site personally to measure up and give guidance to apply what they had learnt in Caerphilly into practice.Throughout the conversion, Kevin and Ashley Drew worked closely with Catnic to guarantee the successful delivery of the project. Using Catnic’s Lintel Advanced Scheduling System (CLASS) ensured that they could adopt a ‘just in time’ approach to deliveries.“Having ordered both lintels and Urban from Catnic we were able to delay the delivery of the system until we were ready to install it,” said Kevin Drew.“We found the system incredibly easy to work with – particularly as this was our first experience of Urban - managing to install it quickly between the two of us,” added Kevin.“We are thrilled with the end result, and we now have the property we had always dreamed of having,” concluded Maurice Stanbury. “Catnic made the process incredibly easy from start to finish, and with Catnic® Urban we are safe in the knowledge that the system will now require minimal maintenance.”

The India Buildings is located on Water Street in the centre of Liverpool’s financial and business district. It was designed by architects Arnold Thornely and Herbert J Rowse, following a competition to design an office block which was judged by the great Sir Giles Gilbert Scott and built between 1924 and 1932 for the Blue Funnel shipping line owned by Alfred Holt.The building’s design is influenced by the Italian Renaissance style and it has several features of the American Beaux-Arts style, including for example the sculptures of cherubs above the windows.Having sustained damage during World War II the building was restored to its original state after the war under the supervision of Rowse, the original architect.In 2017, the Grade II* Listed Building was purchased by Legal & General and it was announced that HMRC would base a regional centre there. Renovation works commenced with the focus on creating modern, comfortable office space while retaining the heritage features of the building.Clement Windows Group was selected to manufacture and install the new double glazed steel windows which match the original single glazed metal windows and improve thermal performance and energy use within the historic building. Almost 1,000 windows from the Clement MW40 range were specified, polyester powder painted in RAL 9016 (White).Alex Harrison of architects Falconer Chester Hall said: “We had the pleasure of working with Clement on the steel window replacements of the India Building refurbishment project. Their performance in every aspect of the work was outstanding, and we wholeheartedly endorse them for any future contracts of a similar nature. One specific area where Clement excelled during the early stages, was the support we received from them during our discussions with the city planners regarding the bespoke windows. Their contribution proved very useful in moving matters forward and the end result is exceptional.“

Project details Charles de Gaulle International Airport is the second largest airport in Europe after London Heathrow. It is located just outside Paris and handles over 50 million passengers every year. For this reason it can be difficult to find the time for maintenance and repairs. "The airports floors have to withstand constant heavy traffic from passengers, staff and maintenance workers. It was therefore important that their repair and paint products were quick to apply, cure and hard wearing." The work that needed to be carried out was at the entrance to Terminal 3 which is the main public transport hub for Charles de Gaulle. For this reason the work needed to be carried out and finished between the hours of 9.30pm and 6.30am. After this time heavy traffic would resume. Our solution The first job was to clean the concrete floor slabs with Watco Concroff to remove all surface contaminants including oil and fats. Watco Concroff contains no solvents or other chemicals that are dangerous for the environment and penetrates even the thickest deposits of grease. The floor was then primed with Tack Coat, an epoxy resin adhesive primer which guarantees excellent grip on the key surface. As Charles de Gaulle is subjected to such heavy constant traffic a standard mortar would not be sufficient to withstand this, for this reason they choose Watco Concrex® Carbon Fibre. As it is as strong as granite it could be smoothed to a thickness of only 3mm, making the surface both waterproof and slip resistant. The Concrex® was subsequently painted with Safety Coat. Safety Coat is roller applied and contains fine, traction enhancing particles embedded in an epoxy resin coating so this coating was ideal for providing a non slip surface for added security.

Heslington East Campus Student Residences: Sustainable and Efficient Expansion Alongside the preservation of listed buildings, the University of York is investing in a flagship £130m development for students that promotes wellbeing, community, and sustainability. The initial phase sees 16 brand new student accommodation blocks and 2 communal hub buildings providing flexible social spaces. Surrounded by stunning lake views and natural habitats, the buildings are part of a huge initiative to expand the student accommodation offering.GOALSArchitects Sheppard Robson alongside Graham Construction sought to futureproof accommodation by incorporating multi-use buildings, including catering outlets and social hubs. Key to the brief was using the latest in safety, energy efficiency, longevity, and warranty credentials. Graham Construction’s use of modular external sandwich panels, prefabricated steel bathroom pods, and pre-assembled services distribution racks used Modern Methods of Construction with off-site construction techniques.CHALLENGESThe major challenge was to specify a roofing system that could keep up with the pace of the build, given the typical building was constructed from start to finish in circa 14 weeks.The roof deck comprised of precast concrete slabs which facilitated the works programme for speed of construction and consistency in build quality.Alumasc’s challenge was to find not only a waterproofing solution that was able to keep up with such speed of construction but also to meet a truly sustainable life cycle equalling the lifetime of the building.A key consideration in the design was the roofing materials’ thermal properties. To meet the u-value target of 0.15, Alumasc’s XPS Plus insulation was specified, providing a single layer of 175mm, which reduced the height of the overall build-up when compared traditional XPS.SOLUTIONHydrotech 6125 Waterproofing System / Derbigum Hybrid Upstands For over half a century Hydrotech Monolithic Membrane has been successfully used by architects and specifiers, ensuring some of the world’s most prestigious buildings and structures are kept watertight. With no product failures in over 50 years and guaranteed waterproofing integrity for the lifetime of the structure, Hydrotech offers a total life cycle solution for the building.Hydrotech was specified on the main roof areas for this project as it easily meets individual requirements of the buildings. In addition, the system is designed to last the lifetime of the building or structure to which it is applied, giving long-term waterproofing integrity and no future replacement costs.Applied in a hot liquid state to the deck, and including a polyester reinforcement, the bond of Hydrotech MM6125 is 100% absolute. There is no risk of water tracking below the membrane and because it is monolithic, no possibility of lap failure.DERBIGUM WATERPROOFINGDerbigum sustainable roof system was selected for the upstand areas. This hybrid solution was developed to improve the thermal efficiency in all areas to mitigate against cold-bridging with minimal insulant thickness. Derbigum bituminous membranes are high-performance waterproofing systems offering extended warranties and the highest levels of project support. The upstand zones benefited from Derbigum Mineral which is a mineral surfaced composite reinforced membrane.ROOFTOP MANAGEMENT STRATEGYIn addition to the waterproofing solution the buildings benefit from the full Alumasc rooftop management service. This included the design and supply of safety systems, accessories, and over 20 AOV smoke hatches meeting all British and European standards.Specific safe zones were designed by Alumasc Roof-Pro and positioned around all roofs for safe access. Purpose made clips for installing lightning conductor tape without roof penetration were also provided. Clement steel windows were chosen for the refurbishment of this double-fronted office building set within a busy part of the City of London near Smithfield Market. Surrounded by narrow cobbled streets it is situated on the boundary of the Smithfield Conservation Area.Blenheim House Construction (BHC) selected windows from the Clement EB24 range because they best suited the original look of the building and allowed for the maximum amount of light to flow throughout the property. Natural light was an important aim of this high specification refurbishment - central to the building is a mezzanine which creates a dramatic light-filled double height space.The windows are polyester powder coated in matt RAL 9005 (Jet Black) to match the frames as a finishing touch.Matthew Brown, Project Manager at BHC, commented:“We found Clement’s management team to be attentive, promptly addressing queries when raised and offering solutions and advice when called upon. This resulted in the windows being installed in a safe manner as per our agreed programme, and perhaps just as importantly, the client being pleased with the look of the end product.”Photography: CGS Photographers Ltd

A 19th century Listed Building, St Paul’s Church, has a prominent position at the top of St John’s Hill in Battersea. Current owners, The James Laurence Group, worked alongside the London Borough of Wandsworth Planning Department to agree how best this historical building should be restored and provided with a new lease of life. Clement were chosen to supply all the steel windows and conservation rooflights. The bespoke demands of the project required Clement to use two steel window ranges. Both W20 and EB24 were fitted to create the beautiful shaped windows which include club heads.

Reigate and Banstead Council therefore called upon contractor Vinci Construction to undertake the waterproofing works, utilising Sika’s solution provided through subcontractor Oliver Connell & Son Ltd

These included brackets that could take vertical shear loads of 72 kN, horizontal shear of 270 kN, tension of 495 kN and a moment of 25 kNm. BEAMCON was used to fix the innovative ETFE cladding “cushions” which give The SSE Hydro its distinctive appearance.

ASF were asked to manufacture tree grilles in the design of the ASF 3000 in stainless steel, but with structural design and calculation attached that met an 8 ton point loading, so that the grilles would be suitable for drive over by 15t+ street cleaners. ASF worked with site and our own structural engineers to produce grilles that met and exceeded the required standards.The top 'face' of the grille bars were also castellated to increase grip on the surface of the grilles.The grilles also hosted large uplighters that also allowed for an 8t point loadingThe grilles were manufactured in grade 316 stainless steel to these standards and finished passivate dipped, offering a stable finished patina that will last for many yearsThe grilles were manufactured to these standards

In keeping with the concept of sourcing natural materials, a Roma-3 mild steel grating fence in a galvanized finish was specified for the boundary demarcation.

A requirement in Corstorphine Wright’s design brief was to avoid horizontal movement joints in the finished façade, which would have been the result had a traditional SFS Infill to concrete frame approach been taken. Working with Willmott Dixon at the early design stages of the contract, Metsec’s in-house design team proposed a continuous walling solution formed from SFS to support glazing and rendered elements that would form the external skin of the façade. Metsec’s solution included the use of fixing cleats to connect the SFS continuous walling to the structure’s concrete frame.

Built using 9,000m2 of and insulated panels manufactured using and the front elevation features decorative cornice detail to the top right and top left hand corners of the building, in an agreed contrasting combination of blue colours (Solent Blue, Atlantis, Aquarius, Zeus and Sirius and Goosewing Grey).Adjacent to Rugby Mill, Ram Mill can accommodate up to 100,000 sq ft of occupiable space and has been pre-let. Built to the same design and using our and insulated panels, the front façade for this unit features our insulated panels in a different colour combination and features a decorative cornice detail that wraps around the top corners of the front elevation either side, in a green combination to reflect Pin Property’s distinctive brand (Heritage, Jade, Juniper, Sirius, Zeus and Goosewing Grey).

The terrace areas behind the pitch-perimeter was built up to 200mm to create a raised terrace specially designed for wheelchair users. Buzon pedestals are adjustable from 11 to 1120mm and thanks to their intrinsic strength and reinforced structure are recommended for use with heavier floor coverings such as large format concrete pavers and high live loads.

Lang+Fulton were asked to supply louvred screening to provide shelter and a visual barrier for the café and outdoor pool areas at the Portavadie Marina Resort. A 2.5m high screen of Italia-100 panels was installed to provide 100% visual screening. The louvres have a free area of 29%, which helps to reduce wind loading, but, in order to cope with potential storm force conditions, the RHS posts were specially designed in accordance with BS EN 1991-1-4. A store area for bins and a secure compound for service plant fored an additional part of the contract. The steel louvres were polyester powder coated in a muted grey (RAL 7015) to a marine grade standard of finish to blend with the surroundings and withstand the harsh coastal climate.

Clement Windows Group have replaced the original steel fenestration at the Old Marylebone Town Hall, recently leased by the London Business School from Westminster Council on a 35 year renewable contract. In order to increase teaching facilities by 70 percent, the building has undergone a major £60m refurbishment and Wates Construction were chosen as the Main Contractors to undertake the challenge of joining the two iconic buildings in an eclectic mix of the traditional and contemporary. The new building, designed by architects Sheppard Robson, is named the Sammy Ofer Centre in honour of the late Sammy Ofer KBE.

The extension has been covered with STEREO-KINETIC cladding; hundreds of freely-moving stainless steel sheets suspended from grating panels. Gusts of wind, traffic, even people walking by cause the metal rectangles to ripple in an ever-changing display. The kinetic artwork has been designed in such a way as to allow the passage of natural daylight through the underlying window openings on the second floor level.

Made-to-measure brushed satin stainless steel sinks and worktops, from GEC Anderson, have been installed in the breathing apparatus rooms, kit cleaning rooms and kitchens of the new Winchester Fire Station.The station relocated from its home of 74 years at North Walls to its new state-of-art facility inEaston Lane, Winnall,Winchester. The new five-bay fire station is operationally and strategically located on the outskirts of the city on a major access route, close to the M3. The new facility can accommodate 70-plus personnel and provides a continuously crewed facility as opposed to the previous just day-crewed arrangement, thus providing faster emergency cover over a greater area.Freestanding worktops, totalling more than 10 metres, were installed in the breathing apparatus (BA) room and kit cleaning area of the fire station. Industrial sized sinks were included to provide an effective washing facility for the fire crews specialist equipment. Sarah Collins, architect for Hampshire County Councils Property Services Department said, The specialised sinks were chosen for their ability to cope with an environment of high usage. We wanted a material that was robust enough to take the everyday knocks and last for the lifetime of the building. GEC Anderson sinks certainly met this requirement and are performing extremely well.

This was not actually a quayside application, instead the quayside profile was chosen as the curved profile doesn't create a 'natural ladder' and better discourages people climbing over from a pedestrian area into traffic.The curved profile was set up to have 2 solid rails and 4 tension cables which were used to bridge the gaps between the main rails equidistantly.Laser profiled steel posts with knuckles for rails and flanges to host the cables were manufactured as bespoke solutions. The outcome is a successful balance between a utilitarian piece of street furniture and a product with a decent amount of design and architectural integrity.

The owners of this four storey, semi-detached, Victorian home have totally transformed it to create a wonderful, contemporary space, full of character, colour and texture.The works undertaken included the demolition of the existing lower ground conservatory and the construction of a full width rear extension. The new space provides a large kitchen, dining and sitting area, but also retains the connection to the front snug. A two storey extension was formed along the side return, providing a boot room and utility space on the lower ground level and a cloakroom and WC on the upper ground level. A bespoke, black steel door screen from the Clement EB24 range was designed to form a glazed elevation facing onto the raised garden from the kitchen. The feature doors, along with other elements, such as the wide oak timber flooring, Bauwerk painted walls and a specialist kitchen provided by Daulby and Tickle, have created an incredible result.The Architect, Daniel Harris said “We’ve worked with Clement Windows on several residential projects, this one being the most complex. The process from initial sketch design through to installation was excellent. Clement produced highly detailed drawings and were very responsive throughout the development of the design. The installation team worked in close collaboration with the Contractor and ensured all elements of the openings were prepared and ready for installation. The end result was an extremely high quality and complex product installed with very low tolerances to an impeccable standard.”Photograph: GG Archard

It was a pleasure for all involved to work on this outstanding project, an original Arts and Crafts home which has been impeccably refurbished.The recent works included extending the house, as well as opening up and changing the layout. The interior has been modernised with a contemporary touch, but cleverly retains and enhances the home’s character. The interior design of the whole home is stunning. The bedrooms and bathrooms have been individually designed and are unique to their user. Mural wallpapers, vibrant pops of colour and striking, high quality fixtures and fittings help achieve this.A combination of leaded EB20 steel windows and W40 steel doors with genuine T bars were chosen to replace the external fenestration. The new windows and doors have slim, elegant frames but bring the benefit of improved thermal efficiency and security. Internally, a bespoke W20 door screen has been used to divide the kitchen and dining area.Both the client and architect are delighted with the outcome. Steven Harp from Harp and Harp said: “This project involved a delicate balance of modernising a home that had been barely touched in a century for 21st Century family life whilst trying to retain the beautiful Arts and Crafts character and charm of the original house. The new doors and windows by Clement were a perfect product to fulfil this brief, providing modern standards or thermal comfort with an aesthetic and quality that blended seamlessly with the elegance of the original metal windows that were still on the house.”The client said: “I was initially unsure about changing the fenestration and doors in our property, as they are such an important part of the building’s character, history and aesthetics. However, from our first meeting with Clement Windows, who were recommended by our building surveyor, I knew I needn’t have worried. They talked us through the different options in detail, provided extensive designs (and were always prepared to amend and refine these subject to our thoughts!) and also worked seamlessly with our architects to ensure that all we asked for was delivered and more. The finished product far exceeds any expectations that we had for windows and doors that matched our original steel windows and doors, now giving us the perfect look for the house with the added bonus of double glazing and additional safety and security. Their communication throughout has been excellent and we have felt looked after every step of the way. Installation was done ahead of schedule and the only issue we’ve had post installation has been dealt with efficiently and they have always had someone available to pick up the phone to us and come to site when needed. The early 20th century saw the development of a distinct architectural movement often termed ‘Stripped Classicism’. Running in tandem with the Modernist Movement of the Bauhaus School, the movement strove for bold massings, severe angles and a stylised reduction of classical elements. This style was frequently chosen by governments when designing official buildings.Perhaps the best known example of this type of architecture in the UK is the Grade II Listed Waltham Forest Town Hall, the headquarters of the London Borough of Waltham Forest Town Council. Designed by architect Philip Hepworth, construction of the building began in 1938 but was interrupted by the Second World War and so not completed until 1942. In 2019 the council approved an extensive programme of renovation works to the Town Hall which included the replacement of all the original steel windows. Clement W20 steel windows were chosen as the right product for their quality. The new white windows include both top hung and side hung opening casements with complementary fittings in a dark bronze finish.Senior Project Manager at Waltham Forest Town Hall John Cattermole said:“The team at Clement provided a great service in supplying new windows as part of the Town Hall refurbishment. Very specific aesthetic and energy performance criteria needed to be met when it came to the window replacement. The W20 windows supplied by Clement were able to meet all of these requirements.  Despite the project being on site at the height of the pandemic, the windows were delivered to programme which enabled seamless installation. Now the building has been brought back into use really positive feedback has been received from both staff and visitors.”

In addition, it will improve access, decrease crowding and generally deliver a modern public transport facility with better ambience.Whilst the BSCU scheme as a whole incorporated a wide range of elements – new entrance, three ticket halls, six lifts, 10 platforms, two 94m travelators and a 570m tunnel & platform for Northern Line – Sika’s involvement was on the whole block site.
