Gulson Road, Coventry

Knauf Insulation Ltd

Gulson Road is a new state of the art student accommodation block in the heart of Coventry’s university district. With 462 rooms, shared study areas, a common room, gym and staff management suite all set over eight storeys, fire safety was of the utmost importance. With this in mind, the architect, Stride Treglown, specified that Rock Mineral Wool should be used to insulate the rainscreen façade to comply with building regulations, which ban the use of combustible materials on all buildings over 18m tall.Knauf Insulation’s Technical Support Team undertook 3D U-value calculations on behalf of main contractors Robertson Construction and recommended 150mm Rocksilk® RainScreen Slab to achieve a U-value of 0.18W/m2K.Rocksilk® RainScreen Slab has a thermal conductivity of just 0.034W/mK. It is non-combustible with the best possible Euroclass A1 Reaction to Fire Classification rating, so will not contribute to the development or spread of fire should it occur. It is BBA certified for use in high rise buildings and the broadest range of build-ups of any rainscreen solution on the market. As well as exceptional thermal performance and fire safety, Rocksilk® RainScreen Slab provides high levels of sound absorption.Rocksilk® RainScreen Slab is easy to install correctly. The slabs interlock and adapt to minor imperfections in the substrate eliminating air leakage, which can reduce thermal and acoustic performance. It is also robust and durable with a water repellent additive to preserve its integrity while exposed during construction.Rocksilk® RainScreen Slab is manufactured with ECOSE® Technology, Knauf Insulation’s unique bio-based binder that contains no added formaldehyde or phenol. It is made from natural raw materials that are rapidly renewable, and is 70% less energy-intensive to manufacture than traditional binders, so it is more environmentally-friendly.Products made with ECOSE® Technology generate low levels of dust and VOCs (volatile organic compounds) and have been awarded the Eurofins (Gold) certificate for Indoor Air Comfort. Thanks to the enhanced thermal and acoustic performance from Knauf Insulation’s Rocksilk® RainScreen Slab, students at Gulson Road will enjoy warm, quiet, safe and sustainable flats to study, socialise and sleep in.

UltraCrete repairs troublesome chamber on busy London road

Instarmac Group plc

Road users in Kensington Church Street in Bayswater, are now enjoying a peaceful commute after Openreach and Centercomms Ltd replaced a long-standing failed access cover using UltraCrete’s market-leading access cover reinstatement materials.BackgroundClient Openreach, and contractors Centercomms Ltd, were once again required to repair a failed ironwork chamber on a busy central London street – the longest standing failed unit on their work stack. The ChallengeThe troublesome unit was located on Kensington Church Street in Bayswater – an extremely difficult and busy area in Central London. Working in London can be challenging as traffic management permits can be difficult to obtain and, due to heavy traffic, all work must be completed within 9.30am – 3.30pm.As well as a tight turnaround, upon arrival it became clear very quickly that chamber was damaged and the brickwork needed to be excavated. The SolutionWith this in mind, contractors Centercomms Ltd, working for, and on behalf of, Telent, chose to use UltraCrete’s market-leading maintenance solutions to replace the failed unit. UltraCrete has a reputation of providing the industry with expert and approved materials that reach required compressive strengths very quickly, helping operatives to complete installations before the 3.30pm deadline. To begin, the damaged brickwork was removed and timber shuttering installed using UltraCrete QC10 F. This fast, strong and easy to use flowable concrete provides an extremely robust repair in just 20 minutes.Using the SG Pam Install Plus frame installation system, Centercomms Ltd carefully placed the frame and used a string line to ensure it was level with the existing road surface.Once in position, Envirobed® CD534 Red high performance bedding mortar was applied to the inner face and chamber top and the timber shuttering was then placed 50mm beyond the flange. After Envirobed® CD534 Red had fully cured, Envirobed® CD534 Flowable Red was mixed and poured to fully bed and encapsulate the frame to a minimum depth of 35mm.To complete the installation, operatives returned the lid into position, applied SCJ seal and tack coat spray to the vertical edges of the existing road surface and frame ahead of the asphalt reinstatement.ResultsThe entire installation took just two and a quarter hours to complete, much to the delight of the client, contractors and road users.

Porous asphalt adopted road for new housing development

Tarmac

This exclusive up-market housing development in rural Somerset, required surfacing for what would become an adopted residential road. Planning requirements specified that a sustainable form of drainage would be needed to gain planning consent. ULTIPOROUS, Tarmac’s durable porous asphalt was recommended. It would allow full infiltration of rainwater to eliminate puddles and standing water even after heavy rain. It would also achieve a safe, all-weather surface for residents and avoid surface run-off into the local catchment. The approach taken, meant that no drains or manholes were required, which is another advantage of using this product for architects and designers. It would also deliver lasting durability, helping to minimise future maintenance requirements.

Velfac Windows

Sector:     EducationArchitect:  Innes Associates Specified for: ·      Sustainable construction·      Inner timber frame ·      Durable external aluminium·      Design versatility·      Competitive pricingDesigned by architects Innes Associates, the latest addition to Cromer Road Primary School is a distinctive, L-shaped red-brick classroom building which wraps around a newly landscaped play space. VELFAC slim-framed windows and doors are a key feature of every facade, with dark grey external frames emphasising the pattern of shadows created by textured brickwork and inset window apertures. The VELFAC system has also helped architect Corrie Rounding meet challenging regulatory and sustainability targets while maximising usable space, increasing natural light and improving ventilation. ‘We pushed the contractor to specify VELFAC as we knew the composite frame was the right fit for the Cromer Road project,’ says Corrie. ‘The sustainability of the VELFAC system, and its low energy performance, met Department of Education requirements, while the robust external aluminium frame is ideal for a busy school environment. The design of the windows and doors also met our aesthetic brief, especially the inner timber frames. These are clear lacquered to emphasise the wood, provide a link with the trees surrounding the new building, and to deliver a less ‘sterile’ finish than aluminium or uPVC.’The VELFAC system could also meet key ventilation, daylighting and budget targets: ‘To manage costs, and maximise daylight in the right places, we concentrated our glazing allowance at the areas of most activity,’ explains Corrie, ‘but we also used windows to maximise the usability of the interior. For example, we used tall slim VELFAC units to illuminate the staircase but placed larger windows directly under the stairs to create an additional and useful breakout space.’The Cromer Road building is naturally ventilated, unusual for a Department for Education funded primary school project, with VELFAC units carefully configured to support an efficient flow of fresh air: ‘We wanted to make sure the building could stay comfortable without the need for mechanical cooling, even through the hottest summer,’ says Corrie. ‘This meant the placement of smaller windows on south facing facades, to manage solar gain, and the specification of multiple opening units across the building, including high level teleflex-operated lights. These are especially important in the classroom window screens where ventilation is guided by CO2 monitors.’ To ensure the security of children and staff, all windows also feature restrictors, with finger guards fitted to doors as an additional safety measure.Corrie was also pleased with the support provided by the VELFAC team, especially in the early stages: ‘VELFAC provided the estimates and performance data we needed to convince the contractor that VELFAC was the ideal solution for this project,’ she says, ‘and the school was certainly very happy with the end result’.

AKRI retaining planters drive biodiversity at Ferntower Road, London

Furnitubes International Ltd

Located in the historic district of Islington in North London, Ferntower Road is close to the popular green space, Newington Green. A dull and empty public space lies at the end of the road, nestled between local shops and cafes that passersby wander through.Islington Council wanted to improve the quality of air on streets and neighbourhoods, by introducing a green corridor which would make the space more inviting and encourage the locals to sit and relax.Working with local Landscape Architects, the plan was to help improve the public space by taking an inclusive approach. By using our AKRI 600 retaining planters, large scale planting beds were designed as part of a scheme, driving biodiversity and reducing air pollution in the area.A total of four AKRI planter shapes were crafted and manufactured in corten (a naturally corrosion resistant material). The AKRI system includes a timber seating module with cladding (which complements the AKRI unit) that was added to further bring people closer to nature. In the community, the planters and seating are well received as a new addition to the once unused public space.

Cedral Click - Graham Road, Sheffield

Cedral

An architect-designed 1970s house in South Yorkshire was given a modern makeover using Cedral Click in Slate Grey.Roger Mills and his family moved into their 5-bedroom bungalow in 1988.“We were very happy with it, apart from its external appearance which was becoming very dated and dilapidated,” says Roger. They considered replacing the exterior cladding with a similar type of tile but worried that vertical tiling wouldn’t give them the quality, contemporary look they wanted. Fortunately, their nephew had just replaced his cladding with Cedral facades and the Mills family, impressed with the results, realised this was just what they were looking for.The fact the building was in the Ranmoor Conservation area could have posed a problem and initially the Mills’ faced some challenges from the local authority planning office. Fortunately, as Cedral facades have been used successfully in other conservation areas, the project was passed.Smooth-finish Cedral Click in contemporary Slate Grey gave the tired looking house a new lease of life – “people now mistake it for a new build,” says Roger. He’s also made his neighbours very happy. “They’re delighted because it has considerably improved the appearance of the house and that helps to lift the class of the houses on the road.”The return on investment has been substantial. In fact, the renovation has actually increased the value of the house by more than the cost, reveals Roger. And installing insulation under the Cedral boards will reduce the family’s energy spend, he confirms.“The project was a big success and I would definitely recommend Cedral to anybody experiencing the same issues we did. The material is very high quality, and the house looks significantly more attractive and modern.” Roger also recommends using one of Cedral’s recognised installers for the job. “This is a product that benefits from having an expert who is familiar with the fitting requirements to fit it.”

Höllentalanger Hut

Höllentalanger Hut

Schöck Ltd

The Höllentalanger, at 1387m, short of halfway during the initial ascent from Germany's highest mountain, the Zugspitze, is a 'hut' millions of climbers have found shelter since 1893. Despite modernisation over the years however, the building had to be closed in autumn 2013.A replacement building was needed – and quickly too. Stephan Zehl, an architect from Munich, won the tender with his three-level, stepped building design. It has pent roof borders, which protects against avalanche risk from the eastern side; and meets all necessary current standards in providing dining facilities, equipment rooms, drying and shoe rooms and comfortable accommodation to sleep 100 people.During autumn and winter, all paths to the Höllentalanger are closed-off, as the Alpine climate makes it impossible to work for eight months of the year. Even in good weather, there are only walking tracks to the Höllentalanger, with no road access at all – so everything had to be flown in by helicopter. Rapid assembly and efficient transport costs were therefore critical to the budget and a combination of timber and pre-cast element walls were the chosen method of construction. Core-insulated prefabricated element walls were supplied for the ground level building. Due to the extreme temperature fluctuations, the concrete is subjected to pretty extreme expansion and contraction conditions. To counter this and to combat thermal bridging, it was important to install Schöck Thermoankers.

Hackwood Road Bridge M3

Hackwood Road Bridge M3

Fosroc International Limited

THE PROJECTThe M3 Hackwood Road Bridge is located near Basingstoke on the M3 motorway. It required extensive concrete repair over large areas, due to water ingress causing the corrosion of the steel reinforcement through carbonation and chloride attack. The repairs were undertaken as part of the Scheme Delivery Framework (SDF) for National Highways. Continuity and half-cell tests carried out revealed weak areas within the bridge’s rebar.THE SOLUTIONSacrificial anodes were installed to the perimeter of all repair areas prior to Renderoc DS being used to spray back replacement material. Renderoc was selected as the best product solution due to its low rebound performance, which is well-known and tested in the market, having been used in many similar applications. Renderoc DS is fully compatible with all anode systems due to its low resistivity. This is true for a majority of the Renderoc range, meaning it can be use alongside cathodic protection. Renderoc HB45 hand applied mortar was also used where access was limited. Each phase of the repairs lasted approximately 2 weeks, involving breakout, continuity tests, anode installation, area preparation, spraying, and a 3 day curing period before moving onto the next section.THE BENEFITSThe corrosion and potential spalling of the existing concrete meant that there was a risk to health and safety of the bridge. If left unrepaired this could have also affected the capacity of the asset on a major UK motorway. The application process for each section of the repairs was significantly faster due to the spray application method and ensured a comprehensive restoration of the entire structure. Volker Laser completed all works on time and to program.

The Safety Letterbox Company

THE PROJECTThe architects of Camden Courtyards, Sheppard Robson, are long established locals. Their aim was to create a building that reflects Camden’s attitude, so they drew from the area’s eclectic Victorian and Georgian architectural roots to create something fresh and contemporary.Camden Town is internationally renowned as one of the most dynamic places in London. Famed for its alternative fashion, acclaimed music scene and the well-known Camden Market. On the Barratt Developments – Camden Road development, the needs of the occupier have been carefully considered throughout for the private occupiers and the residents of Newlon Housing Trust; from a communal roof terrace offering views over London, a tranquil courtyard and 12 hour concierge service through to a significant feature on this project; the provision of Parcel boxes. The considerable growth and convenience of online shopping has resulted in the consideration of not just mail but parcel delivery, particularly in projects where the occupier is likely to work and have the inconvenience of missing deliveries.Chosen in RAL Gentian Blue with vinyl numbering to identify the apartment allocation, this simple manual parcel box solution installed by Barratt Developments have provided a simple receptacle for parcels, recessed into the walls making a fantastically inspired use of space, ensuring this development is future proofed and provides commitment to the modern growing requirements of millennials.Affordable, easy to install and highly effective for the residents, these parcel boxes form just one part of our fully comprehensive parcel box range of solutions we offer from manual systems through to fully SMART intelligent systems.THE PRODUCTThe MEFA Hazel is a minimalist parcel box with loading chute used to store both mail and parcel deliveries at the same time. Soundis Acoustic Matting / Underlay at Apartments, Cowley Road, Brixton, London

Soundis

Cowley Road in Brixton is situated in a vibrant area of London where main contractors, Pinnacle Building Solutions were faced with the task of refurbishing an existing apartment block to a standard that reflected the higher standards of living now demanded in the area.Pinnacle Building Solutions were tasked with reducing not just airborne noise, but impact noise too. This is a classic problem in buildings constructed when building regulations were considerably more lax than today. This problem is compounded by modern tastes having moved away from carpets throughout the living space. Finally, the tight urban site demanded that all trades work together to an equally tight schedule of works.Soundis supplied over 2,850m2 of Acoustic Matting and Underlays. The end result being an installation that surpassed the building regulations Part E for both airborne and impact noise with ease.

Zonal Entrance Mat Design at 338 Euston Road

Zonal Entrance Mat Design at 338 Euston Road

INTRAsystems

With all-glass revolving doors and vast glazing panels, the INTRAform DM entrance matting at 338 Euston Road appears to flow seamlessly from inside to out. Encompassing the angled and recessed doorway, the external matwell continues the line of the interior mat to square. This interesting combination of internal and external matting creates a highly practical design feature. Zonal entrance matting system Using INTRAform DM with differing inserts in the internal and external zones, the architect has created a two-stage zonal system. In zone 1 external, the matting is inset with multidirectional rubber which scrapes away excess dirt and moisture from footwear and wheels. With the entrance on the corner of the building, the flexible rubber fins ensure performance, whichever the direction of approach. In the primary mat, (zone 2, internal), the profiles are inset with highly absorbent INTRAlux Elite polyamide fibre. These inserts remove and retain any remaining dirt and moisture to ensure a safe and slip-free entrance. With the revolving door sheltered within the recess, the matting here is also inset with fibre. Made from 100% Econyl regenerated nylon fibre and capable of absorbing 5.4l/m2, INTRAlux Elite is both a practical and sustainable choice. Minimal design, maximum impact The INTRAlux Elite fibre in Grey 606 matches tonally with the multidirectional rubber. The oversized entrance matting panels lessen the use of diving t-bars. While the positioning of the t-bars has been carefully planned to align with the threshold. Along with the glazed façade, these elements help maximise the impact of the architect’s design, to create a stunning entrance. Make an Impact With Office Entrance Matting AXIS House, office design and fit-out company, is in the business of Shaping Futures and with this project, they revolutionised the past by transforming a dull, industrial, 1950s warehouse unit in Dorset into a modern masterpiece of functional office space with inspiring showrooms. The matting brief was to create an entrance with an unexpected wow factor, marrying design, performance and sustainability. The team wanted to create a lasting first impression for visitors coming in from the drab industrial surroundings outside, to enter a modern building filled with possibilities.Create a Dramatic TransitionEntrance Matting fills the entire lobby. But it’s not your average Entrance Mat. The enclosed space offers a dark, dramatic transition area with one of our more exclusive products INTRAshape and using the higly moisture-absorbent Ultimate fibre. This delivers a luxurious, carpet-like impression as visitors pass through into the double-height, open plan office beyond. A space filled with light, plants, and natural materials.AXIS House chose INTRAshape in a small rectangular form and brickwork pattern for the mat well. Ultimate fibre inserts in Anthracite (907) fill the matwell, which is four metres long. The overall effect is thick and luxurious, more like plush carpet than Entrance Matting and absorbs everything the British Weather throws at it too!Wow, Wow, Wow; Design, Sustainability, and PerformanceAs our sister company, AXIS House naturally looked to INTRAsystems for their Entrance Matting! The team hadn’t worked with Agata, the Interior Designer before, but she was “impressed with the choice of colours and designs” and “thrilled with the project.” We helped the team visualise a more striking finish; taking what is a functional product and turned it into a real design feature. It works, looks brilliant, and will stay that way for a long time.DesignThe Entrance Mat design mirrors the LED ceiling light-well above as well as the width of the double doors. The shape also echoes other dynamic rectangular design features throughout the building.Bronze, anodised aluminium adds a layer of luxury and ties in perfectly with the die-cut company logos on the facing wall. To complete the look, the perimeter border is laid in sheet form with INTRAlux Ultimate in contrasting warm neutral Lichen (912), a beautifully on-trend grey green.INTRAshape breaks design boundaries and Entrance Matting traditions, offering distinctive design possibilities. There’s nothing else like this on the market. With an extensive range of shapes and colours to choose from, you have the freedom to unleash your creativity, combining forms and textures with infinite possibilities to create rhythm, movement, and perspective.Sustainability INTRAshape and INTRAlux Ultimate perfectly aligned with AXIS House’s commitment to sustainability and their SKA rating ambitions.INTRAlux Ultimate features ECONYL®; 100% recycled content and they specified PureBase; our PVC-free backing option. Sustainable choices that help shape a better future.PureBase has a significantly lower environmental whole-life impact, from production to disposal. It’s also much easier to handle and install as it is 20% lighter and 3 x more flexible. ECONYL® is regenerated waste nylon. It has the same properties as brand new nylon, but can be infinitely recycled and re-moulded. ECONYL® is cradle-to-cradle certified and eligible for LEED® v4 points.PerformanceOur products helped AXIS House achieve the prestigious WELL Building Standards and SKA Gold rating (soft flooring criteria) for the entire building.High-performing Entrance Matting contributes to WELL Standards on air quality management by absorbing dust, liquids, and air pollution efficienty. The final specification also delivers outstanding performance and aesthetics. This office Entrance Matting provides excellent protection for hard floor surfaces, ensuring durability and longevity for commercial office settings.
