About 1,100 metres of Q-railing’s oval-shaped, stainless steel Easy Glass cap rail on staircases throughout the station is a perfect example of this preference for quality. Connah's Quay, Flintshire. ASF 5 Rail Quayside Post and Rail

Connah's Quay, Flintshire. ASF 5 Rail Quayside Post and Rail

Architectural Street Furnishings part of WB White Foundry

ASF manufactured and supplied the ASF 211 5 Rail Quayside Post System for the above project. Sited on a raised plinth, the baseplate option was chosen. The client decided that all the rails were to be the same diameter - in this case 48mm. The rails were grouped on the lower part of the posts to reduced the risk of 'roll through' into the water and as such increasing the safety for children and young people at the waters edge. The posts are 100% recycled cast iron and are 100% recyclable. Cast iron can be recycled indefinitely with no loss in property. Posts were hand finished in zinc rich metal primer and ASF metal shield top coat. Rails were left galvanised which offers a pleasing contrasting effect.

Q-railing

In Vlaardingen Museum, the Netherlands, old meets new. The use of concrete, aluminium and glass creates a powerful sense of open space and transparency. The many level changes and loft-like spaces meant it was important to find a balustrade solution unobstructed by a conventional handrail or metal grip. The Easy Glass Pro structural glass balustrade offered the ability to make fine adjustments to the positioning of each glass panel from the installation side – invaluable when being installed on the various sections of finished concrete flooring levels.

The architectural plan included a roof terrace on the second floor, which incorporated a balustrade. In total, more than 40 metres of stainless steel Q-line balustrade with glass clamps, handrails and offset handrail brackets were mounted. Modern and minimal in appearance, this solution nevertheless offered considerable time and cost savings. The exterior balustrade delivered unbeatable safety without sacrificing transparency. The result is a stunning, uninterrupted view of the waterfront.

Ceramic tile rail substructure system

Ceramic tile rail substructure system

Wallbarn Ltd

Laying ceramic tiles on flat roofs, terraces and podium decks has been made easier with the development of the Rail System, an integrated substructure system to increase stability of suspended tiles. The Rail System incorporates an adjustable height pedestal with a special clip head fitting, a specially profiled aluminium rail which clicks onto the headpiece without the need for mechanical fixings and a top headpiece which slides along the rail to hold and position the tile. By tying the pedestals together via the rail, there is far less risk of an individual pedestal moving or changing height, leading to far less risk of a tile rocking over time. This assures the integrity of the upper surface and gives a health and safety improvement to the area. The rail gives added structural stability as the weight is distributed laterally along the rails and not driven directly downwards onto the pedestal beneath. The top headpiece can be slid along the rail to fit to the corners of the tile above. This means the edge of the tile does not necessarily have to be directly above the pedestal, giving much greater flexibility for positioning.Consider the possibility of a drainage outlet or other awkward detail being directly beneath the edge of a surface tile. Instead of having to cut the tile back, simply move the pedestals away for the outlet and let the rail circumvent the hazard. Position the top head in the correct place to fit around the corner of the tile and the issue is addressed quickly, securely and easily. The rail system brings greater lateral stability to the tiled deck and is a faster, more efficient way to lay porcelain tiles and slabs. It is a major technical improvement to suspended tile and slab installations.

This is a BS EN 1176 Playground Equipment and RoSPA compliant metal railing system designed to clearly demarcate play areas, and be safe for children. It has no pointy edges or trap or pinch points, to minimise the chase of injury.Access to the play areas was provided by IAE’s Prosafe Playground Gate. This is a speed controlled self closing unit complying with the same safety specifications as the Playspec Playground Fence. To complete the look the railing was colour-matched to the theme of the park, as shown in the images above.IAE Blore Ball Top RailingsFor the railing along the roller coaster ride paths, the contractor chose IAE Blore Ball Top Railings. This system provided an elegant solution to managing the queues and keeping park visitors away from potentially hazardous areas under the roller coasters. It was finished off with an eye-catching alternating colour finish.IAE Duex Edge ProtectionA section of IAE Duex Edge Protection was also supplied to guard against a steep drop falling away from a path that ran alongside a visitor area. This system has been load tested up to 1.5kN/m and specified as suitably robust for the application, providing the necessary safety factor, without being too intrusive on the overall look of the park.Specifying IAE’s Playspec Fencing, Blore Railing, and Duex Edge ProtectionIAE's Playspec Playground Fencing, Blore Ball Top Railings, and Duex Edge Protection are all popular systems installed on hundreds of sites across the country and can be specified with confidence. For further details on the systems and to specify them on your project, check out the featured products sections below, or contact IAE Fencing Division directly.

This long run of railings brought with it a number of manufacturing challenges and techniques. They needed to be curved in profile so they form a quayside post, curving and leaning inwards so they do not make a 'natural ladder' beside the water. The panels themselves are manufactured in mild steel, finished galvanised and then painted in satin finished graphite grey. The top rails are of a contrasting polished finished grade 316 stainless steel, finished satin brushed. The run of railings has a combination of straight and curved panels, meaning each individual horizontal infill bar needed to be curved individually.

Mytholmroyd Project: ASF Quayside Post & Rail, ASF Seating and ASF Tree Grilles

Architectural Street Furnishings part of WB White Foundry

ASF were approached with a very much open book brief to offer a solution for a church square in Mytholmroyd, West Yorkshire. The area needed a wall top parapet, some glass balustrade, seating and tree grilles.ASF specified a wall top quayside post and rail, but using materials that offered the minimum interference with the view for people using the square whilst still meeting the needs of building regulations and parapet requirements. Uprights were from thinner, laser profiled materials with no T piece to make them as unobtrusive as possible and the rails were intermediately staggered with tension cables for the same reasons. Once installed the whole post and rail system was fully welded together on site to increase rigidity and strength. The job was then fully polished to offer a sublime finish quality.A small area of glass balustrade was installed at one end of the square where ground levels dropped away. A seat was paced in this area to allow people to sit and observe the river and wildlife through the glass.ASF 6012 seats were used all around the site offering seating for up to 36 people at one time.ASF 100% recycled cast iron tree grilles were also installed, and finished in a simple clear lacquer which maintains the gunmetal look of a new casting with just slight areas of oxidisation that are used as a feature of the finish.

ASF Steel Quayside Post with Rail & Tension Cables, Stockport

Architectural Street Furnishings part of WB White Foundry

This was not actually a quayside application, instead the quayside profile was chosen as the curved profile doesn't create a 'natural ladder' and better discourages people climbing over from a pedestrian area into traffic. The curved profile was set up to have 2 solid rails and 4 tension cables which were used to bridge the gaps between the main rails equidistantly.Laser profiled steel posts with knuckles for rails and flanges to host the cables were manufactured as bespoke solutions. The outcome is a successful balance between a utilitarian piece of street furniture and a product with a decent amount of design and architectural integrity.
