Quality Assurance Laboratory for a Pharmaceutical Blue Chip Client

Quality Assurance Laboratory for a Pharmaceutical Blue Chip Client

Norwood Group Limited

PROJECT OVERVIEWWorking with BES, we have successfully completed a refurbishment of an existing space into new quality assurance (QA) laboratory for a pharmaceutical blue-chip client. The fundamental requirement was to deliver a purpose- designed laboratory, located at the heart of the client’s busy manufacturing site, to run robust microbiological analytical activities for the next 25 years.SCOPE OF WORKTo meet the project requirements, we utilised several products, including 100mm Mediline partitions, metal pan ceilings, walk-on ceilings and various types of doors. Our in-house team became involved at an early stage of the design process. Working closely with the main contractor and end-users, we were able to recommend different products which would benefit the client’s processes and flow of the building. One of the key solutions we offered was Norwood’s automatic hermetically sealing sliding door system with large vision panels. This specifically designed doors not only saved space but also provided users with an open feel of the facility. It is due to this project that Norwood became a member of the Automatic Door Suppliers Association – (ADSA). Not many companies hold an ADSA membership and being associated with ADSA promotes the highest standards in automatic doors and gives Norwood operatives the qualification for certifying their own automatic doors to BS 7036: 1988. We delivered a modern and energy efficient facility, compliant with Good Laboratory Practice (GLP) requirements, within a controlled budget. The laboratory was finished to the highest standards, with a great attention to detail throughout. This project demonstrates that by involving Norwood at the early design stages, we can add real value, advising on the most suitable solutions, tailored to the specific needs of our clients.

Assured fire safety depends on sticking with a quality specification

Assured fire safety depends on sticking with a quality specification

Promat UK

Dame Judith Hackitt’s assertion that the building industry routinely puts cost before quality will come as no surprise to architects and contractors who often see their specifications being challenged, and changed, just to save a few pounds. ‘Value engineering’ has become synonymous with an industry obsessed seeking to do everything at the lowest possible cost. Fire rated glass, framing materials and other components must be evaluated and scrutinised at the product specification stage. Once specified, passive fire protection products must stay specified, as the slightest change to the specification can compromise the expected level of fire resistance.

Agar Grove, London

Agar Grove, London

Knauf Insulation Ltd

Agar Grove is a multi-award-winning development, created by 5-star housebuilder, The Hill Group for Camden Council, as part of their Community Investment Programme. With a proposed 507 new homes, once complete Agar Grove will be the largest Passivhaus development in the UK.Knauf Insulation’s glass blowing mineral wool Supafil® has been specified for Phase 1C of the project, which comprises 125 homes. We spoke to Hill’s Senior Technical Coordinator, Ben Clarke and Senior Contract Surveyor, Matthew Bricknell about the needs of the project.Prioritising real performancePassivhaus is an internationally recognised building standard, resulting in very high energy efficiency. For the residents of Agar Grove, this will mean greater thermal comfort, alongside reduced energy bills.Achieving the Passivhaus standard requires a complex balance of design factors to create high levels of insulation and airtightness. To ensure their designs would deliver in the real world, it was therefore important for Hill to specify products which would perform as well in situ as they did on paper. As Ben explains, “We chose to use blown-in insulation because of its real-world thermal performance. Installing insulation boards can sometimes mean gaps are left between them, which leads to cold bridges in the build. But that can be more easily avoided with a blown-in product.”To provide further quality assurance, Hill has appointed contractors from Knauf Insulation’s network of Approved Supafil® Installers. Trained by Knauf Insulation’s own Regional Technical Managers, they have the necessary product knowledge and expertise to ensure a quality installation.Using Supafil® will also mean that less product is wasted on-site. When rigid insulation boards are cut to size, offcuts are often discarded because they are difficult to use elsewhere. By contrast, Supafil® has a zero-waste potential. When the cavity is full any excess product remains in the insulation blowing machine hopper, ready to be installed on the next plot, and when the job is complete Supafil®’s packaging can be recycled. Ben says: “As a responsible business, Hill is always looking for ways to reduce waste on our projects wherever we can, and this solution will help us to do that”.Evidencing qualityThe Passivhaus accreditation requires Hill to demonstrate the energy efficiency of Agar Grove, which will involve data collection throughout the build and thermal imaging of the finished product. As Matt explains, “We have a significant quality assurance requirement. We need to be able to show Camden Council that we have insulated the building as specified and that’s not always a simple task – particularly with blown-in solutions which by their nature, are hidden within the cavity.”To help meet this challenge, Hill’s Approved Supafil® Installers will use Knauf Insulation’s app-based site reporting system, KinetiK®. The app allows the installer to select their site and plot number on their mobile device, photograph the elevation, and then scan each pack of Supafil® as it’s installed.Matt continues, “KinetiK® will enable us to confirm that the insulation has gone in as specified. This is essential for our client, but it also gives us confidence too. If areas are missed during an install, there are time and cost implications, so having a tool like KinetiK® will provide us with added assurance that the cavity has been fully filled.” Agar Grove will be the latest in a number of Passivhaus projects which Knauf Insulation has supported. Aluminium Roofline Products Ltd

Langton Homes is a well-established family-owned company specialising in developing properties throughout the Midlands for more than thirty years. One of their recent projects was four high-end luxury detached six-bedroom houses featuring extensive outbuildings, each set within large private grounds. The main property on the development – Langton House, was being specifically built for the owner of Langton Homes.Having used Mustang® Seamless gutters on projects in the past, they had no issues specifying it again for this development. Existing garages on the development, which had previously been fitted with uPVC as a cheaper option, were now failing and leaking, so they were replaced at the same time as the rest of the development was installed with Mustang® Seamless Aluminium Gutters.Mustang® was ideal for this build due to the sleek, clean lines of the gutter, with no external brackets on view. Mustang seamless gutters are strong and durable but lightweight and easy to install, with most of the preparation work being done at ground level before the gutter is raised to height for the final fixing into place, meaning that it is often safer and quicker than fitting traditional guttering. As the aluminium is roll-formed on-site to the exact dimensions of the building in continuous lengths of up to 30 metres, there is no waste.Once installed Mustang® Seamless Aluminium Guttering requires minimal maintenance. It is the only quality-assured seamless gutter system certified by the British Board of Agrément (BBA) to last over 30 years. A certification ARP has held for over 25 years.Colonnade aluminium downpipes completed the installation and were polyester powder coated (PPC) in Anthracite Grey (RAL 7016) to match the colour of the gutter in our in-house purpose-built PPC facility.Aluminium is a natural, non-corrosive material and needs little maintenance, but it is also fully recyclable. Aluminium will not crack, creek or fade, resulting in a truly ‘fit and forget’ system.Andy Craven, Site Manager of Langton Homes, said:“We have continuously used Mustang® Seamless Guttering as a superior alternative to PVC, we have absolute confidence in the installation and the low maintenance of the product.”

Recticel supplies the high quality insulation solution to transform an old school in Oxford

Recticel supplies the high quality insulation solution to transform an old school in Oxford

Recticel Insulation

THE PROJECT: Recticel Insulation supplied the high quality insulation solution for an old school in Oxford. The main aim of this project, carried out by Touchstone Lofts, was to convert an uninsulated historic school building originally constructed in 1860 into a modern, energy efficient four-bedroom residential unit. The contractor endeavored to create a two storey dwelling and hoped to minimise headroom loss with insulation in both the floor and pitched roof, therefore selecting the right product was paramount.THE SOLUTION: Eurothane® GP, a low-thermal conductivity PIR insulation panel for use in multiple building envelope applications, was the obvious choice for The Institute’s ground floor and loft insulation. The product's thermal performance of λ = 0.022 W/mK enabled an appropriate thickness selection, so the desired minimum headroom loss was achieved giving the completed build an energy efficiency rating of B. The contractor was thrilled with this given the constraints associated with retrofitting insulation into a period building.Paul Johal, Owner of Touchstone Lofts explained:"Recticel’s insulation provided us with a thermal solution that achieved the required U-value targets whilst keeping the overall thickness to a minimum. The quality of the product is excellent and at a competitive price. The extremely proficient technical team of Recticel Insulation were very responsive with U-value calculations, meaning we could move forward with the project more efficiently. Having the right advice and products from Recticel certainly played a crucial role in achieving our aims. We are delighted with the final outcome."About Eurothane® GP:Eurothane® GP is a high performance PIR insulation board that is light weight, easy to cut, handle and install. They’re what set us apart from other mirror producers.”NEW & IMPROVED SILVERINGThroughout the 2000s, Virginia Mirror sourced its coatings from a paint supplier that eventually discontinued its mirror coatings portfolio, leaving Virginia Mirror in need of a new supplier. At the beginning of 2019, with quality, craftsmanship and service top-of-mind, the long-standing company chose Sherwin-Williams as its primary mirror coatings provider.“The kickoff discussions with Virginia Mirror centered around the quality of our silvering chemicals and paint,” said Tim Reilly, Sherwin-Williams mirror coatings technical sales manager. “They wanted to learn as much as they could before moving forward with our chemistries.”For quality, performance and application assurance, Virginia Mirror tested the Sherwin-Williams coatings on its production line.“After initial testing, we saw less rejection on the line,” said Michael Fain, plant manager for Virginia Mirror Company. “The chemicals just ran better. They were higher quality than the previous coatings we used, and the technical support we received from the team played a tremendous role in choosing them as our supplier.”

Award-winning project is a true reflection of Neaco quality

NEACO Ltd

Reflections in Chesterton, by HC Moss (Builders) Ltd, won Best Small Development in the Cambridge News Property Awards to become the latest in a long list of award-winning projects to feature Neaco products. Paul Ursell of HC Moss (Builders) Ltd explained the benefits of using Neaco’s structural glass: “We incorporated frameless bi-fold doors and needed to match this with frameless glass balustrade affording a seamless outlook over the river. Every detail needed to be very high-end so we specified a stainless steel top rail to cap the structural glass.”

Natural beauty, easy to maintain and sustainable quality– UPM ProFi Piazza, Californian Oak

UPM Biocomposites

Natural beauty, easy to maintain and sustainable quality were the key factors for one family’s decking choice – UPM ProFi Piazza, Californian OakSaija and Petri Nylund and their two grown up children were already experienced home builders. As their family situation and needs have changed, they decided to build a new home. Once again they planned a turn-key solution: this time a stylish and modern white house built for them by the contractor Hevi-kivitalot as part of 2020’s Tuusula Housing Fair.Their brief for the design of both exterior and interior living areas of the house was very clear: they wanted to have high quality, ageless materials, with a hint of everyday luxury. Colours should be natural and neutral. The internal and external living areas should be seamlessly joined together. There are three different balconies or outdoor deckings, each with a different function. One balcony opens out from the master bedroom. The second balcony, a rooftop terrace with an outdoor jacuzzi, lies next to the sauna and bathroom. The third and main decking area opens out directly from the kitchen and living room and features a partly glazed area with a dining table. Natural light floods into this perfect merging of the indoor and outdoor living areas. The interior of the house was created by the interior designer Laura Seppänen, who also found the decking material, UPM ProFi Piazza in Californian Oak colour. “We immediately liked the natural look of this material, with its modern woodgrain design and texture. The neutral “Californian Oak” colour also matched well with the pure white colour of the house and the other colour choices we have made elsewhere in our new home.” explained Petri Nylund, father of the family. “I especially appreciate that it is very easy to clean and maintain – only periodically washing is needed”, said his wife Saija Nylund. “It also feels comfortable and safe with bare feet. An additional advantage is that it’s made with a high recycled content – we prefer to choose materials which are also environmentally friendly”, she continues. “In general, we are very pleased with our new home and also all of the outdoor areas”, the couple says together. This summer, the whole Nylund family are enjoying their first summer in their new home, especially the long sunny days and warm evenings in their extended outdoor living room, made with UPM ProFi Piazza decking.

Innovative insulation solution helps housing project ensure quality fabric-first approach

Innovative insulation solution helps housing project ensure quality fabric-first approach

Recticel Insulation

Eurowall®+, Recticel’s innovative full-fill cavity wall PIR board, has been chosen for a new affordable housing development. With its advanced tongue and groove joint, it helped to achieve the project’s desired U-value whilst ensuring a ‘built as designed’ envelope. In total, 2000m2 of Eurowall®+ board was installed as part of a £3.3m new-build project in Bedmond Road, Abbots Langley – a large, picturesque village in Hertfordshire. On completion, the 17-home development on behalf of housing association, Thrive Homes, will introduce ‘good quality’ properties to the area. In order that the buildings achieved the regulatory U-value, the insulation needed to ensure a high-quality build whilst being simple to install. Eurowall®+ met both requirements comfortably.  Jarvis Contracting, in conjunction with architects, Avebury, was selected to deliver the scheme. It included the installation of 90mm-thick Eurowall®+ insulation, which earns its billing as Recitcel’s ‘flagship’ product due to its innovative composition and exceptional thermal performance. The boards have a tongue and groove joint on all four edges to ensure they lock tightly together. This inventive format helps to eliminate moisture ingress and possible heat loss through poor joints, whilst offering bricklayers a faster way to build. Once fitted together the boards created a thermally tight envelope, ensuring the fabric-first approach resulted in warm, efficient homes for the Bedmond Road project.  Eurowall®+ can achieve a 0.18 U-value with a 90mm-thick panel in a 100mm cavity. To reach the same thermal performance with mineral wool, for example, the project would require a much thicker insulation. Therefore, Eurowall®+ helps reduce a building’s footprint; a crucial characteristic where plot size is limited.  Indeed, the 10mm air gap, which is created by a 90mm Eurowall®+ PIR board achieving a U-value of 0.18 W/m2K in a traditional 100mm masonry cavity wall, helps speed-up installation times for a more cost-effective build in comparison with other rigid full-fill solutions.Simon Blackham, Technical Manager at Recticel Insulation explained:"Eurowall®+ benefits the installer, due to its slim composition facilitating a more rapid, effective installation, whilst its performance ensures regulation energy requirements are achieved. Such all-round capabilities made it ideal for the Bedmond Road project. It didn’t disappoint on either count."Strong and durable, Eurowall®+ will not degrade or deteriorate due to moisture. This means its thermal performance will be maintained for the long-term comfort and wellbeing of the future occupants of this fine-looking and much-welcome new housing development. About Eurowall®+:Eurowall® + is a premium, high performance full fill insulation board with precision cut tongue and groove joints on all four sides. This ensures that the boards lock tightly together minimising heat loss through thermal bridging. This unique joint offers increased protection against wind driven rain as well as improved windtightness. Eurowall® + is also designed with a 10mm cavity requirement in mind, so that space can be left for conventional bricklaying techniques.
