Restoration of the foundations at a wind energy plant

Concrete foundations of a wind energy plant: Due to the influences of the weather over the years, the following damages were noticed: •Cracks due to movement •Moisture into the structure •Spalling of the concrete •Corrosion of the reinforcement •Flaking paint The first step in the restoration of the foundation was pressure injecting the cracks - through which an elastic closure of the cracks was realized. The total surface was strengthened with a unique sillicate liquid. A waterproof sloped layer was installed; finally, the moving joint between the foundations and the steel tower of the wind energy plant was sealed elastically.

Plant Trellis – Green Park Station


Green Park Station provides access to the Jubilee, Piccadilly and Victoria Lines. The £60 million refurbishment to achieve step-free access included a copper canopy, a Portland stone entrance and a ramp from the ticket hall into the Park featuring green wall screening. Lang+Fulton designed and supplied 300sqm of panels to clad the raked inner facade of both retaining walls and the tapered wall-heads, which would support the green wall planting. The panels were made to custom sizes from Terra-34 grating and fixed with varying lengths of bracket to accommodate the stepped areas in the walls.

AET Flexible Space

The new building is part of JLR’s manufacturing expansion plans adding to the £500 million engine plant on the i54 Business Park. The initial HVAC brief specified trench heating for the perimeter areas of the office facilities. M&E specialists NG Bailey were satisfied that Fantiles with additional electric trim heaters could offer the same performance, but with greater flexibility than the trench heating system. This fitted nicely with Jaguar Land Rover’s outline strategy to create a transformational working environment, providing a showcase for environmental sustainability.

Basement waterproofing at Ardley Energy from Waste Plant

The new Ardley EfW Plant, including a 12m basement built over an Artesian Well, presented a host of construction challenges. Due to the extreme water pressure created by the Artesian Well, as well as ammonium salts in the ground, Fosroc worked closely with Tata Projects specifying a solution using Proofex Engage to provide a watertight, chemically resistant barrier, with Supercast SW20 in the construction joints to reinforce the floor to wall joint. Fosroc provided a ‘total solution’ package to ensure Tata Projects could feel confident with the proposed specification, from basement waterproofing, to grouting crane bases, flooring and sealants.

The «Plus-Energie-Haus» constructed by the Technische Universität Darmstadt is a Solar Decathlon winner. The competition has been held each year since 2002 by the US Ministry for Energy. The task is to design and build a residential house to suit life that is self-sufficient with regard to energy. The houses must cover their entire energy requirements through self-produced solar power. Between two layers is a protected external area with sliding windows and folding slat shutters that can be opened and closed as needed. The folding sliding shutters are equipped with HAWA Variofold 80 H.

The Shetland Gas plant (SGP) represents a 25bn investment by Total in Shetland to service the Laggan and Tormore gas fields. The site was covered by a large peat bog that needed preserving for reinstatement at the end of life decommissioning. The solution was to build two peat stores in the slopes which were to be overtopped to allow water to peculate through. ABG recommended Pozidrain 12S500/NW8 in place of stone enabling the maximum void space to be utilised for peat storage. Erosaweb GWX 150/300 was used for soil reinforcement providing a native environment for flora and fauna.

750 metres deep inside a Welsh mountain lies the biggest stored power plant in Europe. With its remote location and harsh operating environment, Engie First Hydro contacted the Latchways team at MSA Safety to provide the complete solution for all its operational and maintenance fall protection needs. 7 million cubic meters of water are pumped through the giant turbines to generate power and then reversed as pumps to return the water to the reservoir. This tough working environment presents unique safety challenges for the electrical & mechanical operational and maintenance teams when working at height.

What made this project particularly challenging was the 1.8m deep ceiling void. In addition, the access point was also in a prominent location outside the showroom offices. Upgrading physical perimeter security using 358 mesh, access control measures and crash rated systems for a water treatment plant

Following the brief outlined by the water treatment plan the proposal adopted for implementation was for the creation of secure access control. Bi-Folding Speed Gates, topped with razor wire were supplied to each of the main entry and exit points to the site. These were supported by PAS 68 rising bollards and rising arm barriers with synchronised operation and traffic light signalling. The gates and barriers were flanked by runs of Jacksons mesh fencing to provide a separate pedestrian entrance to the facility, while static PAS 68 rated bollards were additionally deployed to manage traffic within the site.

The plant content of the living columns and living walls has been selected to offer maximum air quality benefits, acoustic benefit, while the introduction of nature strongly supports staff health.

The living wall incorporates more than 97,000 plants and 20 different species including fruit bearing plants, including strawberries. These particular plants were selected to include predominantly native and wildlife-friendly species, the majority of which are evergreen in order to provide coverage all year round. The living wall was designed to add both ecology and biodiversity to the area, but also it will flower and bloom, providing a pop of colour and variety with the seasons. ANS Global were delighted to have been part of this project which has won the Best New Car Park award.

The underfloor air conditioning system was jointly specified by the Architect and Consultant due to its flexibility, ease of installation and design freedom that the system allows. The system was praised by the architect as it is able to be retrofitted to existing plant structure, and as a result they were able to absorb late fit out amendments into the programme without major plant reconfiguration. The site has won multiple Architecture and Aviation service awards.

Biomass Access Cover - Lithuania

Surespan recently travelled to Lithuania to manufacture and supply a floor hatch to enable Finnish energy company Fortum to access their biomass pit at their new energy plant. The 5000 x 5000 mm hydraulically operated, double leaf hatch was designed to be easily operated by an electrically driven pump power pack. Fortum wanted the simplest operation for a grab crane to gain easy access to the biomass plant so Surespan worked with engineering consultants AF Consult to come up with an effective solution.

We recently completed a large installation of our ThinkingWall frameless whiteboard as part of an office refurbishment in Nottingham. These visual planning boards were placed around an open plan office to provide working space behind desks. The ThinkingWall system allows multiple panels to be joined almost seamlessly creating one large writing surface at the desired size. In this case the visual planning boards were produced in a variety of different widths to suit particular wall spaces We kept he height of all ThinkingWall whiteboards the same to give a consistent look across the space.

ANS Global have been involved with designing the living walls on the scheme, working with Spacehub and Make Architects including plant assessments of native species growing in the London Wall and incorporating these into the new living walls. The ANS Living Wall system was chosen for the scheme as a modular pre-grown system that uses natural soil and ANS Global have completed all works including planting and installation.

A tiered floor structure and 368 A2 seats were installed into the Planet Ice rink at Widnes. The A2 seat is a backless seat with lumbar support. The seating structure took into account the environment. To ensure the health and safety of spectators and visitors, the seats were waterproof and anti-slip surfaces were provided.

Land Rover – Geneva motor show - Interior Living Walls

Jaguar Land Rover came to ANS to design an interior living wall. The living wall was to act as the backdrop to the very important client meeting area and the green wall measured 4.75m wide by 2.5m high. Environmental impact is very important to Jaguar Land Rover, so the exhibition stand at the Geneva Motor Show allowed them to reinforce this. The interior wall featured more than 10 plant varieties, native to the area. After the show, as with all our temporary interior living wall installations the plants were donated to a local charity.

Aspen Stainless supplied bespoke stainless-steel solutions to the UK’s leading food producer Cranswick. Aspen worked closely with Trundley Design to design effective hygienic plant equipment for a number of food processing plants across the UK.The drainage system was installed to support the cleaning regime and water flow around the factory. This blended perfectly with the John Lord flooring design and allowed for waste to drain effectively into the surrounding channels and gullies; creating a seamless connection between the systems and prevented any standing waste and bacteria from building up.

Cemex were approached by our customer to find a solution for an external concreted area to upgrade and extend the grounds at Blaise Castle Plant Nursey. The Nursery has enjoyed great success in producing over 2.5 million plants per year for local authorities and required the additional ground space to meet their continually growing demands. The bulk of the project, spread over seven large blocks, used DucoWall Basic to provide plant screening. One element, where higher level glazing needs privacy screening from the walkways below, DucoWall Classic W 50Z is installed inverted so that the areas gain maximum light without sacrificing privacy. Another challenge was to incorporate louvre doors into the plant screening areas without interrupting the aesthetic appearance. Here again a standard DucoDoor solution provided exactly what was required. The DucoDoor can use the full range of DucoWall blades to provide a beautiful and uniform result.

Princes Park in Eastbourne, Sussex - a popular site that is well used by both the local community and visitors alike. Contemporary in style, the area comprises a large open space with sloping banks of planting and low level concrete and gabion retaining walls. Furnitubes’ Elements benches with plate end supports perfectly complement the contemporary style of the site, with the steel supports painted in an acidic yellow-green to provide colour accents similar to those found in the new ornamental grass planting alongside. The linearity of the hardwood slats work well in this seaside location, providing comfortable seating surfaces for all.

Procter’s were specified to design, supply & install automated gates and ‘SBD’ fencing to the front of HMRC offices in the centre of Manchester. Bowmer & Kirkland were asked to create something out of the ordinary to the head offices of HMRC. We were asked to provide fencing & gates clad with Aluminium along side their landscaping architects so they could carry out planting in front of our fencing. Designing the bases so planting could take place whilst avoiding many services as well as underground parking were some of the obstacles faced along with city centre working.

he Great Blakenham incinerator plant is a joint initiative between Suffolk County Council and waste management company SITA UK. This energy-from-waste facility uses the household and business waste left after recycling, burning materials which would otherwise go to landfill, and generates enough electricity to power 30,000 homes. Although operations carried out at the plant are largely industrial, the appearance of the building itself including the suspended, glass fronted office section required hard landscaping to increase overall aesthetics, as well as providing a SuDS solution to ensure safe and practical surface water removal in the car parking areas...

Over 18 months, Planet Partitioning worked within a budget to achieve the sound attenuation levels required for the Sir Duncan Rice Library, using a combination of p100 double glazed partitioning and p20 single glazed frameless glass partition systems. We also installed timber doors throughout the library and was responsible for drywalling, which included solid partitioning between rooms and plasterboard wall lining. Planet used 27mm, low-profile frameless glazing to create a peaceful and open plan library with a spiralling off-centre atrium with 13km of shelving.
