The Sixfields development is part of the Northampton Brownfield Initiative where a permeable pavement was chosen for the car park which serves the rugby and football clubs. Sitting on the bank of the River Nene, it was evident that any design had to minimise future risk of flooding if it was to be viable. Brett advised on the use of SuDS to minimise the risk of any future flooding on the site. The project which was supported by SCAPE and funded by the ESFA, comprised of a brand-new building with a new reception area, 15 additional classrooms and office space.The SolutionWe were invited to attend a design meeting in February 2019 to discuss a shade and shelter solution that would work well with the area and match the design whilst also being cost effective and of the highest quality. From the meeting, it was agreed by all that the Coniston Wall Mounted Canopy would be the perfect shade and shelter solution and the Langdale Cycle Shelters were the perfect product to provide the cycle coverage required.

‘A little bit extra’, was the concept when creating the beautiful new spa garden at Pennyhill Park; a premium space, set within the luxurious spa grounds where you can switch off from the world and indulge in the very best.  Four Cabanas were key to the design, each providing clients with a private ‘pad’ for the day. The Cabanas had to offer all the benefits of being outside, with the comforts of being inside, allowing guests to enjoy the roll-top spa bath and loungers beneath in a pleasant environment throughout the day.  Our Deluxe Outdoor Living Pod was incorporated by the project designer thanks to its flexibility, in particular the ability to incorporate additional uprights and a wall to the rear and part side where the padded bench, fridge and coffee machine are all incorporated. Each module measured 5m x 4m providing ample space for the facilities within.  The motorised rotating louvered roof of the system allows guests to play with light and shade to create the perfect ambience beneath the structure from sunrise to sunset, whilst the optional integrated screens to the open sides can be deployed as required to provide privacy whilst also offering protection from low sun and even breezes.  Graham Copeman, General Manager at Pennyhill Park commented: “Our cabanas give guests the opportunity to indulge in the best, feel at their best, and relax in style. The ‘Deluxe’ Outdoor Living Pod™ design provides privacy and shade from above and on all sides with remote control blinds, whilst being beautifully adaptable allowing us to build around the space to create the perfect indulgent haven. Our vision was to bring the luxury of a hotel room to the great outdoors, which Caribbean Blinds seamlessly helped us achieve.” Close collaboration with the interior designer and facilities manager throughout ensured a smooth process, with fully detailed CAD drawings provided to ensure a seamless incorporation of the structures into the overall scheme, which was particularly important for the positioning of foundations and services. The New Hollies transport cafe has been serving drivers and travellers on Watling Street (A5) since 1933. The cafe has grown significantly and hundreds of HGVs visit each week creating a demand for robust, sustainable parking. Due to the high water table, permission was granted but with the restrictions to keep the water level at the pre development level. It became clear that permeable paving would meet the requirements. ABG Truckcell was used as surfacing with Terrex as a filtration textile. Truckcell is a heavy duty plastic paver able to withstand the forces exerted by multiple wheeled vehicles.

The new store at Coventry was built using environmentally sustainable building materials. As the first city centre store, it also provides contained parking for 800 cars. Lang+Fulton supplied ventilation screens to the ground floor parking which extended to form a barrier to the first level. Terra-34 grating was chosen with a 34x100mm aperture to comply with anti-climb guidelines. Panels were custom-sized to continue the aesthetic of the surrounding cladding material and mounted to conform with the horizontal and vertical joints. Over 200m² of screening was supplied in a hot-dip galvanized finish incorporating two emergency exits.

Franke were thrilled to provide products to one of the UK’s leading theme parks and attractions for a recent refurbishment, which consisted of a large male toilet room, a large female toilet room and a less abled disabled washroom. Water conservation was also an important aspect. Franke supplied a number of self closing Pureline taps, which only release water for a controlled amount of time, bringing down water usage in the washroom. Stainless steel table top soap dispensers (SD80) were also supplied, removing the possibility of spillages onto the vanity units and making the area easier to clean.

Whilst in the process of building a new annexe at the school's site in Wrexham, the school identified a need for a number of canopies at various areas around the exterior of the building to provide shade and shelter for the pupils and staff.These new canopies would provide a covered outside area that could be enjoyed all year round, whatever the weather. However, in order to provide effective cover when moving from inside the building to under the canopy. Furthermore, the school was not keen on the aesthetics of a metal framed structure and so required an alternative material to be used for the framework.As the school did not want a metal structure installed, Able Canopies recommended their new range of Tarnhow Canopies which are constructed from Glulam timber.

Heathrow Park is an industrial estate situated close to Heathrow Airport, UK. The construction project involved different collaboration partners – a UK steelwork and installation company and a main contractor, both operating as key stakeholders in the Heathrow Park project. The steelwork company contacted PcP on behalf of the main contractor, looking for a cost-efficient steel maintenance roof walkway to access roof equipment.Project criteria and proposalOn behalf of the main contractor, a steelwork contractor approached PcP to quote for a suitable product for 3,260 square metres of steel flooring for a maintenance walkway. Normally, twisted bar grating is specified for projects of this kind, but PcP CUBE® gratings were suggested to match the customer’s criteria regarding delivery time.The main contractor required grating for a steel flooring platform which had to be supplied by a very tight deadline and at a competitive price but with a high-quality finish. Once the customer accepted the initial proposal for the CUBE® gratings, PcP ensured that the quotation met the all the criteria specified by the client for the planning application. We provided Static load calculations and samples in order to obtain final approval.The solution CUBE® grating – an alternative to twisted bar gratingPcP proposed the new B-CUBE® grating for Heathrow Park flooring as it could be made to suit the spans required at a competitive price. However, and more importantly, the B-CUBE® grating proved a viable proposition to the client due to the low weight of the product compared to other gratings. The delivery time also met the strict site requirements. For the project, the B-CUBE® grating was manufactured over a six-week period using robotic welding on both day and night shifts in order to meet the project schedule.PcP experts delivered tailor-made CUBE® gratings for the steel flooring, and the work included paying special attention to details, accurate technical drawings, and providing all the necessary product certification and datasheets.Customer support, technical expertise and calculationsIn order to address any queries, PcP provided full support from its technical department and customer service team. The following elements were relevant for meeting the strict requirements to both product and delivery:PcP in-house calculation software and expertise was used to provide the know-how required to produce specifications and data sheets in line with British Standards and to meet customer requirements.PcP’s experienced in-house drawing team provided full panel drawings for client approval prior to manufacture.

A four-storey underground car park needs to meet enormous fire protection requirements. Preventive fire and smoke protection and fully functional escape routes and emergency exits were top of the list when planning the doors and barriers. T90 fire and smoke protection doorsets were used for highly frequented areas with a higher risk of fire and the gallery and escape routes between the individual fire compartments were fitted with single and double-leaf T30 doorsets with round glazing. Access points to the individual levels were equipped with T30 sliding doors and T30 sectional doors.

Since 2015 Volvo have been refurbishing their UK showrooms under a masterplan by MEDA Architects who have kindly specified Shiluvit panels. So far LSA Projects have supplied to almost 20 showrooms with many more to come.The specification for the Volvo showrooms is American Red Oak in the 7-501A format which has 20mm wide and 45mm deep blades at 50mm centres. This panel type allows for 60% open area meaning that installations with 20mm of LSA Black acoustic lining achieve acoustic class A; perfect for busy car showrooms and workshops.Each showroom uses Shiluvit panels as a feature above the main reception desk following through above the waiting areas, meeting rooms, and offices. The new washrooms feature our full height Alto toilet cubicles, specified with a real wood walnut veneer finish. We designed the bespoke white Corian trough-style vanity units with an integral handbag shelf, back-painted glass splashbacks and Tego hinged mirror units. In the basement staff shower and changing area, our SGL Forza lockers provide staff with a durable, secure storage facility.

Washroom's full height Alto toilet cubicles, faced in Formica F6209 Prestige Walnut Laminate, were finished with bespoke architectural pull handles in stainless-steel plus thumbturn mortice locks in the same finish. The shower and changing areas were fitted with bespoke Alto cubicles, large enough to accommodate both a shower and dry changing area. Each cubicle door was faced in FENIX NTM matt laminate in blue and completed with architectural door handles, thumbturn mortice locks and stealth self-closing pivot hinges.

Challenge:Driven by a respect for the environment, Heritage Homes wanted to create energy efficient homes for the future. A high sustainable build standard was required as part of their prestigious ‘Future Collection’ homes for the phase two zero carbon homes development.Solution:IG’s Hi-therm+ lintels use a patented combination of a polymer isolator and galvanised steel to bond the internal and external walls together by spanning the intervening gap creating a powerful thermal break. The one-piece lintel solution accommodated different lengths to minimise and conserve energy for each home by reducing thermal bridging at non-repeating junctions. IG’s technical team determined the loading and specification requirements at window and door openings. This fabric first approach contributed to an AA* energy efficiency rating and ensured each home built was comfortable, energy efficient and modern for years to come.IG’s LP windposts accommodated different lengths and factored into account wind load conditions. The windposts were installed into the inner skin of the cavity walls spanning vertically between the floor structures, providing additional lateral support for the large panels of brickwork and openings. Winslow’s brand new railway station has received a huge cycling boost after Falco manufactured and installed a series of 68 cycle parking spaces with associated cycle canopies this month.The new station is located on the western outskirts of the town, at the junction of Buckingham Road and is being built for Winslow as part of the East West Rail project, which is to re-establish the route between Oxford and Cambridge.As part of the new development, Falco installed a series of 68 spaces of the UK’s best-selling two-tier cycle rack, combined with 15m of the open and spacious FalcoRail cycle canopy, providing cycle-rail users with everything they might need as part of their daily commute.Two key products of the scheme are the tried and tested FalcoLevel-Premium+ two-tier cycle parking system and the EN 1090 FalcoRail cycle canopy, which have been used throughout the railway network to give cyclists using the railway the same experience across the region’s stations. The low-maintenance FSC and PEFC certified timber boards are crafted from slow-grown Vth grade European Redwood Pine.The overall finish looks the part, too, with the lodge decks blending in with the safari-themed wooden buildings. The double-storey elephant lodges are authentically styled, with thatched roofs, accommodating up to five people. They have large, open-plan living spaces with a lounge, dining area and kitchenette. The balcony with outdoor seating offers views to watch the elephants – Latabe, Five and Sutton – as they approach their pool.The two, single-storey, detached cheetah lodges can sleep up to six guests. The living spaces feature large windows spanning one side of the building, offering panoramic views of the cheetahs in their new habitat. For the new distribution centre at Schiphol Trade Park along the A4, living walls have been realised with MobiPanel, the living wall system from Mobilane. With a total surface spanning 750 m2, the facades of the new distribution centre is greened with the latest generation vertical green from Mobilane.Sustainable and innovative distribution centreA lot of attention has been paid to the appearance of the new distribution centre. With the design of Dedato Architecten, sustainability has not only been taken into account on the inside, but also sustainability at the outside of the building has been taken into consideration by including nature-inclusitivity. Dick Venneman, architect and owner of Dedato Architecten tells: “It is a building with its own characteristic appearance, a landmark from the highway. The building is in its materials friendly and accessible. The different surfaces in the facade gives it a human approach. The living walls and the vertically placed solar panels tells something about the sustainability of the building and plays a role in the preservation of biodiversity in the area”. In addition, the MobiPanel living walls makes the environment more sustainable and improves air quality. The installation of the living walls was carried out by Mobicare in collaboration with Zoontjens Boomprojecten. In addition to the living walls, Zoontjens also installed two large roof gardens with various trees, shrubs and 2,600 MobiRoof ECO sedum cassettes totalling 650 square metres.Distribution centre 2.0 Schiphol Trade ParkThe building spans 30.000 m2 of which 3000 m2 is available for offices. Under the distribution centre, there is a car park spanning 7500 m2 with space for 270 cars. The construction of the new distribution centre began in 2020 and is delivered by Dijkham Bouw BV. “From the environment, wellbeing and to prevent a paved environment, for the design it has been chosen to implement living walls, green roofs and ground level. We are very satisfied about this procedure. The execution is very good, the communication was good”, according to Marcel Smeets – Coordinator at Dijkham Bouw BV. The distribution centre was developed by Minerva Development. Minerva Development is an independent developer with years of experience in the development and realisation of business premises. “Since Schiphol Trade Park has set the goal of becoming one the most sustainable logistics centre, as developers we were very happy to take on the challenge. Next to all other facilities such as solar panels, we have opted for a lot of greenery in the design. Not only on the facades, but also in the surroundings of the building and on the roof. We are very happy with the end result and proud of the fact that because of the living walls, this is by far the most beautiful DC in the area. We are very curious about what the result will be over a few months when everything is in bloom”, Bob Lukassen – Minerva Development.Latest generation vertical greenFor greening the distribution, it was chosen for the new living wall system MobiPanel from Mobilane. MobiPanel is an innovative, sustainable and lightweight system for living walls. It is a modular and circular system consisting of omega profiles and pregrown plant cassettes (40 x 40 cm), provided with an automatic irrigation and drainage system. The plants in the cassettes receive water through capillary action. MobiPanel can be installed on flat or curved walls and is suitable for different types of walls, including certain types of sandwich panels. For the facades of the new distribution centre, sandwich panels from Cladding Point have been used. “With Mobilane, as a global expert with many years of experience, we can continue to lead the way in innovation and sustainability.
