he BriefAddenbrooke’s Hospital in Cambridgeshire were looking for a wall mounted canopy to provide shade and shelter over the main entrance of their Accident and Emergency department. At the time of enquiry, they didn’t have any form of shelter over the entrance and patients and visitors were exposed to the elements when queuing or waiting outside.Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust’s Project Manager came to Able Canopies for a quotation in hope that we could offer a product that met their design needs, whilst providing the weather protection required. The canopy specification presented to Able Canopies was a wall mounted canopy with a polycarbonate roof and toughened glass or polycarbonate front panels.

TVS Group was tasked with the isolation of a residential property in St. John’s Wood as part of a redevelopment and basement extension. With the property in close proximity to the Jubilee line and the Metropolitan line passing only 5m away from the new basement extension, radiated noise and vibration was a serious concern for the client.An isolation layer utilising varying stiffnesses of Sylomer materials spanned the underside of the basement slab, continued up between the contiguous piled wall and the lining wall, and then across the top of the capping beam and to the side of the ground floor slab.Close work with the design team throughout the planning and specification process, provided a solution that integrated seamlessly with the structure and waterproofing detail.

Ayrshire College Main HallArchitect: Keppie DesignInstaller: DV McCollProduct: Shiluvit by Oranit250m2 of Shiluvit panels in 7-501A formation and Western Red Cedar were installed to the impressive wrap over wall and ceiling space at Ayrshire College in Scotland.Shiluvit panels were chosen in part for their ability to easily incorporate lighting and ventilation into the ceiling whilst also giving ease of access with the tip-and-tilt demountable design.In addition the Western Red Cedar chosen has significant natural colour and texture variation which gives the vast ceiling and wall space extra depth as well as a creative and bespoke feel.

Washroom's Forza SGL lockers and Legato benches combine to create a colourful new changing area for an office cycle centre. The Forza lockers, fitted with key operated locks, were specified with doors in HPL using four different colours from Sonae to create the distinctive eye-catching design. The changing area also features freestanding island Legato bench units manufactured with solid grade laminate slats and back rest plus wall-mounted Legato benching units in the combined changing and shower cubicles. Washroom's Arpeggio Corian trough-style vanity in white feature inset square sinks, integrated waste bins and wall-mounted taps.

The Priscilla Bacon Lodge in Norfolk is a new £12.5 million hospice that will provide state-of-the-art palliative care for 24 patients alongside day care facilities, a wellness centre, gym and community hub for those being cared for at home. It will also be used for education and research into palliative and end-of-life care. The facility, designed by LSI Architects and delivered by Morgan Sindall Construction, features both traditional masonry cavity walls, and a masonry rainscreen façade.  Meeting the brief At just two stories high, the building doesn’t fall under building regulations that ban combustible materials in the wall build-up. But even so, combustibility was a key factor when it came to specifying the insulation. Jordan Armstrong, Associate at LSI Architects explained: “As a practice we always try to minimise fire risk, especially for a project like The Priscilla Bacon Lodge, which will house extremely vulnerable people. So, it was essential that the materials we used were non-combustible, which meant mineral wool insulation was the only solution. “We regularly use Knauf Insulation products, so we specified DriTherm® Cavity Slab 32 for the cavity walls because it’s a high-performing glass mineral wool insulation that we expected could meet our required 0.16 W/m2K U-value. We were also keen to specify their Rocksilk® RainScreen Slab for partially filled cavity walls because then we would have one manufacturer for the whole build, and we think the products will work well together.” DriTherm® Cavity Slab 32 is full-fill insulation solution with a thermal conductivity of 0.032W/mK. While Rocksilk® RainScreen Slab for partially filled cavity walls is a rock mineral wool product with a thermal conductivity of 0.034W/mK. Both products are BBA certified for the application. In addition to non-combustibility and thermal performance, both products also offer sound reduction characteristics. Ease of installation Both DriTherm® Cavity Slab 32 and Rocksilk® RainScreen Slab contain a water repellent additive that preserves the integrity of the slabs while they are exposed during construction.  The products are also designed to be easy to install correctly. They are sized to suit standard centres for installation between wall ties or brick restraint systems. Slabs are robust so they can be manoeuvred into place while maintaining the flexibility required to adapt to minor imperfections in the substrate to prevent gaps that reduce thermal, fire and acoustic performance.  Lastly, they are both manufactured using ECOSE® Technology, Knauf Insulation’s unique bio-based binder, which contains no added formaldehyde or phenol. It is made from natural raw materials that are rapidly renewable, and is 70% less energy-intensive to manufacture than traditional binders, so it is more environmentally friendly. The product is soft to touch, easy to handle, and generates low levels of dust and VOCs. So, when it came to specifying the insulation for the Priscilla Bacon Lodge, Knauf Insulation’s DriTherm® Cavity Slab 32 and Rocksilk® RainScreen Slab for partially filled cavity walls ticked all the boxes. 

The Fforestfach site is a busy passenger transport depot for the Local Authority, managed by the Place Directorate, serving a variety of users. Severely weathered and corroded, the original 1,800 sqm roof on the depot comprised of old asbestos corrugated sheets that had degraded over the years, to the point that heavy rain resulted in overflowing gutters and severe internal leaks to the building. Garland UK Technical Manager, Dale Thomas, was asked by the Swansea Councils Property Maintenance team to carry out a full detailed roof survey and specify a waterproofing solution that would overcome the existing asbestos challenges of the depot roof and upgrade the external site offices, whilst minimising any disruption to the daily operations of the active depot.

The Living Planet Centre is WWF’s brand-new purpose-built head office in Woking. Hopkins Architects and Willmott Dixon asked Planet to provide specification for internal glass partitions in this two-storey 3,666 sqm building. For the meeting rooms, Planet Partitioning installed an electronic room booking system within p100 partitioning, so staff can book meeting rooms. For all the meeting rooms, remote controlled integrated venetian blinds allow additional privacy as required. p100 also ensures all meeting rooms meet high acoustic performance requirements. Planet Partitioning also installed FireStop fire-rated glass partitioning to meet fire regulations throughout the building.

The Hard Rock hotels are an iconic music brand with an international presence.During the refurbishment of their retail premises in Great Cumberland Place, London they approached ASH to design a handle that reflected the values synonymous with their music brand and could be placed throughout the hotel.During the briefing session their iconic music associations and guitars were chosen as a product that many people identified with and was a design that could be practically developed into an entrance handle and handles throughout that kept it’s original design qualities whilst remaining practical and functional.Following the initial briefing ASH worked to develop the design for their new pull door handles, informing the client throughout the design process and providing technical drawings for the client’s interior designers.

Covering an area of nearly two acres (7,600 m2), the Holt Farm dairy complex includes two large and three smaller cattle buildings used for milking, housing, feed storage, offices, and viewing gallery. The complex typically houses 240 dairy cattle, yielding an average of 7,500 litres per year that is supplied to a nearby dairy processing facility. Holt Farm’s dairy complex is L-shaped with five interconnecting ridge-roofed buildings that create four internal valley gutters. The original fibre cement roof with badly yellowing old-style roof lights had deteriorated and suffered storm damage; the owners decided that a cost-effective new roof was required.

Fashion retailer Schustermann & Borenstein GmbH offers a unique selection ofrenowned national and international designer brands all over Europe. With risingsales in 27 countries, made almost exclusively via the internet, the company hassimply outgrown its current premises, and had to look at expanding its facilitiesto cope with future growth. BestSecret, the company‘s E-commerce subsidiary,in particular is in need of larger premises, with continual need to grow andexpand their facilities to cope with growing customer demand. For this reason,the company made the decision to relocate its headquarters to the newlydeveloped commercial district of Grub in Poing near Munich, and build newadministrative offices with adjoining logistics centre.

Lionweld Kennedy supplied and installed both open mesh flooring and GRP light out removeable handrails to 4 twin level access gantries at the 'Doncaster Carr IEP Depot' for Hitachi Rail Group.We supplied and fixed demarcation fencing with integral gates to form the stores area within the facility.Also, we supplied and fixed internal depot protection to fork lift routes, including column protection, bollards and spring steel barrier systems.Using both steel open mesh flooring and GRP handrails was a great cost solution for the client, as we were able to utalise our products to create a safe working environment which is fully compliant with British and European standards.

When the quiet areas are people sleeping and the noisy area is a busy hotel dining room, the problem is particularly acute, but can be resolved by using the appropriate products which are cost effective and easy to install correctly.The ProjectPremier Inn Scarborough North is a new build 105 room, 5-storey hotel with a 68-cover restaurant, which was completed in March 2021. The new hotel was granted planning permission in 2018 and construction was slightly delayed over the Covid lockdown period.Owner of the Premier Inn brand, Whitbread, continues to see strong growth with their UK business continuing to outperform in the midscale and economy market and now has over 800 hotels in the UK. Key to the brand’s message is that wherever you stay in a Premier Inn, you will always get great levels of comfort.The ChallengeSources of noise which affect hotel guests include:External sources of noise and vibrationTransmission between rooms and between rooms and corridorsTransmission from engineering systems (ventilation and air conditioning, heating systems, lifts and so on)Transmission from public areas – reception, conference facilities and in particular restaurants.Noise transmission from restaurants, bars and reception areas becomes a significant challenge where the design of the hotel incorporates these areas on the ground floor of a block, with hotel rooms directly above.Reducing the transmission of noise from a large common area to individual hotel rooms rests principally on isolating the plasterboard or suspended ceiling. To overcome this challenge, a frequent recommendation is to design a ceiling incorporating neoprene isolation hangers.Neoprene Isolation Hangers for HotelsNeoprene isolation hangers are primarily used to isolate suspended sources of audible frequency vibration, such as piping and ductwork systems. The creation of this new store for supermarket chain Lidl is a part of the larger residential led mixed-use Waterline development which has seen the creation of a striking 27 storey residential tower block providing 251 new homes in Wembley, London.Formerly known as Minavil House, the demolition of the derelict commercial building has provided ample scope for the regeneration of the wider area and the new mixed use scheme provides a variety of facilities including retail and office space.The ground floor level supermarket has been designed to complement the main buildings whilst providing a practical solution for a high traffic retail space.Our SF52 aluminium curtain wall has been used to great effect on the main façade of the store, with feature fins and sloped glazing elements. To provide safe and secure access, and help reduce maintenance requirements, our robust SPW501 aluminium commercial doors were also installed by our supply chain partner Soundcraft. Designed by Alan Camp Architects, the Waterline development has been built by HG Construction.As well as adding to Senior’s order book in London and the South East, the creation of the new Lidl supermarket also draws on our expertise of delivering curtain wall and commercial door solutions for the retail sector. The thermal efficiency of our slim line SF52 aluminium curtain wall system makes it ideally suited to reducing the environmental impact of retail buildings, by meeting the requirements of Part L, and also maximising the use of natural light. In fact, our SF52 aluminium curtain wall system made its debut on the flagship Sainsbury’s superstore in Sheffield.

The Pôle d`Échange Serra is located directly opposite the Luxexpo exhibition and congress centre in Kirchberg, Luxembourg. The area combines a new bus terminal regional buses and city buses, a Park & Ride car park with around 600 parking spaces and two office buildings with a total area of approx. 8,000 m². With the help of charging points for electric cars, a small kiosk and high security measures at the bus station, the project aims to make the switch from car to public transport more attractive. Lindner Group was involved in the development of the office space. The originalcontract covered the floor and partition trades, including the installation of the NORTEC raised floor with fitted carpet and the use of timber and glass partitions. These were complemented by matching door systems and wooden wall claddings. Due to thecustomer's high level of satisfaction with Lindner's services, the order was quickly extended during the interior fit-out work: As a result, Lindner realised impressive Ecophon acoustic baffles for the meeting rooms. In addition, mobile partition walls should now find their way into the 4th and 7th floors. The room height of over 5 m on the 7th floor made the installation challenging: However, thanks to the static design and subsequent execution of a steel construction clad with plaster, the connection of the 4m high partition wall could be carried out without any problems. Another highlight of the interior fit-out are the wall absorbers in the meeting rooms, which also serve as acoustic pictures. The perforated CPL panel was created in cooperation with Topakustik using a new production method. The perforation pattern corresponds to a Morse code, which stands for the Luxembourg national anthem.

TK-Team were asked to help with reverberation issues in a room used for VC. Below are comments made by Kevin Close of Hull University.With more and more meetings being scheduled online since the pandemic, we had a request to enable a meeting room with video conference facilities. One thing that was immediately noticed, post install, was that people at the far end we’re having issues hearing people in the meeting room due to the acoustics in the room. The configuration of the room with flat solid walls, ceiling and whiteboards meant this space had a lot of reverb/echo. After some thought, it was obvious acoustic treatment was required in the space, we consulted with GVAV who offered us some solutions, we then spoke in depth with Lee from TK-Team who visited us and surveyed the room. Lee identified the main issue being reflection from the ceiling and explained that is where we should start. TK-Team worked with us and designed us a tailor-made solution for the room using Hush Acoustic ceiling tiles, all in our choice of colours and shapes, the solution was procured via GVAV and installation was very smooth and finished in a timely manner.The acoustic quality of the room, not just for local meetings but for remote participants was vastly improved. The difference in the room has been described as ‘staggering’. As such, this is now a heavily used meeting space and has highlighted the advantages of looking at and dealing with acoustic issues within meeting spaces on campus going forward.Kev Close

Sensitively restored, the interiors boast rich textural finishes and materials for a classic feel with a witty dash of modernism.Majestic were invited to supply Monaco, Rio and Portofino screens from The Frameless Portfolio with component finishes in matt white, matt black and brushed and polished chrome.

The Cambridge University Faculty of History required a solution to level the existing flat roofs of the historical Stirling Building. The aim was to create a vibrant and attractive area, mainly used as a throughway, it was paramount that the tiles would match the existing colour of the surrounding building.Our Castlepave GRC Promenade slab (450x450x38mm) was selected, and a custom-made colour was created to blend effectively into the existing architecture. We manufactured various test batches each with a different shade of red, and hand finished aged effect. Once the colour was selected from the various test batches, they were manufactured by hand to the customers specification and delivered to site.We assessed the fall and height tolerances of the roof to determine the number and size of pedestals required to provide a completely level finish. Adjustable Pedestals ranging from 30-120mm,10mm fixed height stackable pedestals, levelling shims, and self-levelling heads were used.The outer row of slabs was cut to size on site, using a circular saw. As shown the results are a flush finish that minimizes the gaps between the slabs and the exterior perimeter. The glass reinforced concrete composition of the slabs mean they are strong and easy to work with on site.The Client was very happy with this stylish and unique finish.

Studio facilities for a community of hardworking contemporary artists need to be durable and easy to maintain yet aesthetically pleasing, so architects Caruso St John specified made-to-measure stainless steel sinktops from GEC Anderson as part of the £2.25 million redevelopment of the Spike Island art complex on Bristol’s harbourside. GEC Anderson stainless steel sinktops were also specified for the IT suite tea-point, artists’ and visitors’ toilets and baby-change areas. Spike Island, a former tea packing warehouse, has housed local artists’ studios since the 1990s when it replaced the earlier Artspace venture. It has grown to become a national centre for the research and development of contemporary visual arts – including painting, sculpture and print-making – with 70 affordable long-let studios and a series of spaces for more commercial cultural industries, such as design studios. The redevelopment, just completed, includes a welcoming entrance, while the new café is Spike Island’s first shared social space. In addition, studio spaces have been improved and the vast exhibition galleries are among the UK’s most impressive. Caruso St John project architect Rod Heyes says: “When it came to specifying the big washing out sinks, we needed something reliable that would still clean up and look good after the artists had poured plaster, paint and various chemicals over them. We have used GEC Anderson products on several other projects and they are our default supplier for stainless steel. We are impressed by the quality of their products as well as their design detailing.”GEC Anderson Managing Director Martin Tye says “Quality stainless steel is a highly versatile material that can be deployed very effectively in applications across the spectrum from workshops to designer kitchens. Stainless steel is also ultimately durable and hygienic. “Spike Island may prove to be one of the tougher environments for GEC Anderson sinks, but with a modest amount of care these sinktops will still perform well and look good after many years.”With creativity uppermost in the minds of Spike Island’s tenants, their surrounding facilities and those also provided for the visiting public were selected for functionality, aesthetics and durability. The Spike Island specification includes made-to-measure stainless steel sinktops all with integrally welded bowls. Within the metal work space, extra large Le70 (700 x 500 x 300mm) bowls, were specified. The baby-change area includes an 800mm wide surface. All sinktops are made from satin finish domestic grade stainless steel.

The Chesterfield Nuffield Health Hospital, Bristol commissioned Intastop Ltd after its walls in theatre corridors and waiting areas were suffering from high levels of unsightly and unhygienic impact damage.

Specified at the design stage Bioclad’s white antimicrobial PVC system along with BioArmis wall protection including bump rails and corner guards were installed through-out this recent healthcare scheme.

In this wooden building in the center of Vienna, the walls, ceilings and floors are made from solid wood(CLT). The construction protection covering and sealing for the individual elements were achieved with the SIGA products Wetguard and Rissan.

Five years on from completion, no repairs have been required for any damage to the Academy's partitions or wall linings. The contractor used Siniat LaDura, a hard wearing board for its corridors and classrooms.

After embarking on a project to create high quality new learning pods to enhance its facilities, the last thing teachers, staff and children at Carr Lodge Academy in Doncaster were expecting was for excessive background noise to be so much of an issue that it stood in the way of their ability to use and enjoy them.The school wanted to create learning pods for each of its 1-6 year groups to provide a facility that could be used for extra learning, small group teaching or a break-out space for teachers and children. The building contractor appointed to construct the pods worked to an agreed specification and design, but the acoustic conditions that would result from the proposed usage of the spaces, the positioning of the pods and choice of materials for their fit-out was not fully realised. It was only when teachers and staff started using the learning pods that problems with echo and excessive sound reverberation were fully realised. This is a common acoustic issue which results from interiors that feature lots of hard, harsh reflective surfaces with the ultimate impact at Carr Lodge being that the pods were unsuitable for their purpose.The school sought specialist assistance to resolve the issues which started with an acoustic assessment and detailed acoustic report. And following a competitive tendering process, Hush Acoustics was appointed to complete the acoustic upgrade using its sound absorber panels.How absorption resolved the issueThe solution involved manufacturing and installing a series of Hush Absorber 50 panels which were strategically mounted on the walls of the learning pods. The Class A absorber panels are formulated using a 50mm thick acoustic foam which is hand finished in a high quality fabric applied on the face, edges and back – at Carr Lodge, the panels feature a green fabric to match the school’s aesthetics and contribute to the welcoming environment.Various sizes of panels were installed to fit the differing sized spaces within the school. Their positioning was dependent on the size and the layout of the learning pod for the year group. Some year group pods, for example, feature desks, so absorber panels have been installed to be continuous along the desk line, helping the children hear what is being said by teachers. THE PROJECTThe Royal Mail Pigeon Hole Boxes project uses a large bank of through the wall mailboxes that used a securely front panel on the box along with a open rear that allows for easy retrieval of the posted mail. These pigeon holes are built through a panel and access to the rear of the boxes is only available to security-approved personnel. Global engineering consultancy, WSP, recently relocated 850 Manchester-based staff to new offices situated in the prestigious, No8 First Street building. The refurbished office space focuses on the wellbeing of employees, creating relaxing spaces where they can unwind and spend time with colleagues. Contributing to this positive lifestyle environment, Style installed two DORMA Varitrans glass moveable walls, effectively separating breakout areas and creating either two smaller rooms or one large open plan space. A further eight DORMA Variflex, fully automatic moveable walls were installed across two other floors, allowing WSP to create three larger meeting rooms or seven smaller ones.
