One of the first of its kind, the Floating Home can lead the way in this new innovative and sustainable style of living. The solution that was provided was the intelligent and innovative GlassLine system by Undrain.

We supplied our ASF 650 trough for this project in the centre of Leeds. The bollards were the standard product with no additional engineering for specific loading, but utilised our lid system which itself withstands over 8000kg spread load. The standard ASF 650 trough bollard is a steel trough with a reinforced durbar lid, finished galvanised, and hosting a 1000mm high, 101mm diameter stainless steel bollard.These bollards were used in a tunnelled area and had additional black reflective band.

J&P was involved early in discussions with several members of the project team, and using its BEAMCON product, provided a coordinated and value-engineered range of solutions to the multiple fixing requirements on the project. These included brackets that could take vertical shear loads of 72 kN, horizontal shear of 270 kN, tension of 495 kN and a moment of 25 kNm. BEAMCON was used to fix the innovative ETFE cladding “cushions” which give The SSE Hydro its distinctive appearance.

Handyside is a compact, contemporary space that comprises a children’s play area for families to enjoy. The pathways were created with curved plant and tree beds, defined with Perimeta HiGrade Bespoke organic shaped raised planters in CorTen steel. The landscape also called for a steel planter system that could accommodate varying heights. The Kinley team worked closely with Townshend Landscape Architects right from the concept stages of the ambitious design to engineer a planter system that created and enhanced the vision.

Naylor Concrete Ltd supplied Ultrafire and HiSpec Lintels to the Rolls-Royce project in Washington. Miller Construction has landed the contract to build a multi-million pound Rolls-Royce factory in Sunderland. The 20,000m2 facility, at Washington’s Radial Business Park, will manufacture fan and turbine discs for jet engines and is expected to be ready for production to start late next year. The construction contract, thought to be worth £35m, is part of a £950m five-year-investment programme on the part of the company.

Wakefield has had a sporting boost with the construction of its new Minsthorpe Leisure Centre which was opened February 2018, after the 14-month project was completed on schedule. Facilities at the centre include a 25m, six-lane swimming pool, a 60-station health and fitness club and a group exercise studio.The project cladding design underwent a value engineering programme and the originally specified product was changed to include our Trimapanel® smooth faced insulated panels for the external building envelope.

Bloomberg’s European Headquarters opened with excitement in October 2017. The marquee building in the heart of London provides new office space for Bloomberg’s 4000 London based employees. We installed over 37,000m2 of Kingspan raised access flooring and 34,000m2 of Kingspan Attiro real wood engineered floor. The combined systems allow quick and easy access to the steel encapsulated floor panels and the underfloor void whilst delivering 98.5% score against the BREEAM sustainability assessment method.

The ChallengeFailing retaining wall needed to be stabilised and strengthened.The failing masonry wall, to the rear of Latches Close Social Housing, was braced with timber struts and remained like this for 10 years. The ‘temporary’ buttress was effective for a short time but then the wall began to move. The brick retaining wall had fractured at the corner which was a sign it was slowly inching forward. For fear of the wall’s collapse, the surrounding area was cordoned off with heras fencing. For health and safety reasons, the rear of the social housing was completely ‘out of bounds’.The wall couldn’t be taken down and replaced because there was a car sales elevated above. The car sales proprietor did not want his land to be affected. Clarion Housing Group contacted Engie to survey the failing wall and propose a solution. The SolutionSecura Grand was installed under the expert advice of Tobermore’s Civil Engineering Consultants.Engie had previously worked with Tobermore on other schemes and had experience using their Secura Grand Retaining Wall system. Following consultations with Tobermore’s Civil Engineering Consultants, Engie proposed Secura Grand as a solution to strengthen and stabilise the existing wall.Rather than replacing the entire wall, the existing wall and its timber buttress was incorporated into the retaining wall designs. This retaining wall project has restored land for the residents and property managers.

BACKGROUNDT-Squared were selected by Oxford Nanopore Technologies as Main Contractor for their new cleanroom production facility on the prestigious Harwell Campus. The production cleanrooms had to be ultra-clean to manufacture DNA/RNA sequencing devices.BRIEFThe production cleanrooms for the sequencing devices required ISO 4 & 7 Classifications and had to meet the stringent requirements for their specialist manufacturing process which are aligned with semiconductor processing. Due to the high level of process services required and strict operating conditions, the cleanroom had to support the specialist services and HVAC solutions to meet the critical operating parameters and production processes.SOLUTIONMIDDAS designed, manufactured, and installed structural cleanrooms from their proven M100/M200 range and specialist M-WOC walk-on ceiling with plenum cap. The M100/M200 framework was engineered to support the sensible cooling coils and HVAC supplies, along with the process utilities used within the facility. The cleanroom wall panels could also be removed to access the services throughout the life of the facility and had inert aluminium cores to ensure the cleanroom classifications were met. A unique feature of the MIDDAS solution was the plenum cap, designed and engineered to support the fan filter ceiling below. Integrated handrails to the walk-on ceilings also ensured a safe maintenance platform.

The smooth finish of the brick gives a modern appearance to the houses.Additionally, Homepave Cobble Paving was selected for the walkways and garden of the new development. The innovative design of the Museum of the Second World War in Gdansk, Poland, was achieved with the use of cutting-edge construction solutions, including a glass ceiling. Vetrotech Saint Gobain has always lived up to the expectations of architects and engineers in terms of innovative aesthetics. These principles were also followed in this case where several hundred m² of glass ceiling can endure the load of 5 kN/m2 while offering uncompromised fire-resistance. Thermal insulation ensures that the ceiling’s characteristics remain unaltered regardless of the weather conditions.

Arup is an independent firm of designers, planners, engineers, consultants and technical specialists. It has participated in projects in over 160 countries, including some of the most prestigious architectural structures in the world, such as the Sydney Opera House, the Centre Pompidou in Paris, and the 2012 London Olympics. The majority of new and existing buildings require safe access to the roof area for ongoing building maintenance and to service specialist equipment. Arup regularly advises its clients on fall protection systems for this, and by working with MSA, they are able to meet the various requirements needed for their clients.

Since 201, CAST in Morpeth, Northumberland, train 350 students a year in all aspects of performing arts. Their studios are equipped with over 130 square meters of Harlequin Flexity sprung panels with Harlequin Fiesta and Harlequin Engineered Oak. ‘Ever since training at Italia Conti and rehearsing in and around London, my favorite studios and performance spaces to work in were all kitted out by Harlequin! I knew I had to have Harlequin supply and install the mirrors, barres and flooring in my own performing arts school.’

Verde is situated on the junction of Pitt Street and Wellington Street in Newcastle. Comprising of two buildings forming a V-shape, the facade runs parallel to both streets. These two structures are clad in green glazed terracotta tile laid horizontally across both buildings with a selection of projecting tiles to create a sense of movement and signalling the entrance to the development. For the glazing specification, the building was thermally modelled as part of the Part L Assessment with performance requirements for the windows generated by its outcomes and outlined by the projects building services engineer.

UltraScape Pro-Bed HS, Pro-Prime and Flowpoint ECO are being used to help make Bradford’s City Park a world class public park. Bradford Council, in conjunction with landscape architect Gillespies and consulting engineer Arup, have specified UltraScape’s Pro-Bed HS Bedding Mortar, Pro-Prime Slurry Primer, EP-R9 Epoxy Bedding Mortar and Flowpoint ECO flowable grout – in Natural and Charcoal – for use by the main contractor Birse Civils, to lay the setts, porphyry and sandstone in and around the Mirror Pool.

We developed a value engineered wood floor and advised on the subfloor build up and installation. The product they have chosen was developed from samples we supplied to the designers at Canary Wharf. From a lot of experimentation with fumed boards that were unfinished we ended up with the colour and finish the client wanted. We then manufactured a batch for approval which was signed off for Newfoundland Tower. This case study shows how flexible we are and that we can accommodate any requirement where clients are looking for unique floors.

The O2 arena's roof needed state-of-the-art acoustic engineering to eliminate virtually all nuisance ambient noise (bass thumping) outside the arena contributing to fantastic acoustics inside the structure.The complex roof design featured several layers of different density barrier materials to deaden even the lowest bass frequencies, all carried on special acoustic deck structures. The structural deck troughs were filled with ROCKWOOL RW4 insulation, with ROCKWOOL Acoustic membrane over and a 50mm Rigidal intermediate deck.

ASSA ABLOY Entrance Systems' expertise in transportation applications made us an ideal partner for the Doncaster Transport Interchange project. In working together with the project’s engineers, automatic sliding door systems were determined to be the optimal solution for the bus depot due their reliability and safety. The clean lines of the ASSA ABLOY sliding doors also complemented other elements of the broader French gate Centre urban renewal project, which includes an integrated train station and car park for visitors to the nearby city centre, in addition to the shopping mall.

The Alder Hey Children’s Hospital won the Prime Minister’s Better Public Building award at the 2016 British Construction Awards. This building was designed to provide the best quality of healthcare possible in an environment that will develop the recovery process of patients. Costing over £250 million and named the ‘hospital under the hill’, it is designed to blend into the current environment and landscape incorporating grass from Springfield park in Liverpool curving up and over the building. This project was a connection of architecture and engineering to produce a natural and calming environment for the children and families.

The design and engineering of British Airways i360 is as impressive as it is innovative. Such an innovative attraction needs to stay attractive whilst maintaining safety of its tourists. Described by Dezer Developments and the Porsche Design Group as ‘engineered luxury’, the $560 million Porsche Design Tower is a 57 storey ultra-luxury structure occupying 2.2 acres (8,900 m2) of beachfront land on Collins Avenue in Sunny Isles Beach, Florida. Canal Architectural were approached to design a bespoke staircase for the homeowner of a luxury apartment in the Liverpool area. The property owner worked closely with the Canal technical sales team to design a contemporary staircase that provided access to the upper balcony area of the apartment. The final result was the design and supply of a minimalist Cantilever staircase. The intelligent piece of engineering anchored in at only one end, allowing the the protruding construction to overhang. Finally, dark stained oak treads were added to the Cantilever structure in line with latest design trends of natural and urban finishes.

Situated in the heart of Coventry and clad in Traditional Textures precoated aluminium using an angled standing seam. The colour Blue Zinc Patina captures the colour, tone and textures of real pigmented zinc at a fraction of the cost. The range of pre-coated Aluminium come in a wide variety of surface finishes with a warranty of up to 20 years. Aluminium is lightweight, offers a flat surface aesthetic. Ease of handling and excellent formability even in low temperature conditions make it an installers favourite. Commissioned on this project as a Value Engineered solution

In 2017 permission was granted for the re-devlopment of an abandoned mill in Holmfirth into a cookery school and restaurant. The design required the car park to look as natural as possible but to withstand the manoeuvring of large delivery vehicles. ABG offered a re-engineered solution showing that a porous type 3 attenuation stone over the whole car park removed the need for expensive attenuation tanks. The main car park was covered in Sudspave interlocking pavers coloured to match the gravel. Truckcell was used for the turning area and filled with the same gravel for a natural finish.

Client: Highways Agency, England, with Northampton CC Main Contractor: Balfour Beatty Main Products Used: Emseal BEJSEmseal BEJS used to seal Parapet & Wing wall joints on the new A45 Dodsmoor Bridge in Northamptonshire:This new bridge forms part of the A45 Daventry Link Road at Dodmoor in Northampton, where the wing-wall joints and the parapet joints with the precast elements provided a challenge for the engineers. These joints had to be able to accommodate the anticipated high levels of movement, but the site measured widths of the joints varied from around 25-30mm up to around 100mm. The potential movement, including movement in different planes, their variable form and dimensions, were too much for any ‘normal’ preformed joints, or extruded, gun-applied, so-called ‘mastic’ joint sealants to be used. This is clearly evidenced in the inset picture, where the specified extruded sealant was already seen to be failing under this loading. Additionally, the wing-wall joints were to be back-filled with a watertight seal. Following previous experience with difficult and complex movement jointing requirements, the Balfour Beatty engineers discussed the situation with NCC and the Emseal BEJS System was identified as an ideal solution. Emseal BEJS is available in different widths that can also be precompressed further for ease of installation, it is fast and easy to install, plus importantly requires no invasive mechanical fixings.

Glasgow’s latest redevelopment project, located on Langside Road, is built upon the former site of the city’s Victoria Infirmary and consists of a large housing development that includes 413 flats, offices and retail space. The 3.75 hectare site, which is situated next to Queen’s Park on the south side of the city, forms an important part of the Battlefield area’s character, with the buildings’ exterior reflecting and complementing the surrounding heritage by using the city's traditional blonde coloured sandstone.  As part of the construction process, Bilco UK was commissioned to supply six ESW-50REM Smoke Vents, in addition to seven E-50TB Roof Access Hatches, to provide the highest standards of safety and efficiency, whilst being sympathetic to the project’s overall design.  Installed onto the roof areas of four blocks of flats by Scottish contractors, Procladd Small Works Ltd, Bilco UK’s ESW-50REM Smoke Vents were specified to provide essential ventilation in the event of a building fire. Featuring a linear actuator operating mechanism that opens the cover to 140 degrees within 60 seconds, the smoke vents ensure compliance with Building Regulations Approved Document B, BS9999 and EN12101-2.  The built-in wind deflector also provides protection against smoke being blown back into the vent in the event of a fire., whilst the newly-designed closed-cell EPDM sponge gasket helps meet Building Regulation air leakage targets by providing a better seal of the cover to the curb. Whites Concrete has supplied a pre-cast concrete chamber for an 11-tonne Archimedean screw turbine installed on the banks of the River Esk in Whitby, North Yorkshire by national engineering and construction company JN Bentley. The Whites Concrete chamber has been constructed using robust Groundwall L-shaped units, to house the 2.9m diameter screw turbine. The latter will operate with up to 4 cumec with a rated capacity of 51.6KW as it generates electricity for Esk Energy (Yorkshire). Esk Energy secured funding towards the cost of the project through a community share issue.

Surespan has manufactured and supplied a large access hatch in the engine house of Heathrow Airport’s new terminal five. The three-leaf hatch – which measures 6 x 3 metres – can take up to 5kN/m² loading. It has an electric actuator opening which can be activated remotely and is fire rated for up to two hours. Bill Burke, Contracts Manager at Heathrow Airport said: “We were very impressed with Surespan’s proactive approach throughout the whole project. The hatch has been well received by the authorities at Heathrow”

ASF worked closely with the architect to develop a 'whole material solution' for what started as an open spec project. The brief was to produce a single material and very high quality street furniture package that complimented but did not dominate the market square. It was decided that LG2 Aluminium Bronze would be used. In this material ASF produced bespoke cycle stands, feature paving strips, a feature paving tree surround and bollards as well as step units to properties surrounding the square. Feature products were all sand cast and above ground externals machine engineered.
