Record U.K. Limited

BMW Hollenstein in Aesch near Basel fully utilizes innovative technology. Completed in 2012, the operations centre uses only pioneering, sustainable infrastructure. The fully electric powered BMW models i3 and i8 are recharged at a special station prominently situated by the entrance. The electricity comes from a powerful solar energy plant located on the top of the roof. Any surplus electricity is fed back into the grid.Little wonder, then, that only doors of usual design and construction were suitable for a building such as this. Again, innovation has found its way here too, enabling us to build one of Switzerland’s first record THERMCORD systems into the entrance porch.www.hollensteinag.com/rundgang

Originally erected quickly by Canadian troops in 1945, in support of the liberation of the Netherlands, the structure is still sound today. It represents a landmark erection for the Dutch galvanizing industry. Most importantly, on a recent visit to inspect the structure, it was noted that the steel itself had not been affected anywhere, despite a higher level of sulphurous pollution in earlier years. Today, the low sulphur dioxide content of the local atmosphere means that predictions on anticipated lifespan can be extended several times over what was initially foreseen upon installation.

With GEZE’s unique, robust locking system that is hidden from view – the Slimdrive SL NT PAS 24 System makes it even harder for opportunist burglars to identify points of access.GEZE’s proven Slimdrive SL NT technology, together with the enhanced security testing required to achieve PAS 24 accreditation, adds up to the perfect entrance system with no compromises - security, accessibility, access control and great aesthetics.Under PAS 24 a series of tests are performed including manual attack, in which the test engineer uses a range of tools anywhere on the door over a 15-minute period, impact testing of both ‘soft body’ and ‘hard body’ objects, and force testing in which loads are applied for up to 5 minutes. The door must withstand all of the tests to pass and achieve PAS 24 certification. These security enhancements are fast becoming key features for buildings where security with escape routes are a high priority: such as hospitals, airports, train stations and banks. The system uses GEZE’s proven Slimdrive SL NT automatic sliding operator. At just seven centimetres it is the slimmest on the market enabling it to be almost invisibly integrated into the façade. It can move leaf weights up to 125kg and is virtually silent in operation. GEZE UK worked with Jack Aluminium Systems, one of the UK’s leading aluminium glazing systems companies, to develop the new system for automatic sliding doors. The PAS (Product Assessment Specification) 24 test standard was introduced by the British Standard Institute (BSI) in collaboration with industry stakeholders and Secured By Design (SBD). Ahl Masr Hospital, New Cairo - F. Ball chosen for Cairo Hospital Installation

Ball, F and Co Ltd

A high-performance levelling compound and adhesives from F. Ball and Co. Ltd. have been chosen to install floorcoverings in the Middle East and Africa’s principal healthcare and research centre for the treatment of burns and trauma, the Ahl Masr Hospital in New Cairo, Egypt.Flooring contractors from Cairo-based Tradelink installed floorcoverings throughout the newly built hospital, including in inpatient rooms, intensive care units, nurse stations, blood donation areas, emergency department, administration centre and corridors, a total area of over 5,500m2.Tradelink began by undertaking moisture tests to ensure that the building’s subfloors were dry enough to receive floorcoverings. Surfaces were then primed using Stopgap P131 general-purpose primer to promote the application characteristics of subsequently applied subfloor preparation products.Stopgap Red Bag was then applied throughout to create a perfectly smooth base for floorcoverings to be installed. The water-mix, self-smoothing underlayment is designed for areas that are subject to light wheeled traffic and can be used over normal underfloor heating installations.Styccobond F44 solvent-free acrylic emulsion adhesive was used to install Gerflor Taralay Impression Compact safety flooring throughout the hospital, with the exception of operating theatres and X-ray rooms. Styccobond F44 provides a high bond strength, strong initial tack along with a long open time and is protected against biodegradation.Gerflor Mipolam Elegance EL5 conductive flooring was installed using Styccobond F57 in the operating theatres and X-ray rooms. Carbon fibres in the adhesive mean that when set it will conduct electricity, so when used to install conductive/anti-static floorcoverings, it stops the build-up of electrical charges that can affect sensitive electronic equipment. The solvent-free adhesive also offers strong initial tack and a high bond strength. Finally, Tradelink used Styccobond F60 contact adhesive to install skirting and capping and coving, as well as anti-bacterial PVC wall-guards, throughout the hospital.

Acoustic design for apartment conversion in Victorian house, Levenshulme

Acoustic design for apartment conversion in Victorian house, Levenshulme

Hush Acoustics

Achieving a Building Regulations compliant level of soundproofing in residential conversion projects demands the use of superior quality soundproofing materials and systems, which are deployed in the right way. It is an approach that a recent development in the south Manchester suburb of Levenshulme perfectly encapsulates, with outstanding results for the developer and future residents.Hush Acoustics was tasked to provide a solution for a conversion project at 31 Albert Road, Levenshulme by Meridian Construction & Refurbishments. It was converting the five-bedroom Victorian dwelling into two residential flats, which meant the separating floors had to be constructed in a way that would meet the acoustic standards set out in Approved Document E of the Building Regulations for England and Wales.Under Approved Document E, ‘material change of use’ projects like this must incorporate soundproofing in the floors between individual dwellings to reduce the risk of nuisance sound transmission. Evidence that the floor construction complies with the standards is normally provided to building control through post-installation acoustic testing, which on this project was undertaken by C80 Solutions.Hush Acoustics was invited to attend the site by Meridian when the building was at its early rip out stage. This provided an opportunity to get a clear understanding of the situation and discuss the options for the separating floors to ensure they would meet the requirements of Approved Document E.The floor structure was a traditional timber floor with floorboards. There was only a very limited specification in the design, so Hush was able to help by providing specialist technical consultation to develop the most cost effective and easy to install solution for the Meridian site team.Following the site visit and inspection of the building, Hush Acoustics’ soundproofing specialists developed an acoustic product specification for the separating floors that would not only meet the minimum standards of the Building Regulations, but exceed them with ease.Hush-Panel 17, a thin MDF overlay board which incorporates a 10mm Hush-Felt resilient layer, was installed over the structural deck. This was glued using Hush-Bond Panel Adhesive and isolated at the perimeters using Hush-Seal 20.The structural deck consisted of the original floorboards that had been overboarded with a thin plywood. This provided a solid flat surface to install the acoustic flooring. The existing ceiling was left in place where possible to avoid the need for ripping out where it was not required, which allowed for a new acoustic ceiling to be installed. This consisted of two layers of 15mm Fireline plasterboard on a suspended frame with Hush-Slab 100 sound absorber slabs placed within the ceiling void.As part of the service, Hush Acoustics arranged for the acoustic testing to be carried out by testing partner C80 Solutions. They recorded the following results:Airborne – 53 dB DnTw+Ctr and 52 dB DnTw+Ctr (the higher, the better)Impact – 48 dB LnTw and 43 dB LnTw (the lower, the better)These are very good acoustic figures for a separating floor in a residential conversion project of this kind, demonstrating what can be achieved with a combination of high quality soundproofing materials are combined and installation correctly.Ultimately, this outstanding acoustic performance for the separating floors will help to ensure a high level of satisfaction for the future residents of these modern apartments.

Hempel, trusted to protect wind turbines around the world

Hempel A/S

Standing at an impressive 140 metres high, Vestas’ wind turbine stands at the Danish National Test Centre for large wind turbines, where it is producing electricity for around 7,500 homes. The impressive structure – which has a rotor area the size of three football fields – needs a robust coating system to protect it from the corrosive saltwater atmosphere. As a long-standing Vestas supplier and development partner, it was natural that Vestas ask us to provide a protective coating system for the V-164 8.0 MW prototype.Due to the tower’s size, special vehicles are required to move the pieces. As well as anti-corrosive protection, the coating system has to deliver excellent abrasion resistance in order to protect the tower during transport and installation. Vestas chose to use our standard protective coating system for wind turbines, which is proven to deliver excellent anti-corrosion performance, robust abrasion resistance and lasting weather and UV resistance.Vestas chose a highly durable protective coating system for both the interior and exterior surfaces. The exterior surface is categorised as C5-I (high) according to ISO 12944, and our coating system comprised Hempadur 4774A, a self-priming high-build epoxy, followed by a layer of Hempathane HS 5561B, a two-component, aliphatic polyurethane finish. The internal surfaces have a lower corrosive categorisation and were coated with two layers of Hempadur 4774A.

MIDDAS worked closely with SDC and architects at Ridge to incorporate all interfaces seamlessly within the new facility. Off the back of this small project, MIDDAS were commissioned direct by Xtrac to design and build two further acoustic test cells in the original facility.  BriefThe high velocity rotation of parts within the test chamber would generate considerable noise, so the new acoustic enclosures were designed to house gearbox test equipment and provide sound isolation and safety for the rigorous testing process. SolutionMIDDAS installed M200 acoustic partitions from floor slab to soffit to create enclosures that provided sound reduction to 33dB (Rw). The team worked closely with the Xtrac project manager and specialist doors supplier for seamless integration of the door sets. To achieve the required acoustic performance, the vision panels were triple glazed with an intermediate pane of glass. MIDDAS also developed a stepped design for the ceiling to integrate all M&E distributed services.

Soundis Cradle & Batten Acoustic Flooring at Premier Inn, Brook House, Westminster, London

Soundis

Previously occupied for office use, Brook House is being converted and extended to provide a 179 Bedroom Hub by Premier Inn. The Supply of Soundis Acoustic Cradle & Batten Flooring on the 1st Floor and 2nd Floor needed to achieve and provide service voids and flooring depths of 95mm – 185mm – 200mm – 450mm and 550mm. There was also a requirement for a higher performance specification in the bedrooms over the reception area and restaurant. As the site is ‘Material Change of Use’, conversion from Offices to Habitable Dwellings, the 1,000 sq m2 project was required to provide sound test certificates from on-site tests in order to achieve compliance with Approved Document E Building Regulations, which came into effect in July 2003. The Soundis cradle & batten system has achieved test results well in excess of the requirements when tested on this project and similar developments throughout the UK. Our Cradle and Risers are manufactured from 100% recycled materials assisting to the sustainability targets of projects.

Oscar Iso-Mount Type1 achieves 90-minute fire rating

Oscar Acoustics

Oscar Acoustics achieved a 90-minute fire rating at BRE Group’s testing facility for its Iso-Mount Type1 acoustic ceiling hanger. Iso-Mount Type1 significantly reduces transmission of noise from the floor above with minimum ceiling height loss. The mount was tested to BS EN 1365-2:2014 Fire Resistance Tests for Loadbearing Elements at BRE Group’s laboratory in Watford in December 2018. Iso-Mount Type1 can be specified for projects ranging from house conversion to flats, both new build and renovation, as well as shops, restaurants and other commercial soundproofing applications.
