In 2008, Structural Metal Decks approached the University of Southampton in order to revise the design of their trapezoidal profiles to reaffirm SMD as one of the UK’s leading providers of structural decking systems. The result was a highly successful, two year, Knowledge Transfer Partnership project sponsored by the TSB. SMD working for Severfield Reeve installed 70,000m2 of their R51 profile in what will be the tallest building in Europe, The Shard, at London Bridge. The updated profiles developed under the KTP were used on the 72nd floor, believed to be the highest composite deck in Europe.

The current Google HQ, with vast external floor space over several levels. The decking is a bespoke solid section 230 x 30mm composite, commissioned for this site. All fixings are hidden, giving a seamless look to the terraces, and clean lines. The main terrace areas are level and by using the DPH slope correction system, the wheelchair access ramps were easily achieved. A clever feature; the BM Unit travels over the decking, hiding the steel rails below. This enlarges the overall usable terrace space considerably, and gives uninterrupted views from the entire terrace.

Thermography tests assessed the differences & compared the thermal gain of uncoated Accoya decking to thermally modified wood & wood plastic composites. Results showed Accoya is superior having a low thermal gain while the other materials attained significantly higher surface temperatures; the Accoya decking remained cool to touch despite being in direct sunlight on a day with an ambient temperature of 32 degrees. This particular Accoya decking benefit is very crucial to the visitors of the Thai resort & further contributing to the barefoot friendly credentials, Accoya decking’s surface remains smooth, resists splintering & grain raising, despite the high ambient temperatures.

Grad `Hidden Fixing` Decking System Project

The Outdoor Deck Company were commissioned to refurbish the external terraces of several top floor apartments located on Nile Street, London. The brand new `grad` invisible fixing clip deck system was supplied and installed by the Outdoor Deck Company, their first ever `grad` installation in the UK. The unique clip and groove design at the heart of the `grad` system means that decks can be installed about 30% faster than competing products. The `grad` system can be retrofitted onto existing timber joists, installed from scratch on top of a new timber sub-frame, or mounted onto the bespoke rail system.

Princesshay Shopping Centre, Exeter

The £230m Princesshay Shopping Centre, in Exeter, officially opened to the public in September 2007, as part of the city’s biggest ever regeneration project, with over 70 shops, cafés and restaurants. The roof of the centre, installed when the building was constructed, had caused various problems throughout its life. A Sarnabar system in Lead Grey was chosen, with a T fleece between the composite deck and the mechanically fastened Sarnafil S327-18EL membrane. On a smaller roof with a plywood deck, Sarnafil G410-ELF, an adhered system with a fleece backing, was specified.

iDecking walkway in high profile modern style home

The client was looking to replace an old 67 metre long wooden walkway surrounding a pool. Their contractor recommended the Decking system due to the low profile aluminium substructure and moisture-proof composite boards which require far less ongoing maintenance. The installer removed the old decking to reveal the sub base, then used Wallbarn’s heavy duty MegaPad pedestals to underpin the iDecking rail system. Our proposed laying pattern complemented the architect’s original design, drawing the eye down the length of the walkway. The entire job took two weeks to complete. The client is delighted with the results.

The British Horse Society headquarters is on a listed deer park with many protected trees. The building’s circular design posed key construction challenges. The single storey office building was constructed in a doughnut shape, to ensure that a mature oak tree on site was preserved. In keeping with its green surroundings Spectraplan SM120 Dark Grey, a polyester reinforced TPE waterproofing system was mechanically fixed to a composite metal deck, ready to receive a sedum blanket.

Marley Alutec Provides Asbestos Solution for South Holderness Technology College

Alutec

South Holderness Technology College in East Yorkshire has safely managed to overcome its asbestos problem thanks to Marley Alutec’s expert knowledge and unique composite aluminium Evoke fascia and soffit system. Built in the 1950s, South Holderness Technical College was constructed with a flat roof using asbestos cement roof decking. The roofing system used continuous asbestos cement sheets to form both the internal ceiling finish and the external soffits, so removal of these boards was not an option.

Buzon UK supplied and installed the DPH pedestal range for the composite decking and paving to many of the terraces and balconies across the 14 separate apartment buildings. The DPH pedestal system is perfect for use at roof level as they allow for 5% slope correction and can accommodate a range of services beneath floor level as well as giving excellent drainage.

The installer removed the old decking then used Wallbarn’s heavy duty MegaPad pedestals to underpin the iDecking rail system. These were screwed to the concrete lintels before the aluminium under rails were screwed into the pedestals. The laying pattern followed the architect’s original design, drawing the eye down the length of the walkway. This job took 2 weeks to complete and the client is delighted with the results.

Project involved decking a 350m2 the rooftop of a commercial block in the heart of the city. The owners wanted to create a roof terrace for staff. The customer chose the iDecking complete solution for it's superior look. Installation was carried out on an inverted roof. The contractor laid down a double layer of our aluminium frame onto Wallbarn MegaPad pedestals which provide a stable footing for the framework. The composite Moor Oak boards were stamped into position. Installers were able to achieve a great finish by accurately cutting the boards to fit neatly to edges and corners.

Rockcliffe Hall blends indoor and outdoor areas to create a luxurious spa experience. Xsite Architecture specified Trex Contour® composite deck boards in Sand Brown in the Spa Garden outdoor area around the two hot pools: the infinity edge pool and the warm Jacuzzi, and also for the relaxing lounging area surrounded by landscaped gardens. Trex Contour® was selected for its non-slip properties – essential for a poolside setting. The fact that Trex Contour® is low maintenance and fade and stain resistant make is an excellent choice. Easy installation of the product meant that disruption was kept to a minimum.

This was a major refurbishment and landscaping project for an office development in the City of London. A podium deck had been re-waterproofed and the area landscaped, by contractor Scotscape, with a mixture of hard surfaces, grass lawns, planters and borders. Wallbarn has a very wide range of pedestals for a variety of applications. So we were able to supply exactly the right pad to best support the 6 x 2” joists the landscaping contractor needed to hold their decking boards. The timber joists were fixed into a frame and rigid insulation placed into the cavities between the beams.

Sinclair Meadows – Zero Carbon Code 6 Housing

Providing 21 affordable homes in the first ‘carbon negative’ housing community of its kind in the UK. The initial concept began in 2009 with the aim of creating carbon negative housing. The project is ground breaking with a plan to lock away as much carbon as possible whilst generating excess energy from systems installed. Reppel products used: Lewis Deck light weight steel/ screed composite floor system providing acoustic floors improving Building Regulations Part E standards by at least 8dB. Lacomet FL flashing was also used - as alternative to lead, solving the problem of tannins leaching from timber shingles roofs.

Our ethos of "All this from one supplier" certainly held true in helping secure the business for a Rinato Premium decking, glass spigots and glass balustrade project. Rinato Premium solid core boards were used for this stunning application. The durable, stylish and weatherproof boards are manufactured from recycled polymer and require virtually no maintenance. Rinato Premium is particularly suited for balconies, where gaps between the boards can be closed using our double fixing clips. Base fix glass spigots, 10mm monolithic glass panels and split tube handrail was then used to complement and complete this amazing glass balustrade project.

The decking is a hardwearing product with an expected in-service life of more than 50 years. The attraction needed a new decking solution for its Terrace Bar & Café which gets a lot of footfall from visitors getting a meal or drink after water sports or from live music event held at the centre.

They have created a tranquil and safe environment with decked walkways leading around ponds and a waterfall feature, surrounded by tropical plants and tree ferns. There is also a large five-by-eighteen-metre decked terrace to enable guest of the B&B and restaurant to dine outdoors. Because the garden sits in a shaded valley the option of timber decking was initially ruled out until they contacted Gripsure.

The non slip timber decking is used on a new 60-metre-long boardwalk at Acres Lake. As well as on a new fishing and viewing platform, which is accessible to disabled visitors, and will ensure the waterside attraction stays safe– even in wet weather. Created by Waterways Ireland, the development is aimed at attracting more people to enjoy the waterways. As well as traditional boaters, the family-friendly trails are now bringing walkers, canoeists, paddle boarders and cyclists to enjoy the trails.
