As well as building an immaculate four-bedroom, four-bathroom Georgianhouse for the client, Rymill also took on the task of creating 3 brand new, modern properties, all with basements built into the existing sloping site. The large, partially retained basement areas would all house a stairwell, plantroom, storage room, cinema room, zen room, two ensuite double bedrooms and a garden room, and so required a completely dry internal environment.

Newton Specialist Contractors ASF Waterproofing were called in to investigate why the Bridge Master’s Quarters at No.1 Tower Bridge was suffering from damp and proceeded to install multiple Newton products to resolve the issue.At the world-famous Tower Bridge, landscaping contractor Maylim was commissioned by the City of London Corporation to investigate why the Bridge Master's Quarters at No.1 Tower Bridge was suffering from damp.After excavating, they discovered that the structure had no effective damp proofing protection. Newton Specialist Contractor ASF Waterproofing were commissioned to install new damp proofing measures to solve the issue.ASF Waterproofing approached the project in two phases, using multiple products to effectively damp proof both inside and outside the building. At the start of phase one, ASF correctly prepared and cleaned the internal wall surfaces before installing a new damp-proof course by injecting Newton 804-DPC into the walls at regular intervals, then sealing the holes with Newton 313-WP. The walls were then smoothed with a new internal render, ready for Newton 103-S to be quickly and easily sprayed to provide a final barrier to water.For phase two, the ASF team turned to the external walls of the structure, preparing and cleaning the surface before applying a new external render coat. The wall was then thoroughly waterproofed with four coats of the flexible, resilient Newton 109-LM. To ensure that the building was completely protected externally, the waterproofing began at 1 metre below ground level and extended all the way up to the existing windowsills.Thanks to their meticulous attention to detail and high standard of installation, ASF Waterproofing were able to provide both the contractor and the client with a high-quality and comprehensive damp proofing solution. As a result, the City of London Corporation can now hand over the building to the new lease holder, safe in the knowledge that it is well protected from damp.

Vehicle/Pedestrian safety barriers for the new 627 space, 6 storey car park at the Derriford Hospital in Plymouth.Like many hospitals, Derriford in Plymouth has to match ever-increasing numbers of patients, visitors and staff with limited parking availability. The new 627 space multi-storey car park on the North West Quadrant will go a long way towards easing the situation for the daily 8,000 footfall to the hospital. Part of a 6.6 hectare site being developed by Wharfside Regeneration for Plymouth Hospitals Trust, the new car park was designed by international architects S333 and built by Sir Robert McAlpine Limited.The eco-friendly design features green walls with climbing plants on the two lowest levels, steel latticework on the next two and timber latticework on levels 5 and 6. We recommended our RB1X Spring Steel Buffers that ‘give’ in a collision to absorb impact forces and minimise damage to the barrier, the vehicle and the car park deck that the barrier is mounted on. After an impact, the barrier returns to its original position to provide ongoing protection. Berry Beam rails were used to give a more refined  appearance than the traditional Armco ‘W’ section.A BS 6180 compliant pedestrian handrail was mounted above the barrier on post extensions of 1,100mm high and the space in between filled with anti-climb mesh to stop pedestrians from falling through, or even climbing over the barrier.

The Residence required fast, robust hot melt waterproofing that met the demanding construction programme.ChallengesThe fast construction programme on this project imposed stringent requirements with regard to design, delivery, installation sequencing and coordination with Axter’s on site Quality Assurance (QA) team.The rapid build programme meant the waterproofing system needed to be capable of withstanding construction traffic and activity from other trades, with limited protection. Complex roof, elevation and cladding interface construction details resulted in the need for on site bespoke waterproofing detail design change, that maintained guarantees and ensured a defect free construction for the lifetime of the building.Restricted site storage and delivery access combined with the complexities of inner London construction challenged Axter’s logistics team to provide multi-vehicle, timed delivery without risk of delay or programme disruption.SolutionsThrough early involvement in the design process and collaboration with the developer and project architect, it was agreed that Wilotekt-Plus, second generation hot melt structural waterproofing system, was the right solution. The pour and roll application significantly reduced installation times, ensuring all areas were waterproofed quickly in time to receive a variety of roof finishes – living roof, paving, solar panels, etc.Wilotekt-Plus was installed fully bonded to the concrete slab, providing a robust, 7mm thick, self-healing system capable of withstanding significant construction traffic without defect.Upstands were completed using Cityflor root resistant bitumen membranes. Complex details, where a fire risk was identified by Axter QA, were completed using Starcoat QC in accordance with Axter specification requirements and the National Federation of Roofing Contractors (NFRC) Safe2Torch guidelines.Our accredited Axtershield Installer Bracknell Roofing Ltd followed the project specification in full and works were completed to a very high standard. Regular on-site quality checks were conducted by Axter QA personnel to ensure guarantee procedures were followed and programme deadlines were met.AcknowledgmentsAxter is a company with technically advanced products. Twinfix is a family run business. For more than 30 years they have supplied modular polycarbonate panels for use as rooflights in many railway stations and depots. Replacing the old canopy glazing used at rail stations with products from Twinfix’s range of polycarbonate glazing options floods the area with daylight while eliminating the common issues that occur with historic railway roof glazing. Last year, Twinfix assisted with the refurbishment of two of the UK’s historic stations, Gerrards Cross and Headstone Lane.Gerrards Cross StationGerrards Cross Station is a fantastic example of one of the nation’s historic stations. Built in 1906 as part of the Great Western and Great Central Joint Railway it has recently undergone a series of upgrades to improve the station for passengers.As part of a £2.4m Railway Upgrade Plan investment by Network Rail, the following areas were refurbished:Full replacement of the platform’s canopy – ensuring passengers are protected from the weatherInstalling lighting throughout – making the station safer and more secureRe-roofing of the main station’s roofWindows repairs where necessaryApplying fresh coats of paint to steelworkRefurbishment of the canopy roofHeadstone Lane StationTravel eleven miles east of Gerrards Cross and you arrive at Headstone Lane station. Another of the UK’s historic stations, this station opened in February 1913 and consists of a small single storey brick-built station building adjacent to the Headstone Lane road bridge, with two platforms.This station was also part of the Railway Upgrade Plan, with investment in the refurbishment of both platform canopies.An innovative roof glazing systemA team comprising of Network Rail, Principal Contractor J. Murphy & Sons Limited, and specialist Design Consultant Arcadis Consulting (UK) Ltd were assigned to the job to ensure that the correct roof glazing was specified and installed over the platforms.The product chosen for both stations was the innovative Twinfix modular non-fragile Multi-Link-Panel NF (Non-Fragile) system, glazed with 6mm clear solid polycarbonate. Approximately 225 square metres of these panels were required to re-glaze the five canopies across both stations, with panels delivered to site ready for quick installation.Each panel of the innovative Multi-Link-Panel NF system comprises of a powder-coated aluminium frame and fitted with polycarbonate glazing. The panels are built completely off-site in a quality-controlled factory environment, reducing the risk, and cost, of site mistakes, and are delivered on-site fully glazed and ready for rapid installation. The system has a unique linking design feature that results in incredibly quick installation times, making the system very much suited to rail work due to its restricted possession times.The Multi-Link-Panel NF system is an innovative roof glazing product that has been well utilised for many years on station canopy roofs, and it has been thoroughly tried and tested in that time.It was the chosen system for this project for a number of reasons:sustainability – these panels are virtually unbreakable in manufacture, transit and in situ, meaning that, unlike glass, maintenance costs will be eliminated.safety – Twinfix Multi-Link-Panel NF (Non-Fragile) conforms to the HSE recommended test method ACR[M]001:2019 (as outlined in document HSG33) and achieves a ‘B’ Classification.off-site construction – The panels are pre-assembled in Twinfix’s factory ensuring strict quality guidelines are adhered to, which is not always guaranteed when roofing products are assembled on site.ease of access – The Multi-Link-Panel NF system can be fitted with In-Line Access Hatches, to allow cleaning of gutters and roof. These hatches are hardly visible and allow safe access through the glazing without needing to get on the roof.weight – The Multi-Link-Panel NF is light in weight and due to its modular format, it is very quick to install which allows for short rail possession works.appearance – the clear polycarbonate panels have the appearance of glass and provide just the right level of light transmission onto the platforms below.This project demanded a collaborative approach, requiring Twinfix to liaise closely with Principal Contractor J. Murphy & Sons Limited, installation company Orchard Roofing & Building, and design consultancy Arcadis, where early engagement with the team ensured that all aspects of the project ran smoothly from the onset.Richard Nash, Contracts Manager at J. On the site of a former ambulance station, this project is situated in Castle Park, the largest urban green space in Bristol. It provided 375 new homes, through a mixture of Build-to-Rent and affordable dwellings.OverviewThe £90million Castle Park View is an exciting, award winning (Best Residential Development - Bristol Property Awards) and attractive new-build residential scheme, designed by Architect Chapman Taylor and built by Bouygues UK.This project included the regeneration of a brownfield site owned by Bristol City Council and Homes England in a prime location on the south-eastern corner of Castle Park. The development includes communal facilities, amenity space, and car parking, together with vehicular access, servicing arrangements, public realm works and landscaping. Now completed, this has set the benchmark for high rise development within the Bristol skyline, topping out at 26 storeys.Systems and productsThe client’s requirements called for a robust, extensive and holistic waterproofing system guarantee. Through Axter's vast system and product portfolio, the selection was made for a combination of Hyranger® and Cityflor® reinforced bituminous waterproofing systems, with allowance for cold applied liquid detailing where complex penetrations and compliance with NFRC Safe 2 Torch requirements were present. In such instances, Axter's Starcoat® PMMA and Starcoat® R cold applied bituminous PU liquids were used.In accordance with BS 6229:2018 section 4.4 Roof falls to achieve drainage, the concrete structure proved too complex for falls to be created with the traditional method. As such, a series of complex tapered insulation designs were completed to meet the requirements - both thermally, and to ensure a minimum of 1:80 finished falls were achieved.ComplexityGiven the regeneration of the brownfield site, it was critical to everyone involved that none of the wildlife and vegetation previously found at the site was lost. The implementation of Axter’s bespoke, bio-diverse brown roof with seeded mix was required to enhance the built environment and provide a habitat for the native species of wildlife and flora.To create the high-rise elements and visual representation of traditional castle turrets, albeit in modern form, the cladding panel detail required a bespoke castellation bracket fixed through the main roof structure of Block C. It was necessary for this to be accessed at various times during the build process. This required a complex sequence of works and the use of a cold applied liquid system.This project, like many across the UK, was hit by the outbreak of COVID-19. Extensive delays to the build programme were a challenge, plus complexities within the market through shortage of labour, transport and raw materials. Both Axter and NRA Roofing & Flooring Services Ltd worked tirelessly with the key stakeholders, such as Bouygues, to ensure timely supply and delivery of all materials was made through additional storage capacity, off site storage, negotiation and rigorous project planning. This involved collaborative open dialogue, regular workshops and project reviews.Due to the site’s location, the infrastructure and layout of roads meant that all deliveries were required to be on a strict timed system including all allowances for offloading and lifting within a tight time period. This required meticulous planning and allowances with very little margin for error or delay. In a time where COVID guidelines restricted contact to a minimum of two metres, it was incredible to see all parties work so well together to ensure these windows of time were met.Project managementAlthough all roofs were finished with a traditional three-layer bituminous membrane finish - including a tapered cut to falls insulation scheme - the project comprised a variety of roofing finishes including brown bio-diverse roofs, decorative paving and solar panel installations.Daily logistics meetings were held with all parties to co-ordinate and plan the most efficient way of undertaking each phase of the works, thus maintaining safety and efficiency at all times throughout the project.The roofing scheme was successfully delivered and handed over in April 2022 which was within the very tight programme deadlines, despite the delays and complications provided by the pandemic which inevitably led to a significant number of complications.NRA Roofing & Flooring Services Ltd were able to successfully deliver the installation of the complex amenity area to one of the roofs which included a significant area of decorative large profile ceramic tiling on pedestals, as well as an outdoor cooking area, planters and green roof areas to the tops of sheltered seating spaces.At handover, Bouygues expressed their sincere gratitude to NRA Roofing & Flooring Services Ltd in being able to deliver this highly complex, multi-faceted city centre project successfully in terms of safety, on time and within the agreed contract budget.Systems in UseHyranger®Cityflor®Starcoat® PMMAStarcoat® RknowledgmentsWe have been working closely with Axter for a number of years across our regions, during which time they have become a vital part of the supply chain, from early stage design and costing to the successful delivery of robust, guaranteed waterproofing systems.With a vast product portfolio, BYUK are confident that the build requirements and production timescales will always be met. Beckfoot Allerton opened on 19th November 1894, a proud day for the village of Allerton and its people. The school underwent many changes throughout the years surviving and contributing to both war efforts, while continuing to hold their high standards of education. In 1928 the school official became a primary school and later in 1960 a junior and infants’ school further undergoing changes. After a local authority change in 2000 Beckfoot Allerton Primary school was reborn. In the present day the school is much different to when it was opened generations ago and continues to serve as a corner stone of the village and its community.Taking into consideration all of the requirements of the roof, a bespoke specification was prepared to refurbish the roof. Polyroof’s Protec System, a hybrid polymer liquid system with extremely fast curing and installation times, was the chosen system of use for the project. Due to its fully cold-applied application the works could be carried out during the Primary Schools term times, without having to wait for closure periods between terms.

A contractor client was working on a retro-fit balcony and flat roof project in Brighton. The waterproofing membrane had tapered insulation placed on top and the contractor discovered ballasting the insulation was needed, only once on the roof. The door thresholds were too tight for a traditional decking system with joists. Wallbarn advised for paving slabs on 9mm rubber pads; then 30mm thick ipe timber tiles mounted onto Adjustable Pedestals. The buildup was under 100mm and the overall finish of the tropical hardwood was glorious. The architect was relieved that we could produce a solution, the client was delighted.

Products from F. Ball and Co. Ltd.’s System LVT range, including the company’s fast-track, fibre-reinforced transitional adhesive, Styccobond F58 PLUS, have been used to install luxury vinyl tiles in an ambitious, modern self-build property in rural Cambridgeshire.Flooring contractors began by thoroughly vacuuming the building’s concrete subfloor to remove dust and debris. F. Ball’s technical service team recommended treating the subfloor as a newly installed screed for the purposes of moisture management, despite being installed months earlier, as it had been left exposed to the elements since. Therefore, Stopgap F77 waterproof surface membrane was used to create a barrier to prevent excess subfloor moisture attacking adhesives and floorcoverings, potentially causing floor failure.Once the waterproof surface membrane had cured, the surface was primed using Stopgap P141. Stopgap 300 HD heavy-duty levelling compound was then applied over the entire ground floor to create a perfectly smooth base for the receipt of floorcoverings. The product’s high compressive strength and excellent self-levelling properties help create a flawless finish when installing LVTs, while ensuring a long-lasting, aesthetically pleasing floor finish even when subject to high levels of wear.The contractors then used Styccobond F58 PLUS and Styccobond F49 Hybrid PS temperature tolerant, moisture resistant, pressure sensitive adhesive to install wood-effect LVTs over the 372m2 area. Styccobond F49 was used where floor-to-ceiling windows were likely to cause temperatures to rise significantly as a result of solar gain.Styccobond F58 PLUS was used to install vinyl tiles everywhere else. The fast-track adhesive enables floorcoverings to be installed from as little as five minutes after application, transitioning from a wet-lay adhesive to become fully pressure sensitive. The adhesive’s high bond strength and strong initial tack also prevent excess adhesive oozing between joints, facilitating easier application.All of the products used in this installation feature in the F. Client: Bruntwood Estates Specialist Contractor: Grade-2 Structural Repairs Main Products Used: Emseal SJS SystemThis busy, multi-storey, prime location, car park is located between Manchester United’s Old Trafford Football Stadium, Lancashire’s Old Trafford Cricket Ground and Trafford House, a 12-Storey commercial development. The businesses use the car park during the week and then it is reserved for MUFC fans on matchdays and weekends. The car park was undergoing scheduled structural inspection, when it was discovered that the traditional compression joints were failing in the wide structural movement joints on the access ramps. This meant they were now leaking and allowing water ingress, which could lead to damaging salt deposits on expensive vehicles, as well as potential corrosion and damage to the reinforced concrete decks and the structural frame itself. These joints needed to be made watertight and accommodate significant horizontal and vertical movement, as well as traffic impact and weathering. The engineers looked for a solution that could safely repair and seal the joints, but with only minimal ramp closure or downtime, and the Emseal SJS System was selected as the ideal solution, as it could be installed in just two short, phased closures at weekends, when there were no home games. In the first weekend, with only one lane closed, the failed compression joint was removed and the joint arrisses made good with fast setting resin, then on the next weekend closure, the bespoke lengths of Emseal SJS were installed with access only required from above.

The deck was replaced and a complete warm roof build up, including Proteus Pro- Therm PIR insulation boards, was installed and finished with Proteus Pro-Cold®. As ponding was an issue on this roof, a new gutter was created to solve this problem. The client was incredibly pleased with the finish, so much so, that their neighbours have requested our Proteus Approved Contractor to carries out their roofing works. Health & SafetyAs the building is an occupied residential building, keeping the residents safe was paramount. The extension and refurbishment of these offices needed high-quality systems befitting their prestigious location adjacent to Windsor Castle and the listed Eton Central Station.The Windsor Dials complex comprises two buildings, Windsor One and Two. Building one had a double-height entrance installed and a two-storey glazed extension added to the roof. A double-height entrance was also created in building two with a single-storey extension to the roof. The glazed extensions provide the offices with views of Windsor Castle and the surrounding area.Hale Architects designed the project with Corley Woolley as the main contractor. Anglian Architectural fabricated and installed the building envelope. It features Schüco FSW 60 and FWS 50 S curtain walling, providing the contemporary aesthetic the client requested. The project also used Schüco door systems, including the ADS 65 HD and ASE 60 lift-and-slide doors.

A busy recycling centre in Coedcae Industrial Estate, Pontyclun South Wales, suffered from a crippling fire that destroyed one-third of the building leaving the rest in severe disrepair from fire damage.Garland Technical Manager, Dale Thomas, was instructed by long-term partner Cushman Wakefield to assess the extent of the damage and secure the optimum waterproofing system to get the warehouse unit returned to its former glory as a hive of activity for the local area.Dale conducted a thorough condition survey and supplied a detailed written report to the client, highlighting the severity of the building damage and the poor condition of the existing roof sections and walls. Approximately 2,000 sqm were either damaged beyond repair or had fallen into a state of disrepair, meaning that a full refurbishment of all roof and wall sections was required before the optimum waterproofing system could be implemented.

Including premium blue Welsh natural roofing slates and a contemporary galvanised steel gutter system which were provided by Burton Roofing Merchants. The merchants remarked that the Lindab rainwater system, "makes a striking statement but ultimately benefits very low maintenance".Owner, Simon commented that the long term view has ruled in most instances as they didn’t want any regrets. The finished project is a real pleasure to see and has had a lot of press coverage.

Long standing and rich in history, Rhyl Railway station was opened on 1st May 1848 and was part of the Chester and Holyhead Railway Company’s line. The Station itself is located close to the centre of Rhyl, a lively seaside town on the North Wales coastline and a popular destination for many tourists across the country.As part of a Railway Upgrade Plan, Network Rail have invested £50 million into the restoration of stations across the North Wales Coast. Rhyl was one of the first stations to receive this upgrade and when it was shown that various roofs of the station were in need of restoration.The ChallengeRhyl was one of the first stations to receive this upgrade, and when it was shown that various roofs of the station were in need of restoration, Polyroof was chosen to help restore them to their former glory, and a survey was organised.The specified areas that were in need of refurbishment included the roof over Platform 2 and the bridge walkway roof which connected the two platforms. The existing waterproofing on these areas consisted of built-up felt with a mineral cap sheet, which was in an aged condition and beginning to show signs of failure such as splits and blisters. Leaks were now beginning to occur which were in danger of affecting the condition of the roof structure itself.The SolutionBased on the findings of the survey conducted by Polyroof Technical Services, a bespoke specification was designed that would eliminate the current issues through the installation of the BBA-approved Protec system. Due to the roof being situated above unheated areas, there was no requirement for new insulation within the build up. Firstly the existing built-up felt was stripped and removed from site to expose the original close-boarded timber which was inspected for defects, made good where required and retained where possible. Defective areas where replaced with new timberwork as required. In order to provide a sound, solid substrate a new OSB3 TG4 deck was mechanically fixed across the whole area within a phased approach, ensuring the roof was kept watertight as works progressed.The Protec system was then applied directly to the timber; with its RapidcureTM technology large areas where able to be made fully waterproof within short periods of time. Polyroof Technical Services visited site regularly to ensure works were being completed to the high standards required and regular reports were fed back to the client. Upon completion a final inspection by Polyroof led to the roof being signed off and guaranteed, giving the client complete peace of mind that their roof will be fully watertight for at least the 20 years. Polyroof were proud to be part of this project to restore Rhyl and its Railway station to its former glory.

They utilise the balanced flue system to be flexibly located anywhere in the building without the need for a chimney. False chimneybreasts have been created in each property to house the impressive log-effect fireplaces. They also accommodate the flat screen TVs making perfect focal points and conceal the concentric flues, which exit the building through the roof.

The Townhouses are formed with complex twisted geometries. As with the adjacent mews, materials were selected incorporating a solid masonry base, timber cladding to the projecting cantilevered boxes, aluminium glazing systems, white render and topped with blue zinc mono-pitched roofs.

Addagrip Addaset BBA resin bound surfacing has recently been installed in this street scheme as part of the redevelopment of the Bull Yard area in Coventry City Centre.The £2million redevelopment of the site, close to the Wave, included the requirement for a seamless paving solution that would be hard wearing and offer a safe, slip resistant, low maintenance porous surface for this busy retail area.The existing surfacing consisted of old asphalt and paved areas. Addagrip Terraco approved contractor Total Protection transformed the area with 1,770m2 of BBA approved Addaset resin bound porous surfacing in a Hazelnut blend to create seamless pedestrian areas alongside the water feature and children’s play area.The finished project enhances what is seen as a key arrival point into the city from Coventry railway station.Work commenced early 2020 but the planned April finish date was set back due to Covid-19 and was eventually completed in August 2020.
