Wakefield has had a sporting boost with the construction of its new Minsthorpe Leisure Centre which was opened February 2018, after the 14-month project was completed on schedule. A.J Wells manufactured three hundred square meters of coloured vitreous enamel cladding covering a lift shaft in the new students centre at the London School of Economics and Political Science on its Aldwych campus.The striking building, known as the Saw Swee Hock Student Centre (SAW), was designed by Dublin based practice O’Donnell & Tuomey Architects with the aim to transform the student social experience by creating a student hub at the heart of LSE’s campus. Clapham Junction Train Station is one of Europe’s busiest Railway Stations handling up to 50,000 passengers per day. AJ Wells designed, built and installed vitreous enamel cladding for the Grant Road Entrance.Detailed site surveys were carried out to design the appropriate framing system for the cladding panels. VIEGA MEGAPRESS – THE IDEAL FIT FOR FESTOOL HQAward-winning international power tools manufacturer, Festool has invested £10 million into its new headquarters based in Bury St. Edmonds. As part of the construction, Viega’s Megapress press connection technology has been utilised for the building’s new state-of-the-art heating system, allowing for an efficient and effective installation.Festool has relocated its 55 office-based employees to the new site in Suffolk Business Park, in Bury St. Edmonds. The large, modern facility includes meeting rooms, cafés and office space with a separate warehouse and demonstration facility. It was important for the company that its new headquarters represented a modern and sustainable design and could be a facility where the company can continue to expand and develop.The headquarters has a complex range of HVAC systems, including a hybrid air conditioning system, underfloor heating and domestic services. Viega’s carbon steel press fitting system, Megapress was an ideal solution to create the pipework connections, offering a fast and effective alternative to traditional methods such as welding.David Aldous, Mechanical Project Manager at Ceetech, the contractor for the project, commented: “We selected Megapress as it ticked all the boxes. It provided a secure press connection without the need for welding and allowed our team to undertake the work efficiently and effectively. This project had to be completed to a tight deadline, so it was essential to make strategic time gains throughout the installation period.“We were also able to make valuable time-savings because with the Megapress system, there is no need to prepare the pipe surface or clean it after as with welding, threading or grooving. From a health and safety perspective – it also removes the element of hot works.”A highly effective pressing method, Megapress connections can be made in just seven seconds – helping to achieve a 60% reduction in installation time. After cutting the pipe to the required length, contractors need only deburr the cut surface, slide the press fitting into place and press the connection.The simplicity of the press fitting process also ensures that a uniform seal is created on each connection throughout the project; particularly important on large-scale developments where there is set to be thousands of joints across a single site. Once the fitting has been pressed, it forms a strong and secure connection.David concluded: “The Megapress system is excellent, I’ll certainly select Viega again for future projects. The £1m centrepiece in the restoration of a historic park in Lancashire has been completed, incorporating innovative use of the MX curtain walling system from Technal. The dramatic sculptural pavilion in Avenham Park was the winning design in an RIBA competition. The building has a strong geometric design, which includes a complex zinc-clad ‘saw tooth’ roof and extensive use of timber, aluminium and glass.

Genting Casinos are a large chain of popular gaming destinations with locations across the UK and America. The property owner of the Riverlights location decided to take no risks with their new cladding, in an effort to protect people and the building in the face of the recent issues with fire spreading through and behind exterior cladding. They chose to change the existing boards to non-combustible alternatives and added Safeshield XT Reflect A2-s1, d0 fire rated construction membrane to the walls under the new boards. Safeshield was chosen for it’s high fire rating, adding another layer of protection against fire behind the cladding and inside the cavity, but also for its superior thermal properties. Safeshield XT Reflect’s reflective technology allows for greater energy efficiency in the building as it reflects heat, decreasing the emissivity of the wall cavity and reducing energy loss. Oakleigh Contracts also praised Safeshield for it’s easy and intuitive installation, as well as being extremely robust both during and after installation

Located within the historic market town of Alnwick, Willowburn Retail Park is a new shopping destination with easy access from the A1, boasting 37,405 sq.ft. of retail floorspace, plus 200 parking spaces.The distinctive modern design by Projekt Architects uses a bold mixture of sustainable materials including energy-efficient glazing plus sustainable timber Accoya for the cladding, soffit and eaves. Senior Architectural Systems provided the entire glazing package including thermally-efficient SF52 curtain walling for the full-height glazed frontages and robust SPW501 doors, Certified to PAS24 and Secured by Design standards, to provide secure access throughout the development.

The new Halcyon Way school was constructed for the community in Oldham - a Special Educational Needs (SEN) school for just over 150 children to grow, learn and develop in a caring and encouraging way.ChallengeMetal roofing and cladding contractor Decron Ltd were contracted to provide the façade for the new school. The challenge was to incorporate a green roof finish both flat and curved to the roof areas. The roof pitch being as steep as 45 degrees in places, a pitch not conducive with a green roof system. ABG used their expertise in green roof and slope stabilisation to make the curved green roof possible. The system incorporated a series of anchor points, reinforcement geogrid (Trigrid), and geocellular technology (Erosaweb) to retain growing medium on each roof. Extensive edging was required for the courtyards to delineate hard and soft landscapes. During a site visit, BAM asked us to also supply planters, benches, tiles and accessories for the terraces. This required a full supply and install package. Two 80m walkways were lined with 1.2 x 0.6m Atria tiles. One walkway was built on top of extensive M&E pipework so a bespoke steel pipe cover system was needed to support the tiles. Atria beige tiles were also used on four of the terraces to surround CorTen steel Planterline bespoke planters with inset iroko timber seating.

A single-pipe hot water system based has been installed with 1.2km of RAYCHEM HWAT-R self-regulating heating system supported by 13 RAYCHEM HWAT-ECO controllers. As the system uses half the pipework of a conventional recirculation system, on-site installation time was cut dramatically and this was enhanced further by use of the RayClic connection systems. It also meant that space savings could be made in walls and ceiling voids. The system is low-maintenance, a critical factor due to the sensitive nature of this building and can now be very easily extended during further planned developments.

AluOne comes with a tiled floor of concrete paving slabs. The plates have been carefully sandblasted to allow the natural stone ballast in the plate to appear. Thanks to our manufacturing method, this plate has an unique colour resistance. The paving slabs are 400 x 400 in size and available in three colour shades. Always designed with drainage management in mind, AluOne has a hidden system in the balcony for optional rainwater drainage. The water flows discreetly under the paving slabs, allowing it to move into the drainage pipe via a gutter in the balcony frame. This is connected to the building's drainage system or to a drainage pipe that ensures the balcony rainwater discharge is properly managed. AluOne is available ins 12 different sizes. You can choose between four different widths and three depths, each in convenient increments of 400mm.

VIEGA’S MEGAPRESS PROVIDES IDEAL SOLUTION FOR THE NEEDS OF THE NATIONAL GALLERYViega’s Megapress connection technology has been specified as the ideal solution for a section of pipe relocation work at The National Gallery in London. The industry-first press connection system for thick-walled steel tube, Megapress, ensured that the installation of steel pipework for the building’s heating and chilled water HVAC systems could take place without disruption to the gallery space which remained open throughout the project.The work was necessary in preparation for a gallery extension which is due to take place in January 2019. Before the building work could take place, it was vital that all pipe routes were relocated, bypassing the location of the extension, so that the other gallery spaces could continue to remain open during the planned building work.Colin Garbutt, Contracts Manager at Capri Mechanical Services Ltd. selected Viega’s Megapress due to the specific range of needs that the gallery space and its displays necessitated. Colin highlighted the difficult circumstances which involved taking the pipework up a riser and across the top of the gallery through a ventilation and services space.“For this installation, speed, cleanliness and minimal noise were key requirements to make sure we did not disrupt the gallery space which remained open below us,” Colin commented. “Hot works were not an option in such an environment and it would have been incredibly difficult for us to get the machinery needed for a screw system into such a tight space. Megapress allowed us to carry out the work quickly, cleanly and efficiently - which was ideal.”
