Ipe timber tiles offers decking solution for ultra low height threshold

Ipe timber tiles offers decking solution for ultra low height threshold

Wallbarn Ltd

A contractor client was working on a retro-fit balcony and flat roof project in Brighton. The waterproofing membrane had tapered insulation placed on top and the contractor discovered ballasting the insulation was needed, only once on the roof. The door thresholds were too tight for a traditional decking system with joists. Wallbarn advised for paving slabs on 9mm rubber pads; then 30mm thick ipe timber tiles mounted onto Adjustable Pedestals. The buildup was under 100mm and the overall finish of the tropical hardwood was glorious. The architect was relieved that we could produce a solution, the client was delighted.

With a sizeable budget at hand due to generous compensation from HS2, there were high expectations for top specification materials and an impressive finish at the new Water Orton site. O’Brien Contractors were appointed in 2021 to transform 17 acres of farmland into a state-ofthe-art sporting facility. The aim was to create a modern facility for sport and events, with the inspiration for the project being the surrounding natural environment. For Old Saltleians, this meant four high-standard grass pitches featuring advanced trench and pipe drainage (adhering to Sports England Standards), with irrigation ensuring year-round playability. Natural stone paving using pedestals - Douglas, Isle of Man

Wallbarn Ltd

This was a large roof terrace on a private domestic project. The area was flooded and had needed to be re-laid with waterproofing and a significant fall constructed into the deck to allow the often considerable amounts of rainwater to escape the roof deck. The contractor asked Wallbarn for a suitable but cost effective solution so we recommended Wallbarn 9mm rubber supports along with levelling shims. The area was re-waterproofed in the inverted waterproofing method, the membrane being covered with rigid insulation boards and a loose laid geotextile fabric to act as a separation layer .

The project team had considered Gabion Baskets but decided that they would detract from the beautiful surrounding landscaping.

Nicholls Lane, Stone, Staffordshire

Nicholls Lane, Stone, Staffordshire

Tobermore

This housing development required a retaining wall solution but presented challenges in terms of limited space and existing services. Two retaining walls were required at the sides of the entrance to Nicholls Lane housing development. While a Geogrid Reinforced Backfill method was appropriate for the Secura Grand retaining wall on the righthand side of the development, the retaining wall on the left was met with the challenges of limited space and existing services. The highway boundary limited the amount of space available to construct the retaining wall on the left- hand side. The existing services present within the retained soil caused further complexities. On this occasion minimising excavation was crucial due to the services within the retained soil. Efficient use of land was vital as the Secura wall didn’t have the room at the back for geogrid or for no-fines concrete backfill. It was desirable that both walls at the sides of the entrance looked the same despite their different conditions.

Balance self-levelling pedestals provide the solution to difficult paving scheme

Balance self-levelling pedestals provide the solution to difficult paving scheme

Wallbarn Ltd

Wallbarn worked with a specialist tile installer, working on a new-build in Carmarthenshire. Initially 600mm deep concrete screed was used for a base, but the weight bent the lintels. The concrete had to be broken out and the whole deck repaired. The installation was challenging with falls over 250mm across the deck. ‘Balance’ self-levelling adjustable pedestals provided the answer. Using bespoke pedestal planning software, MegaPro, the Wallbarn service team was able to work out the exact quantity and height of pedestals required for the scheme, colour-coded on the drawing, guiding installers on where to place each pedestal.

RESIN BOUND SWIMMING POOL SURROUND FOR DAVID LLOYD GYM IN ACTONAddagrip approved contractor Total Protection (GB) Ltd has installed 294m2 of Addabound Resin Bound surfacing around the swimming pool at the David Lloyd Gym in East Acton, London.SURFACING REQUIREMENTThe client was looking for a decorative Resin Bound paving for the outdoor swimming pool at the gym which has just undergone a £9m refurbishment to provide an indoor and outdoor pool, modern spa and racquet courts. The requirement was for a low maintenance system that would be smooth and comfortable underfoot, providing a decorative aggregate finish that could be powerwashed as part of the cleaning regime of the pool area.Interserve Construction appointed Total Protection (GB) Ltd to prepare the surface and install 294m2 of BBA approved Addabound Resin Bound surfacing in a recycled marble Dune blend. The challenge was the preparation required to the existing surfaces surrounding and adjacent to the outdoor pool to ensure a suitable substrate for the Resin Bound system. Undulations and differing depths were regulated with compatible screed material and an aluminium edge detail was installed to provide an edge for the 12mm depth of Addabound. The new surface was installed in a single application in May 2018 to prevent any day joints and ensure the smooth, seamless finish was achieved in time for the grand opening.

TERRABASE RUSTIC PAVING FOR KEW GARDENS BROAD WALK

Addagrip Terraco Ltd

RESIN BOUND FOR RBG KEW WALKWAYAddagrip Terraco are delighted to have been involved in the Broad Walk project at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew with the installation of over 3000sqm of our innovative resin bound porous paving system, Terrabase Rustic.SURFACING REQUIREMENTSAddagrip Terraco were approached as the UK ‘s leading manufacturer of resin exterior surfaces and together with approved contractor, True Grip Ltd, carried out extensive surveys and put together several specification options and costs that Kew could consider. Kew selected Addagrip’s new patented resin bound surfacing system Terrabase Rustic as it offered a larger 6-10mm stone size providing the rustic looking finish that Kew required and could be installed over the existing macadam with minimum environmental impact and disruption. Drainage was another key requirement and the larger stone size of this bound system provides maximum porosity. As the Terrabase product was relatively new, the surface had to meet many exacting performance criteria put forward by Kew which Addagrip was able to substantiate. After 9 months of discussion, True Grip Ltd were appointed to work via main contractor Kier Facilities Services to install the Terrabase Rustic Oak finish. Despite challenging weather conditions and site restrictions due to the public use of the main areas, True Grip Ltd installed 3,163m2 over the entire Broad Walk, following behind Kier Facilities Services who were installing extensive drainage services and brick edging. The new Terrabase Rustic surface is hard wearing, low maintenance with no loose stone and provides a seamless, natural rustic pathway which looks very much at home in the grounds of London’s historic Royal Botanic Gardens. This exciting project has created the longest double herbaceous borders in the UK. The 300m long borders either side of the Broad Walk from the Orangery to the Palm House Pond, were planted with swathes of vibrant summer flowering perennials, grasses and bulbs to form a spectacular new horticultural feature. Planting continued into early summer 2016 to complete the project.Image credit: Richard Wilford, RBG Kew

RYNO

A residential development, Timber Wharf is located on the corner of the Roman-built Kingsland Road and 19th-century Regents Canal and features commercial space as well as a canal-side restaurant. The residential area is grouped around a quiet cobbled courtyard offering a sheltered play area, while the waterfront apartments make up the courtyard’s northern edge and are set back from the canal, overlooking a very attractive, quaint and safe community garden. We worked very closely with Kier Group PLC (one of the largest regional builders in the UK) and ALU Installations (a leading installer of non-combustible decking and cladding systems in the UK) to deliver this very important remediation project. The timber boards on the walkways and balconies along the facade and the waterfront were replaced with our BalcaSmart® Aluminium and TerraSmart® Aluminium systems, which are ideal for remediation, new-build, and refurbishment projects. The refurbishment project was completed this year, delivering peace of mind to residents and owners alike, especially after the Grenfell Tower fire and changes to fire safety regulations.Installed with great care and attention to detail, seamlessly meeting stairwells and other structural elements, our BalcaSmart and TerraSmart Aluminium systems complement the overall aesthetics of the building, are lightweight, long-lasting, and most importantly able to meet the load requirements of its walkways, which also form part of the fire escape routes. Both BalcaSmart and TerraSmart Aluminium systems carry our IGNO mark of assurance for non-combustibility and reassure specifiers by way of a 30-year warranty and a 60-year design life (when used as part of a complete RYNO IGNO system).

Delivering a stylish, solid and compliant solution for luxury living The challenge: Matching Luxury with Safety in High-End Apartments Berkeley Group St. Edward embarked on an ambitious project: Bankside Gardens, a prestigious development in Reading featuring lakefront apartments and landscaped gardens. Designing balconies and terraces that embodied elegance while adhering to stringent fire safety regulations was paramount. They needed a balcony solution that was stylish, solid and compliant, offering the peace of mind essential for luxury living. Finding a balance between aesthetics and fire safety can be a challenge for specifiers and developers. RYNO's non-combustible decking systems ensure safety compliance without sacrificing design possibilities. The solution: The TerraSmart® Aluminium Decking System - The Perfect Fit St. Edward's search for a reliable supplier led them to RYNO. After a quick and informative discovery call, RYNO recommended the TerraSmart® Aluminium Decking system. This innovative system ticked all the boxes:Unmatched Safety: IGNO Mark of Assurance guaranteed non-combustible performance, providing peace of mind.Third-Party Verification: UKAS accredited testing ensured the system met the highest safety and quality standards.Design Flexibility: A vast array of decking board and component combinations allowed for achieving the desired aesthetic. Two days after the discovery call, our team paid a visit to the Bankside Gardens site office. Calvin and Dale from RYNO brought with them a mock-up sample of the TerraSmart system, allowing all stakeholders to see and feel the product first-hand. This hands-on approach ensured everyone was on the same page regarding design and functionality. Collaborative Problem-Solving: Addressing Every Detail Over the next few weeks, open communication and collaboration were key. When Delineate Design Limited were appointed for installation, it was the first time they had used the TerraSmart system, so the RYNO team worked closely with them and the St. Edward team to address every detail throughout the process. This comprehensive support ensured a smooth and successful installation.Accommodating Weight Requirements: Balcony weight limitations were discussed, and the TerraSmart system's lightweight properties were confirmed as a perfect fit.Addressing Wind Concerns: The risk of wind uplift and furniture movement on balconies was a crucial consideration. RYNO's solution? The ingenious FA Furniture Anchor. This easy-to-install, stainless steel anchor securely fastens furniture to the decking, preventing windblown mishaps and ensuring safety on balconies and terraces.Optimizing Edge Details and Interfaces: RYNO collaborated with the design team to ensure smooth transitions between the decking system and adjoining surfaces, creating a clean and aesthetically pleasing finish.Maximizing Efficiency: RYNO's expertise in system design came into play. We shared best practices for layout optimization to ensure efficient use of space and materials.Minimizing Waste: Sustainability is a priority at RYNO. We provided recommendations to minimize offcuts and wastage during installation, reducing environmental impact and reducing the material costs on the project.Ensuring a Flawless Finish: To guarantee a perfect end result, we collaborated on a plan for addressing any minor snags or imperfections that might arise during installation, ensuring a flawless final product.Overcoming the Roof Access Challenge: The project presented a unique challenge: the cage used to lift materials to the roof areas had a limited length of 3200mm. To accommodate this all the decking boards were pre-cut to 3000mm to ensure they fit within the cage constraints, avoiding delays and ensuring a smooth installation process. Real Results: Achieving a Stunning and Peaceful Outdoor SpaceWith meticulous planning and clear communication, RYNO ensured a smooth production process and delivery according to Delineate's installation schedule. The TerraSmart system's ease of use allowed for a swift and successful installation phase. The final product speaks for itself. The Challenge: Overcoming Complex Decking Remediation at Gemini ParkReplacing non-compliant decking on existing structures often presents significant challenges, and the Gemini Park project was no exception. The complexity of the project stemmed from several key factors:Original Design Limitations:The steel frames of the balconies were originally designed to accommodate timber joists, offering flexibility but severely limiting the options for alternative, more compliant materials.Span and Cantilever Requirements:The new decking needed to span large distances and overhang building edges, a requirement that added to the structural demands.Structural Inconsistencies:There were variations in balcony build-ups and discrepancies between the original plans and the actual construction, which further complicated the installation process.Faced with these challenges, the client sought a reliable aluminium decking solution that could meet these stringent requirements while restoring the residents’ peace of mind. The Solution: A Tailored Aluminium Decking SystemTo address the complex challenges presented by the Gemini Park project, the Ryno team developed a customized solution using components from the BalcaSmart Aluminium Decking System. This tailored approach was designed to navigate the project’s specific obstacles effectively.DFB150-DR Aluminium Decking Board:The centre piece of the solution was the innovative DFB150-DR Aluminium Decking Board. This board offers a 1500mm span capacity and integrated drainage within a compact 40mm profile. By allowing perpendicular installation, it significantly reduced the material and labour requirements, making the solution both cost-effective and efficient.T Aluminium Support Rail:The T25 Aluminium Support Rail was selected to replace the existing timber batons. Its design enables quick and secure attachment to steel frames, providing a robust and reliable alternative to timber that meets the necessary compliance standards.DS Aluminium Joist System:To recreate the flexibility of the original timber framing and achieve precise height alignment with door thresholds, the DS Aluminium Joist was used in combination with ADC Joist Support Cleats and JH Joist Hangers. This system offered the necessary adaptability to address the structural inconsistencies and ensure a seamless integration with the existing balcony structures.Achieving Success Through Tailored SolutionsThis tailored approach, informed by RYNO’s extensive experience in decking remediation, successfully transformed the balconies at Gemini Park. The use of the BalcaSmart® Aluminium Decking System not only met the project’s challenging span and cantilever requirements but also overcame the structural inconsistencies with precision. The result was a safe, compliant, and aesthetically pleasing decking solution that restored the residents’ peace of mind and ensured long-term satisfaction. The success of the Gemini Park project highlights the importance of customized solutions in overcoming complex construction challenges and achieving high-quality outcomes in remediation projects.A word from Gemini Park Freehold Ltd“We selected RYNO simply for the solidity of the build. RYNO could provide us exactly what we wanted with the solidity we wanted. This was a really easy process. The supply chain from manufacture through to fitting was a pleasure to have to deal with because there was nothing to have to deal with!
