We realised that, with the right design, this industrial-looking farm building could be transformed into a light-filled, airy sanctuary for our family," shared Vanessa Jones.Uniquely Integrated DesignCampbell Jackson Architects approached the conversion with a focus on celebrating the structure's grand scale, shape, and utilitarian simplicity."Our philosophy is to create buildings that are harmonious and appropriate for their surroundings, revealing the distinctive qualities of each project. In this case, we aimed to maintain the barn's unassuming presence within the rural landscape while welcoming the stunning views into its light-filled interior spaces," explained Jamie Campbell. The original concrete hardstanding served as the footprint for the new design, with the core steel framework supporting a metal-clad roof. Tata Steel

Deeside Leisure Centre is the National Centre for Ice Sports in Wales, and during a major building envelope refurbishment utilised TATA Steel Transpired Solar Collectors as part of its renewable energy transformation to improve buildign performance and reduce operational costs in order to reduce the centre's carbon footprint. The south-facing elevation of the leisure centre was over-clad with a Trisobuild® C32 profile as part of the Colorcoat Renew SC® solar air heating system. Using 216m2 of Colorcoat Prisma® in Slate Grey, the micro-perforated Trisobuild® C32 fascia was installed easily over the existing insulated wall cladding. Trisobuild® R32 profile manufactured from Colorcoat Prisma® in Oyster was additionally installed over the leisure centre’s existing roof cladding. In its first full year of operation at Deeside Leisure Centre, Colorcoat Renew® delivered 47 MWh of heat. This equates to 218kWh per square metre of the installed solar collector area. By gaining fuller experience of system control and operation, Deeside Leisure Centre personnel in conjunction with Tata Steel were able to extend the Colorcoat Renew SC® system operating hours to optimise use of the available solar radiation. In its second full year of operation the system delivered approximately 53 MWh of renewable heat energy at an average yield of 244kWh per square metre per year. This means that over a two-year period the Colorcoat Renew SC® system delivered an average of 50MWh of energy per year at conversion efficiencies (solar energy to useable heat energy) averaging in excess of 70%.

At the end of last year, to reflect changing requirements, the central library in the KAP 1 cultural centre opened its doors on Konrad-Adenauer-Platz 1.Located directly in front of the railway station, this library extends across two floors with a total surface area of about 8000 m², attracting visitors young and old to browse, learn and linger. The ceiling design for the rectangular vestibule area presented a particular challenge to the renovation of this former postal service site. This called for a product that delivered precisely fitting angles while also bringing sufficient daylight into the library. An optimum daylight solution was provided by durlum.Made of highly reflective aluminium, these visually prestigious panels direct daylight effectively into the interior, contributing to the feel-good factor for visitors. The easy-to-install sprung system can either present a seamless appearance without joints, or can provide contrasting accentuation with visible joints. It was therefore possible to highlight this uniform ceiling pattern with joints 13 mm in width for light integration. There are also no obstacles to any revision work that may be required. The panels are quick and easy to swivel downwards and remove. Here, the position of individual elements is defined by the indexed mounting.

Sotech Ltd

1,500/M2 3mm Aluminium 1050 Grade H14 in Optima FC and Optima TFC systems has been used in the completion of the striking Onyx Building, Lancaster Circus in Birmingham. Optima FC was selected as the client required a hook-on cladding system with secret fixings for the main extent of the face. Optima TFC was then used in a mechanical fix for the slatted window cover panels due to barrier loading requirements. The building, which has been designed to achieve a BREEAM Excellent rating, comprises of two bold, angular towers with sharply defined ‘razor’ edges and a smooth, highly detailed, gloss black finish, rising 13 and 24 storeys respectively. The towers are anchored by a middle section rising to 10 storeys and finished with a traditional, matt brick with defined window reveals and texture. The Optima FC & Optima TFC systems were used with bespoke detailing where the main façade (Optima FC Hook On) met with a slatted window cover panel (Optima TFC).Sotech and Axalta Coatings created colour matches to Alucobond 887 & Alucobond 888 Metallics to allow this project to proceed via a powder coating route. Now available for students, the 1025 building occupies one of the most prominent sites in the heart of Birmingham City, positioned between Vesey Street, Lench Street and New Town Row.TESTIMONIALSJamie Smith, Estimator:“It’s an eye catching building in a busy area of Birmingham. Woodholm Curved Metal Finish Roof

Polyroof Products Ltd

At Polyroof, we take pride in providing innovative liquid roofing solutions that meet the unique needs of our clients. From project conception to completion, our expertise lies in creating high-performance roofing systems that offer both durability and aesthetic appeal. This case study highlights our collaboration with Woodholm, a picturesque property located in Southerness, constrained by the Dumfries & Galloway Council Planning’s “room in the roof” design. The SolutionWoodholm’s owners were determined to create a home that would evolve organically while adhering to the council’s planning regulations. To achieve their vision, they enlisted the services of David Lamb Architectural Services to submit a Planning Application on their behalf, seeking approval for a modification from an existing apex roof design to a curved roof. After going through the rigorous process, the application successfully obtained full Planning Committee approval on 14 February 2017.To realise their desired construction, Woodholm’s owners had a preference for using wood and oak, aiming to incorporate these elements into the design. To accomplish this, they collaborated with Carpenter Oak Woodland, a renowned timber construction company known for their expertise in oak framed structures. The company skillfully designed an oak framed structure that perfectly met the owners’ requirements. By mid-November 2017, Woodholm had a stunning and aesthetically pleasing frame in place. However, finding an ideal roofing solution proved to be a challenging task for Woodholm. Initially considering a zinc roof, they encountered obstacles due to the prohibitive costs and the challenges posed by their maritime environment, as Woodholm is located directly on the shores of the Solway Firth. It was at this point that David Lamb’s initial positive impression of a roofing product caught their attention. Woodholm’s owners approached Polyroof’s simulated metal finishes with their needs and were introduced to the Polyroof technical team. The team guided them through the necessary technical specifications to meet the Scottish Building Warrant for a Warm Roof, ensuring compliance with the required standards.Fortuitously, Woodholm’s owners discovered that Polyroof would be exhibiting at the “Homebuilding & Renovating Show” from 21-22 October 2017. At the event, they had the opportunity to meet the Polyroof team as well as Contractor, Kenny Scott of LK Roofing, Lochmaben. The Woodholm team was highly impressed and reassured by the collective experience, knowledge, and technical expertise demonstrated by Polyroof and LK Roofing. Equally important, they appreciated their ability to attentively listen to and understand their concerns.Following the show, a site meeting was promptly arranged with LK Roofing, allowing all parties to discuss the project in detail. As a result, a comprehensive and competitive quotation was provided, falling comfortably within Woodholm’s budgetary requirements.By early December 2017, Woodholm’s joiner had installed the sub-decking, which served as the foundation for the roofing system. LK Roofing then expertly applied the Alutrix membrane, a high-quality waterproofing layer, providing Woodholm with a watertight working cover. Thanks to our collaborative efforts with Woodholm, the project achieved a seamless integration of their desired curved roof design, wood and oak elements, and our advanced liquid roofing system. Woodholm’s owners were delighted with the final result—a beautiful, organically evolving home that not only met their needs but also exceeded their expectations. At Polyroof, we are dedicated to providing roofing solutions that offer both outstanding performance and stunning aesthetics. The Woodholm case study is a testament to our commitment to delivering innovative products and excellent customer service, tailored to meet the unique requirements of each project.

Powdertech (Corby) Ltd

Overview Cladding on a student accommodation block needed replacing to comply with current standard and regulations. Our powder coating finishes passed stringent tests.Location: Bournemouth      Sector: Education/Residential.   Client: Metalline.  Specification: C4M Urban, A2,s1-d0  Main Contractor: Starfish   Area coated: 6000sq m.The RequirementExisting cladding on a student accommodation block at Bournemouth University International College needed replacing to comply with current standards and regulations, key amongst which is the ‘Reaction to Fire’ rating, A2, s1-d0. Also important was the need to impact futureproofing of the building by improving the building façade lifespan in its exposed coastal site, close to the Bournemouth seafront. The designers proposed a robust replacement system, which, on completion, would exceed current high-rise cladding legislation. More detail on this project can be found on the Starfish website HERE.The Powdertech Solution‘Peat Fire’, a finish from our Rust collection, a Powdertech Wood Finish shade and a RAL shade were selected by the client to be used across the building façade. These were applied as marine grade with great attention paid to metal protection pre-treatment.The building owners insisted on complete and independent fire testing of all the chosen products for the cladding. A fire barrier system was set up in Belfast under a BS 8414 testing criteria, to be conducted before acceptance of the proposed design and fixing solution. The three Powdertech finishes selected by the client were all pre-tested on the Metalline aluminium cladding and final inspection readings demonstrated full compliance. Meeting with the main contractor, Starfish, and Metalline ensured a good level of understanding and communication throughout the project.Read more on our powder coating and reaction to fire regulations HERE Why Powdertech? We offer a wide range of unique finishes; those chosen here provided the popular ‘aged and weathered’ look. All finishes are rated A2, s1-d0 for reaction to fire. Our finishes offerExcellent corrosion protection and weather resistanceHigh level of colour and gloss retention and high performance abrasion resistanceFinishes conform to BS EN 12206-1 and Qualicoat specificationsA 25-year warranty was provided for all three finishes used in this project with an expected 40-year lifespan.

FIREFLY® Titan Lite™ Protects Manchester Food Processing Plant

FIREFLY® Titan Lite™ Protects Manchester Food Processing Plant

FIREFLY™ TBA

An 18 month long fit-out contract for a Tewkesbury based cladding specialist has seen the company install thousands of square metres of FIREFLY® barriers, to protect the roof space and other voids within a major new food processing plant in the Manchester area. Cold Clad Ltd. was appointed by the main contractor to install all of the internal wall panels, suspended ceilings and the kerbing, as well as carrying out the installation of the vertical fire protection barriers using Titan Lite™ 120:60 and Collaroll, which were secured across light gauge steel subframes to provide two hours integrity and 60 minutes insulation.  Aligning with the nearest roof purlin to secure the frames assembled from 50 x 50mm steel angles, Cold Clad created barriers ranging in height from three metres down to less than one metre. While also accommodating the movement requirement of the large metal structure. Cold Clad’s Contract Manager for the project, Ross Camberley, commented: “The scale of the installation meant we had up to 30 operatives involved on the work for most of the period, many of whom had undergone the training course delivered by FIREFLY®, which I also took in order to be able to understand the complexities of erecting the ‘triple curtain’, and also protect all of the penetrations such as steel beams and building services.  While this was a very challenging project due to the scale of the work – and also my first experience of the FIREFLY® range – we are about to carry out another contract in Holyhead for a different client and will actually be using another of the manufacturer’s approved installers to do the work.”  FIREFLY® Titan Lite™ 120:60 is a lightweight flexible fire barrier designed to provide fire compartmentation of larger concealed spaces and voids within buildings, offering 120 minutes Integrity and 60 minutes insulation.  Manufactured from woven and non-woven glass, the FIREFLY® range is designed to optimise resistance to flame and smoke, as well as offer heat protection in a wide range of scenarios.  The certified barriers are easy to install horizontally or vertically using a full selection of FIREFLY® ancillary products to ensure a fully tested and certified installed system.

Striking metal door screen and matching window for Church renovation

Striking metal door screen and matching window for Church renovation

Clement Windows Group

St Paul’s Church in Leeds has been transformed with the addition of a large, bespoke steel door screen and feature steel window. The screen incorporates a pair of double doors, providing light and airiness. Both the new steel window and door set are made from Clement EB24 steel sections which include double glazed, argon filled glass units. Mark Harlow, the Vicar, said “St Paul’s Church embarked on a major refurbishment of their 60 year old building to make a warm and welcoming, adaptable space while keeping to the original architect’s ideas. A key part of the brief was to widen the entrance corridor and allow light into one end. This has all been more than achieved using Clement’s metal frame windows and doors. These have helped create an additional space for people to meet and mix. The narrow profile of the frames has allowed maximum light and visual access between the spaces, while the rhythm of the glazing bars both modernise and blend with the architecture of the main worship space.” Architect Tom Robbins of Pearce Bottomley Architects commented: “We have worked with Clement on a number of projects and have been very pleased with the service we have received and the quality of their products. They supplied the steel framed glazed screen and feature window at St Paul’s Church, Ireland Wood, Leeds and we couldn’t have been happier with the result. We also specify Clement’s conservation rooflights whenever we can, as we are of the opinion that they are the best on the market.”

Vincent Timber Ltd

Did you know Vincent Timber supplied both these clubs with their cladding and louvres?BurnleyBurnley Football Club's aim with this development was to raise the standard of their training facility to meet the Elite Player Performance Plan (EPPP) Category 1 and 2 standard of infrastructure. Together with Barnfield Construction, they achieved just this.To meet the requirements of the EPPP the build included an indoor area, allowing training to continue through all weathers, complete with a small spectator gallery; as well as multiple developments outside, including three full-sized training pitches and a further two three-quarter size pitches. The new centre was then given a unique finish, clad in four pre-coated, custom colours of Vincent Timber's Thermowood.Thermowood is a versatile timber that serves as internal and external cladding, louvres and even works in saunas thanks to its heat resistant properties.Thermowood is produced by changing the cellular structure of the softwood with a heat treatment making the wood more stable. Its durability and sustainability make Thermowood very popular.ArsenalSupplied by Vincent Timber to contractors Richardson Roofing. With the help of Vincent Timber and Richardson Roofing, Arsenal Football Club were able to transform their training ground at London Colney to provide players with the best possible facilities, at every age group of the club. The facility, featuring a new gym, 40m running track, ice baths, cryotherapy chamber and state of the art analysis and scouting suites, will not only be used by the first team players but it will also house 1st and 2nd year professionals at the academy. The beautiful exterior on the training centre is Western Red Cedar cladding. NORclad Black Painted Thermowood Timber Cladding

NORclad Black Painted Thermowood Timber Cladding

NORclad Limited

NORclad supplied nearly 7,000/LM of pre-coated Thermowood across this contemporary project in Berkhamsted.Thermowood is a great timber when it comes to applying a coating, after going through the heat treating process, the Finnish grown European Redwood/Whitewood (Scandinavian Pine/Spruce) is more stable. It is suitable in conditions of changing humidity, and its thermal insulation properties are improved, ideal for use in exposed areas such as External Timber Cladding. The heat treatment process enables the use of Scandinavian Redwood in areas requiring a service life of up to 30 years without the need for any further preservative or coating to be applied. The process removes resin from timber, as a result there is no resin leakage or “bleed” through the surface coatings. The effect of this together with the improved stability can lead to a lower maintenance requirement, combined with the application of the Sansin SDF system, which will further protect the outside of wood. The SDF product also protects the inside by allowing the timber to ‘breath’ – helping to prevent moisture from getting trapped in the wood and causing rot.

Cladding Winding Stair Case with Brushed Band Sawn Oak

Cladding Winding Stair Case with Brushed Band Sawn Oak

The Solid Wood Flooring Company

Wireworks London approached us looking for a modern industrialised Oak to clad onto a winding staircase in a beautiful London home. Amongst the options we presented was our CH-E780. This a White Oak with a brushed and band sawn surface giving it a clean yet worn texture. The rusticgrade Oak allows for some knotting to appear without it overpowering carefully detailed floorboards. These boards are finished with a commercial grade UV cured oil that makes it hard wearing and easy to maintain. This particular product has also been fitted throughout the busy, modern offices at 3 Shortlands, Hammersmith. It is easily one of our most popular surfaces and finishes.Wireworks didn’t want a separate stair nose component, instead opting for mitring the length of the boards to a 45-degree angle and jointing them together with a biscuit and high quality PVA glue. The effect is a stunning cascade of band sawn Oak which looks like it was purpose built in a specialist workshop or factory. This an excellent example of the ingenuity of the team at Wireworks and the adaptability of wood flooring.Would you like to see this type of cladding in using a herringbone parquet?
