Lead developer A2 Dominion is running the initial phase of the North West Bicester Eco town project, which has the long-term vision of providing up to 6,000 sustainable new homes and is the first of four planned Eco towns in the UK. Announced in the Government’s Planning Policy Statement in 2009, the Eco towns are designed to achieve zero carbon development and more sustainable living using the best new design and construction. The initial phase of the North West Bicester project is called the Exemplar and main contractor Wilmott Dixon has already started to build the first 94 of the 393 planned highly efficient true zero carbon homes which will create the UK's first zero carbon community that is using Rivendale Fibre Cement Slates for its roofing. Bicester Eco town was designed to achieve zero carbon development and more sustainable living using the best new design and construction. Rivendale fibre cement slates were specified for the roofs on the Exemplar phase by main contractor Wilmott Dixon. The homes are highly efficient true zero carbon homes which helped to create the UK's first zero carbon community.

Five domed design... CHALLENGE The idea of the architect was to design a building with 5 parabolic roof surfaces or domes. The unique five domed design comprises of pods finished in a range of different materials, each contributing to the development’s remit to blend into the park landscape. The biggest issue for the architect was how to connect these different materials to become a complete watertight building. SOLUTION Each dome is waterproofed using a RENOLIT ALKORPLAN system and whilst the complex is thought to be the UK’s largest timber-built geodesic project, it also demonstrates possibly the most innovative use of single ply membrane ever seen in the UK. By using the RENOLIT ALKORPLAN membrane as the main layer to waterproof the five domes an easy joint could be made by means of hot air. On one dome our RENOLIT ALKORPLAN A membrane was used in combination with PVC profiles providing geometric aesthetic detailing. On another dome a RENOLIT ALKORPLAN L membrane was used under a green roof system. On the other domes the RENOLIT ALKORPLAN F membrane was used in combination with our RENOLIT ALKORSOLAR fixing system supporting respectively glazed aluminium sheeting and cedar shingle tiles.

South Lodge is an award-winning luxury hotel in Sussex with breath-taking views of the South Downs. The client intended for the new spa building to blend in with the surrounding parkland. Bauder achieved this by specifying a wildflower, biodiverse roof. This consisted of a substrate-based system with Bauder WB native wildflower blanket. The blanket is a mix of British native plants which mirror the surrounding meadows, providing valuable ecological habitats for a mixture of wildlife.

A number of pre-existing farm structures have been reconstructed using CUPA PIZARRAS Heavy 3 slate in order to house a new Scottish whisky distillery, Ardross. Existing stone and slate from the location’s original, dilapidated farm buildings were salvaged and reused to rebuild much of the walls and roof of the development. However, Heavy 3 was selected to maintain a uniform aesthetic where the original slate could not be re-used.

Described by presenter Kevin McCloud as both “paranormal goo” and “the right solution”, ELASTOSPRAY was the only practical way to provide insulation to the corrugated metal walls without causing a condensation issue.

Austin Smith-Lord’s 50 million–pound Liverpool Central Library project opened in May 2013 after a three–year complete overhaul. The scheme, in a World Heritage Site, involved the restoration of grade I listed elements as well as the insertion of a new building behind a historic facade. It was funded by PFI. The six-storey new building is arranged around a full-height atrium crowned with a glazed dome and roof terrace.

The States of Jersey were keen to refurbish the glazed roof at Central Market, St Helier, but had to work closely with traders to ensure the minimum of disruption. Stallholders were also concerned about solar gain during hot summers. At the same time, they were wary of the usual tinted glass options that may have cast colour onto their different food markets and flowers. The natural beauty influences customers buying decisions.

Metrotile was recently used for the newly built Clubhouse at Evesham Football Club. Initially conceived in 2008, the new ground is based on a 25-acre site and is home to Evesham FC in addition to boy and girl junior teams.The roof install for the entire project was completed in just 20 working days and now provides a secure covering resistant to any stray shots on goal which would break traditional natural slates

We reglazed the porte cochere at Victoria Station using our aluminium-framed Multi-Link-Panel fitted with our Georgian wired polycarbonate glazing. This virtually unbreakable glazing mimics the traditional Georgian wired glass that would have been fitted to the three roofing areas when it was first built, but it has all the many benefits of polycarbonate, as well as Heritage approval for use at this prestigious and busy London station.

As part of the Railway Upgrade Plan, Platform 1 at Stamford Station in Lincolnshire was recently refurbished. Careful consideration resulted in the use of Twinfix Multi-Link-Panels Non-Fragile to replace the old curved corrugated roofing of the canopy and the end result is more in keeping with the original age and design of this elegant Grade II listed building. Passengers and staff are now all benefiting from the high levels of natural light that floods the platform.

Wilmcote House is located in Portsmouth which had undergone a major renovation to benefit the health and well-being of tenants.A high-rise, high-density housing estate that remains a prominent feature of Britain's urban landscape dating from the 1960's.Wilmcote House used a combination of several products and systems namely ROCKWOOL external wall and flat roof insulation together with a selection of the company's firestopping and fire protection products.

Comprising of nine shops and several residential flats, properties 29-47 High Street Polegate required a full roof refurbishment after complaints of water ingress into the residential buildings. Proteus Waterproofing conducted a thorough survey which revealed that the existing roof build up, made up of a timber deck and 2-layer felt, had been previously repaired but was now at the end of its serviceable life.Being a residential building with a combustible deck, protecting individual properties from internal fire spread was a key consideration. Compartment walls were identified allowing Proteus Waterproofing to provide a solution that would meet regulatory guidance relating to the junction of compartment walls and roofs in Approved Document B whilst meeting the needs of the client.Proteus Waterproofing specified their robust reinforced bitumen membrane range of Proteus Pro-Felt®, including a bespoke hybrid insulation approach, where instead of a full replacement consisting of entirely non-combustible insulation, a scheme was designed to meet the requirements above and either side of the compartment walls, offering the client the most cost-effective solution possible that would also mitigate any unnecessary increase of weight loading elsewhere on the roof.High Performance WaterproofingThe waterproofing and existing deck were stripped back and re- decked with 18mm plywood. When removing the existing waterproofing, our approved contractor, carefully recorded the exact location of the party walls as no drawings of the upper story flats were available.Proteus Pro-Felt® SA AVCL was used as a vapour control layer to allow for the application of the hybrid combination of 150mm Proteus Pro-Therm PIR insulation and 150mm Proteus Pro-Therm Mineral Wool insulation. A thermal calculation was undertaken to ensure that the final result met the requirements of Part L of the National Building Regulations. These were both adhered with Proteus Pro-Bond Foaming Adhesive. Proteus Pro-Felt® SA Underlay Plain was laid and finished with Proteus Pro-Felt® Ultima Plus Fireguard Mineral Capsheet, providing the client with a fully waterproofed Part B and Part L compliant roof, guaranteed for 20 years.Proteus Waterproofing worked closely with the Proteus Approved Contractor, to ensure the project was delivered to a high standard.Health & SafetyWhen working on occupied buildings, safety is always of utmost importance, as well as keeping disruptions to a minimum. Recently we have received a review from a customer that used Polytrol to revive their Ifor Williams horsebox.Andy was looking to revive the faded colour of his Ifor Williams horsebox and decided to try a sample of our Polytrol colour restorer. He even supplied us with before and after images so we can see how well it worked.Here’s what Andy had to say;I have been an Engineer all my life and have used many products that purport to do unequalled repair or unrivalled transformations. But I cannot remember ever being so impressed with a product.After using the sample pot of Polytrol colour restorer I thought to take some pictures of the project. The whole trailer was thoroughly cleaned with a pressure washer along with the roof and fibre glass front roof panel. Mould and algae were removed with a scrubbing brush and Cillit Bang mould remover.The side panels are painted flat aluminium sheet which had faded quite considerably over the years. Their appearance was also marred by a previous owner putting transfers on them, which I removed only to discover a darker silhouette, which further spoiled its appearance.To the painted panels, I applied Polytrol liberally with a brush and then left for 15 Mins. After this, I then used a cloth soaked with Polytrol but with excess squeezed out, to smooth out the excess on the surface and provide an even light coating to dry. I treated the plastic mudguards the same way with fabulous results.For the “dimple” surfaced aluminium roof and front panel, I found a Scotchbrite pad and soaked it with Polytrol. I then wiped it off once again with a saturated cloth and left it to dry.I applied the Polytrol on a pleasant day with no excessive sunshine and all was touch dry within 2 hours. By the following day it was perfectly dry and ready for new OEM Decals.The pictures show it all, what an outstanding transformation.

Continuing our relationship with Renaker Build Ltd and following specification from TPM Landscapes, Artform Urban Furniture have supplied a full range of standard and bespoke planters including seating elements to Deansgate Square apartment towers in Manchester. The apartment buildings; Elizabeth Tower and Victoria Residence, have roof terraces that have been designed to provide exclusive private outdoor seating and dining areas combined with plenty of plants and shrubs. 

The Redrock Development, previously known as the Bridgefield site, is a new leisure destination in the heart of Stockport town centre. The Client required a range of products for this project, including the MultipliCITY seats & benches, which were supplied and manufactured under licence in the UK by Artform Urban, the Big Harris Benches which were customised with LED illumination, and two bespoke sedum roof cycle shelters. Artform provided their expert knowledge for the design and installation of these individual products.

When restoration of the UK’s last remaining open-pan salt works began, Eternit was integral to completing the £10 million industrial heritage project. Early in the design process, Eternit was consulted to assess the feasibility of using semi-compressed fibre cement profiled sheeting as roofing and cladding materials. To maintain the aesthetics of the original Lion Salt Works buildings with new products, Profile 6 and Profile 3 sheeting was used in Natural Grey.

Liquasil's BBA Approved cut edge corrosion treatment was specified for use on this metal roof on an industrial unit in central Birmingham. Liquasil SWT Primer was first applied to all rusted areas. SWT stands for "Surface and Wet Tolerant" meaning that it can be applied to wet and rusted surfaces. The primed areas were then coated with Liquasil's Flexlap - a purpose made silicone polymer coating to provide total protection from further lap corrosion.

The 10 apartment buildings of the Cerisier Residences development in Bertrange, Luxembourg are surrounded by green spaces. The balconies with glass railings make for a stunning, modern appearance. Q-railing’s Easy Glass Slim glass balustrade system was identified as the perfect fit. It's extremely cost-efficient, since it is quick and easy to install – an important factor, given that more than 1,600 metres of glass balustrade were required for outside balconies and penthouse roof terraces.

The development at The Rudding Park Hotel, Harrogate was the biggest spa project in the UK 2016/2017 and the biggest project installed by Sauna360 UK. Sauna360 installed thermal rooms, pools and plant over three levels. Lap pool, hydro pool, roof top spa, Rasul, Pool side sauna, Panoramic sauna, Luxury steam room, three feature showers, foot spas and heated benches, ice fountain and herbal bath.

All apartments are accessed at the rear of the building via stairs and walkways and the existing asphalt walkway surfaces had blistered, causing various leaks and creating a trip hazard for residents. There was an urgent requirement to carry out the walkway refurbishment while the building remained fully occupied and with minimal disruption for occupants. The building’s flat roof had also reached the end of its service life, requiring a refurbishment to protect the apartments from water ingress.

The £11.6 million regeneration scheme in Aylesbury saw a former MoD site managed by the Homes and Communities Agency (HCA) transformed into an affordable and sustainable housing development, comprising 94 terraced houses and apartment blocks forming a continuous curved building. Named ‘The Serpentine’, this snaking housing project called for a flexible roofing solution! Sika Sarnafil single ply was specified for its flexibility and suitability to tricky detailing but the shape posed a number of technical challenges.

Vitral, now part of VELUX Commercial, manufactured and delivered a number of its bespoke daylight solutions to the intu Metrocentre in Gateshead. Seeking to maximise the daylighting potential, CDA Group considered the VELUX Glazing Panels, previously known as Vitral A74 roof glazing, the most appropriate solution as they could be tailored to suit the project. They offered several key benefits, which included their suitability to be self-supporting, thereby reducing the need for additional structure.

The owners of this property wanted to maximise their outside space but also create a calming relaxing feel while sitting in their garden in London. By using GreenCoat PLX Pro Mountain Grey they were able to match their bifold door colour so the whole extension worked together. Rather than a traditional standing seam the installer handmade these shingles creating a very different finish. These shingles were also replicated for the Roof as can be seen in the background.

Flooring specialists Laceys Floors and Walls have used UltraFloor Level IT Hydra Bond to install 170sqm of flooring at Rushcliffe Country Park.BackgroundGreen Flag award winners since 2007, Rushcliffe Country Park is a popular visitor attraction in Nottinghamshire. Work is currently underway to renovate the visitor centre including staff office and toilets.The ChallengeExpert flooring specialists, Laceys Floors and Walls were the contractors commissioned to install 170sqm of flooring throughout the visitor centre. To complete the installation, Laceys Floors and Walls needed subfloor materials that would provide a super smooth finish to avoid any trip hazards and would withstand constant trafficking of visitors.The SolutionTo begin, Laceys Floors and Walls applied DPM IT damp proof membrane across the entire 170sqm area. DPM IT is a two component, solvent free epoxy resin system for use as a surface damp proof membrane. Designed to provide protection against subfloor moisture, DPM IT has a pot life of 45 – 75 minutes, a cure time of 5 hours and boasts a 98% RH floor moisture tolerance.Once fully cured, the team applied UltraFloor’s latest product innovation, Level IT Hydra Bond to a depth of 3-5mm.Level IT Hydra Bond is a super polymer modified smoothing compound which utilises UltraFloor’s unique technology – a process which enhances application and boasts unrivalled flow properties. What’s more, each bag of Level IT Hydra Bond also contains 20% recycled material.In addition, Level IT Hydra Bond can receive bonded floor coverings after 4 hours, has an extended working time of 45 minutes for optimal usability, and is moisture tolerant and protein free.To complete the project, Polysafe Wood FX and Verona flooring was installed throughout the visitor centre, office and toilets.ResultsThe flooring was installed with ease and Rushcliffe County Park’s exciting new visitor centre is due to open later this year.“Level IT Hydra Bond was a real pleasure to work with. A global construction, energy and infrastructure organisation required a durable, chemical resistant floor coating solution with an anti-slip profile that would withstand the daily wear and tear of its internal vehicle repair and maintenance facility. VINCI Construction is part of VINCI Group, a multinational enterprise with operations in the energy, infrastructure and construction industries. Founded in 1899, the company now has a presence in over 120 countries with a global team of around 220,000 people. The Widnes facility is one of ten VINCI Construction UK locations and houses, among other facilities, a vehicle maintenance workshop where the company ensures their fleet of general and specialist vehicles. The industrial unit that houses the workshop previously had a concrete paving slab floor that proved to be uneven, unsafe, and difficult to maintain.  Not only did the new flooring solution need to address these concerns, it also needed to be both slip and chemical resistant as well as feature clearly marked automotive bays and provide enough durability to withstand frequent wheeled traffic as well as the impact of dropped tools and the weight of heavy equipment. Installed in a combination of RAL 7037 Dusty Grey and RAL 6024 Traffic Green, vebrores EP HBC was installed across the 332 m2 vehicle workshop, with the Traffic Green used to mark out the facility’s six automotive bays, before being outlined using vebrodeck PU Linemarker in Yellow. Prior to the installation of vebrores EP HBC SR – a system comprising an initial layer of vebro EP Primer followed two coats of vebro EP Universal with a broadcast of 52 mesh silica sand after the first coat for an anti-slip profile – the pre-existing concrete paving slabs were first coated with an epoxy DPM and a 20.0 mm screed to level the surface. vebrores EP HBC SR is a pigmented, solvent-free, slip-resistant high build epoxy floor coating system that is best suited to floors in medium duty processing areas where a textured, hard-wearing, chemical resistant finish is required. Available in a wide range of BS 4008 or RAL matched shades, the system is ideally suited to areas where there is a need for navigational demarcation and zoning. 

The Cambridge University Faculty of History required a solution to level the existing flat roofs of the historical Stirling Building. The aim was to create a vibrant and attractive area, mainly used as a throughway, it was paramount that the tiles would match the existing colour of the surrounding building.Our Castlepave GRC Promenade slab (450x450x38mm) was selected, and a custom-made colour was created to blend effectively into the existing architecture. We manufactured various test batches each with a different shade of red, and hand finished aged effect. Once the colour was selected from the various test batches, they were manufactured by hand to the customers specification and delivered to site.We assessed the fall and height tolerances of the roof to determine the number and size of pedestals required to provide a completely level finish. Adjustable Pedestals ranging from 30-120mm,10mm fixed height stackable pedestals, levelling shims, and self-levelling heads were used.The outer row of slabs was cut to size on site, using a circular saw. As shown the results are a flush finish that minimizes the gaps between the slabs and the exterior perimeter. The glass reinforced concrete composition of the slabs mean they are strong and easy to work with on site.The Client was very happy with this stylish and unique finish.

The award winning new Vijay Patel building is the bold centerpiece of DMU’s £136million campus transformation project. The tower houses all of the university’s art and design faculties under one roof – so it’s only fitting that the surrounding landscaping should reflect the creative nature of the students using it.The project was made up of three main areas which had multi-uses – the Arts Tower development, the Design Wing and the Food Court. Other changes include open parkland along Mill Lane leading to the edge of the River Soar, creating a new gateway connecting the city’s West End to the city centre. One of the main advantages of the new campus is that it brings all the different areas, under one roof, making it a lot more accessible and convenient for the for the students.Designer Plincke Manchester blended a range of Marshalls paving products to create different textures within the landscape, which help to delineate multi-use spaces.Different sizes of the new Modal paving, part of the internationally recognised La Linia range have been juxtaposed, with long flag units used to complement the lines of the central tower and smaller Conservation X Setts to designate walkways.

Optima FC in 3.0mm PPC Aluminium 1050 grade has been used in the completion on The Power Electronics, Machines and Control (PEMC) Research Group on Nottingham University's Jubilee Campus.Home to three purpose-built labs – High Power, Power Electronics, and Drives – the building was built after PEMC secured investment of £18million, including £1.5m from the Wolfson Foundation and £4m from Propulsion Futures.The 5,400m² development is internationally renowned and one of the largest on its field.FEA analysis was carried out by Sotech as non-standard sheets were used due to the sheer size of some panels. The purpose was to ensure enough stiffening resistance had been built into the sheets, to ensure the larger panels were safe and compliant.The project was completed during the first lockdown (due to Covid 19) meaning operations were paused during the project. Sotech and Deane Roofing worked closely together to keep as tightly as possible to the original timeline.Josh Stevens, Estimator at Sotech said: “This was my first project working with Deane Roofing, which was an absolute pleasure. The project ran smoothly from start to finish, and I think the end product looks fantastic.”

As part of cultural regeneration of the Olympia Exhibition Venue, Olympia Central Hall has been demolished and the iconic structures of Olympia National and Olympia Grand, both Grade II listed buildings, are being incorporated into the site’s overall redevelopment. The West Hall Exhibition Space is being structurally strengthened to allow for a two-story music venue to be constructed above the existing exhibition hall.It is necessary to isolate the Central building, originally known as Empire Hall, from the West Hall performance space to prevent music and entertainment noise disturbance.Three massive bearing assemblies comprising solid thick steel plates holding Stravibase VHS bearings, which were pre-compressed using our patented frozen bearing technology.A small mock-up (approx. 1/3 of the size) was also constructed, and fire tested at Liege University, comfortably achieving a two-hour fire rating.Music and entertainment noise breakout from this new venue causing disturbance to residents.A custom designed Stravifloor Deck solution with rubber bearings isolating the concrete roof flab from the structure below. This complex floating roof is laid to multiple falls by using supporting rails that are tapered to suit.

Tew Farmhouse and Barns, Oxfordshire was a conversion of a Grade II listed farmhouse into six luxury holiday lets.Working to the client's brief, the Architectural Designers at Charlie Luxton Design scoped out the design of the luxury accommodation to achieve a high-quality finish whilst retaining the idyllic barn-like character.The rooflights needed to align with the design concept externally, integrating seamlessly with the zinc roof, whilst contributing to the airy and light interior design. Neo Rooflights were selected for their frameless interior and edge-to-edge glazing technology to maximise the viewable space and flood the top floor rooms with natural daylight.The technical design team at The Rooflight Co helped to marry vision to solution by creating a bespoke baseplate that provided the level of detail required to ensure the rooflights work alongside the roof, not simply sit within in. The technical team also advised egress Neo Rooflights to provide a means of suitable fire escape access and ensure the buildings conformed with building regulations.The Neo Rooflight demonstrated its suitability to be used within the Grade II listed farmyard within the context of it originally being a historic non-domesticated building. The rooflights were not only practical within the design, but the appearance was in keeping with the aesthetics of the times.
