A.J Wells manufactured three hundred square meters of coloured vitreous enamel cladding covering a lift shaft in the new students centre at the London School of Economics and Political Science on its Aldwych campus.The striking building, known as the Saw Swee Hock Student Centre (SAW), was designed by Dublin based practice O’Donnell & Tuomey Architects with the aim to transform the student social experience by creating a student hub at the heart of LSE’s campus. The centre houses a number of student facilities and offices including a gym, media centre, internet cafe and a pub!Vitreous enamel was specified for the external cladding of the lift shaft because of its durability, low maintenance and unique, vibrant surface finish.

The Riverside development in Rochdale includes two nine storey apartment blocks comprising a mix of 240 one- and two-bedroom properties for private rent. The Rochdale town centre Riverside regeneration project also includes a 147-bedroom hotel and 43,000 square feet of office space. The Fire regulations which apply to high-rise living accommodation meant that the kitchens in the apartments would require a fire suppression unit complete with sprinklers to be fitted. These units need to be installed and maintained by a specialist engineer and can also cause damage within a property should they be activated due to a fire.  Therefore, the Firechief Kitchen Stove Guard was chosen as an alternative, unobtrusive design-led fire prevention solution.

Our Healthline range of furniture was chosen for this installation, with worktops in colour G075 Gris Centre, handles in chrome and carcases in white.

The three-part complex – consisting of the 153.8-metre Skyper high-rise with 39 floors, the neoclassical Skyper Villa from 1915 and the Skyper Carrée – offers a total of 53,900 m2 of office space for numerous companies and banks. When the existing single access entry systems were dismantled in the summer of 2020 as part of renovation work on the foyer, the owner opted for a new, modern solution that would blend in perfectly with the architecture of the skyscraper. Every day, large numbers of people go the foyer to get to their workplace. Numerous visitors also pass through this area. This called for a solution combining functionality, safety and an appealing design.

The Fforestfach site is a busy passenger transport depot for the Local Authority, managed by the Place Directorate, serving a variety of users. Severely weathered and corroded, the original 1,800 sqm roof on the depot comprised of old asbestos corrugated sheets that had degraded over the years, to the point that heavy rain resulted in overflowing gutters and severe internal leaks to the building. Garland UK Technical Manager, Dale Thomas, was asked by the Swansea Councils Property Maintenance team to carry out a full detailed roof survey and specify a waterproofing solution that would overcome the existing asbestos challenges of the depot roof and upgrade the external site offices, whilst minimising any disruption to the daily operations of the active depot.

The original fibre cement roof with badly yellowing old-style roof lights had deteriorated and suffered storm damage; the owners decided that a cost-effective new roof was required.

For all the meeting rooms, remote controlled integrated venetian blinds allow additional privacy as required. p100 also ensures all meeting rooms meet high acoustic performance requirements. Planet Partitioning also installed FireStop fire-rated glass partitioning to meet fire regulations throughout the building.

Tobermore Deliver Striking Finish for New Business Quarter in Leatherhead.Tobermore provided HLM Architects with a variety of paving products that were used to create the striking landscape at The Square, an exciting business quarter in Leatherhead, Surrey. The Square comprises four impressive office buildings that total 68,851 sq. ft. in size and the project is the first development in the South East to achieve an EPC A rating.Joe Harries, Associate at HLM Architects, explained that his aim in designing The Square was “to create a contemporary office environment within a high quality and attractive landscape setting.”Joe commented that different hard landscaping solutions were considered for the project but paving was chosen as the superior solution:“We were looking for a range of quality products that were robust, aesthetically pleasing and cost effective, and we found that Tobermore were ahead of their peers in this area of the market.”Joe Harries, Associate at HLM ArchitectsIt was these factors that convinced HLM Architects to specify Tobermore Manhattan, Sienna Duo and Shannon Duo block paving products in creating a high quality finish for the site.Manhattan is a plank paving product that is manufactured with a granite aggregate surface layer that produces a sparkling finish, similar to natural granite.Manhattan mixed length units were selected in the colours of Silver, Mid Grey and Graphite for the main area on site. This signature blend is part of Tobermore’s Constellations and has been named ‘Pavo’. Discover more about Tobermore’s Constellations. Similar to Manhattan, Sienna Duo is manufactured with a granite aggregate surface layer. Sienna was installed in the rich colour of Sandstone on the parking bays, creating a striking, modern look alongside Manhattan.Shannon Duo in the warm, blended tones of Heather was installed on the walkways surrounding the four office buildings on site. In contrast to the other Tobermore products specified, this product is manufactured with a smooth surface layer that is ideal for pedestrian use and wheeled traffic.Joe explained the design concept developed with Tobermore products: “The colour, texture and unit sizes were varied to create unique character and function to the main circulatory and recreational spaces, providing a strong sense of arrival leading up to the central square that forms the heart of the development.“Conceptually, we tried to create a contemporary, inspiring and inviting centralised hard landscaped amenity enclosed by both proposed and existing soft landscape infrastructure. This formal epicentre is the main focus of the scheme, with a large and striking public art feature, high quality paving, seating and subtle lighting. From this the landscape character gradates out to the informal and ecologically enhanced edges of the site, with extensive amenity planting used to break up the car parking areas in between.”Reflecting on the result of project, Joe commented; “The hard landscaping products used worked well and we were extremely pleased with the service provided by Tobermore.For good quality concrete and granite aggregate paving, Tobermore must be considered as one of the market leaders in terms of quality of product, service and competitiveness.”

Their showroom at Dublin’s Citywest is one of the largest of its kind in Europe showcasing all their kitchen and consumer appliance brands.The ChallengeAfter conducting a survey of the 1,000m2 roof, it was determined that the areas of the roof, specifically the office area, were in need of repair. Some areas of the original roof build-up were starting to leak and lap joints failing due to a poor install.Following the site survey and adhesion tests, a site-specific specification was produced for the client and contractor to overview once all parties were happy with the proposals. With some complex detailing work involved, a decision was made to overlay the existing roof build with Polyroof Protec System.The SolutionPolyroof’s Protec System, a hybrid polymer liquid system with extremely fast curing and installation times, was the chosen system of use for the project. Due to its fully cold-applied application, the works could be carried out during working hours, with little disruption to the office staff below and little working time lost for the client.IPRS Limited, an experienced roofing and panel repair contractor and Polyroof Approved Contractor, were chosen to undertake the work on the project. Firstly, before any work could begin, the original waterproofing of the office roof was pressure-washed and cleaned down. Once all initial preparation was completed, the Protec System application could begin.All areas requiring priming before the main system application were primed and allowed to cure. Any joints were sealed using taping mat and Protec Resin and allowed to cure. Once this preparation had been completed the main Polyroof Protec System, chosen in light grey by the client, was applied.The first coat was allowed to cure before the final coat was applied. Due the Protec System Rapid Cure technology, the finished roof could be walked on after just 30-60 minutes after applications. This allowed for large roof areas to be made fully waterproof within a matter of hours. After the inspection was completed, the client received Polyroof’s trusted Accredited System Guarantee.Taking away the challenges of flat roofing projects.Polyroof’s reputation has been built on the high level of technical support provided to clients before, during and after every contract. We like to work closely with our clients from the very beginning of a flat roofing project right through to completion and throughout the lifespan of the roof. The Canada Water Masterplan is a significant urban regeneration project in Canada Water, Southeast London. Led by British Land and AustralianSuper, the Masterplan is set to transform a 53-acre site into a radiant mixed-use neighbourhood, over the coming 10-15 years. The development will see the creation of around 3,000 new net zero homes, circa one million sq. ft of retail, leisure, entertainment, education, and community spaces, and up to 2.5 million sq. ft of workspace. Furthermore, encapsulated within the 160 acres of existing green space, will be the first new London high street for a generation as part of 16 new streets across the masterplan, a new town square, and 12 acres of new open space including a 3.5-acre park.Situated on Surrey Quays Road, London, is the recently restored former Docks Office. The 120-year-old Grade II-listed building features 19th Century architecture and was once the base for the Surrey Commercial Docks which operated in the Rotherhithe Peninsular for decades. Fast forward a century and the Docks Office is now the marketing suite for residential property sales at Canada Water. The restoration project was approached sympathetically, with an overarching goal to return it to its former glory, whilst respecting its historical significance. The exposure of the building’s original brickwork pays homage to this and elegantly portrays its unique character and charm.Supporting effective people movement within the marketing suit is a Cibes C1 Pure Cabin Lift. The India Buildings is located on Water Street in the centre of Liverpool’s financial and business district. It was designed by architects Arnold Thornely and Herbert J Rowse, following a competition to design an office block which was judged by the great Sir Giles Gilbert Scott and built between 1924 and 1932 for the Blue Funnel shipping line owned by Alfred Holt.The building’s design is influenced by the Italian Renaissance style and it has several features of the American Beaux-Arts style, including for example the sculptures of cherubs above the windows.Having sustained damage during World War II the building was restored to its original state after the war under the supervision of Rowse, the original architect.In 2017, the Grade II* Listed Building was purchased by Legal & General and it was announced that HMRC would base a regional centre there. Renovation works commenced with the focus on creating modern, comfortable office space while retaining the heritage features of the building.Clement Windows Group was selected to manufacture and install the new double glazed steel windows which match the original single glazed metal windows and improve thermal performance and energy use within the historic building. Almost 1,000 windows from the Clement MW40 range were specified, polyester powder painted in RAL 9016 (White).Alex Harrison of architects Falconer Chester Hall said: “We had the pleasure of working with Clement on the steel window replacements of the India Building refurbishment project. Their performance in every aspect of the work was outstanding, and we wholeheartedly endorse them for any future contracts of a similar nature. One specific area where Clement excelled during the early stages, was the support we received from them during our discussions with the city planners regarding the bespoke windows. Their contribution proved very useful in moving matters forward and the end result is exceptional.“

The Head of Security at a prominent London University was faced with key security issues when the organisation took over the security of an old building. The large ground floor building led directly onto a public pavement and housed academic and research staff with valuable computer equipment. The Security Team needed to find a way of securing the building, especially the large windows, without replacing them entirely.Bernadette Duncan (MBE) Chief Operating Officer of AUCSO explained the options they looked into:“We considered installing bars on the windows but did not want the building to look like a jail block or draw attention to it. The staff were also concerned about the sunlight on the south facing side of the building, so we would also need to install blinds. After looking at several options we selected 𝐒𝐄𝐂𝐔𝐑𝐀𝐁𝐋𝐈𝐍𝐃𝐒® as the best option to maximise security, as well as giving the occupants the option to use the blinds on sunny days.”Bernadette went on to explain the other benefits of 𝐒𝐄𝐂𝐔𝐑𝐀𝐁𝐋𝐈𝐍𝐃𝐒®:“From the public side, the blinds looked like normal vertical blinds, so did not draw attention as a highly protected building or a potential target for thieves. In the evening when the lights were on, the blinds could be closed to provide privacy and at night time could be locked to provide a secure screen against vandalism or a forced entry. It was the ideal solution for us.“The 𝐒𝐄𝐂𝐔𝐑𝐀𝐁𝐋𝐈𝐍𝐃𝐒® team measured the windows and manufactured them for a bespoke fit. The delivery and installation timings were agreed and everything was fitted in time for the building to be occupied. The blinds gave the staff the required feeling of privacy and security, without feeling barred in. Our design motto being ‘’Design a Vision, Make an Impression, Create an Experience’’The Café element features 2 floors with the usable space spread over 827 square metres; the terrace flows from inside to out thus creating this multi-use space for all weathers.Vertical pilasters in varying forms, all designed and fabricated off site by technood to facilitate a rapid installation where labour is reduced. Cladding in the main is a simple click to install system. Severn Trent Water’s new £60m operations centre in Coventry, which aims to set new industry standards with one of the lowest carbon footprints for any UK office building, incorporates equally eco-friendly Armourcoat polished plaster.Designed by Birmingham-based Webb Gray Architects, and built by BAM Construction, this highly-sophisticated energy efficient building featuring the latest eco-technology. Designed for low-energy and low-carbon consumption, the offices include thermal adaptive cooling, biomass boilers, photovoltaic panels, solar panels and rainwater harvesting; justifiably achieving a BREEAM ‘excellent’ rating.Armourcoat was used within the reception and main atrium space, to create a stunning and original design statement. Totaling nearly four hundred square metres of hand-applied decorative plaster, Webb Gray specified colourfade artwork for feature panels and curved walls using Armourcoat Spatulata. For the 30-metre high atrium panels, artisan plasterers blended over seventy colours of paste to achieve the seamless finish. Known as ‘stucco lustro veneziano’, Spatulata is a superfine stucco paste that is trowel applied in a series of fine layers to create a highly polished decorative surface. In keeping with the eco specification, the product contains 40% pre-consumer recycled marble.The project also included the use of ‘Anti-Crack’ - an innovative substrate preparation system from Armourcoat which ensures fast-track construction and a tough, unrivalled backing for Armourcoat polished plaster wall finishes. This cost effective, skim-coat plaster is designed for application in 3-4mm layers over plasterboard surfaces. Its use eliminates the need for taping, jointing and sealing the plasterboard surface and provides a first class substrate for Armourcoat finishes.

Luxurious in design and soundThe projectCreating an imaginative and unique workplace can be a tough task often limited by the space you are working with. That was no different for the renovations undertaken at Argyll’s, previously known as LEO, ever expanding precinct. With their company expanding rapidly, they secured the top two floors of Park House—a modern mixed-use building off Oxford Street, London. Specialising in luxury executive serviced offices, they needed their new space to appeal to a high-end audience expecting elegant, sophisticated furnishings and facilities. Working with Area Design & Build, we were brought in to help bring their plans to life. With our experience of working on previous projects with Argyll, we were prepared for the client’s keen desire to think outside the box. The open, spacious layout takes full advantage of the dramatic double-height curved walls and roof, with expanses of glazing that flood the space with light. Having such a unique space to work with, Argyll wanted to create a ‘fantastic journey’ for the inhabitants, requiring acoustic solutions throughout.The solutionThe selected acoustic products used were: Horizon™ panels – Manufactured in an organic shape to work with the designer’s concept based on biophilic design. Frontier™ 24 mm baffles – Cut in a wave formation to provide acoustic absorption to a corridor space while creating a dynamic walkway to further meeting rooms. Through the use of these acoustic solutions we helped them to create an innovative design with the options best fit to not just the design brief, but also their specific work environment. These designs combine character, style and elegance with a welcoming ambience provided by modern but comfortable furniture and generous biophilic touches. The building has been stabilised with RC lift cores and RC shear walls and supported on reinforced concrete piled foundations.Cellecta’s YELOfon HD5 was specified by Pitman Tozer Architects on this project for its excellent high impact sound deadening properties ideal for a block of flats. It is a lightweight, easy to install non-crosslinked polyethylene foam.Henry Construction was awarded the 10,000m² contract to construct these modern apartments.

The BriefWates Construction contacted us in October 2017 as they were tendering for the £7.8m development at Murray Park Community School in Mickleover, Derby. The project which was supported by SCAPE and funded by the ESFA, comprised of a brand-new building with a new reception area, 15 additional classrooms and office space.The SolutionWe were invited to attend a design meeting in February 2019 to discuss a shade and shelter solution that would work well with the area and match the design whilst also being cost effective and of the highest quality. From the meeting, it was agreed by all that the Coniston Wall Mounted Canopy would be the perfect shade and shelter solution and the Langdale Cycle Shelters were the perfect product to provide the cycle coverage required.
