Office Acoustic Panels Fix Reverberation

Office Acoustic Panels Fix Reverberation

iKoustic

Office acoustic panels are the best way to fix reverberation in spaces where sound becomes noise. A lot of modern offices end up in need of acoustic panels as contemporary designs use hard surfaces, vaulted ceilings and plenty of glass. While this creates bright office spaces, they are often noisy and difficult to focus in.We partnered up with Yorkshire Soundproofing to go and treat a local office in York that was suffering from terrible reverberation issues.Acoustic problems in the officeAcoustic problems in Monitor’s offices meant people were unable to focus, take a phone call or speak with colleagues easily. These office spaces were newly decorated and refurbed, but sound hadn’t been considered in the office designs. Ultimately, the glass partition, high ceilings, hard floor and in-room kitchenette meant the space wasn’t user-friendly. Luckily, management at the company took sound seriously and decided to get the problem resolved with proper sound absorption. They chose the grey Still Note panels which come in different sizes and suited their aesthetics. They are also a superb retrospective sound design choice as they can be added to ceilings or walls and configured to fit the current space. Why acoustic panels are good in office spacesAcoustic panels are a good fit for office spaces because they can be hung from the ceiling out of the way. In this example, the office still felt light and open after the installation was finished. Acoustic panels can also be adhered directly to the walls. This was done in a smaller side office where two desks were close to a wall which increased reverberation. The acoustic panels are lightweight, which means no additional structural changes need to be made before installation. Our Still Note panels were hung from wire fixings which are adjustable to fit any ceiling height. It is best to allow a gap between the panel and the ceiling, if possible, as absorption is increased. You can see in this example that a 25cm gap was left to improve the performance of the acoustic panels. How were the panels installed? The panels were installed with a fixing and wire system which was simply screwed into the ceiling. Each acoustic panel is hung from multiple pigtail screws that are twisted into the material. This makes the panels easy to install and take down for light maintenance. It is best to spread acoustic panels around an office so that the absorption is evenly distributed. In this case study you can see that the panels go from one end to the other. We generally advise covering around 1/3 of hard surfaces, but this depends on your space and sound issues. For this example, the ceiling treatment alone was sufficient for good sound attenuation.Did the acoustic panels work?Yes, the acoustic panels worked and reduced reverberation in the office. The video above has a before and after audio example, so you can hear how acoustic panels work for yourself. Before installation, the room was too noisy and speech could be hard to focus on. After the installation, sound was controlled and it was easy to talk while other activities carried on.This has made a huge difference to the office and made it far better to work in. Now the office space has been successfully treated, they are installing acoustic baffles in their meeting room. This will make in-person meetings and video calls far easier and more professional.

FORBO’S INTEGRATED FLOORING HELPS TO REFURBISH FLEXIBLE WORKSPACE  Forbo Flooring Systems’ contemporary range of floor coverings were specified by Momentum, a leading furniture expert based in Cardiff, to create a warm and vibrant hybrid working space for Newydd Housing Association. Forbo’s Tessera carpet tiles, Allura Luxury Vinyl Tiles, Coral entrance flooring system and Surestep safety flooring were all used.   Founded in 1974, Newydd Housing Association is a charitable housing association that offers 3,000 affordable homes for rent and sale. With properties based around South and mid Wales, Newydd Housing Association seeks to help those with the greatest need to find a home. Momentum worked with the housing association to refurbish their existing office spaces to create an environment that inspired a new hybrid style of working.  Momentum designed the whole refurbishment and specified all the materials used, as Rhian Worgan, Interior Designer at Momentum, explains: “After securing the tender for the design of Newydd’s offices, we were asked to create a space that supported and inspired the new hybrid way of working that many offices have adopted post-Covid. Newydd really wanted to achieve a flexible and adaptable environment, so that any future changes could be made at minimal cost and with little disruption.   “One of the first things they had asked us to do was to remove any designated areas for teams or individuals. This was to encourage the sharing of information between staff in collaborative spaces. We replaced these areas with zones that supported a variety of tasks, like desk work, formal and informal meetings, brainstorming and more. The idea behind the whole design and layout of the office was that the employees would choose the area that supported the task at hand on any given day.”  However, it wasn’t just the zoning of the office that was important, Newydd desired a workspace that was warm, vibrant and welcoming for its employees. With this in mind, Rhian spent a lot of time finding the right way to subtly incorporate the branding that represented Newydd’s ethos and values, as she explains: “For me it was really important we got the colours we used right. We really wanted to make this a space that employees could explore their creativity and problem solving in and not a traditional, bland workspace. For this reason, it was key to find the right colours and materials to convey this feeling.  “This was part of the reason I specified Forbo’s flooring, there’s such a wide range of products, I knew there would be something that would fit what we were looking for.”  Forbo’s Tessera Chroma and Cloudscape carpet tiles made up the majority of the flooring space across the three-floor office building. Rhian talked about this specification, saying: “I really like Forbo’s Tessera carpet tiles, as they have this beautiful naturally inspired palette that complemented our design plan. We used the Tessera Cloudscape in Grey Dawn extensively across all three floors in the circulation areas and for one of the meeting rooms, due to their thick pile height and sound reduction qualities. It also has this beautiful mixture of greys that create a serene feeling to the floor. We used this product alongside Forbo’s Tessera Chroma in the Chanterelle colourway in the main office space, using the Cloudscape tiles to create geometric shapes embedded into the larger flooring scheme.   “We then used Tessera Chroma in the Pasture, Nautical, Blossom and Mineral colourways. These were installed in the different meeting pods and dedicated call rooms where we matched them to the paint scheme on the walls. It just added this pop of colour, which broke up the greys used in the circulation areas and main office space. Chroma was perfect for these areas, due to the sheer number of colourways available to choose from, as well as it’s underfoot comfort.”  Not only this, but Tessera Chroma has a 26 dB sound reduction, making it perfect for the meeting room pods that are connected side-by-side, stopping noise from distracting those outside or next door.   Furthermore, Forbo’s Allura LVT was specified across the refurbishment and was laid in a Herringbone pattern. Rhian continued: “We specified Forbo’s Allura planks to break-up the carpet tiles we had already used quite heavily across the scheme. We needed something that we could install easily and wouldn’t look out of place in the eating areas. We went for the Light Honey Oak colourway as it is very light and has a lovely grain embossing to it.”  Forbo’s Allura LVT was also used in the Mist Texture colourway for the ground floor entranceway.   With the hybrid nature of Newydd’s office they expected to see a lot of footfall, so it was important that an entrance flooring system was installed to protect the interior floor coverings, by preventing dirt and moisture from being brought inside. Rhian said: “We also had Forbo’s Coral entrance flooring system installed in the front entrance in the Shark Grey colourway, which complemented the Allura LVT installed in the foyer nicely. Having an effective entrance flooring system meant the rest of the office would stay looking better for longer, something which is important for an office where people are being encouraged to move around and work in a hybrid fashion.”   With its R10 slip rating, ensuring staff stay safe whilst using the onsite facilities, Forbo’s Surestep safety flooring was also specified for the ground floor bathroom and showers in the Star colourway.  Rhian concluded: “We’re delighted with the way the office space has come together, as are Newydd themselves! I’ve worked with Forbo on many projects in the past and trust the products to do what we need them to. Their portfolio on offer, alongside the customer service and technical support provided, is something that keeps me coming back to Forbo.”  Started towards the end of 2021 and finished in November of 2022, Newydd Housing Associations’ new offices have been received well by staff.  To find out more about Forbo’s offering for offices, visit: https://www.forbo.com/flooring/en-uk/segments/commercial-offices/poitcq#panel_5.

Reducing Office Noise and Echo: Acoustic Panels Case Study

Soundproofing Store

Easy-Fix Acoustic Foam Panels: The Solution to Office Noise and EchoIn many offices, unwanted noise and echo can pose significant challenges. Excessive office noise can disrupt productivity, increase stress, and make communication difficult. Fortunately, acoustic panels provide an effective and stylish solution to these problems. Why Noise and Echo Are Problematic in OfficesOpen-plan offices, whilst great for collaboration, often amplify sound. Hard surfaces like glass, concrete, and wood reflect sound waves, creating echoes and increasing noise levels. This environment can lead to:Reduced focus and lower productivity.Miscommunication during meetings or phone calls.Increased employee fatigue and stress due to constant noise distractions. What are Acoustic Panels?Acoustic panels are specially designed to absorb sound waves. They effectively reduce noise and prevent echoes. Available in various sizes, shapes, and styles, they seamlessly complement different office aesthetics whist dramatically improving the sound quality within the space.Acoustic panels work by trapping sound waves and converting them into heat energy. This process minimises reverberations, creating a quieter, more comfortable workspace for employees to focus and collaborate effectively.Acoustic panels from The Soundproofing Store feature a specialist sound absorbing foam core and are wrapped in an acoustic fabric. The 40mm thick options provide a Class A sound absorption performance, to dramatically reduce unwanted echo and enhanced the acoustic comfort within any space.Steps to Reduce Office Noise and Echo with Acoustic Panels1. Identify Problematic AreasStart by assessing your office space. Identify the areas where noise levels are highest, such as meeting rooms, open plan communal areas, and reception areas.2. Choose the Right Type of Acoustic PanelsAcoustic panels come in various forms, each suited to different needs:Wall Panels: Ideal for reducing sound reflections off flat surfaces.Ceiling Rafts or Baffles: Ideal for spaces with high ceilings where sound bounces around and when wall space is reserved for screens, artwork, displays or notices.Desk Dividers: A practical solution for open-plan offices, providing personal sound insulation.High-impact Panels: Ideal for high traffic areas or sports halls.3. Customise for Aesthetics and BrandingAcoustic panels can be more than functional - they can also be a design element. Choose colours, patterns, or custom-printed panels that reflect your brand or complement your office decor.Benefits of Acoustic Panels in OfficesImproved Productivity: A quieter environment allows employees to concentrate better, free from disruptive background noise.Enhanced Communication: Meetings and calls are clearer and more productive with reduced distractions.Increased Comfort: A quieter workspace helps to reduces stress and fatigue, creating a more comfortable and pleasant working environment.Professional Appeal: Beyond functionality, acoustic panels add a polished, modern look to your office. Why Acoustic Panels are Essential for Reducing Noise and Echo in an OfficeAcoustic panels are often a necessity for modern offices. They not only solve noise and echo issues but also contribute to a healthier, happier, and more productive workplace.Acoustic panels are designed to absorb sound waves, reducing noise and preventing echoes. By incorporating them into your office, you can create a more comfortable, productive, and professional environment.By investing in acoustic panels, you can transform your office into a space where unwanted echo and noise no longer impacts productivity, concentration, communication and wellbeing.Case Study: Acoustic Easy-Fix Ceiling Panels for Office SoundproofingThe Soundproofing Store was contacted by the Managing Director of a business in the process of moving into a stunning new office on the Broughton Hall Estate in Yorkshire. Although the beautiful setting offered tranquillity, the building itself failed to reflect this peaceful atmosphere. The office, a spacious converted watermill, captured the company’s interest with its rustic charm. However, it posed significant challenges for managing office acoustics. The large open-plan design, coupled with hard reflective surfaces amplified noise throughout the space. With 50-60 staff members, many of whom spend a considerable amount of time on the phone, the existing acoustics in the space hindered productivity and were not conducive to a productive work environment. The Solution: ProSound Easy-Fix Acoustic Ceiling PanelsThe Soundproofing Store offers a variety of acoustic wall and ceiling treatment solutions, so why were Easy-Fix Acoustic Panels selected?By analysing the office dimensions and reviewing photos of the space, The Soundproofing Store’s team of acoustic experts identified the available surface area within the office. Using this information, they created an acoustic report of the office. The report calculates the echo levels in the space and determines the amount of sound absorption needed to reduce the echo to a distraction-free level. (Please contact The Soundproofing Store should you require an acoustic report).Easy-Fix Acoustic Foam Panels are selected because they attach easily and directly to both walls and ceilings. Given the office’s stunning design and limited wall space, the beams offered an ideal location for installing the panels. This approach not only preserved the aesthetic appeal but also optimised the available space. In a large open-plan office, treating the ceiling ensures a more even distribution of sound absorption, making this solution both practical and effective. The client chose the Easy-Fix Panels in white, prioritising a seamless blend with the room's design over a bolder statement in their brand colours. In white, the panels introduced a modern touch that perfectly complemented the rustic charm of the converted mill.Features of Easy-Fix Acoustic PanelsTo address unwanted office noise, it is important to cover the surface area with soft, absorbent material. This is achieved by using sound absorption panels, also referred to as acoustic treatment panels.ProSound Acoustic Easy-fix Ceiling Panels are a popular solution for reducing echo and reverberation and improving sound quality in commercial spaces. The panels are designed to be extremely easy to install and highly effective in reducing noise levels, making them an ideal choice for the business's needs. The Acoustic Easy-fix Ceiling Panels are made from a high-performance acoustic foam core, which helps absorb sound waves and prevent echo, thus reducing overall noise levels in the office. They can be added to ceilings or walls and when sound is projected out, instead of hitting a hard wall or hard ceiling and bouncing back, it hits the acoustic panel and the panel soaks the sound up and absorbs it. This stops it from bouncing back into the room. The more surface area of the office covered in acoustic panels, the less echo there is.The Easy-Fix Foam Panels are covered with an acoustically transparent fabric which means the sound goes straight through the fabric and into the sound absorbing core. With a range of fabrics and colour options to suit any type of office space. Because all office spaces are different, Easy-Fix Acoustic Panels are bespoke and available in a variety of different shapes and sizes to suit any space.Optimising Acoustics Within An OfficeThe Soundproofing Store ran an acoustic report which calculated the reverberation time of the office. This was 4 seconds, which meant with just a couple of people talking in the room, there was a lot of echo. Add in all of the employees and it would be extremely loud. The aim was to get the reverberation time down to 1 second, so not completely 'dry' which would sound odd for an office environment. (Think about the dry feel of the acoustics when you are at the cinema). Reducing the reverberation time from 4 seconds to 1 second makes a huge huge difference to the office acoustics. To achieve this result 42 Easy-Fix Acoustic Panels are used, covering 60m². This size of the panels were bespoke to fit between the wooden beams at 800mm x 1800mm and 40mm thick. Importantly, ProSound Easy-Fix Acoustic Panels deliver a Class A -NRC 0.95 performance.Easy-Fix Panels InstallationProSound Easy-Fix Panels are extremely easy to install. Instead of being installed with brackets or suspension cables they have a simple self adhesive peel and stick application. Due to the acoustic panels being installed on the office ceiling and not the wall, a grab adhesive is also used.Step-by-Step Installation of ProSound Easy-Fix Acoustic Ceiling PanelsPlease see the video.Office Sound Absorption with Easy-Fix Acoustic Foam Ceiling Panels: The ResultsAcoustic panels can serve as either a subtle addition or a bold statement in an office. With endless design possibilities, the choice is entirely up to personal style preference.Following the installation of the Acoustic Easy-Fix Foam Ceiling Panels, the office environment drastically improved. Staff reported a significant reduction in overall noise levels, with less disturbance from background chatter and phone conversations. The panels helped absorb sound, preventing it from bouncing off the hard surfaces of the office and reducing the ‘echo’ effect that had previously made the space feel noisy and unproductive. In addition to their acoustic performance, the panels seamlessly blended into the office’s aesthetics, enhancing the building’s modern, yet rustic charm without detracting from the natural beauty of the space. The MD and staff were thrilled with the results, saying how "the office soundproofing is amazing." and that he wouldn't hesitate to "highly recommend, Phil and the team at The Soundproofing Store."The business can now operate to its full potential in beautifu

VIEGA LTD

VIEGA MEGAPRESS – THE IDEAL FIT FOR FESTOOL HQAward-winning international power tools manufacturer, Festool has invested £10 million into its new headquarters based in Bury St. Edmonds. As part of the construction, Viega’s Megapress press connection technology has been utilised for the building’s new state-of-the-art heating system, allowing for an efficient and effective installation.Festool has relocated its 55 office-based employees to the new site in Suffolk Business Park, in Bury St. Edmonds. The large, modern facility includes meeting rooms, cafés and office space with a separate warehouse and demonstration facility. It was important for the company that its new headquarters represented a modern and sustainable design and could be a facility where the company can continue to expand and develop. The headquarters has a complex range of HVAC systems, including a hybrid air conditioning system, underfloor heating and domestic services. Viega’s carbon steel press fitting system, Megapress was an ideal solution to create the pipework connections, offering a fast and effective alternative to traditional methods such as welding.David Aldous, Mechanical Project Manager at Ceetech, the contractor for the project, commented: “We selected Megapress as it ticked all the boxes. It provided a secure press connection without the need for welding and allowed our team to undertake the work efficiently and effectively. This project had to be completed to a tight deadline, so it was essential to make strategic time gains throughout the installation period.“We were also able to make valuable time-savings because with the Megapress system, there is no need to prepare the pipe surface or clean it after as with welding, threading or grooving. From a health and safety perspective – it also removes the element of hot works.”A highly effective pressing method, Megapress connections can be made in just seven seconds – helping to achieve a 60% reduction in installation time. After cutting the pipe to the required length, contractors need only deburr the cut surface, slide the press fitting into place and press the connection. The simplicity of the press fitting process also ensures that a uniform seal is created on each connection throughout the project; particularly important on large-scale developments where there is set to be thousands of joints across a single site. Once the fitting has been pressed, it forms a strong and secure connection.David concluded: “The Megapress system is excellent, I’ll certainly select Viega again for future projects. It was a clean installation and the end-client was pleased with the high quality of work."

Improving acoustics and aesthetics within Glasgow offices

Improving acoustics and aesthetics within Glasgow offices

Hush Acoustics

When Galaxy Insulation – Hush Acoustics’ parent company – moved into its new regional offices near Glasgow, the team wanted to ensure the spaces were pleasant to work in and acoustically comfortable. The offices at Blantyre to the south of the city are contained within a modern building in a business park. This is typically designed and optimised for versatility, energy efficiency and low maintenance with large windows to allow for plenty of natural light transmission. As is common with office buildings of this type, given the relatively low levels of soft materials and furnishings used in the fit-out and décor, once the team moved into their offices it quickly became apparent that the environment was echoey and acoustically uncomfortable as a result of reverberation.RESOLVING ACOUSTIC ISSUESBeing familiar with this issue, the team at Galaxy Insulation were keen to ensure that everyone in the new office could work without being disrupted by excessive background noise, which is often caused by soundwaves reflecting off hard surfaces like glass and wood.Galaxy Insulation turned to the team at Hush Acoustics for assistance with this issue, having seen how it had worked with clients across the UK to address similar reverberation problems. Hush started the process by conducting an acoustic survey to determine the extent of the problem and identify where sound absorber panels could be fitted to resolve the issue.Hush proposed fitting six Hush Absorber 50 panels in varying sizes, including 1800x1200mm, 1200×1200 and 1000x1000mm, which would be strategically mounted on the walls of the offices. This is a Class A absorber that comprises a specially formulated 50mm thick acoustic foam, hand-finished with an interior fabric, which is applied to the face, edges and back return.ADDING A CREATIVE DIMENSIONAs Hush Absorber panels are always manufactured to order in a fabric cover coloured to the requirements of the client, this presented an opportunity for Galaxy to use the new panels for decorative purposes too.Rather than apply a single colour or generic pattern, the local team leading the project wanted to celebrate their great city by printing large photographs of famous Glasgow landmarks onto the panels. A number of high-resolution photographs were sourced and supplied to Hush to arrange the fabric printing as part of the manufacturing process.Hush manufactured and supplied the absorber panels within three weeks from the date of order, and installed them all in a matter of hours to minimise disruption at the Galaxy Insulation offices. Feedback from the team gave the panels an immediate thumbs up, with the difference in acoustic comfort noticed instantly and the images giving the office a distinctive new look.CLIENT FEEDBACKJim Downie, Scotland’s Managing Director of Galaxy Insulation said: “What a transformation the absorber panels have made! Firstly, they look amazing with the vibrant colours of the photographs reproducing extremely well, reflecting our intention to celebrate Glasgow’s iconic buildings and skyline.“Acoustically, the offices are far more comfortable for everyone. We’re an extremely busy office here as we work with customers across Scotland, so we’re always speaking on the phone or talking to each other to deliver for clients. We wanted to ensure high levels of background noise did not result in reverberation and make the working environment potentially unbearable.“The team at Hush Acoustics were quick to understand our requirements which gave us complete confidence that their proposed solution would meet our needs. Now the panels are installed, it is clear that the Hush Absorber 50 panels have worked exactly as planned, working in the background to minimise the risk of nuisance reverberation.”
