Application

Vertical active fire and smoke curtain barrier suitable for a wide range of internal fire compartmentation and smoke control applications, including protected means of escape, atria, lobbies, receptions, corridor separation, openings in fire-resisting walls, boundary protection, escalators, stairwells, lift shafts and lift lobbies.

Commonly specified within hospitals, healthcare facilities, schools, universities, hotels, high-rise buildings, mixed-use developments, commercial offices, retail environments, stadia, museums and galleries, as well as transport infrastructure, industrial and utility installations. Also suitable for use within defence, custodial, policing and secure environments where reliable fire and smoke containment is critical.

The system supports flexible architectural layouts while maintaining building fire strategy objectives, tenability requirements and regulatory compliance.

Description

The Flameshield EW120 S Vertical Active Fire and Smoke Curtain Barrier is an electrically operated, gravity fail-safe fire and smoke control system designed to form a virtually continuous fire-separating barrier within a building. The system delivers 120 minutes fire integrity and 120 minutes radiation performance, maintaining radiation levels below 15 kW/m² and achieving 10.7 kW/m² at 120 minutes, supporting occupant tenability and protected means of escape.

The barrier assembly comprises a carbon steel barrel and integrated 24 V d.c. motor, incorporating a high-performance flexible fire curtain fabric capable of withstanding temperatures in excess of 1000°C. The barrel deflection complies with BS 6323-5, ensuring structural stability across large openings, with standard curtain sizes available up to 8000 mm x 8000 mm. A two-section bottom rail provides consistent tension and controlled descent, ensuring reliable gravity fail-safe operation in the event of power or system failure.

Designed for seamless integration into architectural environments, the Flameshield curtain can be concealed above ceiling lines and is available with colour-finished end plates, guides and hoods, enabling coordination with interior design requirements without compromising fire performance.

The system incorporates a two-stage closing operation, delayed descent options and fully tested ancillary equipment including egress switches, access switches, obstruction detection, and heat and smoke activation devices, all tested to Annex H of BS 8524-1. Optional audible and visual warning systems, including voice warning devices, enhance safety during deployment.

Fire, radiation and smoke containment performance has been independently tested and approved by Warrington Fire Research Centre and Exova, in accordance with BS 8524-1, BS EN 1634-1 (fire and radiation) and BS EN 1634-3 (smoke containment).

Barrier units

Single.

Deployment

Full.

Guidance for specification option:

As standard.

Multipositional.

Guidance for specification option:

Optional: Partial drop.

The barrier shall have the facility to deploy to a pre-determined position to allow escape and initial smoke containment. The partial close position shall be site adjustable with an adjustable wait time in the partial close position of up to 10 minutes.

Accessories

Emergency retract.

Guidance for specification option:

The barrier can have an emergency retract interface for escape and emergency access. The interface shall be volt free, normally open (close on operation). The signal required shall be momentary with a site adjustable retract time. The emergency retract facility shall be operational as long as there is a primary/secondary source or via an external source.

Audio/ visual/ spoken warning unit.

Guidance for specification option:

The barrier has a volt free c/o contact which indicates an active c/o (change over) contact indicating an active alarm signal. An Audio/Visual warning can be interfaced with this using power supplied by secondary source or via an external source.

BMS interface.

Guidance for specification option:

The barrier has volt free c/o contacts to indicate whether the barrier is fully open or fully closed.

Obstruction warning devices.

Guidance for specification option:

Where sensory equipment for detecting obstructions to barrier assembly deployment is provided, e.g. a single or multi-beam detection system, when the barrier assembly is tested in accordance with Annex H, it shall provide a warning in accordance with 5.8.5.2.

  • A multi-beam detection system is required when the barrier assembly is intended to protect a means of escape route. For more information, see BS 8524 - 2.5.8.5.2.

Fabric

4415-2-B1 fabric.

Guidance for specification option:

  • Stainless steel wire, reinforced glass fabric with a specially formulated intumescent fire retardant silicone elastomer.
  • Does not generate toxic emissions, and has a good resistance to hydrolysis.
  • At 140°C the coating system will form an expanding intumescent char.
  • The fabric has been independently tested for fire propagation in accordance with BS 476-6 in addition to this it also conforms to BS 476-7 which relates to surface spread of flame and in accordance with approved document B 2006.
  • As a requirement of BS EN 1634-1, the fabric and curtain are tested as a complete assembly in compliance with BS EN 1363-1 and BS EN 1363-2.
