Plot 6, Perry Barr Residential Scheme, Birmingham

As part of the broader regeneration plan in the northwest of Birmingham, Plot 6 at the Perry Barr Residential Scheme, is one of the largest developments.Providing 268 residential apartments, the eight-storey, mixed-use building also has a large courtyard garden, rooftop gardens and parking facilities for its residents. The living space has been created by blending modern architecture with traditional values.To achieve their vision, Glancy Nicholls Architects specified a range of Kawneer’s market-leading, architectural aluminium glazing systems for the residential scheme.The AA®100 Curtain Wall System, AA®720 Casement Windows and AA®720 Balcony Doors were used throughout the project and were chosen for their design flexibility and thermal performance. Unity Place was designed as the anchor project in the Swindon Kimmerfields development. Aiming to achieve a rating of BREEAM “Excellent”, minimise waste during construction, and run efficiently throughout its lifespan, the building is a sustainable commitment to Swindon that provided the 950 staff of Zurich Insurance with 100,000ft2 of office space.Kawneer’s AA®190 TB Severe Duty Entrance Doors were selected for use on the ground floor to meet the needs of the heavy footfall of Unity Place – the solution is an all-purpose door for use in high-traffic areas and automatic entrances.Kawneer’s AA®110 Curtain Wall System on the façade, was chosen for its high thermal and weather performance, perfect for a project that required efficiency and sustainability at every phase.

Designed by AHR, built by Vinci Construction and installed by our approved specialist subcontractor APiC UK Ltd, Kawneer supplied its fully integrated tried and tested AA®100 and AA®110 Curtain Wall Systems, AA®190 TB Doors and AA®720 Windows to aid the redevelopment of the project. Kawneer’s energy-efficient, and aesthetically pleasing products ensured that the performance of Northgate matches its striking appearance. A use of terracotta on the project subtly references at Chester’s Roman past.
Wilfred Brown Building, Brunel University, Uxbridge

Kawneer’s AA®100 curtain wall, AA®540 vents, and series 190 and AA®720 doors were specified by the regular Kawneer users for the latest redevelopment of the Wilfred Brown Building at the university in Greater London. The mullion-drained capped and SSG (Structurally Silicone Glazed) curtain wall forms a new sawtooth façade to the first and second floors and is complemented by the AA®540 window vents which are top-hung and also Structurally Silicone Glazed, series 190 heavy-duty doors to the main entrance, and the thermally-superior AA®720 doors.

With a project value of approximately £16m, this project required a highly sensitive design solution to address a complicated urban context involving 28 neighbouring residential and commercial properties. The transformation visioned by PKS Architects, and developed by main contractor Knight Harwood, involved converting some of the buildings into high-quality apartments and high-specification offices using Kawneer’s solutions. The task was immense and involved six neighbouring commercial properties. The goal was achieved using multiple high-performance Kawneer products.
Unit 216, Cambridge Science Park

Kawneer’s aluminium AA®100 zone-drained curtain wall and thermally superior AA®720 entrance doors feature on all elevations of Unit 216 at the UK’s leading science park, while AA®190 TB severe-duty doors have been used on the main entrance. The unit was taken back to a concrete shell and rebuilt with a brick and glazed façade by main contractor Hutton Construction and is now the new home for Amgen, one of the world’s largest independent biotechnology companies.

Kawneer played its part in the impressive Hale Wharf regeneration project by supplying our AA®100 Curtain Wall System, known for its excellent thermal performance and flexibility of design choice. The system features on both the ground floor retail and communal entrances of the 21-Storey (Block A) and 15-Storey (Block B) Buildings. It also features our AA®190 TB Doors on Block B that excel in high-traffic environments due to its robust and welded construction. The one and two-bedroom apartments are also fitted with Kawneer’s AA®720 Casement and AA®720 Tilturn Windows and AA®3572 Lift/Slide Doors, giving residents access to their balconies and the far-reaching city views which help set this exceptional development apart.
Circle Square, Manchester

Installed by Kawneer’s approved specialist subcontractor FK Group, the £25.3 million project, designed by FCB Studios, was the first to use Kawneer’s newly enhanced AA®110 Curtain Wall system that features a bespoke expansion joint, which allows a building movement tolerance of +/- 15 mm. Creating a sense of scale and vibrancy, the white profiled terracotta ceramic façades contrast the earthy tones of the perimeter buildings in a modern interpretation of the grand Victorian warehouses nearby. The high-performance Curtain Wall was accompanied by AA®720 Side Hung Open-In Windows to deliver a high level of thermal performance throughout. Using passive principles, the high insulation building fabric coupled with solar control glazing, address the energy requirements for heating and cooling.
Quayside House, Gloucester

To provide optimum weather and thermal performance and to maximise the building’s energy efficiency, ADP Architecture specified a range of aluminium products from Kawneer, installed by approved specialist subcontractor Norman & Underwood. The building’s façade features Kawneer’s AA®100 curtain wall system while AA®190 TB severe-duty doors were specified to handle the high volume of people entering and leaving the building. These were complemented by Kawneer’s AA®720 casement windows with louvreshields which provide both ventilation and fall protection. As the construction is a gateway to the city’s commercial area, the aesthetics were also paramount.

Architectural glazing systems by Kawneer were specifically selected for a £18.5 million extension to the UK’s oldest business school for their ability to meet the building’s design aesthetic and high-performance requirements. The new 3,000m2 extension features Kawneer’s AA®110 and AA®100 mullion-drained curtain wall systems with capped and capless mullions as well as AA®100 zone-drained fully-capped curtain wall. The AA®100 system, with 50mm sightlines, was used in all areas with the exception of two full-height curtain wall screens which featured on the building’s ‘social space’ characteristic that utilised the AA®110 system with 65mm sightlines.
One Crown Place, London

Located at the intersection of the London Borough of Hackney and the City of London, One Crown Place is a diverse mixed-use development with a unique blend of old and new elements to form an entire urban block.It comprises two impressive new towers, office and retail spaces, a clubhouse, restaurant, streetside shops and cafes, and a boutique hotel that retains the shell of some Georgian townhouses designed by George Dance the Younger. The wider project encompasses the retrofitting of the 54 Wilson Street office block, originally built in the 1970’s. The eye-catching and intricate ground floor facade at One Crown Place is a superb scene-setter for its many upper levels, creating an inviting interface at street level.It is a symphony of elegant solutions working together in perfect harmony to create that vital first impression as building occupants and the public approach the development.Kawneer engaged with the design and build teams to create a statement multi-element ground floor facade. The backbone of each element is the AA®110 curtain wall, working in tandem with a steel support system to efficiently transfer loads, with the following key features:• 6-metre vertical spans supporting 750kg double-glazed panels• Terracotta rainscreen infills• Cantilevered glass canopies• Integrated and hidden gutter system• Feature band• Continuous louvresPrecise geometry and uniformity in the mullions allowed the façade to seamlessly interface with the existing townhouses, helping to bridge the gap between Georgian heritage and modern construction.
South Central Institute of Technology, Bletchley

Milton Keynes College Group made the decision to create a purpose-built digital learning centre from existing buildings on its Bletchley Campus.With ambitious targets for the inclusivity and diversity of student intake, the South Central Institute of Technology (SCIoT) was designed to provide high-quality learning environments, providing the latest hi-tech digital equipment and state of the art AI, VR and AR technologies.Designed by GSS Architecture and built by Ashe Construction, the ambitious remodelling and refurbishment project at SCIoT uses a range of Kawneer architectural glazing solutions, installed by specialist subcontractor JPJ Installations Ltd.Kawneer’s AA®100 Curtain Wall System replaced the existing first and second floor screens, while new build elements of the project featured the AA®720 SL Slimline Casement Window that offers slim sightlines to maximise light and maximum vision areas and AA®720 Standard Casement Window offering design flexibility.Two types of Kawneer door solutions were selected. The AA®190 TB Welded Door System was installed on the ground floor, suitable for the high traffic areas of the North and East entrance areas, while the West elevation features the AA®720 Series Door System, a medium-to-heavy entrance door offering versatile door heights and thermal performance.SCIoT is now able to provide an improved technical and digital education offer within a clean modern environment for students and businesses who require additional staff training to meet their needs.
Swiss Cottage Library, London

Built in 1964 and designed by Sir Basil Spence, Swiss Cottage Library is widely recognised as a masterpiece of civic London architecture.Grade II listed, the 52,506 square feet building remains a key local epicentre of community life. One of the largest energy consumers in the London Borough of Camden it was in need of a major fabric, mechanical and electrical refurbishment. The aim was to improve the internal conditioning and prevent high levels of heat loss.Architects Atkins chose Kawneer’s AA®720 SL Slimline Casement Window, installed by Kawneer specialist subcontractor EuroWindows Ltd, in addition to AA®720 Fixed Lights and Horizontal Pivots, AA®3610 Vertical Sliding Windows and AA®190 TB Doors.The AA®720 SL Slimline Casement Window with its ultra slim sightlines was specified by Atkins as it was the ideal choice for use on the Grade II listed building. The BRE Green Guide ‘A’ Rated narrow frame also maximises the glazing vision whilst delivering optimum weather and thermal performance with a superior and modern look.
Stafford College Skills and Innovation Centre, Stafford

Located in the heart of Stafford Town Centre, Newcastle and Stafford Colleges Group’s Stafford College Skills & Innovation Centre is a cutting-edge learning facility and one of the first projects delivered in accordance with the Department For Education’s Further Education Output Specification.The Centre’s two impressive curved frontages feature the mullion-drained Kawneer AA®110 65mm Curtain Wall System, creating a transparent and inviting facade that mirrors the building’s aspirational and inspirational nature. A bespoke faceted double-nose AA®110 mullion carries a 33mm thickness 9.5m tall triple-laminated glass fin detail for solar shading.The zone-drained Kawneer AA®100 50mm Curtain Wall System has been used on a number of elevations and Kawneer AA®720 Standard Casement Windows in a top hung configuration act as curtain wall vents throughout the building.Door choice was Kawneer’s AA®190 TB all-purpose door for use in high traffic areas and automatic entrances in sliding and open in/out single and double swing variants.
Nottingham Trent University Design & Digital Arts Building, Nottingham

Located in Nottingham City Centre, Nottingham Trent University’s Design & Digital Arts Building creates a landmark campus presence and an outstanding addition to the city’s skyline.Kawneer curtain wall, door and window solutions augment the striking presence of the Design & Digital Arts Building and assist in the achievement of carbon credentials that match Nottingham Trent University’s zero-carbon commitment.The Kawneer AA®110 Curtain Wall System features on various elevations of the building, some with 300mm deep feature mullion fins. Entrance doors on the project comprise Kawneer’s AA®190 TB high-traffic all-purpose door, used on two curtain wall elevations and, along with our AA®720 Series Doors, each featuring on one of the two remaining curtain wall screens. Kawneer’s AA®720 Standard Casement Window is used on two elevations. Sleek and elegant K-Vesta handles were used, facilitating a precise colour match.
Fylde View, Blackpool

Fylde View, the new seven-storey Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) Office Block is the third phase of Blackpool’s Talbot Gateway Development, creating a central business district providing educational and traditional work placements and community engagement as part of the town’s regeneration programme.Kawneer’s AA®110 Curtain Wall Zone-Drained System was chosen – a 65mm wide system and with a fully developed and tested enhanced movement/expansion joint. Using its Increased Weight Capacity Console, Kawneer undertook a stringent process of interrogating the structural model to refine the deflections that resulted in the conclusion that bespoke brackets had to be incorporated into the assembly, allowing the curtain wall to be ‘jacked’ during installation. As the facetted, curved-effect curtain wall was loaded, the structure and curtain wall would theoretically deflect, so the brackets would allow the glazing system to be lined and levelled.A terracotta precast concrete off-site solution, including Kawneer AA®720 Hi Reflex Plus windows, simplified and sped up window installation, greatly reducing site assembly requirements.Kawneer’s AA®190 TB all-purpose door with Kawneer 451PT framing was selected for front and rear entrance doors.
Anna Freud Centre, London

Parallel opening window vents by Kawneer were specified for a mental health project that is arguably without parallel. Some 88 AA®100 SSG parallel opening vents were used as concealed windows, to maintain the same aesthetic as the façade, within AA®100 mullion-drained curtain walling and AA®720 doors on the new £40 million London headquarters of the world-famous Anna Freud National Centre for Children and Families.The Kawneer systems at the Anna Freud Centre were specified by architects Penoyre & Prasad as they were a “cost-effective” solution to their needs and enabled them to use the same systems for all areas of curtain walling and rooflights. The project has enabled the relocation of the mental healthcare charity to bring together its global expertise in practice, research and policy under one roof from its residential properties in Hampstead to a purpose-built facility near King’s Cross. This comprises a six-storey new-build and the refurbishment of a century-old former chocolate factory and warehouse.
Victor Phillip Dahdaleh Heart and Lung Research Institute (HLRI), Cambridge

A joint venture between the University of Cambridge and Royal Papworth Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, the Victor Phillip Dahdaleh Heart and Lung Research Institute (HLRI) is a major new £45million facility accommodating Europe’s largest concentration of heart and lung medicine scientists and clinicians. It draws together the NHS and academia to create a world-leading research environment and is a unique facility of its kind in the UK.Creating the largest Biotech cluster outside of the United States meant that the specification, already approved on previous projects, had to be met. Kawneer systems were selected for this important building by the University of Cambridge.Installed by approved specialist subcontractor JPJ Installations Ltd, Kawneer’s AA®100 Zone Drained and AA®100 Structurally Silicone Glazed (SSG) Curtain Wall systems, and AA®720 Windows, feature on the main elevations, with the AA®720 Series Door Systems chosen for the main entrance area. In high access areas, the AA®190 TB Welded Door is used and on the ground floor. AA®100 Rooflights were also installed on the third floor.
Cardiff Bus Interchange, Cardiff

Cardiff Bus Interchange features a range of Kawneer architectural aluminium glazing solutions, installed by approved specialist subcontractor Dudley’s Aluminium Ltd.The AA®110 65mm Curtain Wall System includes the Large Movement Joint on this project. The joint is capable of accommodating up to +/- 15mm of differential vertical movement between the facade and the supporting structure. This is achieved through the design of an expansion joint for connecting vertical mullions.Located at each slab level and therefore concealed by spandrel or glass panels, the joint uses specialised engineering foam seals which expand and contract with the movement of the structure. In conjunction with this, a unique transom profile at each floor level provides allowance for the increased movement of the spandrel infill, whilst maintaining air and weathertightness of the facade. A breather membrane is also incorporated into the design to direct any ingress into the glazing rebates to the internal drainage channels.The project features AA®720 Open-In Windows with K-LouvreShield – a simple and aesthetic solution for providing both ventilation and fall protection.AA®190 TB Doors were also installed by Cardiff-based Dudley’s. The AA®190 TB is an all-purpose door for use in high traffic areas and automatic entrances. Its robust construction means that it is suitable for use in heavy/severe applications. It is the only door with welded construction, supported by a Kawneer Lifetime Guarantee, offering peace of mind.
Associated British Foods Regional HQ, Peterborough

Architectural glazing systems by Kawneer were specified as a “key aspect” of the new regional head office of British Sugar’s parent company, the FTSE 25 Associated British Foods (ABF), for their pedigree and quality.CPMG Architects selected products from all of Kawneer’s portfolio for the building on a 4.5-acre site at Cygnet Business Park, Hampton, Peterborough, which would enable the relocation of almost 400 people from ABF businesses locally (AB Sugar, British Sugar, AB Mauri, ABF Ingredients and ABF) with the addition of purpose-built conference and training facilities and a showcase central reception area. Kawneer’s aluminium AA®100 SSG (Structurally Silicone Glazed) curtain walling features on the ground floor reception, meeting/conference spaces and south-facing restaurant/café while AA®100 mullion-drained curtain walling has been used on the first and second floor open-plan offices of the three-storey building.In addition, the 5,755m2 (GIA) building features ultra-thermally efficient AA®720 doors, large (3m high by 9m wide) AA®3572 sliding doors and over-sized (2.4m by 0.7m) AA®720 parallel opening windows, all installed by approved specialist sub-contractor Norman & Underwood.
Lowther Road Integrated Community Mental Health Centre, Islington, London

A new £17M state-of-the-art four-storey outpatient facility has replaced the previous small mental health centre in Lowther Road, Islington London by Camden and Islington NHS Foundation Trust.Designed by Ryder Architecture, the new Centre offers a range of mental and physical health services and is part of the North London Mental Health Partnership’s St. Pancras Transformation programme, an NHS project aimed at moving services out of St Pancras hospital to modern community-based facilities.Sustainability is at the heart of the design of the building’s external envelope, with solar panels fitted to the roof and bolt-on solar shading to control heat gain and reduce demand on mechanical ventilation systems.The solar shading was attached to Kawneer’s AA®100 Curtain Wall System featuring special extended feature caps on all elevations around the building, installed by specialist subcontractor Leay Ltd.Working to a specification provided by main contractor Kier Construction, Leay also installed Kawneer’s AA®720 HI Reflex Windows for their excellent thermal performance, in line with the sustainability goals of the project.The larger Centre is now offering enhanced levels of care for local residents with mental health challenges, providing a sustainable, modern and welcoming space at the heart of the community.
