Bottle Lane Self-Build Project

H+H UK Ltd

Bottle Lane is a private custom build home designed and constructed by Revolution Homes. The four-bedroom, detached house stands on the site of the client’s old property which was demolished to make way for a new more acoustically and thermally efficient build. As the client was overseas for the duration of the build, they wanted a company that could offer a full system build package from conceptual design to a finished product. Specialists in the custom-build market, Revolution Homes was able to supply this by employing the H+H Rå Build method of thin-joint aircrete construction.

The 36 homes on the Cawrey Homes’ Fielding Meadow development are built to level 4 of the Code for Sustainable Homes, using a ‘fabric first’ approach, with H+H aircrete blockwork, coupled with different renewable technologies. Air Source Heat Pumps deliver hot water and heating to underfloor pipework on the ground floors and radiators on first floors. Fabric heat losses are reduced by highly insulated ground floors, 200mm wide filled wall cavities and ‘green’ (sedum) roofs. Roof fins provide passive ventilation to reduce overheating in summer, solar PV panels generate electricity and energy efficient appliances are included in every home.

Celcon Blocks were specified on a 24-unit social housing development in Plymouth. H+H was chosen due to the lightweight properties and ease of use as half of the units were constructed by veterans, many of whom had never worked on a construction site. The site was particularly challenging, with change in levels of 2.5 metres. The physical constraints of the site meant that standard articulated delivery vehicles could not be used. This was overcome by H+H visiting site, working closely with them and delivering via Draw Bar vehicle with a crane. U-Value 0.14W/m2K .

A self-build, six-bedroom, detached property, in Powys. Using aircrete, a certified MMC, main contractor B.W Bellis was able to complete the block-work within six weeks. Apart from some technical assistance from H+H on working with aircrete, all of the block work was laid by a single worker during this time. The main contractor had used H+H Celcon Blocks when building his own home and was impressed with the thermal performance so recommended the use of aircrete to the client. Products used: Celcon 140mm Jumbo Bloks on the inner leaf cavity walls of the property.
