Grimsby Hospital

Grimsby Hospital

Centaur Technologies Limited

The roof area at Grimsby Hospital had an existing asphalt waterproofing membrane that had chippings to the surface. The existing waterproofing membrane has come to the end of its serviceable life resulting in water ingress through the roof structure into the building.History Of The ProjectGrimsby Hospital originates from a workhouse infirmary that opened in 1984, the facility then joined the national health service and Grimsby district general hospital in 1948. In the 1970s it was decided to build a modern facility on site. The hospital was officially opened by Diana, Princess of Wales in 1983 and was renamed in her honour. The ChallengeThe roof area was heavily populated with fixed machinery and upstands, this required a system capable of handling complex detailing in order to provide a seamless, watertight seal, It was important that the new roofing system was low odour and could be cold applied quickly and quietly to avoid the risk or disruption to staff, patients and visitors who would continue to use the buildings. The SolutionThe chippings are to be removed from the roof to expose the asphalt membrane. The existing asphalt membrane was to be made good to ensure it was suitable to be used as a vapour control layer onto which the Centech PIR Insulation can be installed. There had been previous repairs to the roof, these were checked and when needed, repairs took place to ensure the surface was in a suitable condition to accept the new Centech PU Waterproofing system. The perimeter kerb details on the roof could be susceptible to water ingress, a Centech GRP trim was fitted on the edge to avoid this.Performance BenefitsThe liquid applied Centech PU System was installed by a Centaur Quality Partnership contractor. Eliminating the need for hot works, the Centech System dramatically reduced fire risks and, because it is low odour, did not expose the occupants to any pungent smells. A Centech 20 year single point guarantee for materials and labour was issued on completion of the project.

Gunwharf Quays

Gunwharf Quays

Centaur Technologies Limited

Gunwharf Quays in Portsmouth is a 33-acre waterfront development, which opened in 2001. It is one of the UK’s best performing retail outlets, attracting more than six million visitors a year. Plans for a £45 million revamp were announced in 2023 and work to upgrade this shopping and leisure haven is ongoing. Earlier this year, the owners installed over 1200 solar panels, which generate more than 500,000 kWh annually and reduce carbon emissions by 115 tonnes - the equivalent of planting 5,400 trees.A series of single ply roofs and an asphalt roof were destined for an overhaul as part of the renovation. With shoppers and retail workers occupying the buildings throughout the works, the roof refurbishment needed to be carried out safely and without disturbance to people. The challengeThree single ply roofs and an asphalt roof were showing signs of wear and tear and needed to be revived with an effective waterproofing solution. The mall is a popular destination for many visitors and therefore the buildings had to remain fully operational while the works took place. With visitors and staff occupying over 90 stores and 30 restaurants, bars and cafes, it was crucial to use a cold-applied, low-odour waterproofing solution to eradicate any risks associated with hot works or harmful materials. The solutionThe asphalt roof was stripped of chippings and prepared and primed before being treated with the Centaur Standard 25 system, which incorporated a Centech SA Carrier/VCL carrier membrane and a waterproofing membrane. Two coats of the Centaur waterproofing system, which is fully reinforced with Centech GFM for durability, were then roller applied to provide a durable and watertight finish. Core samples were taken on the three single ply roofs and the build-up was found to be dry, indicating that overcoating them was viable. The existing substrates were then prepared and primed ready for the Centaur Standard 25 system, which is designed to provide long-term, seamless waterproofing. The Centaur system lent itself well to the complex detailing on the roofs, which included various plant and equipment. Free-standing equipment was temporarily relocated to allow the seamless application of the Centaur Standard system.Non-flammable, ultra low odour and free of any harmful materials, Centech PU is one of the safest liquid roofing solutions on the market. It is cold-applied and cures quickly, making it easy to work with. Performance benefitsThe Centaur system does not require hot works on the roof, which are a fire risk. The single pack solution is quick and simple to apply and is fast-curing – even in seaside locations, such as this one.The low odour and safe formulation ensured that no one was exposed to any unpleasant odours or the risk of sensitisation by inhalation during application.Made with responsibly-sourced raw materials and designed to be zero-waste and straightforward to overcoat, the Centaur system also helps to support the development’s sustainability targets.A comprehensive Centaur 25-year single point guarantee was provided on completion of the project.

Oshwal Temple

Oshwal Temple

Centaur Technologies Limited

The roof on this project was leaking quite badly into the temple below. The existing roof build-up, including insulation, was removed and discarded. A new full warm roof was installed, including tapered insulation to eliminate any issues with standing water.History Of The ProjectThis temple is a traditional load-bearing sandstone and marble building that was hand carved in India by over 200 masons. The ChallengeThe existing roof system had a liquid-applied membrane with insulation. This had been installed without a vapour control layer and the insulation had become saturated, either due to water penetration or condensation. We proposed to strip the roof system back to the screed substrate and reinstate it with a new Centech PU System to upgrade the thermal performance and restore the waterproofing properties of the roof. The SolutionThe central dome was removed piece by piece, and the dome structure was then rendered with a new warm roof build-up including VCL and insulation which was installed across the entire dome. It was then waterproofed and blinded with quartz sand, before being rendered again and then the stone works were re-installed piece by piece – self-supporting to form the dome structure again.Performance BenefitsThe works were carried out by a Centaur CQP contractor to the highest level, including intricate details to all upstands of the handmade stone structures. They paid extra care and attention to all the details to ensure that the stone structures were properly protected during installation. A Centech 20 year single point guarantee for materials and labour was issued on completion of the project.

A 15-year Centech PU roofing system has been installed at Thomas Buxton Primary School, Whitechapel. The existing roof system had reached the end of its serviceable life. The new roof system was installed both during term time and during the winter half-term.History Of The ProjectThomas Buxton School was built in 1973 and named after a former member of parliament and co-founder of the RSPCE is situated in the heart of Whitechapel, London. This school has 460 pupils and is rated outstanding by Ofsted and has a ‘London Healthy Schools’ award. The ChallengeThomas Buxton School was built in 1973 and named after a former member of parliament and co-founder of the RSPCE is situated in the heart of Whitechapel, London. This school has 460 pupils and is rated outstanding by Ofsted and has a ‘London Healthy Schools’ award. The Existing Roof System was in poor condition and numerous roof lights were not compliant with current safety and thermal performance standards. The SolutionCentral Roofing & Building Services Ltd was appointed to install a new roof and replace roof lights. Along with over 100 new roof lights being installed a Centech PU 15 system was used to overlay the existing roof covering of mineral felt which has reached the end of its life.Performance BenefitsThe works were carried out by a CQP Contractor to the highest level, this involved working under tight constraints of space, noise reduction, working hours, and covid-19 regulations. They paid extra care and attention to ensure all existing roof vents and other upstands are properly coated and encapsulated. As Centech PU is a cold-applied system, it eliminated the risks associated with hot works and the use of torches and hot bitumen. The system is well suited to winter installation and is low-odour, quickly installed, and extremely A 15-year single-point guarantee for materials and labour was provided on completion.
