Built in 1858, this stunning home in the Scottish Borders had a traditional metal-framed conservatory that was in dire need of updating, so TFH Reeve were drafted in to add a contemporary garden room and overhaul the outdated, heavily framed conservatory and make the most of dramatic views over the Scottish Borders.
Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge

The Fitzwilliam Museum is almost as well known as the centuries old city that it sits within. Founded in 1816 and built in several phases from 1837, it houses one of the most revered collections of antiquities and modern art in western Europe. Yet, as with any historic building, there comes a time when it has to move with the times and embrace modern technology to ensure the building can continue to operate effectively and sustainably, and provide suitable spaces for its thousands of visitors and precious items for decades to come. That time had come for the Fitzwilliam: The Grade I listed building recently underwent a significant restoration project, and a major focus of this endeavour was the museum’s iconic glass dome rooflights, a captivating feature that has graced the Cambridge skyline for over two centuries.

Much like a rhubarb and custard sweet, the value of this architectural project belongs to its contrasting flavours. The skeleton of Gravelly Grounds might be that of a rustic farmhouse (albeit a present-day interpretation of one), but the addition of our bespoke glazing – including a glass box extension – gives it a modern, stylish twist, flooding the spaces with natural light and enhancing the visual appearance of the building materials that have been used.

The brief stipulated that the space needed to maintain a comfortable temperature throughout the year, so we specified double glazing with an Argon-filled cavity as well as low-e coating to all the glazed units.Another major part of the brief was to remove as much as framework as possible from the glazed part of the structure. To that end, we used a UV corner at the interface of the east (the front of our glass as you’re looking at the back of the house) and south elevations (the left-hand side as you’re looking at the back of the house). This was one of the first UV corners we ever created and the fact it’s stood the test of time for ten years proves we got it right first time!

This particular tale starts with a tired 80s office block that had seen better days in the era of postmodernism, but its latest chapter unfolds with a vibrant renovation, one that breathes new life into the space to enhance employee creativity and collaboration.

Roman Villa Museum at The Newt in Somerset

The original ruins of the Roman villa at The Newt in Somerset were discovered in 1832 and further, more extensive ruins were also discovered in excavations in the 20th and 21st centuries. The client envisioned guests learning from and studying both the original ruins and an authentic reimagining of the original villa.

In order to make the most of their narrow Georgian townhouse and garden, architects Mike Tonkin and Anna Liu decided to remodel their home and the practice's offices and create a space that could be enjoyed whatever the weather (or as they put it "a good place to be on a bad day"), hence the name.

The Creamery at Castle Cary Station has been transformed, blending 1912 heritage with modern craftsmanship. Visitors can now watch traditional dairy-making in a space that honours its past while offering fresh experiences in the café and restaurant.
The Emily Hobhouse Museum, Cornwall

This museum, located in Liskeard, Cornwall, commemorates the life of humanitarian and prominent anti-Boer-War campaigner Emily Hobhouse. From her birth in 1860 until the age of 34, Emily lived in the old rectory, which has since been restored to what it would have looked and felt like in 1875 when the whole Hobhouse family were in residence. Visitors can step back in time as they move from one room to the next, admiring the period furnishings, bold textures, and artefacts that illustrate a place steeped in historic and personal significance.
The Gym at The Newt in Somerset

Set within the Somerset countryside, The Newt is a hotel with a habit of hiding its luxuries in plain sight. Its gymnasium is a case in point: a building designed to almost vanish into the landscape, drawing attention not to itself, but to the view it frames. If you were to wander along the streets of Soho, you would likely arrive at an alleyway known as Walkers Court, originally dating back to the 18th century. Above the many pedestrians busily going about their business is a world first. We are, of course, talking about the world’s first and only two-storey frameless glass bridge that provides easy access to The Boulevard Theatre - built in 2019.
