Ada Belfield Centre & Belper Library

Bailey Street Furniture Group

BSFG was appointed by Robertson Construction to provide a complete range of street furniture elements including seating, planters, cycle parking, and bollards to the external space of a newly built Care Centre and Library in the historic market town of Belper.BSFG offered extensive assistance throughout the project including attendance at design meetings looking at materiality, cost, and installation demands which changed a number of times throughout the project.Although largely a new build, the existing façades of a former Thornton’s Factory have been retained, refurbished, and carefully incorporated into the scheme maintaining considerations of the UNESCO World Heritage Site status of the area.BSFG’s premium selection of street furniture perpetuates the careful consideration for the site heritage as well as offering an inviting space for the public and residents of the home. As well as providing space for socialising and natural splashes of colour with plants, the concrete seating and planters echo the light stone of the new section of the development. The inclusion of Moka Bollards and Cubes in corten provides elegant seating and pedestrian safety whilst coordinating with the restored red-bricked factory façades. The Corten products were supplied with a unique seal coating that significantly reduces the risk of any leaching - ensuring the surrounding paving maintains its clean light colour. The symmetry in the positioning and layout of these elements creates an inviting space leading to the building’s entrance. Finally, a shelter and a number of cycle stands have been provided to ensure people traveling to the space on bikes have secure parking spaces. The new Ada Belfield Centre & Belper Library was previously an unused and derelict building, now it is a space to offer high-quality care that is connected to the local community. Events can now take place bringing residents and members of the public together by utilising the new external space as well as the Library, which also features a cafe.

Situated next to the River Irwell, it is the tallest building in the City of Salford and one of the tallest in Greater Manchester. It is home to 349 elegant rental apartments, including luxury penthouses. Artform were asked to provide external seating, tables & planters for 2 roof terraces. Our popular range of out-sider products were considered due to the lightweight nature for manoeuvring, material durability and a wide range of colour options.A key factor in the design discussion was the end client's concerns regarding the use of timber products for a variety of reasons, including maintenance resulting in alternative materials being sourced. One of the key benefits of the Loop range of products is that they don't need to be permanently fixed down and can also be filled with either sand or in this instance water, adding ballast weight, taking a product with an initial weight of 37kg to in excess of 250kg.

Atherleigh Park

Atherleigh Park

Bailey Street Furniture Group

Atherleigh Park is a new and innovative £40 million mental health hospital in Greater Manchester. The former Leigh East Amateur Rugby League ground is now a 3.9-hectare site dedicated to mental health. The location is split into two buildings to provide the best care quality for adult inpatients suffering from mental ill-health, as well as short-stay intermediate care for patients with dementia and memory conditions; and a specialist unit for older people with mental ill-health.There was a focus on making the hospital blend into the local area so as to become a part of the community, the face of the buildings were designed with tall windows and a red-cedar clad entrance to mimic the local buildings. The main entrance was also designed in a way to allow for local charities and services to utilise the space.BSFG were initially approached by both Kier construction and Fabrik to make a proposal for products that would be suitable for the internal courtyard areas of the hospital. This meant 10 individual courtyards for both phase 1 and 2.After a number of design meetings, the client decided on the courtyard package suggested by Streetscene. The package included bespoke planters, benches, seats and handrails, each with varying design amendments to meet the criteria of the client and the Hospital. The Springwell Planters and the Stoke Planters, were installed with GRP Liners instead of galvanised steel, to make the planters lighter and therefore easier to transport through the hospital for installation into the courtyards. The planters were also adjusted height wise to accommodate the range of ages and abilities that visit the hospital. The Deacon Benches and the ARIS Concrete Benches were installed with anti-tamper fixings to ensure they could not be removed after being established. Backrests and arm rests were added to some seating units to provide additional support to users when sitting and standing. All of the seating units were placed to be facing inwards to increase the sense of community and promote sociability. The second phase of the project was to work with Kier Construction to install products for the car park area of the Hospital. The Bromley Cycle Shelter, as well as standard bollards, and litter bins were implemented around the car park. The same seating and planters were also used to match the internal courtyards. The ARIS Concrete Benches were placed along the main path outside of the hospital. This modular range of seating provided relaxing seating areas with the design of soft edges and additional planter space.Roles & Responsibilities:Design liaison with architects and clientBudget and cost evaluationBespoke design to overcome financial restraintsManufactureLogistic and offload planningInstallationOutcomeWith early discussions taking place between all parties BSFG were able to coordinate the delivery and installation of all units within the allotted time constraints on the various phases of work. The 5 Boroughs Partnership NHS Foundation Trust's Simon Barber said:“Atherleigh Park is a facility the Leigh and Wigan communities, and indeed the North West, can be proud of.“I am incredibly proud of all the hard work that has gone into making Atherleigh Park a reality. It is a fantastic facility and will make a huge difference to the lives of not only the patients who are treated here but their families too.“We have involved service users from the start of the design process to help us achieve our aim of providing a purpose-built mental health environment which promotes enhanced privacy, dignity and respect with a focus on improving patients’ physical health as well as their mental wellbeing."

The entire ground floor of the Cycle Hub full of BSFG’s Easylift+ Two-Tier storage. Our Two-Tier was the ideal product for this kind of project due to the need to be as space efficient as possible. The bespoke entry and exit system BSFG created for this 500 space hub features a swipe card system linked to Southern Rail’s ‘The Key’ card. This one card provides access for commuters to the bike hub and doubles up as their travel card! BSFG designed the gate based on the exact needs for Brighton and the design can easily be adapted for use in any hub and in any location. The gate has been constructed from marine grade steel to ensure its strength and resistance to chipping and denting. It has also been used for safety reasons, with it being a poor conductor for electricity & heat as well as non-magnetic. It has also been fitted with rubber sensors to prevent collisions whilst exiting and entering, so the gates won’t close on any bikes unexpectedly!Other features at the hub include the Repair Station. Each cycle space is numbered so visitors can leave their bike lock keys and space number at the repair station and have their bike serviced while they are out and about. The numbered spaces also mean that local businesses with no facilities available for bike parking can hire bike spaces in the hub for their employees to encourage sustainable travel.

BSFG were approached to provide street furniture elements and a substantial bespoke seating unit to the newly created parkland area.Located off Oxford Road opposite the Whitworth Hall, Brunswick Park is the largest green space on the University of Manchester campus and includes seating areas, tree, shrub and wildflower planting and pedestrian/cycle paths. The parkland was created on the site of the former Brunswick Street to benefit staff, students, visitors and the local community, and is a central part of the University’s Campus Masterplan vision.Detailed drawings were produced by our in house design team to ensure the final product coordinated with the clients wishes. Working hand in hand with the architect and the contractor a concluding blueprint was produced.Due to the sheer size of the bespoke bench most of the work, including some of the final drawings, had to wait for the concrete and granite base detail to be in place to ensure accuracy in the installation and cost meaning around the clock work was needed to achieve the handover before the deadline. In addition to the monolithic bespoke bench BSFG were tasked with producing bespoke Picnic Sets to match existing street furniture elements on the site, a number of these were produced, each seating up to 10 people including several wheelchair-accessible versions. Due to the success of this design the Brunswick Picnic Set and Bench have been added to our product range.Stainless Steel Cycle stands and Concrete benches with timber cladding complete the suite of products for this vibrant green area in the heart of the University of Manchester campus. The final results are a stunning, unique in design and size seating area that complements the improvements being made to the surrounding area. Colwyn Bay Waterfront Redevelopment Phase 1

Colwyn Bay Waterfront Redevelopment Phase 1

Bailey Street Furniture Group

The Colwyn Bay Waterfront Project has been a major investment into the redevelopment of the town's seafront. The new promenade, measuring 2.3 miles long, has been designed to protect the town and its infrastructure from the effects of the sea. The project was split into two phases; the first, to remove what was originally there and to construct the new raised promenade including a road, cycleway and car parking. The second phase was to transform the promenade with further development as well as reinforce the defence structures.BSFG were selected to provide a number of bench designs as part of the first and second phase of the Promenade’s improvement works. The benches that were suggested had to be able to withstand the harsh weather conditions. In choosing benches that would be fit for purpose, material choice was a key part of the decision making process.Coastal environments are notoriously harsh environments for street furniture due to salt air having a rapidly eroding effect on most materials.During discussions with BCA Landscapes, Granite emerged as the favoured material of choice, as it has tested well in coastal environments and would be able to maintain its appearance for years to come.BSFG suggested a mixture of sleek reconstituted granite and simple natural granite benches. Anastasio-Makatite benches were chosen to face out to sea and to partially form planting beds with a variety of local flowers. This helped to improve the appearance of the promenade as well as providing a wonderful vantage point for people to sit and take in the sea views. Local points of reference and historical facts were also included on floor plaques directly in front of the benches so that they could be viewed and enjoyed whilst sitting on the seats.“One of the reasons the Anastasio-Makatite products were chosen was that the seat profile references the prevailing wind and the context much better than a square or rectangular profile, also the slanting profiles were less ‘blocky’ - Hussein Razak, BCA Landscape. From the client's perspective, Oliver Edwards, Conwy County Borough Council also had this to say...“We wanted to create areas for people to stop and make the most of the surroundings, but conventional benches would not have been in keeping with the design pallet or robust enough to withstand the harsh coastal environment. The aesthetics and durability make these units ideal for the new promenade.”Solid granite blocks were also added to the site, to maintain continuity with an earlier project in the development of the area.Outcome:The scheme was part of an improvement to the 20th century coastal defences and it was seen as the perfect opportunity to improve the promenade as a whole to attract both local residents and visitors, providing a boost to the local economy through tourism.“The promenade has been transformed with the street furniture playing a vital part in this. A large linear stretch of the promenade, which previously had no seating whatsoever now has large sections of welcoming seating which also doubles as a backing for planting beds. This has allowed us to create a welcoming space in what was previously a through route on the promenade.” - Oliver Edwards, Conwy County Borough Council

The existing Dalton Retail Outlet Park in the North East was to undergo an enhancement programme to modernise and improve the location, in order to create a modern and premium shopping destination.Contemporary external landscaping as well as lighting, bespoke planters, seating and signage were to be part of the planned renovations.Extensive improvements were planned throughout the retail park to enhance customer experience, as well as the introduction of meeting and dwelling points, with various site furniture elements.BSFG were asked by the client to provide a large selection of standard, customised and bespoke planters and seating solutions."There was already an awareness to all those involved from Bailey Street Furniture Group on this particular project. The type of product and service they offered was also well known within the design group. BSFG quickly understood the brief and presented the mall seating ideas, as well as developing bespoke planters for shop fronts and mall pause points. These were the perfect complement to the overall refurbishment."Jerry Hatch, Centre Manager at RealmBSFG maintained an involvement with the project throughout its three year development cycle and the Initial consultation with the client extended to architectural and project management teams to guide the design, supply and installation of all the chosen products. The project team produced a range of proposals with technical drawings, after each consultation with the client, to ensure a collaborative design that suited everyone.Product suggestions made by the BSFG team offered a consistent design and complemented the original brief, whilst offering a robust durable result and a cost effective solution. The FGP Litter Bins were required to be multifunctional, as part of the central recycling strategy. BSFG designed a bespoke colour coded signage system to complement the simple design of the FGP bin in order to achieve this. The project was not without its challenges. The site had difficult long linear stretches with limited access points which meant getting the large heavy Stone Bench units into position and installed was complicated work. As always, any other minor issues were dealt with swiftly and professionally by the operations team.Outcome:Following Phase 1 improvements, which included a new Cinema and restaurants, increasing the night time economy, the aim was to refresh and improve the retail mall, thus creating a modern, bright and appealing first class visitor experience and increased dwell time/ net spend.Improvements to the retail mall increased the number of visitors to the park and therefore increasing the revenue stream for the retailers.Jerry Hatch, Centre Manager at Realm again commented..."The quality of all the furniture elements has been high and the impact of the designs installed by BSFG has been excellent, with very positive feedback from our customers and tenants alike."

The Greengate Project in Manchester by Renaker, consists of the construction of two major towers in the city, providing an all-inclusive residential development of 497 apartments in total. The new scheme boasts a variety of premium facilities to attract prospective residents including a 24/7 concierge service, an on-site gymnasium, as well as a residents lounge and communal kitchen. The project has been designed specifically for the PRS market (private rented sector).BSFG were approached late-on in the scheme to advise on supplying a suitable external furniture package. The majority of the furniture was to be used for a communal courtyard area for all residents to use.The furniture would have to be installed prior to flags and timber decking being installed by other trades people. There were numerous customisations that needed to be millimetre perfect in order to meet aesthetic & site specific requirements such as the extension to the legs, so that the fixings were concealed after installation. This would allow other contractors to work around the benches once they were installed. The range of furniture BSFG proposed for the scheme was all designed by our in house design team, who had to ensure the products supplied matched the high spec of the project. This included examples such as the wall mounted bench, which was designed and manufactured before the wall it was to be fixed to had even been built. The precision engineered bench was able to be assembled & constructed on site by a Renaker joiner.Roles & Responsibilities:Initial design consultationAccurate costing detailBespoke product design & modification to meet site measurementsCollaborationDefect free signoffFoundation and general arrangement base layout detailsManufacture, supply and installationProject management and client liaisonOutcomeFrom the time the initial enquiry was received by BSFG, they priced, designed, proposed drawings, approved, manufactured and installed the new products all within an eight week window. The project demonstrated not only a high level of flexibility and expertise in terms of bespoke products design, but all carried out under extremely short and demanding deadlines.Through teamwork, ingenuity and with clear and frequent communication, all challenges were overcome and the end result of this project was a resounding success for all parties.

Continuing its work at Wood Wharf development in Canary Wharf, Artform Urban supplied a range of bespoke Cumaru seating to Harbour Quay Gardens as finishing touches to complete an extensive phase of the project.Harbour Quay is a new development of residential blocks, office and retail buildings as well as extensive parks & green spaces located on the Isle of Dogs in the London Borough of Tower Hamlets. It is the first time residential properties have been built on the Canary Wharf site. This recent phase seamlessly connects to Artform's previous work at Wood Wharf opening up the waterside space with Cumaru benches and seats running in an impressive line alongside the edge of the docks. The benches and seats feature a traditional and minimal design with high consideration for quality and precision - Cumaru was selected for the benches to ensure consistency across the site, and to match with the boardwalk and existing street furniture. Additional security points were included in a number of seats at certain areas of the site to allow fixings for security barriers. As in the previous project, the seats are branded with laser etched cover plates that feature the Canary Wharf logo whilst also obscuring fixings. Alongside the Cumaru seating, Mooring Point units have been supplied with integrated timber seats on the top. These units securely house all the utility hookup points for boats mooring on the waterfront. The design process was incredibly prescriptive due to the close cooperation needed between the bespoke bench and all the specific utility connection points contained within - becoming one of the most complicated design and approval processes Artform Urban have ever been involved with. The bench consists of multiple internal compartments and individual access doors, some cleverly concealed within the timber cladding. As final additions to the project, Steely Can litter bins have been installed, a product that Artform have consistently supplied to Canary Wharf for over 10 years. The usual design, quality, and service provided by Artform Urban matched the expectations of the UK’s most prestigious developments by delivering high-quality street furniture to this vibrant and continually expanding new urban space.

Artform Urban Furniture was appointed by Seddon Construction to provide external furniture to a state-of-the-art new Veterinary School in Staffordshire. The Harper & Keele Veterinary School is a joint venture with Harper Adams University and is located on Keele University’s campus. The building is a modern take on the traditional surrounding redbrick architecture. Located in North Staffordshire, the rural campus location consists of extensive woods and lakes, an ideal location for the country’s future vets.To complement the building's distinctive raw umber colour the client opted for a range of corten street furniture. Corten Steel is sandblasted before proceeding with the oxidation process, designed to limit water consumption and achieve a more consistent finish. Pre-Weathering reduces the level of washout onto surrounding surfaces, units can be fully sealed with anti washout or wax protection treatment to eliminate leakage altogether. The street furniture package was to be positioned around the building's entrances and main thoroughfares. The selection of pre-weathered Corten Steel products includes Spencer T Litter Bins which have a modern tapered design, Cube bollards that can also be used as seating, and Vision Bollards that have an in-built LED light that provides a subtle ambient light for the walkways and entrance. Removable Stainless Steel Bollards were also supplied to provide restricted access for authorised vehicles to particular areas of the campus. The Harper & Keele Veterinary School is now a site that provides excellent teaching to aspiring vets, and has a safe and harmonious outdoor space for respite from the heavy workload.

At BSFG, we are pioneering the way for enhanced security cycle hubs. Our latest project is this striking hub for Staff Bike Parking at Heathrow Airport as part of the massive Main Tunnel Refurb Project. Completed and opened at the end of July, this is our first Airport project, having already firmly established ourselves in other avenues of public travel across the country!Heathrow Airport Cycle Hub is a part of the Airport dedicated to promote sustainable travel options and support the thousands of staff at the airport who choose to cycle into work. They required extra cycle storage due to the re- furbishment of the main tunnel at Heathrow which has meant cyclists can now avoid cycling through the main tunnel by simply parking their bike at the cycle hub and taking the bus from the adjacent bus-stop to various locations around this extensive airport. The decision for Heathrow Cycle Hub providing this shelter was the option favoured by the sustainable cycle team. The Cycle Hub wanted to provide Staff with a high-security, covered cycle storage system and opted for this 122 space two-tier system in a bespoke, opaque-walled building with our specialist key fob entry system, security lighting and CCTV.The key fob system is one of our simple but effective security options. Each member of staff wishing to use the new system will have their own fob ensuring that access is restricted to staff only. For added security, we also installed CCTV cameras and security lighting so the airport’s cyclists can assuage any anxieties over storing their bikes for long or short lengths of time at the world’s busiest airport. To add a more personalised touch to the new shelter, we designed the advertising on the hub to match the rest of Heathrow Airports Cycle Hub branding.

Hudson Quarter is a modern development consisting of four buildings that surround a central courtyard. The £35 million investment has provided 127 apartments over three buildings and a Grade A office space. The site sits on the former grounds of the city’s first railway station and within the ancient city walls. To remain sympathetic to these historic factors and York’s distinctive character the buildings have been deliberately built close together, to mimic tight spaces in the city. The external walls are angled to reflect the organic nature of York’s core. As a connection with its railway past the apartment blocks are all named after stations – Waverley, Victoria, and Kings. Hudson Quarter’s buildings have been carefully designed to step down from Toft Green towards the City Walls to create a new public pedestrian connection between the nearby train station and the Micklegate area. It is here that Artforms Cestis Litter Bins have been supplied to provide a robust waste management solution. The Cestis litter bin features a stylish and simple design with a cast aluminium pole, a galvanised steel container and cast aluminium cover. Further to this, a number of Cafe Cycle Stands with matching powder coated finish to the bins have been installed running parallel to the exterior of the building and ancient walls. At Jaguar Land Rover, the existing employee bike storage was outdated, oversubscribed and becoming a hassle to maintain. At Jaguar Land Rover, the existing employee bike storage was outdated, oversubscribed and becoming a hassle to maintain. Only 70 bike spaces were available using wide metal stands which meant that at least 2 locks would be required to lock both the frame and on wheel of the bike. Due to the high number of employees that cycled to work at the factory, the number of spaces needed to improve drastically to accommodate everyone. BSFG visited site and drew up a new plan for storage using our Easylift+ two-tier system and double height Brighton shelters to make the most of the space available. The factory site itself was secure so no gated enclosure was necessary, the entrance to the compound was fenced off so that we could install all the way down the side, and a new entrance was made. The installation of the new storage had to co-ordinate with the removal of the existing storage as efficiently as possible to ensure that there was minimum disruption to the factory and the employees.Jaguar specified a particular week that would work best due to an annual factory shutdown, so BSFG had to ensure the site was cleared and new storage completely installed during this week. We maintained contact with the client both through our Installation Team on site and via. our office so that all parties were made aware of progress for peace of mind!We installed 196 new bike spaces, almost triple the amount available before, and powder coated both the Easylift and shelters to a bespoke colour. Our Easylift+ is the only two-tier bike storage solution whose upper arm reaches all the way to the floor and is equipped with a gas-assisted lift. This make it as user-friendly as possible as users do not have to lift the full weight of the bike onto the arm, they can then lock their bike frame and wheel using the security loops on the frame of the Easylift+.With minimum effort required from the user to lightly pull the upper arm off the floor, the gas-assist does the rest of the work and the upper arm lifts up on its own and is pushed gently back into place. Having been tested over 18,000 times, the Easylift+ is also proved to be a high quality product with a long performance lifespan. Each testing represents a loading and unloading of a bike so this testing roughly equates to it being used 4 times a day for 12 years without any deterioration in the product! We also installed a Bike Repair Stand and Public Bike Pump in the enclosure so users storing their bikes also had access to tools for basic bike repairs. During the installation we received great feedback about our installation team from the Jaguar site contact – ‘Lads are working really well, their conduct, professionalism and attitude is a credit to you.’- after they had managed to install all 9 shelters in one day! This site transformation is a brilliant example of the difference that can be made in both ease of use and aesthetic bike storage by ensuring your bike facilities are up to date and of a good quality.

Swanke Hayden Connell Architects approached us to assist them in planning 200 bike parking spaces into a basement area within the new KPMG Head office at Canary Wharf, London. The current area had accommodate 200 bikes spaces but also full change facilities, a drying room, lockers, showers and toilets. Further to this the client wanted to achieve BREEAM out-standing!The original CAD drawing by Swanke Hayden Connell only contained 120 cycle parking spaces using traditional bike stands. This original layout would not have earned the project the necessary credits to achieve the required BREEAM rating.Once we received the plans from Swanke Hayden Connell Architects, we began planning the area with Spacepods. We choose Spacepods as they can save up to 50% of the space required by traditional bike stands and are a cyclist friendly, easy to use, semi-vertical system. The final plan we generated for Swanke Hayden Connell Architects contained the 200 bikes spaces they required and in less space then the original layout using traditional bike stands. Due to this the rest of the basement area could be planned containing all the requirements for the project to achieve a BREEAM outstanding rating!

The Calls is a popular and vibrant waterfront area in Leeds, attracting creative thinking and commercial businesses alike.Within a small passageway, a cosy urban spot has been created by adding the bright green version of the Boa seating, adding life and colour to what used to be a rather dull, uninteresting space.Boa is a functionally sculptural piece of furniture for all ages to sit, lie or stand on – whether indoors and outside. Boa can be used in two fundamentally different basic positions (turned 90 degrees), typically set up in groups to create spaces within spaces.Outcome:This simple but effective Boa installation has transformed what was previously an uninspiring and under utilised space. In addition to introducing a welcome splash of vibrant colour, the welcoming feeling of informality conveyed by Boa has encouraged users to interact with the re-invented space spontaneously and to feel relaxed whilst gathering & lounging in the area. The landscape architects Yorkshire Design Group commented "It’s been a pleasure to do this project, as it has been a simple but successful intervention, using great design in the right place. Ten minutes after we installed them, they were already in use, and have since been happily adopted by the locals and the passers-by."

Getting more residents to jump on a bike will improve health and fitness levels, and reduce vehicle emissions to create a more pleasant environment for everyone. We recognise that people need to feel confident whilst cycling so in addition to making routes safer, we offer a range of activities to encourage people to jump on a bike and feel more confident about cycling.” – LB of Waltham Forest, Mini-Holland SchemeSeveral Cycle Hubs were planned across the Borough, with the Cycle Hub at Leyton earmarked from the start of the project as being the flagship Hub.Situated in one of the busiest commuting areas and central to Leyton town, the Hub needed to be a beacon of the Mini-Holland project, encapsulating the passion and commitment of Waltham Forest towards cycling.Cyclepods submitted our two-storey design to Waltham Forest Council, ours was the only double level design and it opened the eyes of the Project Managers to the possibilities that could be achieved. Waltham Forest then decided that they would go bigger and better with the Leyton Hub, and decided to make it a project in it’s own right so it would make a bigger impact. Our proposed solution that provided more cycle parking spaces and maximised the use of the limited available space in an innovative and striking design.
