The Project

The Derby Manufacturing University Technical College (UTC) has been granted planning approval by Derby City Council. The £8 million state-of-the-art education facility is being delivered by BAM Construct UK, with architectural design by Maber Architects.

Once completed, the UTC will accommodate up to 600 students aged 14 to 19, offering a curriculum that combines core GCSEs and A-Levels with specialised engineering qualifications. This is supported by a strong emphasis on project-based learning, industry placements, employer site visits, and lectures from industry professionals – equipping students with the skills and experience required for future careers in engineering and manufacturing.

The Challenge

The brief called for a washroom system that could be effectively integrated into an open-plan environment, with cubicles and solid surface vanities located directly off the main corridor.

Key requirements included:

• Maximising user safety
• Supporting an anti-bullying strategy
• Creating a fully visible, yet private space

Standard vanity units and sink frontages were not suitable for this layout, prompting the need for a completely bespoke wash station solution tailored to the school’s safeguarding and design criteria.

The Solution

We were proud to partner with BAM Construction to supply and install our Skyline Cubicle Range for the Derby Manufacturing UTC.

Designed specifically for open-plan and high-visibility washroom environments, the Skyline Range offers:

• Full-height cubicles with doors, pilasters, and partitions for maximum privacy and discretion
• A sleek, modern design ideal for open, unisex, or gender-neutral facilities
• Optional bespoke configurations to suit project-specific needs

Available in three specification options, the Skyline Range caters to both budget-conscious projects and those requiring enhanced durability.

The result is a robust, visually appealing, and safety-conscious washroom system that complements the cutting-edge ethos of the UTC and supports the wellbeing of its students.
