OVERVIEW
The Afton Clean Water Tank (CWT) case study highlights an innovative waterproofing solution for a reservoir roof managed by Scottish Water in East Ayrshire. The project tackled a brittle and delaminating waterproofing layer over the tank’s reinforced concrete roof. Scottish Water tasked Mackenzie Construction, in collaboration with Fosroc, to deliver a robust, long-lasting solution with a minimum 20-year warranty.
Following a detailed site inspection, the team employed Fosroc’s high-performance Proofex Primer SP—the first time it was used on a reservoir roof. This spray-applied primer, paired with Proofex 3000 self-adhesive membrane and Proofex Sheetdrain 80, created a durable, watertight surface. Additional sealing and UV-resistant waterproofing addressed exposed areas, ensuring a comprehensive finish.
The solution delivered faster application, reduced material waste, and performed well in Scotland’s challenging weather conditions. It also minimized packaging and preparation time, further enhancing efficiency. The success of this project has led to the proposed use of this system in future Scottish Water applications, demonstrating its scalability and long-term reliability.
