I'm a manufacturer

Wago, Rugby

OVERVIEW

Wago, a leading manufacturer of electrical components, are building a new site in Rugby and needed an internal door manufacturer to supply both fire rated and non-fire rated internal doors.

Wago was a large project that required extensive design support to achieve the client’s desired specifications and some bespoke options.

MCS Group LTD, the main contractor working on the Wago project, engaged Modulo as a potential manufacturer for the internal doors. Modulo’s detailed design support, on-site adjustable architrave and quality of door made Modulo the right manufacturer to specify.

Michael Hempsey, the Project Manager for MCS Group LTD, spoke to Modulo to review if the timber door specification and installation were successful.

Why did you engage Modulo

Overall, it was the cost of the product that initially attracted us to Modulo. But when we actually got into the nitty gritty of it, the engagement the sales team had, and the level of knowledge made it really easy to run through what we needed.

We have a client here that wants the highest-spec timber doors, so having the knowledge from Modulo’s side in the meetings, as well as the quotes, made it a no-brainer. So, this is why we used Modulo.

Have you used Modulo before?

This is the first time I have personally used Modulo and, depending on how prices go in the future, it won’t be the last. The product Modulo has delivered has been quality. It’s the first time I have used the adjustable architrave, which is something I haven’t seen before. That level of ease, when the team came to install the doorset is fantastic.

Did you need to use the adjustable architrave?

We had a need for the adjustable architrave as we had a lot of doors and there is always some variance with the door schedule. If there is a little bit of blemish, the structural opening can easily change from 100mm to 115mm. So having the option for the adjustable architrave in the back of our mind, where no matter what we come up against we can adjust the door width to size.

Out of the adjustable architrave, the door quality, and cost; which was of most value to you?

All of it. Modulo wasn’t the cheapest but not the most expensive but the product you delivered for that cost was incredible. When I see a door delivery like Modulo’s and it has been packaged the way it has been packaged, you can see the level of care from leaving Modulo to coming to the site. So that level of packaging is another element, combined with the cost and quality of the door which makes it cheaper for us.

Another thing I liked was, with the adjustable architrave Modulo send brass screws with the hinges so you can fit the door. The architrave was the last thing to go on, so if the brass hinges were too short, we could take them out, fit the architrave and put the other screws in. It’s that level of detail from Modulo that makes my job and the job of the installer much easier. It’s fantastic really.

How easy were the doors to install?

The fire doors were a two-operative job but an FD90 is definitely a two-operative job and an FD60 is a borderline two-operative job. But this is the way the industry is going, especially after certain things have happened on the fire compliance side.

The NFR timber doors were much easier to install, like a knife through butter. We were installing about one floor of doors in two days.

What went well with the project?

The level of specification we had to reach for our client was met, and the level of communication was second to none. We didn’t have to wait around and didn’t have to chase anyone, Modulo was on it from the get-go. That makes our job a lot easier, as it gives our client and me, being the main contractor, confidence. That level of communication is key to what we do. If you don’t have that level of communication, things like the access control can potentially slip through the net and then we are constantly on the phone to each other with issues and we haven’t really had problems on this project.

Mark Carter (Project Manager) has been, since I have been dealing with him for the last 4-5 months an absolute legend of a guy, he is fantastic. I emailed him on Tuesday of this week with an issue with these cylinders. He emailed me straight back saying he couldn’t deal with it that second but would get on it as soon as possible and I had an email on the following day with the quotation. He is great.

Did anything go wrong?

On some of the 130mm and 170mm doors the adjustable frame extenders didn’t come for them, there should have been a flat pack of 10. I literally spoke to Mark on Wednesday and I had adjustable frame extenders on Friday morning. So again, it goes back to that level of customer service and level of knowledge from Modulo’s side. Mark didn’t miss a beat. The way Mark turned around the extenders was incredible. This project went as smoothly as it could have gone on the door side.

Anything else you would like to add?

Everything is just incredible. Another thing is, Modulo hadn’t done many FD90 doors but they turned out fantastic and as heavy as they are with the door closer on them, they open really easily. The bespoke options turned out incredible.

At Modulo, we pride ourselves on our brand promise and offering detailed design support and our Halo Assist program to our customers. Speak to us today, if you would like to discuss how to achieve a high quality, compliant timber doorset solution for your project.
