"My Hotel in Bucharest..." timber tiles create a treasure chest

"My Hotel in Bucharest..." timber tiles create a treasure chest

Wallbarn Ltd

We were contacted by a customer in Bucharest trying to source our Ipe Timber Tiles. He was concerned about durability as Romania has extremes of hot and cold, and torrential rainfall. We reassured him that even with a minimum gap drainage would be sufficient and the suspended tiles system would ensure longevity. He selected the Ipe timber tiles mounted onto fixed height 14mm Plastic Pad. To protect against the extreme weather the tiles were then treated with a generic wood preserve on site, giving them a rich, luxurious finish and producing the "treasure chest" George Ezra would be proud of. https://www.wallbarn.com/case-study/timber-tiles-cata-romania/

Proteus Waterproofing

On the Grand Union Canal in Hemel Hempstead, the Nash Mills Wharf housing development features a range of stylish new build 1-4 bedroom houses and luxury apartments offering high quality waterside living in this Hertfordshire town. With a waterproofing system required to protect the concrete podium above the ground floor car park, a selection of hot and cold applied products were provided by Proteus Waterproofing that met the requirements of the client Linden Homes. The licensed roofing contractor worked with Proteus Waterproofing on a dual system specification which included the fast and economical Proteus Hot-Melt waterproofing system, and for the intricate detailing around upstands and to avoid hot works around the plastic soil and vent pipes, the Cold Melt® waterproofing system was the ideal solution.Fast, hassle-free applicationWith the podium deck covering 3000m2, the Proteus Hot Melt® system was the optimum waterproofing solution for a robust, cost effective, seamless and fast application. This solution worked exceptionally well for the Licensed Contractor and is compatible with the fast applied Cold Melt® solution which was used for high detail items including plastic soil and vent pipes and upstands. There was also the added challenge of wet brickwork and an exacting building program to keep to. To overcome this problem, Proteus isolated the wet substrate with Pro-DPM Primer (Damp Proof Primer) which can be applied to green concrete 3 days old and then followed immediately by the Proteus waterproofing system. This enabled the Cold Melt® to be installed on to the vertical elevations will no loss of time.Quality controlProteus Waterproofing worked in close partnership with its Licensed Contractor to successfully deliver the project to a very high standard within the required timeframe.Long term performanceIncorporating recycled rubber-crumb and other organically grown products, Cold Melt® creates an elastomeric, seamless, cold applied membrane and can outlast the lifetime of the substrate on which it is installed.

Creating caption stands for Beaulieu Museum using RecoStakes

Creating caption stands for Beaulieu Museum using RecoStakes

GCL Products Ltd

Providing relevant information in a short, concise and easy-to-read way is vital for museums and events when displaying items such as sculptures, historic artefacts or displays. This is why ensuring you create the perfect caption in front of your display is of the utmost importance to provide all of the relevant information without visitors losing interest or missing the caption completely.About The ProjectThis case study highlights the application of RecoStakes at Beaulieu Museum for their Sculpture at Beaulieu 2023 event. This event showcases the remarkable work of over 57 renowned sculptors and runs from June 17th to September 24th. Beaulieu Museum aimed to provide their visitors with perfectly positioned sculpture captions and sought an attractive, durable and long-lasting solution."We hold a sculpture exhibition every other year at Beaulieu, here in the New Forest. Whilst Beaulieu is best known for the world-famous National Motor Museum, it is also the home of Palace House, the Montagu family's ancestral home. The exhibition features 300 sculptures in Palace House and throughout its grounds and gardens.""We wanted to enhance the exhibition this year with captions for each of the sculptures, displaying the sculpture name, artist and a QR code taking the visiting through to a dedicated webpage with more information. The outdoor captions needed to be at a height and angle that made it easy for the visitor to read. We considered using wood, but from experience these haven't lasted well from year to year. Metal posts were too expensive.""One of the team then came across GCL Products and your RecoStake and thought with some adaptation that they could work. We bought a couple of samples of the grey 60cm stake and mocked up a caption by chop sawing a 45-degree angle on the top of the post and mounting with two screws a backboard onto the post. We then printed each caption on a black die-bond board and stuck it to the caption post." - Rachael at Beaulieu Enterprises LtdWhat Are RecoStakes?RecoStakes, part of our lawn edging fixings collection, are made entirely from recycled plastic waste generated by consumers. These premium fixings are meticulously designed and crafted to be used alongside RecoEdge edging rolls. They offer robust, durable, weatherproof, and easy-to-install solutions for creating attractive separations between different landscaped areas. The unique attributes of RecoStakes, derived from their use of recycled plastic waste, made them an ideal choice for Beaulieu Museum and their sculpture caption stands. The 600mm RecoStakes provided the museum with sturdy and reliable stands at the desired height. Moreover, they can be reused for future events, thereby reducing costs. Conclusion"With these tests being a success, we installed circa 200 of these posts in the final days of installation, and they are looking great and lasting well. We are confident given the materials they are made from that they will last for several exhibitions to come." - Rachael at Beaulieu Enterprises LtdWe are thrilled to witness the successful and innovative implementation of RecoStakes at Beaulieu Museum. Our thanks go to Rachael and the team for selecting our recycled plastic stakes to create captivating captions and for sharing photos of their remarkable event. We are confident it will be a resounding success. If you have any enquiries regarding our product range, please don't hesitate to contact us. Porofoam 60 Second Case Study

Porofoam 60 Second Case Study

CEMEX UK

St Vincents Church in Sheffield was to be transformed into a new student accommodation complex. The renovation project required a mass filling of the existing basement with 20N/mm2 concrete. When contractor, Paul John construction approached CEMEX for a suitable voidfill solution, we proposed to use Porofoam, our low density foamed concrete.Using Porofoam enabled the pour to be completed in less than half the time than using a standard concrete. Due to it’s reduced plastic density Porofoam could be placed in much thicker layers reducing lateral pressures exerted on the 165 year old internal walls of the basement.Additionally, Porofoam is self-compacting and self-levelling, which made it much easier for the contractor to place in the network of basement chambers.Porofoam is available in a range of densities and strengths and is manufactured using our proprietary CEMEX admixtures. For this project CEMEX delivered around 60m3 of pre-mixed Porofoam over 2 days to fill the void which achieved the required 20N/mm2 concrete strength.

Alumasc Water Management Solutions

Alumasc Skyline Facia, Soffit & Copings, part of Alumasc Water Management Solutions (AWMS), provided the perfect finishing touch for four £2 million homes on the site of a former nursing home in Jersey. The design of the new homes called for a practical fascia and soffit system which would be aesthetically pleasing and competitively priced. The architect, Scott Smith of Godel Architects, worked with Jeff Russ, the contractor, and Precision Plastics, Alumasc’s Jersey stockists, to achieve the perfect look. The first part of the project involved roof clad overhangs and producing a complex fascia/coping system. When the developer, Barry Noel, saw the quality and appearance of the installation, he asked the contractor to use Skyline for the balconies too.“We specified Skyline because we know we can rely on it,” says Contractor Jeff Russ. “It’s easy to handle and its lightweight modular design means it’s easy to fit too. It’s maintenance free, durable and because it’s available in a wide range of colours and design options we know it will look great too.”

Tour Alto, La Défense, Paris - Knauf DB Green Raised Floor System

Access Floors Distribution

The German company Knauf Integral was able to prevail against competitors with its GIFAfloor DB green raised floor system. A maximum flexible and individual floor due to the interchangeability of the individual panels, a non-combustible building material with A1 classification and the unproblematic recycling due to the lack of plastic edging, as is used in conventional raised floor elements, were decisive for the selection.Flexibility, health in the workplace and sustainability in construction - the 'Tour Alto' in Paris La DéfenseIn the Paris suburb of Courbevoie, in the office district of La Défense, the foundation stone was laid for the 'Tour Alto' - a 160 m high skyscraper which, after its planned completion in 2020, will have a usable area of 51,200 m2 next to countless offices, numerous restaurants, bars and fitness studios etc. will accommodate. For the floor structure, the property developer decided on the double floor 'GIFAfloor DB green' from Knauf Integral, paying particular attention to the aspects of flexibility, health, environmental protection and sustainability in buildings. The 'Tour Alto' office tower in the west of Paris extends over 38 floors and is part of the high-rise backdrop of the La Défense office district. Nevertheless, Bouygues, one of the largest property developers in the world, is setting new standards in construction: installed products not only have to be as flexible as possible in their design and use, they also have to meet high standards of sustainability and environmental compatibility as well as the highest health standards for people, who will do their jobs there every day.A maximum flexible and individual floor due to the interchangeability of the individual panels, a non-flammable building material with A1 classification and the unproblematic recycling due to the lack of plastic edging, as is used in conventional raised floor elements, were decisive for the selection. In addition, health and environmentally friendly aspects were the absolute focus of the project for the property developer: The selected product must contribute to excellent indoor air quality and all materials that come into contact with the indoor air should have A + according to French in terms of VOC and formaldehyde emissions Emission class to be rated. GIFAfloor DB green elements have exactly this A + certification - the decisive advantage compared to the commonly used raised floors with chipboard supports that contain formaldehyde. Independent (building) biological analysis laboratories also prove the excellent quality through their tests: Eurofins certifies the product as suitable for indoor use, and the Institute for Building Biology in Rosenheim gives the verdict " recommended ''. This ensures a healthy working environment for employees. With GIFAfloor DB green, Knauf Integral offers a sustainable and health-friendly double floor solution for flexible, high-quality commercial interior design. The elements consist of the homogeneous gypsum fiber material GIFAtec and are available in different thicknesses depending on the requirements.

Alumasc Water Management Solutions

Stowford Mill, built in 1787, is one of Devon’s oldest historic industrial sites to still be expanding.Because of its iconic features and characteristic atmosphere, Stowford Mill has long been established as one of the trendiest places to work, eat and shop, bringing commerce and prosperity to the surrounding area, and forcing the town to expand to make room for tourists who just never wanted to leave.Part of this expansion will eventually include Burrington Estates’ eight-acre vibrant community of contemporary new homes. This new development, for which the main contractor is URBN, is due for completion in 2023.Started in March 2018, the existing homes already include Alumasc Rainwater Infinity Steel gutters and downpipes, specified to provide eco-friendly, discreet and resilient water management that will last. Crucially, this system was favoured to the use of plastic systems, to meet the demand for a readily available product that was both environmentally- and price-conscious.As the new development creates a unique new environment in which to live, work and relax in the midst of the historic area, the most important part of the project was to keep the best of the stunning architectural heritage already there, whilst finding innovative ways to incorporate the latest modern building design. Helping to bridge this gap between the historic and the modern, AWMS offered a solution.“Alumasc systems were chosen as it was the project’s requirements to specifically use steel for gutters and downpipes,” David Loader, Key Account Manager at Alumasc, explained.

Located in Edinburgh’s prestigious Charlotte Square, these former National Trust for Scotland offices havebeen refurbished and redeveloped into commercialaccommodation.Originally designed by Robert Adam in 1791, the restorationof these 6 A-listed townhouses sees the architecturalintegrity of these neo classical facades, fully restored. Aswell as restoring the buildings exterior and interior, MorganMcDonnell Architects have also redeveloped the areabehind these old Georgian houses, linking the 3 centraltownhouses to a contemporary lightweight glass and ETFE(a fluorine based plastic) covered courtyard to provide32,000 ft2 of grade A office space. The balanced contrast between the old exterior andmodern interior is reflected throughout the building’s fabric, especially it’s ironmongery. A traditional oval design wasapproved for the knob handles as it provided the mostgrip available. A polished chrome finish was chosen asMorgan McDonnell Architects wanted a modern feel to thehardware whilst being traditionally sensitive to the age ofthe building. Initially Morgan McDonnell Architects wantedto use lever handles, but due to the listed status of thebuilding and the design of the doors (many of the originaldoors were refurbished) a knob handle was deemed themost suitable.Working with Morgan McDonnell Architects, Allgood Plcprovided a combined ironmongery and access controlpackage that included: hinges, door closers, locks, kickplates, signage and concealed electromagnetic locks. Ikea Hammersmith - public ream seating & planters

Furnitubes International Ltd

Project details: King Street in Hammersmith, a bustling city shopping street, popular for its variety of shops, restaurants and entertainment venues. At the heart of the highstreet lies Livat, which was previously known as Kings Mall before being acquired by IKEA's parent company Ingka Centres. Since the acquisition the centre has undergone a range of improvement works inside and outside to provide a more inviting and inclusive meeting place for locals. As part of the regeneration works, a brand new, first-of-its-kind IKEA showroom store opened, located in the newly refurbished Livat shopping mall. In addition, a separate cycling path has been built along Kings Street.Project challenges:Since there is considerable footfall along Kings Street, the requirement for street furniture meant it needed to be durable enough to withstand frequent usage, and also fit with IKEA and Livat’s branding.Project solution:Furnitubes’ Uniun seating and planter modules were the perfect solution - manufactured from fully recyclable rotationally-moulded LLDPE - a sturdy, thick and waterproof plastic. The solid material means scuffs will not expose any base material of a different colour, preserving the modules and keeping maintenance to a minimum. The Uniun seating and planters surround the entrances of the IKEA store and the Livat shopping centre, providing resting spots in between shopping trips and a welcoming place to relax for shoppers and locals alike.

Bourne Estate - Flat Gauge Brick Feature Arch Lintels

Bourne Estate - Flat Gauge Brick Feature Arch Lintels

IG Lintels

Bourne Estate is a Grade II listed building in the London Borough of Camden. The perimeter blocks face Clerkenwell Road, Leather Lane and Portpool Lane forming a strong uniformed frontage. Its spatial character is inward facing, with interior blocks detached and positioned in parallel rows with several areas of open space. Matthew Lloyd Architects plans were granted permission for the redevelopment of Bourne Estate. The scheme included the demolition and provision of 75 mixed tenure homes, with improved public realm and open spaces. Higgins Construction completed the £19.0m residential project using IG lintels bespoke flat gauge brick slip feature lintels.Challenge:Bourne Estate is an example of early London City Council residential housing estates built in the 1900’s. Matthew Lloyd Architects in partnership with Higgins Construction wanted to respond to the original architecture of the buildings, consisting of fine brick detailing, by emulating the pride and care shown in the old design within the new housing architecture plans. Planning permission stipulated for all materials and characteristics of the area to be retained and kept in good repair or replicated where no other alternatives are available.Solution:IG’s technical engineer designed 215mm high flat gauge brick slip feature lintels accommodating a series of brick spans; 910mm, 1360mm, 1472mm and 1585mm. All bricks were cut and bonded offsite onto the load bearing lintels.A consignment of bricks were collected from site to guarantee both quality and reliability in matching the surrounding brickwork. The ceramic bricks were carefully cut in a mitre fashion to conceal the red clay finish underneath and ensure that the ceramic finish on the mitre did not splinter which minimalised brick wastage. All the bricks cut were bonded in a rowlock pattern using BBA approved construction adhesive in a controlled environment without disruption from the natural weather. Each prefabricated single piece unit was delivered in line with the build schedule onsite. This reduced health and safety concerns by eliminating the requirement for skilled labour working from height for a prolonged period of time in a busy London area.Encompassing both buildings and landscape, the redevelopment strengthens the character of the conservation area through its careful design, by paying attention to the articulation of the facades. The contrasting brick types used on the project add to the new design creating pleasing views clearly defining key routes and boundaries.

Argos Distribution Centre, Castlegate, Wolverhampton

Argos Distribution Centre, Castlegate, Wolverhampton

Ampteam Ltd

The UNIFOLD® Gutter Lining System has recently been installed within five valley gutters, totalling more than 700metres, on the Argos Distribution Centre, Castlegate, Wolverhampton. The facility, operated on behalf of Argos by Wincanton, had experienced severe storm water ingress due to the overwhelming of the existing gutters and outlets, causing severe damage and disruption. The roof had been over-sheeted several years ago and the existing gutters were fitted with a continuous plastics liner at this time. This liner was not lying flat due to expansion and contraction problems, leaving raised areas within the gutter, further reducing the available capacity and contributing to the problems being experienced.Ampteam Limited along with rainwater drainage experts CRM Rainwater Drainage were invited to propose a solution to the problem.Survey and DesignFollowing a survey by Ampteam and CRM, a design solution was provided for the gutters. As the existing gutter had insufficient capacity and any modification to the roof at the eaves position to enlarge the gutter was not an option, the design solution required the use of all of the available space within the eaves cavity. The situation was complicated by the need to control works on the asbestos cement gutters on a building constantly in use. This in turn meant that no extra outlets could be introduced and the existing outlets could not be enlarged. The solution involved the installation of a multi-hinged Unifold gutter, fitted and sealed to the underside of the roof sheet in order to maximise the gutter capacity, combined with specially designed siphonic outlets. As the eaves conditions varied along the gutter runs and within each gutter and access was tight, the UNIFOLD® was supplied with 7no hinges. This facilitated relatively easy installation in very difficult circumstances.Siphonic OutletsThe UNIFOLD® gutter was also provided with factory fabricated side boxes to house the unique siphonic outlets that were designed and tested by Dr Malcolm Wearing of CRM Rainwater Drainage.Although the capacity of the gutters had been increased to the maximum given the existing roof conditions, these siphonic outlets, manufactured and installed by Aquaphonixs Limited, were essential to improve the drainage performance of the existing outlets and to allow the system to function without any additional outlets.Fan shaped, semi-circular siphonic outlets with an offset 100mm diameter tailpipe were specially designed to fit inside the UNIFOLD® side boxes and into the existing 150mm diameter outlets. The siphonic outlet tailpipes were connected to flexible tubes, sleeved into the existing plastic downpipes. The custom made outlets were optimised and tested in laboratory conditions and proved to provide a capacity of over 27litres/second, ten times the capacity of a standard 100mm diameter outlet.Calculations to prove the design solutions of both Unifold gutters and siphonic outlets were provided by CRM Rainwater Drainage.InstallationThe UNIFOLD® gutter system was installed by approved contractors Traditional Structures Limited who, due to the relative complexity of the contract, originally forecast a period of 7 weeks to complete the installation.First class organisation, excellent site personnel and attention to detail by both Traditional Structures and Ampteam Limited meant that the installation was completed in just over 4 weeks with no disruption to processes within the building.

SMART GATE AND MESH IN PAVILION MAKEOVER

Zaun Limited

The Trumpington Residents’ Association and Cambridge City Council wanted to update a 60-year-old pavilion at the heart of the village in a £600,000 community project.Cambridge architects 5th Studio designed a striking colourful exterior cladding. They turned to an artist specialising in the treatment and perimeter fencing manufacturer Zaun to create the multi-coloured stripe effect with a specialist bright green protective steel mesh ‘cage’.The SolutionTrumpington Pavilion employs an unusual multi-coloured exterior treatment. An artist specialing in the technique has dribbled green, blue, red and yellow randomly onto a corrugated plastic sandwich sheet, which is then covered with Zaun’s Duo8 mesh in bright green, fixed to coloured timber battens. The pavilion includes a main building with a hall, youth room, kitchen, toilets, office and inter-connected changing rooms for two teams plus an officials’ room. The doors to the changing rooms are in boldly contrasting colours. At the same time, an eight-metre green mesh electric sliding gate protects the building but opens to provide unrestricted access to the patio and the King George V Playing Fields beyond.Zaun installed the Diamond cantilever sliding gate with Duo8 mesh in-fill, KeyFob and internally mounted switchto ensure both the safety of all users of the pavilion when the gates are operated especially children, and the security of the contents when the pavilion is not in use.The original pavilion, built in the early 1950s, was about half the size of the new main building, including a small hall and changing rooms.
