Silva Timber Supplies Western Red Cedar Cladding for Tesco Widnes Superstore

Silva Timber Supplies Western Red Cedar Cladding for Tesco Widnes Superstore

Silva Timber

Silva Timber, one of the UK's leading importers of speciality timber products, has recently supplied over 1100 square metres of Western Red Cedar Cladding for the new Tesco Extra Superstore development on Lugsdale Road, Widnes, Cheshire. Gordon White & Hood architects used the material extensively on three elevations in order to create a landmark which provides a gateway feature to this prominent location. The Tesco Extra Superstore in Widnes is a distinctive building that uses timber cladding in an innovative manner. When specifying exterior cladding, architects need to consider a number of performance criteria such as durability and stability, along with the resulting aesthetics."In order to create an impact, we needed material that would be robust, able to withstand the elements and at the same time provided natural beauty and warmth that would reflect and provide an extension of the surrounding environment."Jon Sayers, Architect at Gordon White & HoodWestern Red Cedar Select Clear (85/15) was the ideal solution for this project. Sourced from the coastal region of British Columbia, where growing conditions ensure a tighter grain and rich colour compared to forests further in-land, it is an aesthetically appealing material that allows architects and designers to develop eye-catching, cutting edge solutions. The beauty of the Western Red Cedar is in its appearance and warm colour tones; the inherent small variations between boards (given its organic origins) create a visually striking surface.Nick Taylor, Managing Director at Silva Timber explains further why their product is popular in the retail sector: “Western Red Cedar can be used not only to clad the entire exterior of a building but also to accentuate elements when combined with other materials. The combination of timber and glass at this Tesco Extra Superstore creates elegant, clean lines that emphasise the contemporary design and give the building a light and fresh feel. We believe our particular grade of Western Red Cedar is the finest quality in the UK, which is evident from the results achieved in this project."To protect the timber and enhance the appearance of the building, Silva Timber pre-finished the Western Red Cedar with three coats of a semi-transparent water based stain. Factory coating ensures the wood is finished on all sides in optimal conditions, as recommended by the Western Red Cedar Lumber Association (WRCLA). Pre-finishing the material keeps its natural, beautiful colour tones for longer and at the same time reduces installation time and labour cost.Highly durable, with low shrinkage factor, naturally resistant to decay and easy to work with, Western Red Cedar is widely considered to be the ultimate natural cladding material. Low density and a high proportion of air spaces make it the best thermal insulator among common softwood species. The use of cedar as a cladding material on modern buildings provides not only an environmentally friendly solution but also one that is attractive, durable and long lasting.Silva Timber’s Western Red Cedar is sourced from the well-managed forests of British Columbia, Canada and comes with full PEFC Chain of Custody Certification. Silva Timber only uses suppliers who conform to the strictest environmental standards, sourcing timber harvested legally and sustainably from independently certified forests. The use of Western Red Cedar at Tesco Extra Superstore, Widnes creates a warm and friendly welcome, providing the store's customers with a better shopping experience; a part of Tesco's 'Better Stores, Better Service' initiative. Opened in 2012, Tesco Widnes has also been part of the Tesco Regeneration Partnerships scheme aimed at revitalising the community.

Flimwell Park - NORclad Lite treated British Larch, EuroClass B Fire Treatment - Timber Cladding

NORclad Limited

NORclad have been supplying the timber cladding on this project over the past couple of years, a mixture of Tongue and Groove boards, feature fins, and open rainscreen profile.Areas for accommodation and high footfall required to also receive EuroClass B fire treatment.A HomeGrown Larch was selected for this project, having a fair spread of knots and character to be in keeping with its surrounding, a great example of selecting a suitable timber species that fits. Potentially if a timber with a lower knot content, or less defined grain would not have worked as well as this, in these natural surroundings. With English Grown Larch only being classified as slightly/ moderately durable by TRADA, the decision was made to use a high pressure treatment on all of the timber supplied for this project. NORclad Lite preservative treatment was selected, which allows the timber to naturally weather down to the silver grey as you’d expect from timber after being exposed to UV light, the treatment also offers a 30 year warranty against rot & insect attack.
NORclad Black Painted Thermowood Timber Cladding

NORclad Black Painted Thermowood Timber Cladding

NORclad Limited

NORclad supplied nearly 7,000/LM of pre-coated Thermowood across this contemporary project in Berkhamsted.Thermowood is a great timber when it comes to applying a coating, after going through the heat treating process, the Finnish grown European Redwood/Whitewood (Scandinavian Pine/Spruce) is more stable. It is suitable in conditions of changing humidity, and its thermal insulation properties are improved, ideal for use in exposed areas such as External Timber Cladding. The heat treatment process enables the use of Scandinavian Redwood in areas requiring a service life of up to 30 years without the need for any further preservative or coating to be applied. The process removes resin from timber, as a result there is no resin leakage or “bleed” through the surface coatings. The effect of this together with the improved stability can lead to a lower maintenance requirement, combined with the application of the Sansin SDF system, which will further protect the outside of wood. The SDF product also protects the inside by allowing the timber to ‘breath’ – helping to prevent moisture from getting trapped in the wood and causing rot.

Western Red Cedar Select Knotty Board on Board Style Cladding for School Hall Exterior

Western Red Cedar Select Knotty Board on Board Style Cladding for School Hall Exterior

Silva Timber

Western Red Cedar’s natural durability often makes this wood species first choice for external cladding, and this was no different for Leven Valley Primary School. As part of a refurbishment programme, the school wanted to update its hall, which was originally constructed as a temporary building in 1929. The hall desperately needed some attention to bring it up to modern standards as the windows were all single pane glass, and there was no insulation in the timber frame, making it hot in the summer and cold in the winter.Rather than demolish the building and start from scratch, the school decided to work with the existing frame and update the materials to make the building fit for use.Leven Valley Primary School is located in the Lake District National Park, surrounded by beautiful woodland so the building had to use natural materials that blended into the landscape. The main concern for the school was the lack of insulation in the building. New double-glazed windows and sheep's wool was used to insulate the building. An additional layer of insulation came from the Western Red Cedar 'board-on-board' style cladding. Wood, in general, has a low thermal conductivity, but the low density of cedar makes it one of the best thermal insulators of any wood species.Western Red Cedar was chosen as the cladding material, not only because of its beautiful natural appearance, but also its proven ability to perform in damp environments. As the Lake District experiences more rainfall than any other part of England, this was an important consideration.Leven Valley Primary School wanted to let the cedar age naturally to a silver grey but understood the importance of protecting the wood from moisture. It was decided to protect the cedar cladding with Sansin WoodForce Clear which was factory applied by Silva Timber prior to delivery.Sansin WoodForce Clear is a water-borne penetrating sealer with very low volatile organic compounds (VOCs) that works by repelling water whilst allowing the wood to breathe. Wood protected with Sansin WoodForce Clear doesn’t hold excess moisture, so it is far less prone to water staining, mould and algae growth and turning black. As it’s invisible the wood looks totally natural and because it contains no pigments, WoodForce Clear allows the wood to weather gradually to a consistent silver grey colour.Leven Valley Primary School focused on sourcing natural, environmentally friendly materials for the build as they felt this would create a better learning environment and highlight the importance of sustainability. Timber is the most environmentally friendly building material as it is a carbon sink and it's renewable. The Western Red Cedar used in this project was PEFC certified showing it was sourced from a responsibly managed forest.Even the product used to protect the wood is an environmentally friendly choice. Sansin WoodForce Clear contains less than 5 grams per litre of VOCs (the EU regulatory limit is 130 grams per litre), making it one of the most eco-friendly wood protection products on the market. VOCs contribute to atmospheric pollution, so using products like this helps create a healthier environment. An inspection 12 months after installation showed that the Western Red Cedar cladding and Sansin WoodForce Clear were performing perfectly together. In an area with high rainfall and large trees surrounding the building creating a damp environment, there were no water stains, black marks or mould growth and the cladding is mellowing steadily to a pleasing silver grey colour.
Seaside Town Benefits From £2.6m Renovation Featuring ThermoWood Pine Cladding

Seaside Town Benefits From £2.6m Renovation Featuring ThermoWood Pine Cladding

Silva Timber

Summer 2021 saw the completion of a £2.6million development at 23-25 Tontine Street in the heart of Folkestone’s Old Town. It was part of a project which started in March 2018 with the latest phase combining the renovation of an existing building and the demolition of another structure to make way for five stunning residential properties and four commercial units. The Roger De Haan Charitable Trust, working with Creative Folkestone, commissioned the work and appointed architects, Neat, to head up the design. The Trust wanted to support creative industries, providing affordable, environmentally sustainable, and innovative spaces for homes and businesses alike.Neat set out to dramatically improve the appearance of the site whilst setting a new standard in environmentally sustainable ‘eco-friendly’ design. By removing the two-storey extension that was previously added to the rear of 23-25 Tontine Street, pedestrian access to the recently regenerated Payers Park was reinstated. Furthermore, the new buildings were arranged in such a manner that they create new areas of public realm. It is hoped that this approach will encourage other buildings around Payers Park to respond favourably to the urban space. In designing the new buildings, Neat opted for a timber-framed construction to minimise the embodied energy. The timber frame facilitated a degree of off-site fabrication. The exterior of the buildings is clad in a combination of Silva’s ThermoWood and Siberian Larch boards, with Neat opting for a range of bespoke sizes to add a point of differentiation. Selected buildings were fire retardant treated to Euroclass B standards whilst others were finished in a charcoal colour using Silva’s factory coating service.Neat’s design proposals also incorporated work from international artist Jacqueline Poncelet, with her ‘Shimmera’ artwork integrated into the two new dwellings. Projecting sections of timber added an extra dimension to the already stunning façade, providing that all-important privacy, whilst perfectly showcasing Jacqueline’s artistic flair.Silva’s Senior Sales Advisor, Michael Allen, who was the technical lead on the project said, “By opting for a combination of ThermoWood and SILVALarch cladding Neat was able to establish a unique way of differentiating the appearance of the buildings over and above merging factory coated boards with those in their natural form. Neat has perfected this blended approach with the build at 23-25 Tontine Street resulting in an eye-catching series of contemporary mixed-use properties”.Silva’s ThermoWood cladding is available in rainscreen, v-joint, and channel profiles with boards and corner detailing completing the product offering.ThermoWood cladding undergoes a thermal modification process which makes the wood durable, dimensionally stable, and resin-free. Applying a coating enhances the longevity of the cladding meaning a service life of up to 60 years is achievable when properly maintained.
Factory Coated Western Red Cedar Bevel Featheredge Cladding Specified for Retirement Village Development

Factory Coated Western Red Cedar Bevel Featheredge Cladding Specified for Retirement Village Development

Silva Timber

Set in 32 acres of natural woodland, open meadows, and ornamental lakes, close to Romsey in Hampshire, sits the impressive Audley Stanbridge Earls retirement village. It is home to 155 cottages and apartments which nestle alongside a Grade II* Tudor Manor house.Stanbridge Earls offers those in their later years of life the chance to have an independent lifestyle in a luxurious and secure setting. Some may even argue that the standard of living at the village is more akin to a 5-star hotel with facilities such as a health club, library, restaurant, bar, and beauty treatment rooms to name but a few.The main house at Stanbridge Earls has an impressive history dating back to Saxon royalty and was formerly an independent boarding school. Today the manor house remains at the heart of the retirement village, having been sympathetically restored to its former glory. But the luxurious standards do not end there. Each of the one, two, and three-bedroom, houses, cottages, and apartments, has been lovingly designed, built, and furnished to the highest specifications. The exterior of the building combines a modern, brick-built structure with a stunning facade of Western Red Cedar cladding, creating a functional, yet aesthetically pleasing design.Silva’s Western Red Cedar Select Knotty Bevel Featheredge cladding was specified for the build. Canadian cedar has natural durability and excellent dimensional stability, providing decades of trouble-free service. This sustainably sourced timber comes with PEFC certification and has a lightly textured finish making it the ideal choice for factory coating. When selecting the colour palette for the new builds, The Audley Group was keen to explore the options available in the Sansin range. With 5 colour tones (Natural, Translucent, Saturated, Ultra-Saturate, and Sold-Hide) and over 120 shades to select from, the choice was endless. The final selection saw The Audley Group opt for two contrasting tones: Java from the naturals range and Carbon Grey from the solid hide offering. Colours in the Natural range define and enhance the character of the wood whilst the Solid Hide range combines beautiful colour, texture, and exceptional performance characteristics. The results are simply stunning and so it’s no surprise that the Stanbridge Earls development won silver medal for Best Retirement Development in the 2020 WhatHouse Awards and a HAPPI award at the 2020 Housing Design Awards.
Thermowood® Pine Cladding Fits the Bill for New Medical Centre

Thermowood® Pine Cladding Fits the Bill for New Medical Centre

Silva Timber

ThermoWood® is an attractive, sustainable solid wood material produced using a chemical-free natural process involving heat and steam. It’s the ideal choice for large scale commercial projects as the thermal modification process makes it durable, dimensionally stable, and resin-free. It has been a long time coming, but Chapelford Medical Centre has finally opened the doors to its new £2.7 million state-of-the-art facility in Warrington. For more than a decade, Chapelford Medical Centre has operated out of a portable unit on Burtonwood Road. Thanks to investment by NHS England in partnership with NHS Property Services, however, the people of West Warrington now have access to a brand new eco-friendly primary health care facility.Providing services to approximately 6,800 patients, the new centre features eight treatment rooms, an onsite pharmacy, and improved car parking facilities. The medical centre offers an environmentally friendly and energy-efficient design, combining Silva’s ThermoWood Channel Cladding with a contemporary glazed finish to the main entrance. To increase the performance and longevity of the wood, the ThermoWood cladding for Chapelford Medical Centre was factory coated in Driftwood, part of the naturals range of Sansin SDF finishes. Factory coating timber has many benefits over site applied finish. Primarily, it ensures the coating is applied correctly, resulting in deep penetration and superior adhesion. When all sides of the board are protected, they become more dimensionally stable, and therefore, more resistant to warping, checking, and splitting. Add to that the time saved in hand finishing on-site, and the potential delays due to adverse weather conditions, and the benefits of factory coating speak for themselves.

Technowood UK

Aluminium and real timber claddingThe best aluminium cladding for your private home, extension, renovation is Technowood ® cladding. It is faster than most cladding systems to install and has been available for almost 30 years. Tried, tested, analyzed and put through its paces in some of the toughest weather locations Technowood has proved itself a worthy product. How does Timber cladding weatherThere are many solid timbers used as conventional cladding, the main complaint being that the weathering is inconsistent. The colours fade at different rates which may look unsightly.UV light damages wood because it breaks down the wood’s lignin. Lignin is a component of wood that strengthens the cell walls and holds the fibres together. This process is called photo-oxidation.Technowood doesn’t suffer in the same way. This is because the manufacturing process of the veneer and the resins used to replace the lignin; thus negating the short comings of normal timber. You can’t really stop natural timber from weathering. However, with Technowood you can be assured of consistency. How to avoid water staining on claddingAvoiding water stains on timber cladding is something of a myth. Unless you maintain your cladding almost weekly there will always be indications of water staining. It is a product exposed to the elements and as such will be at least damp for most of the year; therefore will show water staining.Completed in 2012 this project is in Samsun, turkey. Receives full exposure from the sun and heavy rain (don’t think it doesn’t rain in Turkey as it does, it snows too). This project called for Technowood because it would keep the natural colour of the timber for much longer compared to normal timber cladding. Can normal timber cladding be warrantied?Under normal circumstances, you can’t warranty normal timber; unless it has gone through pressure treating or surface treatment that has such a warranty. These warranties are not ambiguous so long as the treatment process is followed to the letter of instruction.“The warranty for Technowood products is 20 years”.Salt Spray TestingSalt spray testing, a practice of checking the corrosion resistance of the surface of materials that have a coating. During salt spray testing, an accelerated corrosive attack is produced in order to measure the performance. This demonstrates how well the coating protects the metal. “Salt spray test has been done to our veneered material by IFT Rosenheim Germany and its succeeded.” Technowood aluminium and timber veneer claddingThe products available from Technowood are in standard width dimensions from 100mm, 150mm and 200mm. They look like real wood because it’s a real wood veneer. The product has very little to no maintenance; It also carries Fire Rating A2. The Cedar Club Uses Western Red Cedar Externally and Internally

The Cedar Club Uses Western Red Cedar Externally and Internally

Silva Timber

Lane End Conference Centre recently completed their brand new purpose built leisure centre in High Wycombe. The double storey sports and leisure centre was designed by Brocklehurst Architects and project managed by the Conference Centre themselves. Mark Lishman explains their brief…"We wanted a building that was in keeping with its natural surroundings. You can find various cedar trees in the surrounding area. The original building that was replaced was also clad in Western Red Cedar that had stood for a very long time. For these reasons, our decision to use Western Red Cedar cladding on the exterior came very early on during the initial consultation with the Architects."Mark Lishman, Deputy Manager and Head of Facilities at Lane End Conference CentreThe sports and leisure centre was very appropriately named “The Cedar Club”. Although he worked with timber for several years, Mark had never sourced Western Red Cedar, so he contacted Silva Timber to find the right Western Red Cedar product for the building. After receiving various samples and discussing his options with the customer service team, it was decided that Western Red Cedar Select Clear (85/15) Channel cladding was the best option.Silva's Select Clear (85/15) grade is sourced directly from the world’s most reputable primary sawmills, which means it far exceeds the standard grading rules for this product. The Channel profile is particularly ideal for modern and contemporary designs. The channel is discreet and creates a very crisp yet visually interesting shadow line. The superior quality and consistency of this product is especially striking when seen on projects of this scale. Mark Lishman continues…"The quality of the Western Red Cedar that we received was above my expectations. The natural colour stood out straight away, and the quality of the machine finish was excellent!"In keeping with the theme of “cedar”, the interior of the building was linked to the exterior using a clever feature wall made out of Western Red Cedar offcuts. This wall (seen below) has proved extremely popular with visitors and interior designers alike.
