Hising Bridge - plank gratings

Elefant Gratings T/A PcP Gratings Ltd

The Hising Bridge is to become the new landmark of Gothenburg. Spanning over the central part of Scandinavia’s most significant commercial harbour, The Hissing Bridge will replace the existing Göta River Bridge from 1939.Aesthetically, the Hising bridge will become ‘a street’ within the city, for people to walk on and below and, to enjoy spectacular views. The Hising bridge will bind the Göta River shores for cars, busses, trams, pedestrians, and bicycles. The Hising Bridge project involves many partners, entrepreneurs, and subcontractors. PcP was involved in the project to design and supply safety solutions for access walkways, platforms, stairs, and architectural ceilings. The new bridge is approximately 440 metres long.Project criteriaThe construction work for the Hising Bridge began in 2013 and will replace the old worn-out bridge from 1939. The project involves a range of highly experienced partners within construction and infrastructure: Trafikværket and Skanska, to name a few. The project prescribed stainless steel gratings to decorate the bridge with an architectural ceiling that would blend into the atmosphere and surroundings. The purpose is to give people an unforgettable experience of the architecture and the bridge lights during the day and on a “special” night. The criteria for the ceiling of stainless-steel gratings were prescribed in the project to fulfil an aesthetic design as a ceiling and at the same time provide a functional safety platform for maintenance workers.Additionally, the project had prescribed the need for safe access walkways, stairs, and service platforms to ensure maximum safety for workers on the entire bridge.SolutionThe project partners chose PcP to provide the complete solution: ceiling, stairs, walkways, and service platforms. The different applications involved close collaboration between the partners throughout design, development, test and delivery. The range of applications was a thorough process of designing, drawing and technical advice. The entire solution involved PcP products from OPTIMO, CUBE and Guardrail.CUBE® as architectural ceiling1000 m2 CUBE® gratings decorate the ceiling below the bridge with a multifunctional purpose combining design and functionality. The unique design is simplistic and efficient and provides excellent light penetration at night.

Quality Assurance Laboratory for a Pharmaceutical Blue Chip Client

Quality Assurance Laboratory for a Pharmaceutical Blue Chip Client

Norwood Group Limited

PROJECT OVERVIEWWorking with BES, we have successfully completed a refurbishment of an existing space into new quality assurance (QA) laboratory for a pharmaceutical blue-chip client. The fundamental requirement was to deliver a purpose- designed laboratory, located at the heart of the client’s busy manufacturing site, to run robust microbiological analytical activities for the next 25 years.SCOPE OF WORKTo meet the project requirements, we utilised several products, including 100mm Mediline partitions, metal pan ceilings, walk-on ceilings and various types of doors. Our in-house team became involved at an early stage of the design process. Working closely with the main contractor and end-users, we were able to recommend different products which would benefit the client’s processes and flow of the building. One of the key solutions we offered was Norwood’s automatic hermetically sealing sliding door system with large vision panels. This specifically designed doors not only saved space but also provided users with an open feel of the facility. It is due to this project that Norwood became a member of the Automatic Door Suppliers Association – (ADSA). Not many companies hold an ADSA membership and being associated with ADSA promotes the highest standards in automatic doors and gives Norwood operatives the qualification for certifying their own automatic doors to BS 7036: 1988. We delivered a modern and energy efficient facility, compliant with Good Laboratory Practice (GLP) requirements, within a controlled budget. The laboratory was finished to the highest standards, with a great attention to detail throughout. This project demonstrates that by involving Norwood at the early design stages, we can add real value, advising on the most suitable solutions, tailored to the specific needs of our clients.

A new paradigm of beauty and functionality: Atlas Concorde's concrete-effect porcelain tiles decorate the exterior floors of a luxurious private villa. In a refined residence on the outskirts of Memphis, the spacious, bright spaces boast the traits of an exclusive designer identity based on a perfect balance between technical performance and aesthetic research. Capable of ennobling the surrounding environment thanks to their value and uniqueness, Atlas Concorde concrete-look tiles were chosen to furnish outdoor paving and the edges of the outdoor swimming pool. An expression of an original urban chic style, the ceramic surface selected for the outdoor spaces is enhanced by textures featuring a blend of the warm shades of oxidation and the cooler hues typical of concrete. In a setting where harmony reigns, the ceramic material stands out not only for its marked personality, but also for the characteristics of safety and reliability necessary when designing outdoor environments. In fact, the large garden of the American residence features concrete-look porcelain tiles in the large 120x120 cm grip format with a 2 cm thickness specific for outdoor pavers: a guaranteed non-slip – and therefore safe – surface. The light colour also makes them ideal for outdoor paving where people walk barefoot during the summer: by absorbing little external heat, the surface is less warm to the touch. The permanence of the ceramic material and the simplicity of cleaning ensure a refined, pleasant external environment over time. With a variety of effects and textures, Atlas Concorde's large format tiles satisfy a wide range of tastes and trends, interpreting the diversity of their original materials and transforming them into an authentic visual and tactile experience that can enhance any project.

The Sigmund Freud Lecture Theatre at the institute of Psychoanalysis in Maida Vale was being refurbished. It was clear the upgrade should include acoustic correction. The reverb in the main lecture theatre was high and many lecturers and attendees had commented on how bad the acoustics were. As they were now going to use the room for recording and remote learning it was crucially important to get the acoustics issue remedied. The lecture theatre was in a historically important building and the IoP wanted to keep the ceiling exposed.TK-Team conducted a site visit and proposed circular ceiling hung 800mm baffles to cover 50% of the space. Baffles were equally spaced and kept above the lighting level so as not to create and shadows.Every body was happy with the outcome, corrected acoustics and the original detail of the ceiling was seen in all it`s glory.

Hush Acoustics

The developer of an apartment conversion scheme in the Pennine hills village of Diggle near Oldham wanted to achieve superior sound reduction standards in the walls and floors and go beyond the minimum requirements set out by the Building Regulations. The Old Mill House project involved transforming a Victorian industrial building into several residential dwellings. The project’s design needed to comply with the requirements of Approved Document E, which sets out minimum standards in England and Wales for airborne and impact sound transmission between dwellings where there is a Material Change of Use.However, to deliver the highest quality living accommodation to potential buyers, the developer insisted that the acoustic specification not only met the minimum standards but went beyond them.To achieve their goals for the floors and walls, they approached Hush Acoustics for assistance in developing the specifications and providing the required products.Given the unique nature of the properties being created, the acoustic design for the flooring had to be compatible with underfloor heating and more unusual floor finishes such as stone tiling. The specification developed by Hush Acoustics for the separating floors beneath the floorcoverings featured a plywood timber deck, below which was the underfloor heating system and 8mm Hush FFR resilient underlay. For the ceiling side, Hush recommended standard acoustic insulation for use within the timber joists, two layers of 15mm Fireline plasterboard attached to the underside of the joists, the Hush MF Ceiling System to allow Hush Slab 100 to be fitted in the void created, finished with a layer of 15mm Soundbloc plasterboard. For the separating walls, two specifications were developed according to the types of walls. In areas where there was an existing masonry wall, a wall lining consisting of independent stud work, Hush Slab insulation and Soundbloc plasterboard was developed. In other areas of the scheme, a twin timber stud wall is recommended, again featuring Hush Slab insulation and Soundbloc plasterboard. As part of the process, the Hush Acoustics team undertook many site visits and guided the design and build process to ensure the correct installation was followed, and pre-completion testing was also arranged. The solutions developed and provided by Hush Acoustics fully met the developer’s goals to go beyond Approved Document E’s compliance standards according to the pre-completion tests.

Pontypridd riverside scheme showcases Rockfon to the power of three

Rockfon

Forming an important part of a £200m redevelopment, the flagship three building Llys Cadwyn (Chain Court) mixed-use riverside development encompasses office and retail units alongside a state-of-the-art library, café, leisure fitness and community facilities in the heart of Pontypridd. Owner client, Rhondda Cynon Taff County Borough Council, awarded the design of this eye-catching project to Darnton B3 Architects, who have worked with Willmott Dixon since 2018, to bring the innovative, ambitious £38m scheme to fruition. Around 9500m2 of Rockfon acoustic ceiling and wall systems are installed throughout the three building scheme to add a wow factor and help create healthy interiors where people can work, visit, study, socialise and relax. Architecture that looks and feels good The facades of two of the buildings are glazed, with those facing the riverside designed with sun-deflecting vertical fins in a mix of warm primary colours from yellow through to orange and red – adding a positive, contemporary accent. The third building sits in contrast to the others with its organic, aardvark curved outer shell clad completely in shimmering zinc tiles, reminiscent of the futuristic Bullring in Birmingham and the Guggenheim in Bilbao. The twin buildings required high levels of sound absorption due to the predominantly open-plan office interiors on their upper floors. Independent research shows that stress levels are reduced by 27% and focus is increased by 48% by improved acoustics in these environments. The high light reflectance offered by our ceiling systems optimises natural light, aiding wellbeing and helping provide the best working conditions whilst minimising energy usage and costs. Ensuring the desired Shhh In the Library, sound control was an obvious specification requirement. Happily, Rockfon ranges - including Rockfon® Universal™ Baffles - offer acoustic performance which deliver the desired Shh. Elsewhere in the café, gym and community spaces, our products are tough enough to deal with the impact of heavy use. Darnton B3 Project Architect, Martin Hurley, “I met with our client to discuss the acoustics in a large atria which sits between the children’s, and general reference libraries. We agreed to create a feature art wall using a selection of colours influenced by the council’s own corporate identity. The completed design works really well, delivering the visual impact and sound control we desired. Rockfon Eclipse® wall panels were used to create the stylish art wall, featuring dark greys, purples, turquoise, teal, lime and orange which were NCS-matched. Eclipse can be specified in a variety of shaped formats with a clean minimalistic A-edge and unlimited custom colour matching. Quick and easy to install, the fixing kit allows panels to be set at varying distances from the wall to enhance creative possibilities. Delivering the dream Tonypandy-based M&P Group, were responsible for the installation. The firm’s Andrew Pearce commented, “Co-ordinating the process of installation across three buildings within a tight, riverside, city-centre site presented particular challenges. A guiding requirement was to achieve the least visible grid, using a selection of Rockfon ranges to create aesthetically pleasing results with high levels of sound absorption. In addition to the Eclipse feature wall, versatile, technologically advanced Rockfon Blanka® was installed throughout the three buildings, with specialised Blanka Bas utilised in meeting rooms to promote speech intelligibility. Rockfon® Koral™ was used exclusively within washrooms and lobbies.” The Rockfon Blanka range offers a wide choice of alternatives for installation and usage. All embody Class A sound absorption (aw 1.00), 87% light reflection and >99% light diffusion and room to room sound Insulation >26dB. Blanka’s easy clean, anti-static surface prolongs product life and is non-directional, which speeds up installation, saving time and money. Within the futuristic building, an arrangement of elegant, circular, Rockfon Eclipse islands, in white, are hung from ceiling wires, creating the illusion they are floating in mid-air. In common with other Rockfon ranges, Rockfon Koral offers excellent sound absorption and the highest fire safety characteristics. It is easy to clean with a vacuum or a damp cloth and is available in semi-concealed and visible grid options.
