Sika's full suit of products helped with waterproofing the scalloped roof at the campus. A combination of Sike Sarnafils waterproof Single Ply membrane, as a flexible and robust membrane, and Sikalastic- 621, as a highly-durable elastic liquid polyurethane system, was used.
As well as the roof refurbishment, concrete repairs were also carried out with the use of Sika MonoTop-615 and Sikagard - 550. For the steel reinforcement Sika FerroGard-903 was also used.
The refurbishment of the buliding was a great project for Sika to work on as it had solutions for each aspect of the project.

The new Leeds Arena was a £60m project by Leeds Council to create a striking new stadium, which has been crowned with a 7,500sq m Sika Sarnafil single ply roofing system, installed by experienced contractor Lakesmere.
The fact that Sika Sarnafil was the first roofing manufacturer to be BIM
ready played a huge part in the specification, and in turn improved the ability to review designs and rationalise ideas, whilst cost saving using BIM was highlighted through material specifications and design coordination.

The Joseph Black Building, found in the King’s Buildings Campus at the University of Edinburgh, houses the School of Chemistry and is one of the oldest buildings on the campus. But its existing copper roof covering had come to the end of its natural life.

Sika Sarnafil Membrane S327-15EL in Patina Green was chosen to replace the old roof covering, as the local authority planning department advised that this product was an acceptable replacement for the original copper roofs on the listed building.

Constructed in 1969, Lancaster University’s iconic chaplaincy centre is one of the first buildings that come into view when arriving on campus and amongst the university’s most architecturally distinctive. It features three circular roofs which rise in the centre of the building to create a three-pronged spire.
The building has become an instantly recognisable visual symbol since being used as the basis for the university’s logo in 1989. The recent roof refurbishment project, delivered using Sika Liquid Plastics’ Decothane Ultra system, received the Liquid Roofing Project of the Year under 1000m2 at the LRWA Awards 2017.

The £11.6 million regeneration scheme in Aylesbury saw a former MoD site managed by the Homes and Communities Agency (HCA) transformed into an affordable and sustainable housing development, comprising 94 terraced houses and apartment blocks forming a continuous curved building. Named ‘The Serpentine’, this snaking housing project called for a flexible roofing solution! Sika Sarnafil single ply was specified for its flexibility and suitability to tricky detailing but the shape posed a number of technical challenges.

Financed by county council capital funds, Northamptonshire County Council undertook a multi-million pound remedial works programme on a number of schools originally built in the 1960’s and 1970’s. All of the buildings were suffering from some degree of water ingress, and the roofs needed to be brought in line with current building regulations for improved thermal performance. Sika Sarnafil’s specialist roofing contractors installed over 50,000m2 in light and lead grey of G410-18EL single ply membrane to the school roofs.

Comprising 36 contemporary beachfront properties, the luxury development, completed features unobstructed views of the Atlantic.
To withstand the South coast’s often extreme wind and rain, while matching the luxury aesthetic of the build a robust but aesthic solution was needed.
Sika Sarnafil’s single ply membrane was specified as the solution and to also ensure a high-quality and cost-effective finish was provided.
Aberdeen Railway Station, Scotland

Aberdeen Railway Station is the UK’s busiest station north of Edinburgh and Glasgow and is listed is listed as ‘Category A’ by Historic Environment Scotland. The station building has a glazed canopy roof, which needed a full upgrade. In 2010, Protech where approached by The Clegg Group for a renovation project of an eight storey 1930’s building.Originally known as Shaftesbury House, the building was opened in 1938 to house migrant workers in Leeds that had previously been living in appalling conditions. The development had deteriorated and was eventually closed and boarded up in 1998. As part of a regeneration programme of the area, Leeds City Council co ordinated the redevelopment of the site into what is now known as Greenhouse, a mixed-use block of eco-flats. Celebrating its 50th anniversary in 2019, the iconic Bell’s Sports Centre in Perth, one of Scotland’s largest sports facilities, needed a new roof to protect the important building. With the previous roof membrane nearing 30 years old and in a state of disrepair due to the challenging Scottish weather, the centre needed a long-term and robust roofing solution.Planned by Perth and Kinross Council’s arms-length body Live Active Leisure, the £700,000 project also aimed to improve insulation and ventilation in order to enhance the venue’s environmental performance and efficiency. In July 2021, construction began on 242 new homes on land to the east of Coldean Lane, Brighton, bringing new affordable options to the area.A mix of one-, two- and three-bedroom flats in six blocks of five to seven storeys were detailed as part of the plans and made best use of the sloping 3.3-hectare site in which the development was to be situated.PMC Construction were contracted to undertake the works and through the project’s architects, HGP Architects, Sika was called upon to provide a waterproofing solution for the flats.

Christ Church URC in Chelmsford, Essex provides a hub for the whole community, hosting mother and toddler groups, social meetings and youth based events as well as traditional religious services. The church’s brick-clad structure includes exposed concrete columns which were showing signs of deterioration due to carbonation together with other factors causing the steel reinforcement to corrode and the surface to crack and spall, leaving the reinforcement bar exposed in areas.Sika supplied the long-term concrete repair and protection solution for a church façade which had displayed signs of deterioration due to long-term exposure to air pollutants.

DECOTHANE IS EFFECTIVE MEDICINE FOR WEST SUFFOLK HOSPITAL ROOF

Suffolk Hospital to renew the waterproofing membrane on multiple areas of the
hospital campus and create a gradual pitch to aid drainage while enhancing the
building’s thermal performance.
Delivered by specialist contractor, Allard Construction, the phase four
programme included seven sections of the building in a 20 week programme.
The seven areas that needed work were all under heavy coverage of mechanical
plant and pipework, and consequently there were large areas of restricted
access, these issues made Sika Liquid Plastics the perfect choice for the project

A previous client of Renderseal Ltd – who had works undertaken on his home in Hampstead in 2013 – requested help recently with further works at the same property.Due to a defective external drain problem, water ingress had occurred in the client’s rear bedroom in addition to damp staining and paint blistering in the side entrance hall.Familiar with Renderseal Ltd’s expertise, the homeowner returned to the waterproofing specialist for help. Providing its services throughout London and the Home Counties, Renderseal Ltd’s plan was to install a Sika waterproofing system that would combat the issues created by the home’s defective drain.
Gatwick Station Platforms 5-7 Upgrades

The UK’s second busiest airport, Gatwick Airport, is also home to a rail station which handles in excess of 20 million passengers annually – making it one of the 10 busiest stations in the UK outside of London.Network Rail are currently managing a redevelopment project at Gatwick station, which is being delivered by Costain. Part of this project is a new concourse for the station.The redevelopment of the station includes improvement works to create a larger, more accessible interchange between the station and airport. As part of the upgrades to platforms 5-7, Costain worked with Sika waterproofing products and Hanson for the concrete mix to ensure the rebuild was robust and would offer significant longevity.
