External Goods Lift

External Goods Lift

Penny Hydraulics Ltd

It can be difficult to find a lift that will operate outside without providing complete shelter from the elements. Full enclosures can have a significant impact on the building appearance and there may also be space constraints in lightwell situations. Penny Hydraulics Ltd uses design automation to quickly produce layouts based on its modular lift systems that can be adapted for external installation. The company has been manufacturing lifts in the UK for over 30 years and so has much experience to help find solutions that it knows will work well for the end user. Blueprint Studios in Manchester were experiencing problems moving audio equipment up to the first floor recording studio safely. It would have been very costly to fit internally both in terms of cost and space so a Penny Hydraulics MezzLift was installed externally within a minimal black frame and polycarbonate clad shaft to satisfy Listed Buildings consent. This saved considerable building works whilst enabling the Studios to become safer and more efficient. If the change in level is below 1.5 metres then a Loading Bay Lift could have been used that has much less impact over a more traditional style lift.

Ibstock Telling

Working in collaboration with façade specialist Dane Architectural enabled the design to be developed towards a light weight facade solution that combines GRC fin shaped columns and feature beams fixed directly over areas of the curtain wall grid system at locations where insulated panels were present. This strategy had several advantages, in the first instance a weather tight structure was provided early on in the programme, whilst the GRC facade option provided a much lighter solution that provided significant savings in both cost and time. The access strategy, based on mast climber platforms adapted to include lifting beams, enabled glazing and GRC panels to be hoisted swiftly into position.

Lödige Industries

Resilient, flexible and reliable lift solutions enable logistics services in ZurichIn 2018, Welti-Furrer approached Lödige Industries to install three OLYMPUS heavy goods lifts at their newly build logistics facility in Dielsdorf near Zurich. Logistics service providers and transportation companies are two important service providers across the globe. They ensure that all goods are always reliably and safely in the right place at the right time. Welti-Furrer has been on the road since 1838. As one of the oldest transport companies, Welti-Furrer relies on over 180 years of experience and is therefore very familiar with the central challenges and requirements of lift solutions.Long-term advantages with resilient lift solutionsForklift drivers in logistics centres work highly efficient and at a fast pace. Therefore, it is not possible to completely avoid damage to the facility equipment. However, a large part of the damage can be avoided through intelligent planning of the lift solution. One of the main reasons why Welti-Furrer decided for lift solutions from Lödige Industries is the generic strong resilience of the OLYMPUS heavy goods lift.In addition, other aspects of the lift design were optimised in order to further increase the robustness of the lifts. The wall soffits in the prefabricated concrete shafts were intentionally built smaller than the clear cabin width, thus protecting the whole cabin floor from damage. The outer trays are offset inwards so that they are protected from damage by forklift trucks or similar.Flexible use thanks to integrated card reading systemNext to the resilience of the installed heavy goods lifts, the local service team from Lödige Industries ensures high reliability at any time.Furthermore, in order to maintain the highest flexibility standards, the installed OLYMPUS heavy goods lifts were equipped with an internal card reading system. Penny Hydraulics MezzLight Lift Supports Community Company

Penny Hydraulics Ltd

A not-for-profit community food business in Sheffield has been reflecting on its success over the past year and praising the support of an addition to the team that allowed them to meet overwhelming demand. Regather, in Highfield, has been established for over a decade and is a sustainable, worker-owned community benefit society, run with co-operative values. With the help of its 15 acre market garden, the team sells fruit and vegetable boxes made up of local produce, by local workers. The BriefAs demand for the fruit and veg boxes grew – space became a premium. Initially, a marquee was put up to extend space outside the building, but this was not a suitable long term solution.‘It came to a point where we either needed to move premises or look for other solutions to reconfigure the building’ says Gareth Roberts founder of Regather. ‘Due to the pandemic moving the business was not a viable option. After much consideration, we decided to repurpose the event space upstairs into another working area. The problem then was getting the 600 – 700kg of produce safely between floors’.The ChallengeRegather only had a very small area for a goods lift to be installed due to the main entrance and a staircase. Goods Lift Design Engineer Umar Lodhi was up to the task and created a MezzLift design that not only fits the space but does not block the entrance to the building when the doors were open. ‘Special thanks to Umar Lodhi, the designer who worked with us to make the lift fit within our restrictive space,’ says Gareth.Another challenge faced by both Regather and Penny Hydraulics was the installation of goods lift during the pandemic. Social distancing was adhered to and the lift was able to be installed on-time with little disruption. The SolutionThe MezzLight goods lift can safely move up to 250kg of goods between floors, providing Regather with the flexibility to reconfigure their workspace. This has helped the business to grow in line with the increased demand, without the need for downtime or the huge expense of moving. ‘I actually did some the prep work myself – within a week the lift was in and up and running, it has really helped to transform the business’ says Gareth.

The ESCORTA goods lift with attendant adds the wow factor in colour and comfort to the Pink Hippo self-storage facility in Reading, London.About the project and buildingThe self-storage industry continues to grow in the UK. Following the success of their self-storage facility in Leatherhead, Pink Hippo has decided to open a new facility in Reading. To enable maximum storage opportunities, the new building offers spaces on two levels.Pink Hippo realizing goods transport and matching corporate colourThe Pink Hippo storage facility provides self-storage spaces on two levels for several items that need to be stored temporary. Whether the scooter is to be stored over the winter, a longer stay abroad is planned or winter clothes need a place to “over-summer” – the self-storage market is evolving in the UK. To ensure that even bulky goods find a safe and reliable way into their storage boxes, a goods lift needed to be integrated. The lift is designed to carry up to 1,500 kg in storage items between two storage levels. Efficient and safe goods lifts optimize performance for a large online shopping retailer’s warehouse

Lödige Industries

Efficient and safe goods lifts optimize performance for a large online shopping retailer’s warehouseThe top online fashion retailer improves its productivity, efficiency and safety to meeting higher market demandsOnline orders for the fashion industry have significantly peaked over the last few years, making fashion retailers recognise the need to expand their warehouses. The international and rapidly growing fashion brand has opened a new warehouse in Litchfield to supply their multinational customers efficiently and on time. In 2021, Lödige Industries was contracted to design, manufacture, deliver and install one SHERPA and one ESCORTA goods lift for the new facility. Installation work of the goods lifts was accomplished in November 2021, while the rack system will be finished afterwards.Optimizing space and serving each mezzanine floor efficientlyDue to the increasing number of online orders, the international fashion retailer needed an efficient and space-saving lift solution. The client envisioned a multi-level storage solution, to fully utilise the available warehousing space.Lödige Industries in the UK decided to implement large goods lifts as a solution to access each floor. The free-standing SHERPA and ESCORTA goods lifts fully automate the transfer of goods across five and six floors and were easily integrated into the rack system. The two lifts have been configured specially to help the flow of goods in the building. They have been fitted to align with their vast increase in orders, facilitating their constant success globally. Overall, the cabin sizes of the goods lifts allow the customer to fit all their equipment in the shaft without any disturbances between different stops.Safety and security are key priorities for the customerSafety for employees in installation and operation of goods lifts is one of the key priorities for the fashion brand. Therefore, engineers from Lödige Industries installed the goods lifts in line with Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC. It contains guidelines to minimise any injury to the user or people close to the machine. It specifies the maximum gap in a guard and directives regarding the lift such as lift speeds for different applications, alongside many other guidelines. For the ESCORTA, Lödige Industries fitted a bumper rail to protect the emergency stop button from being damaged. Additionally, rumble strips were installed to prevent the trolley from moving and maintaining the smooth running of the lift. As a result, this reduces downtime of the goods lifts, the amount of call outs and allows them to be more cost efficient.Consistent site coordination to apply the best lift solution for the customerThe biggest challenge for the customer was the limited space available for the goods lifts. Consequently, the customer required a lift solution to fit between the steel building columns and respecting all other work and storage areas. This made the sizing of the lifts become complex. In close collaboration with the customer, the efficiency of the building was maximised by optimising both, general goods flow and use of space within the goods lifts areas. The constant coordination and communication between the customer and Lödige Industries allowed a precise location for the lifts within the space available.SolutionIn order to save space and meeting the available space restrictions, free standing goods lifts were attached to the rack system. The applied safety measurements reduce downtimes of the goods lifts, the amount of call outs and allows the customer to operate more cost efficient.Close collaboration between the go-to fashion brand and Lödige Industries enabled the customer to optimise goods flow while respecting all site specifications.

The project was to provide an existing system with the new solution that offers high slip resistance according to evaluation group R13/V10* and to make it processable for a series production. For the new work platform on the trailers, a high-quality standard was to be achieved. The task included strict criteria for using recyclable metal with a minimum of waste without compromising with quality. Furthermore, the platform solution needed to achieve a very high standard in terms of quality with an outstanding finish and dimensional accuracy. outstanding surface finish and dimensional accuracy. The solutionAluminium floors for tipper work platforms “From coil to finished product”Optimal production technology in combination with high-performance materials enables production "from the coil to finished product" in terms of reproducible quality / extremely high dimensional accuracy / a perfect surface finish and economical production. In cooperation with our customer and our suppliers in the field of material and surface protection, we have developed a solution that allows us to develop an aluminium floor for the working platform on our customer's tipper trailer, true to our motto of manufacturing "from the coil to finished product".Due to our production technology of a sequence of several processing steps on a production line, we were able to develop a new floor for the working platform on our customer's tipper trailer using surface profiling (PcP Safety Grating Type US), we were able to achieve the slip-resistance classification required by the customer and certification by the Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (IFA in Sankt Augustin) - according to evaluation group R13/V10. Furthermore, the tools and materials used have enabled the process accuracy and the processing speed to be optimized and improved to a large extent. In particular, the excellent cooperation with our material suppliers (special foils in order not to contaminate the tools with foil residues) enabled us to achieve a perfect surface finish as required by the customer. Further processing is therefore not necessary and minimizes operational ways and resources.Quality assurance of products and series productionDue to the process-guided production, only the slightest deviations from the specified dimensional and quality requirements are possible. These are monitored and documented by instructed personnel and employees trained in the area of quality at specified inspection intervals. In particular, the product test bench set up for this purpose enables our employees to carry out a comprehensive test on the component and immediately correct deviations in series production. The resultCustom made flooring meets the strictest safety criteria for tipper trailersDue to the partly optimized tool technologies and adapted or partly new procedures and processes, the requirements of our customer's specifications could be fulfilled to 100%. The requirements of the employers' liability insurance association and occupational health and safety could be achieved with a certification (IFA) according to slip resistance class R13/V10. This decisive requirement was accompanied by the demands for process-optimized series production while meeting the requirements for dimensional accuracy and perfect surface finish. As a result, we are confident that we can supply our customers with a product that lives up to their name and market position.
