Designer Ian Murray, owner of architectural practice I J Murray Associated Ltd, wouldn’t want to live anywhere else. When he and his wife Carole had the opportunity to buy a plot of land a stone’s throw from the beach, they immediately decided it would be the perfect place for their dream home. And if you are in the business, why not design and build it yourself?

The G8 Summit in Enniskillen of the world’s most powerful politicians involved 4,700 Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) officers and 3,600 from other UK forces in a security operation that cost about £60m.The PSNI wanted the securest G8 ever at a time of ‘severe terrorist threat’ and hoped that its reputation for dealing with public disorder plus unprecedented physical, cyber, technical and logistical protection would keep many potential protesters away.The SolutionPSNI approached Zaun to design, manufacture, project manage and install an ‘impregnable cordon’ around the world leaders to guarantee their security throughout the summit at Lough Erne.The rectangular site was protected on its long northeastern boundary by the Lough Erne lake. After extensive testing, Zaun designed its single largest ever temporary installation using two of its premier high-security fencing systems for the other three sides.It installed its 3.6m high SecureGuard PAS68 temporary security fencing along the 5.7km road to the southwest of the site, which runs broadly parallel with the lough. In addition, Zaun integrated rising arm barriers and 10 PAS68 gates for secure access control along the fence line.It also put in 1.7km of its award-winning Rapid Deployable System (RDS) at each end, creating a secure perimeter from the road to the edge of and into the lake.RDSZaun had to make several adaptations to its multi-award-winning RDS that was first used for four political conferences on the mainland in 2012 and bought by The Home Office to add to the National Barrier Asset.In addition to the cable system on the front of the fence line gives the system it's PAS68 rating of 30mph (PAS 68:2010 V/7500(N2)/48/90:11.6/0.0), Zaun incorporated further enhancements to prevent mob attack on the run-up to the summit. Both RDS and SecureGuard were extensively tested by PSNI and the Home Office against mob attacks. These tests will now form the basis of a new standard adopted by the Home Office when testing systems.Zaun also created specially designed posts to carry additional one-tonne weights to prevent movement on the 30-metre section of RDS fencing that actually tracked into the lake itself to discourage protesters from breaching the perimeter via the water.RDS was used on remoter areas around the edge of forest land, dirt tracks and grassy knolls with undulating ground, and boggy land at the airport to provide Airforce One and other presidential jet landings.

The solution was fully adjustable against typical flat roof falls, and did not penetrate the waterproofing below. Steelwork was hot dip galvanised whilst landings were a non-slip 8mm thick GRP sheet to provide great slip resistance. Supplied with full handrail and kick plates to all exposed sides, to ensure safe passage of pedestrians and cargo.

Self building allows one to shape their own future, that's what Olaf Mason and Fritha Vincent did when they bought the land to develop their new home. Each of the showrooms have been designed to allow freedom to explore the range of vehicles in a contemporary environment that is both luxurious and inviting. The Aston Martin and McLaren showrooms are also the first in the UK to showcase the newest corporate identities for the brands.The Jaguar Land Rover £15 million showroom is both light and spacious. It provides 18 vehicle display spaces and dedicated vehicle handover suites. There is also a drive-in service area, valet and preparation area. The Lusso 25 single glazed frameless glazed partition system was installed to create office spaces which allows uninterrupted visibility to the showroom. McLaren has a history of exceptional design and engineering, so it is not surprising that the design for the showroom includes a feature curved glazed partitioning system with curved glass sliding doors. Lusso rose to this challenge and bravely executed the complex design requirements. With this statement partitioning, the showroom becomes a be-fitting space for the stunning range of McLaren supercars, providing the customer with an unforgettable shopping experience. As a prestigious brand, Aston Martin is well-known around the world for being a car manufacturer that produces vehicles that turn heads. Their stylish new showroom has been designed to provide a luxurious backdrop for their stunning supercars.The development of the facility has created a bespoke environment with a dedicated customer specification lounge, private handover area and aftersales facilities.With the use of Lusso Glazed Partitioning System, the bespoke showroom has been given a sleek look which was required for this brand.Image - 8

The architects of the Guardian’s new building approached Cyclepods to help plan and design the basement level. They had designed a layout using standard bike stands and could only fit in enough racks to secure 118 bikes. We requested the plans and designed a layout using our Spacepods. After a few revisions we settled on a design that utilises 189 Spacepods giving 189 secure bike parking spaces. Nearly 60% more than the original plan. The Guardian have noticed an increase in cyclists since our products were installed!

Moreland Primary School is a purpose built school, nursery and Children's Centre requiring a multipurpose usable outdoor space. Due to lack of space, the ground attenuation tanks planned would reduce site storage and limit access to other trades, therefore delaying the project, The challenge was to develop a storage/discharge system which wouldn't impact the project and be sensitive to the local biodiversity action plan. ABG designed a versatile Blue Roof System removing the need for attenuation tanks and allowing the roof finishes required. ABG bio-diverse roof system helped maximise the BREEAM credits laid out in the action plan

Project:  Refurbishment and restoration of 6 flights of concrete stairs and landings at Pennybank Chambers, London     Client: Emrys Architects, DDC LTDMaterials used:  MicroConcrete coating in Grey colour and Satin finishThe Living Concrete team were commissioned by Emrys to refurbish and restore an old concrete staircase. This was followed by hand application of Microconcrete coating with Anti-slip agent around the cast iron step threads which were cast in brass finish.  MicroConcrete coating is especially suitable to this type of artisan restoration and it is ideal for tougher environments such as stairs, shop and office floors, bars, hotels and exteriors with no need for joins or breaks. It can be applied over existing materials which reduces the time needed for application and maintenance.

The town was in need of a new library building and determined they would demolish the old structure and start fresh. Building a new library became an opportunity for the town; the building would become the focus of The Landing district within Weymouth, a central area in town in the midst of revitalization. Specializing in education and library design, Tappé Architects was chosen to design the community’s new library and neighboring park. In the year 2000, Occidental Petroleum purchased the islands, known as THUMS Islands or Astronaut Islands, and operations. The islands contain significant landscaping, a waterfall, and tall structures concealing the drilling rigs, including one known as The Condo and often mistaken for "a ritz hotel" by those on land. Island Grissom is the closest to land and contains more sculptured screens than the other islands.The ChallengeOver the years, wind and water have taken their toll on the concrete structures around the island, causing a great deal of deterioration. A few obstacles to overcome were:The depth of repair (Tapcons were driven into the substrate for added reinforcement in the deeper areas of repair)Direct sun/heatHeight of repair was as high as 100 feetLimitations on water saturation for presoak and wet cure.Deliveries had to be scheduled precisely as all products had to be shuttled over to the island via ferry.Five Star® SolutionChosen for this demanding repair project was Five Star Structural Concrete® W/O because of its rapid-setting properties and ability to be used on vertical and overhead surfaces. Auckland Castle is just one of the many charming attractions of the Auckland project. The castle is one of the best-preserved bishops’ palaces in the whole of Europe and is at the centre of the Auckland Project. It is based in North England, showcasing fragments of a medieval castle discovered during recent archaeological digs, open to the general public.The project criteria The reconstruction of Auckland Castle required new access walkways, landings and stairs for visitors to be able to access the top, where they can experience stunning views across the town. For this purpose, it was essential to provide a very safe solution that responded to the strict criteria for public access walkways, while also meeting the prescribed design criteria to match the architectural milieu and building. Safe, Practical, Architectural steel walkwaysEven though the stairs, walkways and landings’ primary function is to provide safety for users to wander around Auckland Castle at height, the architects had unique requirements for the design. The Seed is a blueprint for sustainable construction. This new build home used next to no concrete, is insulated with recycled paper, was built around a tree and root protection plan, and incorporates a plan for deconstruction and reuse at the end of its life. Our timber products were another key sustainable element that was carefully specified by the architect, and they are used inside and out for cladding, decking and flooring.

The refurbishment was created with a light touch but transformed the main building entrance and reception, upper-floor common areas, WCs and half of the office floors. Work was undertaken whilst the other office floors remained in occupation.The reception refurbishment reused many of the existing high-quality materials, which complements terrazzo, but also helped to transform the space into a contemporary interior whilst retaining the grandeur and sense of arrival.Terrazzo is also in harmony with the edgier interventions such as the distressed metal ceiling raft and lighting which have contributed to the building appealing to the next generation of banking tenants with start-up bank Monzo taking the vast majority of vacant space in the building.The gentle approach to refurbishment and the reuse of materials as well as the use of terrazzo contributed to meeting British Land’s exacting sustainability targets.

Back in 2019, the William's Group opened the doors to their brand-new flagship automotive retail store based in Trafford City. The store was set to home luxury brands such as MINI, BMW, Land Rover and Jaguar all within one compound. This meant they needed an effective perimeter security system that would hold up against intruders onto the site and also added protection around the showrooms that would house these luxury cars. For the entire perimeter protection, they selected the Eclipse-60 V Mesh Profiled Fencing to deter vandals and intruders, whilst opting for the Securus-Lite SR1 358 Fencing to encompass the showrooms for that additional level of security they required. The Williams Group also chose the SlideMaster Sliding Gate as the perfect match for their ingress and egress security.

Part of a £5 million plan to bring more business to the south side of the North West resort, Enterprise Court is the latest development in the Blackpool Enterprise Zone, situated on Amy Johnson Way.Funded entirely by private sector investment and consisting of small offices and workshops, the development will initially comprise of 12 units. The plan is to increase capacity to 50 units with potential for further expansion at a later date.

Plans were passed in 2012 for the construction of an outstanding hotel in Birmingham city centre. The build was the first in a group of five, four-star hotels planned to open over a period of five years under the Hotel La Tour brand. The 174 – bedroomed luxury hotel was developed at a cost of £24 million and comprises a restaurant, bar with terrace and conference facilities. RCM’s Cemboard was used as a primary sheathing board on the project

Arden windows were approached by a Main Contractor that was looking for a manufacturer and installer of high quality sliding sash windows to replace several hundred windows across various properties in on behalf of the Borough. The client’s key considerations were to ensure that their residents were provided with a thermally efficient high-performance window that would provide a better home whilst ensuring planning authorities and local conservation were content with the design and aesthetics of the replacement windows. Arden were invited to be involved with the project at a very early stage and were able to offer assistance with the submission of the planning applications, including discussions with conservation officers for the area. Ultimately Arden surveyed the properties, produced drawings to demonstrate existing and proposed details for the replacement windows and achieved full planning consent. During the process, Arden representatives worked directly with the Conservation officers including providing sample windows and attending a number of meetings in an effort to ensure that the replacement double glazed windows were acceptable to all parties. One of the key issues encountered was the initial reluctance of the Conservation Officer to allow the single glazed windows to be replaced by double glazed units using a bonded spacer bar as opposed to a more traditional solid glazing bar. As the client was keen to ensure costs were kept to a minimum and thermal performance was improved, the preferable choice was to use Arden Window sliding sash window with a bonded bar and a “plant on” timber glazing bar. Once Arden had manufactured a full-size sample window this was shown to the Conservation officer and the benefits explained. Due to the traditional appearance of the Arden window, the planning applications were approved and the project was able to proceed. Early engagement with Arden was key to the successful outcome of the project. This ensured that the design and planning requirements of the client and conservation teams were realised. It also facilitated the planning of manufacture and installation, coordinating with the main contractor at a very early stage thus ensuring the project was delivered and completed on time and within agreed budgets. 

In 2013, The All England Lawn Tennis Club (AELTC) announced plans for a multi-million pound refurbishment of the No.1 Court, famous as the second largest Show Court used for The Championships, Wimbledon. Included in the plans was the installation of two living walls, one each side of the Big Screen facing Aorangi Terrace, commonly known as ‘the Hill’. To achieve this landscape vision Biotecture was appointed to work with the AELTC on the design, planting, installation and maintenance of the living walls.

Portsmouth is home to the Land Rover Ben Ainslie Racing America’s Cup sailing team. TAC Projects were employed by the main contractor - Allied Developments - to provide the roofing and cladding works. Kings Cross Railway has been one of the largest and most exciting London redevelopments in recent years. In Victorian times Kings Cross was a thriving industrial area but by the end of last century, mostly had fallen into disrepair and dis-used buildings, sidings, warehouses and contaminated land. The move of the Channel Tunnel rail link from Waterloo to St Pancras in 1996 meant the need for change at the 67 acre site. The glass roof consists of two adjacent Victorian steel ‘barrel-vaults’ which now feature our PlasGard patent glazing system. A special glazing bar for use at the ridge was designed with a low external capping so as not to cast shadow onto the photo-voltaic cells to ensure optimal performance. Elsewhere laminated clear glass was used for safety in accordance with overhead glazing guidelines.

RAF Akrotiri is home to the Cyprus Operations Support Unit providing joint support to British Forces Cyprus and operations in the region to protect the UK’s strategic interests.The base was opened in 1955 to initially relieve the pressure on the main RAF station on the island, and has since grown into a forward thinking training unit. The Lucent Development creates balance that boosts productivity and wellbeing.Lucent W1 is quite literally built around nature, with a tree towering in the central atrium and an internal green wall that stretches the full height of the world-famous external lights. The innovative Fletcher Priest design has created offices that are cocooned away from the surrounding city, while 20 terraces allow panoramic views across the capital.For this design, Selo used the Quarda Riser Door which are the most high-performance metal riser doorsets. Perfect for concealing fire-rated riser doors, access panels, and internal doors in corridors, landings, and other access areas; Quadra+ is supplied as an integral, four-sided frame and door system, pre-constructed to form a single robust unit. Ideal for hidden commercial access solutions, Quadra+ is designed and manufactured to the highest standards.

This housing development required a retaining wall solution but presented challenges in terms of limited space and existing services. Two retaining walls were required at the sides of the entrance to Nicholls Lane housing development. While a Geogrid Reinforced Backfill method was appropriate for the Secura Grand retaining wall on the righthand side of the development, the retaining wall on the left was met with the challenges of limited space and existing services. The highway boundary limited the amount of space available to construct the retaining wall on the left- hand side. The existing services present within the retained soil caused further complexities. On this occasion minimising excavation was crucial due to the services within the retained soil. Efficient use of land was vital as the Secura wall didn’t have the room at the back for geogrid or for no-fines concrete backfill. It was desirable that both walls at the sides of the entrance looked the same despite their different conditions.

Our Timber Slatted Ceilings System were chosen as the ideal solutions for the boardroom and large general meeting space.

Rising above the tree-topped embankment of North Acton tube station, the building forms part of an emerging neighbourhood and provides 173 flats. The rational plan and the elegant elevations are integral to one another addressing form and function simultaneously, so that the geometry and detail of the distinctive balconies is as much about providing privacy and views as it is about rhythm, articulation and visual interest. Views through open-plan layouts emphasise space and light and allow connections from inside to the generous balconies.

Rockfon Mono Acoustic's tile/filler/render system was used to control reverberation in a large open plan office.

The tower original name was Portsmouth Millenium Tower, designed as a monument to commemorate the Millennium celebrations in 2000. The project was conceived in 1995, and planned to open in 1999. However, due to political, financial, contractual and constructions problems, the project just began in 2001, and was completed in 2005. The tower was also renamed to Spinnaker Tower, because its construction was not completed for the Millennium as planned. In order to protect the façade elements against moisture, driving rain and wind avoiding corrosion, insulation deterioration and mould growth, Effisus Breather FR System was applied.

Architect: Simon Gill Architects. The brief for this project in Putney was to modernise the ground floor of this red-brick detached house, create a larger dining room and better connect the inside of the home with the garden. The end result is a complete transformation. Gone are the compressed spaces and smaller rooms and in their place is a large open-plan living area with seamless connection between the lounge, kitchen and dining room. These open plan spaces are filled with natural light thanks to a combination of Grand Slider II sliding doors and huge fixed frame picture windows.
