They employed the TerraSmart Rail system in their paved areas to help support this development.Systems Used - TerraSmart RailTerraSmart Rail was installed due to its light system weight and its lattice structure. Having a lattice structure provides multi-directional support across each paver which is ideal for high-footfall areas. ChallengesThe ground top surface that the system sits on has multiple level changes across the area. On top of this, the final finish also had to integrate with a traditional solid build-up. Porous asphalt surfacing for car dealership

Porous asphalt surfacing for car dealership

Tarmac

This large car dealership in Dorset required a new car park surface for the external paved areas. Planning requirements meant that a porous system was required to enable sustainable drainage and avoid large scale run-off into the surrounding catchment. Using Tarmac's ULTISuDS porous asphalt sustainable drainage systems met the needs of the local planners by managing surface water and reducing direct surface water run-off, but also met the client’s requirement for a safe, accessible all-weather surface for their customers. By eliminating surface water, it also eliminates the problem ice patches that can occur in cold weather conditions. It would also be durable enough to cope with daily vehicle movement and static loading from cars that were on display.

PermaBound Resin Bound Gravel Pathway & Patio - Springtime

GCL Products Ltd

About The ProjectIn this case study, we delve into the exciting journey through a recent project involving the installation of an 85m² Springtime resin bound gravel pathway and a 16m² patio. This project exemplifies the art of transforming outdoor spaces using top-quality materials and a skilled workforce with years of experience in resin bound gravel installations. The choice of the stunning Springtime blend and AH Paving's dedicated three-man installation team set the stage for a remarkable transformation. Springtime, with its vibrant and natural appearance, breathes new life into outdoor spaces. The customer's decision to opt for Springtime was driven by its beautiful mix of golden, brown, white, and red aggregates, creating a traditional colour blend perfectly suited for their countryside setting.Resin Bound Gravel Installation ProcessThe installation was expertly carried out by the three-man AH Paving team, showcasing their excellent teamwork and precise workmanship, honed through years of experience. The first team member meticulously managed the material mixing process. He created a textbook set up of their mixes with each stack featuring; a PermaBound resin binder, four bags of gravel from large to small and a bag of KLCP sand. Afterwards, he added the gravel, resin, and sand to their SoRoTo forced action mixer, ensuring each batch was mixed for the exact same duration before decanting the mixed material into a wheelbarrow for transport to the installation area. The second team member took on the role of evenly spreading the mixed material using a tool known as a spazzle. This step is crucial to ensure an even distribution of material across the surface at the correct depth, resulting in a well-compacted resin bound surface. The unique design of the spazzle streamlines this phase of the installation, making it both efficient and accurate. The third team member then took over, displaying their craftsmanship by hand-troweling the surface with The Resin Bull 500LT+ trowel. This step is vital for achieving a compact, level, and smooth finish. The expertise of the installers was evident in every stroke, culminating in a seamless and elegant finish. This process was repeated until both the path and patio were completed. The team's attention to detail ensured the creation of a stunning, uniform surface that is guaranteed to stand the test of time.Project OutcomeThe superb efforts of AH Paving combined with PermaBound materials resulted in a breathtaking Springtime resin bound gravel installation with an incredibly satisfied customer! The pathway and patio area have been utterly transformed with the use of high-quality, PermaBound products. These spaces now exude natural beauty, providing an attractive, permeable, and low-maintenance surface for years to come.If you’re considering a resin bound gravel surface for your home or commercial property, the PermaBound team and our extensive network of approved installers throughout the UK are ready to bring your vision to life. Please do not hesitate to contact us by calling 01246 418144 or LiveChat with us during office hours. The site is subject to constant traffic and extreme loading, with loading vehicles weighting up to 100 tonnes when carrying a container and daily use by HGV’s. Tarmac’s TOPFORCE fibre reinforced concrete offered the ideal solution. Although TOPFORCE concretes can be used instead of conventional steel reinforcement in some applications, in this case it would be used for added durability and crack resistance in a pavement design containing two layers of steel reinforcement mesh within a 300mm slab. The fibres within TOPFORCE provide three-dimensional reinforcement throughout the full depth of the pavement. This delivers improved abrasion, impact and crack resistance and enhanced flexural strength.Find out more at: https://tarmac.com/case-studies/fibre-reinforced-concrete-for-busy-transport-hub/

Keim Mineral Paints Ltd

This Grade II listed farmhouse in Monmouthshire has recently been redecorated using the KEIM Granital system. The 16th – 18th century limewashed lime rendered property needed a freshen up. The limewash was delaminating and powdery, lower sections on the northern elevation were damp with black mould, green growth moss and algae were prevalent on all elevations, as well as hairline cracks within the render.   It was specified that all elevations should be cleaned free of excessive mould and green-growth and powdery residue from the limewash. KEIM Algicid-Plus to be applied and left to dry on the surface before coating. The lower exposed render on the front elevation was suffering from splash back off the paving stone, it was recommended that an application of KEIM Silan Primer was applied on the first 0.5m of this elevation, to allow improved water repellence. The KEIM Granital system was then used to obliterate hairline cracks and provide a breathable coating.

Using Addaset resin bound and Addacolor resin bound coloured surfacing the main feature was the creation of a distinctive world map design. The project funded by the City of Edinburgh Council includes a new building for 1,400 pupils at the site in Portobello Park, sympathetically designed by JM Architects with the landscape in mind.SURFACING REQUIREMENTThe new paving around the school needed to be low maintenance and durable with good slip resistance. The project also required a colourful durable surfacing product to create a resin bound map of the world to be installed adjacent to the Geography department for use during lessons. Designed in contrasting Addacolor Blue and Addaset Lucerne Silver, the map design sets off the area beautifully and should hopefully encourage the pupils to get outdoors and ‘see a bit of the world’. Addaset Lucerne Silver was also installed to the forecourt and rear courtyards of the school to provide a free draining natural silver granite effect surface to complement the colour of the new building. The new school opened to pupils in October 2016.

Hudson Quarter, North Yorkshire

Tobermore

Hudson Quarter is a prestigious, multi-award-winning, mixed-use development of 127 apartments and 9,570m2 of Grade A office space. The apartments are housed within three residential buildings with one office building based around a central courtyard. The sustainable project achieved a BREEAM Excellent rating upon completion.  The site, previously an existing 1960’s office building is based in a highly sensitive location within the ancient city walls of York. Sensitively designed to sit comfortably within its historic setting, Hudson Quarter has been created respecting its past whilst embracing 21st century working and living.  A dedicated parking area was incorporated into the design, available for both office staff and residents. Tobermore worked closely with the design team to ensure appropriate hard landscaping was chosen for the large car park adjacent to Hudson Quarter.  Tobermore’s Artro block paving was perfect for Hudson Quarter as it can withstand significant trafficking and its clay-like look adds a heritage feel with a modern twist to the hard landscaping. The herringbone laying pattern was specified, not only for appearance, but also because of its trafficability.

Street furniture rusting steel planters

Street furniture rusting steel planters

Powdertech (Corby) Ltd

A major urban regeneration programme to revive a neglected area within the town centre, creating a vibrant community of shops, workplaces, and open spaces.Striking a balance between modern facilities and historic features was at the heart of the design brief, particularly referencing the industrial heritage. In former times this town played a major role in establishing the UK shoe industry Street furniture is throughout the re-development for which the architect decided to use premium powder-coated galvanized steel, delivering both visual appeal and high levels of resistance required within a heavy footfall outdoor environment. Rust-effect powder coat finish, ‘Sahara’ evokes the town’s manufacturing heritage that captures the look of weathered steel without the concern of staining the surrounding paving. Providing excellent weather resistance, colour stability and durability, Sahara was applied to metal planters, seating, bollards, railings and art installations. This achieves visual appeal and a fresh and bold aesthetic. The use of proven powder coating combined with galvanizing technology established in the architectural industry ensures that the street furniture will remain structurally sound and smart for many years to come. The project has achieved a key objective in attracting increased footfall in the commercial ‘sole’ of this once down-at-heel area.

Exchange Square

Exchange Square

In Opera (UK) Limited

Exchange Square, designed by DSDHA, is a refurbishment of a major 1.5-acre public park above the tracks of Liverpool Street Station in London. Our terrazzo was supplied throughout, including water features, amphitheatre steps, paving and planter edges with complex 3D pieces. The challenge for In Opera was to provide over 3000 pieces, 90% of which were unique and many having to fit into each other perfectly. The 1.5-acre park will see a four-fold increase in the amount of planting and dramatically enhance biodiversity, with 25% of the area featuring green space that is accessible to all.Quadrupling the amount of green space at Broadgate, the aim is to boost the emotional and physical well-being of those that work at Broadgate and the local community while supporting British Land’s commitment to sustainability and biodiversity. We are proud to have been involved in such a major development, which aims to draw people together and help the communities thrive in a better environment. What was once a dark uninviting space has been transformed into a light and welcoming place where people can truly live, where communities and businesses can thrive, and that helps the planet to flourish. It is a more attractive, less corporate environment for Broadgate, which creates places to dwell, not just pass through.

Opened in April 2019 by the Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, Hounslow House is the new greener-energy HQ of Hounslow Council in London.Building plans for the new purpose-built council offices included a rooftop communal area, and, impressed by what the team at AG could offer, it was agreed that AG’s TerraPave® premium granite flags perfectly fitted the requirement for a smooth granite finish flagstone, providing a more superior product than the original spec while also ensuring significant cost savings on the project. The 500m² area was given a beautiful aesthetic look through the use of our TerraPave® Rimini and Milano Ground (400x400x50mm) which was calibrated and laid on pedestals for speed of construction.Offering an attractive, cost-effective and practical alternative to traditional stone paving, TerraPave® is a favourite choice with architects and specifiers – and this is one project that proves why that’s the case.Dan Smith, AG Regional Sales Manager, said:“AG was able to provide better quality and a keener price on the products used. Furthermore, our team was also able to deliver both the experience and project know-how required to ensure the client received best value for money on the overall project.”

TERRABASE RUSTIC RESIN BOUND PATHWAYS FOR CHRISTCHURCH GARDENS LONDON

Addagrip Terraco Ltd

In late 2018 Westminster City Council commissioned WSP & Reardonsmith Landscape Architects to develop the design proposals for the Public Realm Improvements on Christchurch Gardens, a green space in the heart of Westminster, London.Works on the £3.3Million scheme commenced in October 2019 with extensive remodelling of the park to provide open and inviting footpaths into the gardens, new lawns, extensive planting and seating to offer a flexible open space that reflects the site’s historical background.Working with main contractor F M Conway, Addagrip approved contractor Street Tree was responsible for sourcing and planting large specimen trees, provision of 750 tonnes of soils and the installation of the 475m of Terrabase Rustic Resin Bound permeable paving that runs throughout the site.Due to the existing location of large London Plane trees along the perimeter of the garden and a desire to avoid compromising the trees, porous Terrabase Rustic in a 6-10mm Oak blend was installed onto a porous asphalt with Cellweb base. This provided a solution to allow site traffic access to these routes throughout the construction phase. The new resin bound surface provides decorative natural aggregate porous pathways with a rustic feel in keeping with this inviting green space in the heart of the city. The installation was completed in September 2020.
