WEYBRIDGE BUSINESS PARK

Metalline Architectural Fabrications

Metalline’s glazed in Ultima aluminium insulated panels have provided a specialist touch to the recently completed Weybridge Business Park in the Borough of Runnymede. The commercial office park features a number of office buildings that have been refurbished as part of a redevelopment for Standard Life Investments. The bespoke glazed in panels which feature on the window surrounds to the 1st and 2nd floors were coated in PPC golden beach metallic and feature a fluted design that met the architects vision for the external envelope of the building. The aluminum outer face was fitted with extruded box sections to give the fluted appearance. The aluminium section was then sealed using specialist rivets designed by Metalline for this specific application. Each of the 2 metre panels were then vacuum bonded using Metalline’s new 6-metre vacuum bonding press. Ultima panels are traditionally specified in aluminium with either an anodised finish in natural silver, bronze, black or blue-grey or in a range of polyester powder coated RAL and metallic colours. They can also be provided with a noncombustible A1 fire rated core. Alternative facings such as perforated aluminium, stainless steel or can be incorporated to create a truly bespoke panel.

Plot C1, English Cities Fund (ECF) New Bailey, Salford

Sotech Ltd

8300 SQM of Optima FC+, Optima FC+ perforated panels and Optima IPC (soffits) have been used in the completion of the 23-storey New Bailey building in Salford Quays.Optima FC+ was selected for a number of reasons on this project.Predominantly, it is an incredibly user friendly system – panels can be quickly and easily adjusted on site and the system can be fixed top down, or bottom up with individual panel removal and replacement. This makes Optima FC+ a highly desirable choice for designers and installers. However, the panels were specifically adapted for this project to enable a completely secret fix system, as per the architects vision. Therefore the top return fold was increased to 50mm instead of 38mm. This allowed for the security fixings to be completely concealed by the panel above, allowing the customer to easily fit the panels from ground up.Sotech worked closely with the design team and installer at the very early design stages to make this modification possible. The teams used a 3D modelling route, which allowed the customer to comment and make changes to the model without physical cost.Optima FC+ perforated panels were chosen as an additional aesthetic feature and Optima IPC was selected for the soffit areas as the architect requested a secret fix system.A bespoke window reveal and bracket was included in the panel design. This allowed for an extended side return which was used to hook on the panels and enable a secret fix. The Optima IPC system was perfect for this part of the design as it enables hidden mechanical fixings and is a cost-effective solution using 2.0mm aluminium.Black PPC aluminium was used as backing trays to enhance the appearance of the perforations, prevent views through the perforations and close off the cavity.Optima FC+ has been independently tested and certified to meet CWCT rigorous specification for rainscreen cladding and has been fire tested to BS8414-2 and classified to BR135 for high rise buildings. This makes it the perfect solution for Plot C1, now the tallest residential building in the New Bailey plot.Plot C1, which features a six-storey podium with an exclusive rooftop garden terrace for the wellbeing of residents, incorporates a number of sustainability measures including surface water drainage attenuation, minimising off site spoil disposal, reduced water consumption. The project has been shortlisted in the 2022 Facade Awards UK for ‘Best use of a rainscreen system using aluminium’.

Riga Wood birch plywood 3D acoustic shields ensure excellent acoustics at Mežaparks Great Band Stage

Riga Wood

The Mežaparks Great Bandstand is among the biggest bandstands in the world. On stage, it can accommodate approximately 13,000 choristers, while in the auditorium, there are more than 30,000 seats. The specially designed stage comprises 510 three-dimensional acoustic panels of different sizes. Each panel was installed at a different angle, assuring excellent sound quality during both bigger and smaller events. The spherically-curved shields are made of Riga Preprime and Riga Ply birch plywood, and both products show excellent technical and visual performance under different weather conditions. Each three-dimensional panel’s thickness is 36 mm – made of four 9 mm panels that are glued together. The panels are in 16 sizes, the largest with a 4 metre diagonal measurement. For long-lasting performance and to protect from sun, wind and rain, the panels are painted with special paint and partly covered with a roof. The project authors are architects Juris Poga and Austris Mailītis. The panels were manufactured by the timber structure design and manufacturing company ZAZA Timber. This year, the XXVII Nationwide Latvian Song and XVII Dance Festival will gather thousands of singers and dancers to celebrate dance, song and culture. Part of the festival will be held at Mežaparks Great Band Stand. Latvijas Finieris and Riga Wood are amongst the biggest supporters of the event and Riga Wood birch plywood products will be widely used in nine projects all over the city – starting from information signs and decorations to anti-slip stage floors and acoustic constructions.Since 1873, the nationwide Latvian Song and Dance Festival has been a part of the Latvian national identity that connects generations through the years. It has also been acknowledged worldwide and is included on the UNESCO List of the Masterpieces of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity.

West End Quay, London

Sotech Ltd

1100sqm of Optima FC+ in 3.0mm Aluminium Polyester Powder Coating finished in RAL 9006 has been used in the completion of West End Quay, situated in the heart of London.West End Quay, a mix of 1 and 2 bedroom luxury apartments, provided a new challenge for Sotech – with working to a curved panel requirement. Optima FC+ was chosen as it allowed fully welded and dressed units, that were both robust and aesthetically pleasing. The existing panels were curved horizontally around the slab and vertically around the window, with very little information on the existing structure. A2O used a 3D scan of the building to determine datum levels. With no ‘as-built’ drawings being available to assist in the remaking the panels, the team started again with new information supplied by A20’s design team.A20’s site team worked with Sotech to supply corex templates of existing curved panels to check the radius. Sotech also agreed to manufacture one of each panel type, before starting full production of the project to ensure the panels fit the complex curves. This gave the design team the opportunity to make modifications if required.Close collaboration was imperative by all parties to complete West End Quay on time and on budget. Work was carried out on a live residential area, meaning deliveries to site had to be carefully co-ordinated and palletised effectively for installation.Jamie Brown, Business Development Manager at Sotech, said:“As the works were carried out on a live residential area, it was vital our deliveries to site were carefully co-ordinated and palletised efficiently for install. The curved panel remakes had to be within millimetres of the templates provided from site to ensure they fit within the existing apertures. This is another fantastic example of how close collaboration between all parties gets the job done on time and on budget.”

The office building which will be occupied by HMRC, features a shimmering external envelope with an amalgamation of glazed units and rainscreen panels finished in a palette of champagne and sea foam green. Floor soundproofing for Phoenix House apartments, West London

Hush Acoustics

Hush Acoustics was tasked with providing an acoustic separating floor solution in an extensive material change of use project in Southall. Phoenix House was being converted by Vascroft Construction from an office building to residential flats, in a project which involved building into the basement, adding two floors and expanding at the rear. The development of 149 flats, each of which comprises 2 bedrooms, 1 ensuite, 1 bathroom, 1 kitchen/living area, required an effective design for the separating floors to ensure they would be effectively soundproofed throughout across multiple different floor finishes. After assessing a number of floor construction materials, Hush Panel 28 floating floor panels were selected to meet the acoustic performance targets. Using this panel meant that throughout the bedrooms and living areas a simple underlay could be laid before the finished carpets or engineered timber floor were installed. Hush Panel 28 was also suitable for the floors in the wet rooms and entrance hallways by applying Detromat on top of the panel to form an anti cracking surface.A team of more than 100 operatives worked on site, with every 1000 sq. m of floor completed per week, which Hush Acoustics supported to ensure Vascroft could meet the project’s strict delivery schedule.
