Ted Todd Fine Wood Floors

We were approached by this central London Asset Management company when they were refurbishing their offices. They were looking for something that had character, and that was of the highest quality, that could be used for flooring, cladding, and bespoke desks. Seaforth, from our Rare Finds portfolio, was ultimately specified due to its unique story and qualities. We reclaimed Seaforth from a disused warehouse on the Liverpool docks. In World War 2, the dock endured heavy bombing which led to fire damage. This historical damage was still present when we reclaimed the 6 metre longleaf pine beams.

DENMARK’S OFFICE OF THE YEAR

Troldtekt A/S

Troldtekt’s acoustic wood wool panels have helped interior design company Ambiente to win Nohrcon’s annual Danish ‘Office Building of the Year Award’ with its own office in Skanderborg, Denmark.  Created in collaboration with architect Ardess, the new 11,500sqm headquarters for this well-known interior design and exhibition stand company has unique features set within a raw and rustic environment and behind a minimalistic black steel façade. The centrepiece of the office is a 1,000sqm open external atrium which is overlooked by every department to develop a sense of bonding and equality between the tradespeople in production to the designers and sales team at their desks.  “The goal was to create something unique where high ceilings and spaciousness within a raw concrete frame would be a source of inspiration for both employees and clients,” says Ambiente owner and creative director Michael Skjodt. Consequently, the decor and spaces are designed to release creative ideas and build them up together with the customer.  The result is raw concrete floors and walls with 6.5m high ceilings contrasting against 18 staggered White City cubes, as they are called. These bright white rooms are used to stimulate creativity from meetings, exhibitions, showrooms and offices.  Black painted Troldtekt acoustic ceiling panels which have a natural rugged and uncomplicated appearance are used throughout the open areas and, when combined with long and heavy curtains, give the space an intimate and quiet atmosphere. These are complemented by white painted acoustic panels lining the ceilings and overhangs of the Cubes to maximise their brightness.  Specified throughout the UK and Europe, the benefits of 100% Troldtekt natural wood wool panels include high sound absorption, high durability, natural breathability, low cost life cycle performance and sustainability. Available in various sizes and in four grades from extreme fine to coarse, the panels can be left untreated or painted in virtually any RAL colour.Samples, case studies and technical information are easily sourced from tel 01978 664255 or from www.troldtekt.co.uk. Imperfection proves perfect for Oktra

IVC Commercial

Oktra is one of the UK’s leading office design and build companies, so when it came to expanding its London headquarters, it needed a flooring solution that showed its ability to deliver offices that are inspiring, agile and supportive. Step in our Imperfection premium carpet tiles.  A home and a showcaseThe 6 St Cross Street, London office of Oktra is not just home for the fast-growing and dynamic company but also a destination and showcase of office design for its customers. An exemplar of a modern, high-functioning workspace, the office’s basement was recently refurbished to accommodate a new materials library, meeting rooms and extra open plan desking for Oktra’s growing team.Naturally, Oktra turned to its own highly qualified and experienced design team to create the new area. For its choice of flooring in desking, collaborative areas and meeting rooms, the team selected our Imperfection Bruut carpet planks. Away from the normDominic Dugan is Creative Director for Oktra and was responsible for the basement design:“Our offices not only need to deliver a great place to work and collaborate for our colleagues, but also show clients how we understand the need to deliver office interiors that are agile, inspiring and responsive, as well as supportive, inclusive and effective. I chose new Imperfection Bruut from IVC Commercial because it helped us achieve exactly this.”“The carpet plank’s shape is away from the square norm and its design is unique. It has enough depth and detail to stand alone but it can also be used in combination to define zones and will hold its own in refreshed spaces of the future. The colour palette is highly usable, and this was important. Not too flashy with an elegance that ensures longevity, and which appeals to visiting clients. It’s a well thought out product with a sustainable construction and a design that works for today’s high-quality office spaces.”The perfection of ImperfectionDominic Dugan selected two colourways of Bruut, using the mid-grey of 911 and the darker 959 to donate areas of activity and provide navigation through the basement area. A total of 595 m² of carpet planks were installed by Oktra’s own fit-out team.As part of the Imperfection premium carpet tiles collection, Bruut is inspired by the Japanese philosophy of wabi-sabi – embracing the beauty of the imperfect. It’s one of three designs available and has been created to emphasise the transience of materials through a textured effect. With ECONYL® 100% regenerated nylon and 94% recycled EcoFlexTM Echo backing, Bruut is made with sustainable materials and supports wellbeing through good underfoot comfort, impressively quiet acoustics and pure air quality.

Style - Moveable Partition Specialists

In 2020, Hewlett Packard Enterprises relocated to The 210 Building, an inspiring office development in the heart of Winnersh Triangle. Working with architects, Perkins and Will, and BW Construction, Style was specified to create an extensive range of flexible space within the meeting rooms as well as a chic, collaborative working environment.Using a combination of 52dB Dorma Hüppe semi-automatic Variflex glass moveable walls, 55dB solid semi-automatic Variflex moveable walls and Style’s ingenious ‘working wall’ pivot panels, a supremely flexible and stylish training and meeting suite has been created. Hewlett Packard employees enjoy a contemporary environment with the freedom to rapidly change room configuration as often as required. The 210 Building offers 62,000 sq ft of newly refurbished office space, of which 31,000 sq ft has been let to Hewlett Packard Enterprise. Aiming to enhance the work/life balance of employees and staff located in the Winnersh Triangle, the Park offers a plethora of amenities including fitness facilities, cafes, open spaces for walking and cycling, an on-site nursery and even its own dedicated railway station. “This is a stunning installation,” said Julian Sargent, Style’s group managing director. “Everything about it is first class, making this a project we’re incredibly proud of.“The Variflex moveable walls offer top-end acoustic integrity, which means meetings and training sessions can take place undisturbed. The combination of glass and solid panels deliver a wonderful blend of privacy and transparency, while bringing a light and airy feel to the floor space.“The mix of fabric and writeable white board finishes offer a chic interior design yet a practical one too, and the pivot panels offer the perfect solution for collaborative working and break out groups.”Style’s agile, floating panel ‘working walls’ remove the usual barriers of meeting and training rooms, segregated work desks and cubicles, instead offering companies a space where individuals can group together, team up quickly on projects, share ideas and change their environment to suit the task in hand.

Mix and Match Solution for Global IT Firm

IVC Commercial

CGI is a global IT and business consulting firm that partners with governments and industries to deliver a broad range of digital services. With offices across the world and a growing team at its Bridgend site, the company commissioned Cardiff-based, renowned design and build practice, Powell., to expand capacity by converting existing rooms into new open plan, sound-absorbing office space and meeting areas featuring 200 additional call centre workstations. Made in Belgium flooring solutionsFor floors within the new area, Powell. recommended our made in Belgium flooring solutions, putting forward a mix of carpet tiles and luxury vinyl tiles. Through a series of design meetings, Powell. worked directly with the client to create a flooring scheme using Creative Spark, Expansion Point and Rudiments Basalt carpet tiles, along with Moduleo 40 Midland Oak luxury vinyl tiles.Chelsea Williams, one of Powell.’s designers, was responsible for the specification process:“The Canadian company has several overseas offices, dotted all over the world. Over many years, it has developed contracts with preferred suppliers and now works with Powell. on a range of projects of varying scales across multiple sites.“Powell. had not previously specified IVC Commercial for CGI works, but having developed a good relationship, we were confident that it was the right flooring for the application. Both CGI and Powell. were pleased with the results, and I’m personally sure that we’ll be calling on IVC Commercial again for other schemes across CGI sites in the future, as well as other clients of course.”Mix and match carpet tilesThe dark grey of Creative Spark 989 provides dominant cover in the open plan space and references other CGI offices. The organic design of Rudiments Basalt 363 – a striking red colourway – allows for a border and walkway throughout the open plan office space as well as a feature strip in meeting rooms. Expansion Point has then been used in a matching red (363) as zone separation for desking areas and in dark grey (987) as the main floor finish in meeting rooms. The scheme perfectly demonstrates the ability to mix and match different designs from IVC Commercial’s carpet tile collection. Bringing a coordinated look while supporting zoning and navigation, the affordable carpet tiles are all made from solution-dyed nylon to provide long-term durability and easy maintenance.Café cultureIn the main café for the new office space, Powell. and CGI specified Moduleo 40 Midland Oak 22929 luxury vinyl tiles. A classic oak effect in a complimentary grey to the surrounding carpet tiles, Midland Oak comes with a large pattern to avoid tell-tale repeats and achieve a more natural looking floor. Finished with Protectonite®, it’s also scratch and stain-resistance and easy to clean – ideal for the busy café area. The confidence of design and quality“We showed IVC Commercial products to the client as we had confidence in the design, quality and affordability of its flooring solutions, as well as knowing that the company is so environmentally minded, which is as important to Powell. as it is to CGI. Working with IVC Commercial makes it easy for us to get the information required, samples are always delivered promptly, and the client benefits enormously from the product.”Chelsea Williams, Powell.
GKD: A little closer to heaven

GKD: A little closer to heaven

GKD - GEBR. KUFFERATH AG

Commissioned by 30 member states of the European Union, the European Organisation for the Exploitation of Meteorological Satellites (EUMETSAT) monitors the climate and weather. In light of climate change, the data it collects using complex satellite systems is becoming increasingly important. The growth of the organization associated with this is reflected in the continuous expansion of its HQ in Darmstadt. The construction of a new six-floor office building also includes a canteen for all employees working at the location. This canteen gets its unmistakable face from a lamella-style suspended ceiling made of golden PC-ALU 6010 aluminum mesh from GKD – GEBR. KUFFERATH AG.Modern weather forecasts today have little in common with traditional country weather lore. Satellites make it possible to monitor the climate and weather on a global scale. The data collected is then used to keep authorities, citizens and companies up-to-date with the latest developments at all times. In Europe, EUMETSAT monitors the atmosphere, oceans and earth’s surface around the clock and then transmits the data to the participating EU member states. Established in 1986, the organization opened its headquarters in Darmstadt in 1991. However, ever increasing requirements and staff numbers meant that the operation quickly outgrew its original space. A six-floor office building with 160 workplaces represents the final phase of a whole range of extensions and new buildings. Following a construction period of just 18 months, around 100 employees were able to move out of their temporary container offices and into the new building costing around €10 million, while a further 60 new employees are set to follow. The shape of the new building, designed by Pielok Marquardt Architects from Offenbach, is a mirror image of an existing building. Beside excellent energy efficiency and multifunctionality, the new building is characterized by transparency and modern design. Four office levels offer versatile space with transparent partition walls for any desired arrangement – whether open space, combination offices or classic cubicles.Functional division – exceptional aestheticsThe ground level comprises two separate functional units that can be accessed via separate entrances. Beside a control center for a new satellite program, this is also home to the campus kitchen with connected canteen for the workforce at the location, which has now grown to include around 600 employees. The kitchen has been designed to provide 410 meals a day and the canteen offers 250 seats. The mullion-transom facade also ensures that the room is flooded with light. Carefully chosen furnishings divide its area into various acoustically optimized zones. The white of the desks and chairs is picked up by strips in the glossy flooring and the cladding of the food counter, pillars and supports. In the central zone, bright red benches with high, sound-absorbing backrests offer a vibrant contrast. The color scheme is rounded off by the warm brown of the stone floor and the wooden acoustic cladding. However, the striking element in the room is the suspended ceiling, made from 400 square meters of golden aluminum mesh. Its 120 elements with a blade-type design mimic the appearance of sunshine in the canteen with their discreet shimmer. LED lighting strips further underline this impression. At the same time, the mesh conceals the ventilation technology with incoming air outlets on the element frames. As a result, the accessibility of the woven ceiling elements was among the key requirements for GKD. The planners opted for a particularly open mesh design in the form of the PC-ALU 6010 mesh with various warp and weft wire thicknesses. The function and aesthetics of the ceiling mesh thereby provide the desired high level of comfort in the canteen, while also making the room a unique feast for the eyes.

Rockfon is the perfect fit for British lifestyle brand Joules

Rockfon

Rockfon is very happy to have played its part in ensuring the team at premium British lifestyle brand Joules’ new Market Harborough HQ can work in an interior environment where beauty and acoustic control create the perfect space for collaboration.Founded by Tom Joule over 30 years ago, the Group had ambitious aspirations to create a new home that would support its continued growth over the coming years.  Edge vision melds contemporary with heritageEdge Architecture + Design were appointed to lead the project and chose to specify Rockfon acoustic systems. The result is a contemporary, eye-catching 60,000 sq. ft. new HQ, which brings the brand’s UK-based office teams under one roof for the first time. Amplifying the brand’s heritage and reflecting the site’s semi-rural setting, the campus resembles a series of interconnecting barn structures that appear to have evolved over time. The complex is surrounded by landscaping including wildflower meadows and a kitchen garden which enhances the natural feel of the space. Michael Fern, Principle at Edge, said, “This new space will enable a workplace strategy of nimbleness, agile working and wellness… We also wanted to create a strong sense of place that respects the natural surroundings of the site and have designed the scheme as a human scale experience with the building and the landscape interacting in a symbiotic way. We took the local farmstead vernacular as a starting point for the visual aesthetic and used sustainable materials.”Tom Joule, Chief Brand Officer and founder of Joules, said, “This has been a hugely exciting project for our company and our future. We are delighted with the new HQ which will support agile working and new efficiencies in an environment that will enable our growing business to continue to attract and retain world-class talent. Edge’s design embodies our brand and will help us preserve and support our heritage and culture as we expand.”Agricultural cues inform an 21st Century aestheticThe exterior of the campus looks sharp against the skyline whilst taking visual cues and inspiration from agricultural architecture. The interiors are a mix of single and two storey spaces encapsulating open plan and more defined rooms with levels reached by broad stairways. Structural steel and timber add visual heft to the predominantly white pallete which sees certain elements picked out in oxide red, deep teal and warm grey. It certainly delivers the wow factor and promises to nurture creative thought.Bailey Construction were the main contractor for the project, with Elmsmere Interior Systems responsible for the installation of the Rockfon acoustic systems. Gary Sturgess of Elmsmere spoke about the project, “This was an interesting project with Rockfon Mono® Acoustic used in a variety of roles and settings to help control sound while fitting in with the clean, pared down style of the interiors. Everyone concerned is very happy with the completed work which showcases Mono’s versatility.”Pandemic pause affects design choicesAppointed in 2019, Joules’ CEO Nick Jones joined the Group during the design and construction of the new HQ. However, when the pandemic struck and people shifted to working from home, construction was halted which allowed the company to revise its plans to best suit new methods of working and office culture. In response the company has expanded the central atrium and created more space between desks to promote spontaneous interaction. Meeting rooms are equipped with tech enabling remote workers to easily participate, while floor-to-ceiling windows and outdoor features, including a bug hotel, help to connect the space to the company’s countryside heritage.Nick Jones commented, “With the opening of our new office, we have introduced a new fully flexible approach to how and where our colleagues work, and the space that we have is critical to that. Not only does our new office allow teams to better connect with one and other—whether in the office or working from home—but also brings the countryside in, to help inspire colleagues from across the business.”Rockfon Mono Acoustic – versatility and styleRockfon’s Matt Barratt, “The completed Joules HQ looks fabulous. Throughout its open plan offices Rockfon Mono Acoustic has been installed to great effect, bringing together the seamless, clean lines associated with traditional plastered surfaces and acoustic performance thought only possible with modular systems. Large windows, structural steel and other hard architectural elements can generate unwanted sound within a space. Mono provides Class A sound absorption (0.95αw) which significantly decreases echo and reverberation levels.”The current utility aesthetic is in evidence at ‘the Barn’. Air conditioning, heating, ventilation and other services are on show in several areas, with Mono installed directly above. It offers Class A2 fire protection and remains dimensionally stable at up to 100% relative humidity. It offers 87% light reflection and greater than 99% light diffusion. In common with other Rockfon acoustic systems, Mono is made with a core of naturally occurring inert volcanic rock stonewall, is non-combustible and will not harbour harmful microorganisms and bacteria. It can be installed using a suspended grid system or be directly mounted on to the ceiling soffit or and wall.
