OverviewThis project saw the refurbishment of King Solomon International Business School, which was changing hands from office use to education. The building now features specialist science rooms, resistant materials workshop, drama studio, outdoor sports hall, music rehearsal rooms, food technology, ICT rooms and language rooms.ChallengesDue to the change of building use, a full survey of the roof covering was required. Excessive moisture was found within the existing asphalt covering, water ingress was present and the internal top floor of the building was not suitable to be used as a teaching space. The roof area presented many challenges with complex detailing to existing balustrade posts, live mobile telephone masts and large quantities of plant / M&E installed.SolutionsAs a starting point, the roof was completely stripped due to the high level of water ingress. The existing asphalt covering was removed ready for installation of a new Excel RBM system, with Hytherm ADH PIR thermal insulation. Much of the existing M&E was found to be redundant and could safely be removed from the roof area.The complex detailing to the balustrades and fire risk areas was simplified using Starcoat PMMA cold applied liquid waterproofing, allowing for a long term, robust and financially viable solution. High level roof areas were also detailed with ease using Starcoat PMMA. Located near Taunton, Somerset, the Halcon Centre provides short breaks, with 24-hour professional care, for up to 18 adults who are physically disabled or have sensory loss. SureProtect Design® bespoke wall cladding was installed in the main corridor at the centre featuring a row of imitation panels, that have been designed to look hand-drawn with a marker pen to offer the homely feel the centre was looking for. In addition, the Halcon Centre further increased the corridor walls’ protection by installing Gradus’s CGH5090 High Impact PVC-u Corner Guards and WGS200 Wall Guards, both in colour Gravel.

Re:Haus Aid is a registered Community Interest Company who work with both global and local charities to provide safe, warm, secure and robust relocatable accommodation pods for people who have been displaced due to armed conflicts or natural disasters.There are countless people who flee their country every year because of armed conflicts or natural catastrophes and many more who are displaced within their countries.Stelling properties designed an accommodation pod  that took a maximum of ten days to manufacture and can be installed at its destination in less than two hours.With this the pod had been insulated with ROCKWOOL® RWA45 75mm.

CUPA PIZARRAS’ CUPACLAD® 101 RANDOM rainscreen cladding system has been used to create a geologically inspired exterior for the Sedgwick Museum of Earth Sciences’ new £2 million Colin Forbes Building. The new building, located at the Madingley Rise site and named after Dr Colin Forbes, a senior figure in the university’s Department of Earth Sciences until his retirement, allows the collections to be reunited in one place. The building, designed by Cowper Griffith Architects and built by RG Carter, provides fully climate-controlled conditions for the collection with storage systems that allow easy access to all the specimens.

The project is located in a strategic and symbolic place in Marseille. It is close to representative buildings such as the Unité d'Habitation, designed by Le Corbusier.It has 676 housing units, 90 units for elderly people and the Renault concession with its garage and offices.Our Premium Plus roller shades are crank-operated and have double brackets to reduce the space between each system.Polyscreen® 365 fabric fits perfectly with the system, providing thermal efficiency and visual comfort as well as aesthetic value. Microgate Headquarters and Mesa – City Clinic Bolzano over five floors- is an ambitious project with spaces for interaction. The idea was to cover its glazed façade while preserving the innovative spirit of the companies.The architect Martina Biasi, who collaborated with Area 17, chose a winning combination of Bandalux products to resolve all these premises.Each roller shade installed, Arion, Premium Plus and Zi-Box Zip, provide efficient solar control. Every space of the building is designed to offer comfort, taking into account its needs: visibility and openness or total concealment. The selected fabrics, Polyscreen® 351 and BO are used in this way too.

Cornes buildings are an ambitious residential in Santiago de Compostela, which is next to the first train station of Galicia . This is one of the reasons to promote this space for a new lifestyle . Carbajo Barrios architects use concrete elements for the façade to minimize the impact of sunlight on buildings as well as give a strong architectural character . Bandalux vertical blinds were chosen as a solar control system, creating visual harmony as well as efficient sunlight management . Polyscreen ® fabric perfectly complements the clean style of interior designs, allowing visual contact outside when desired by the owners . For these headquarters based in Barcelona, a former industrial site was reformed, to adapt the structure to the brand needs . The architect explains that “understanding the design of the interior spaces [was] an important element of branding capable of generat [ing ] brand value”, according to Stefano Colli .On the big glazed façades, Premium Plus roller blinds are used with a Polyscreen ® 403 in Slate color . Sandtex Flexigloss X-Tra and Sandtex Metalgloss X-Tra are hardwearing, and have added inhibitors to minimise UV damage, protecting the building’s exterior joinery and metal.

This £21 Million project involved partial demolition, refurbishment and extension of the existing East Wing of the Student’s Union to create a spacious, modern and accessible mixed-use building. The stunning design by Shepheard Epstein Hunter, features a spectacular façade to the four-storey extension which fronts directly onto the University’s central square. Created using Senior’s thermally enhanced SF52 silicon glazed and fully capped curtain walling, with the innovative patented PURe® aluminium opening vents, the façade gives a light and spacious feeling to all four floors. Curved glazing and perforated panels add to the dramatic appearance.

The Dyson Institute has been established with the ambition of being the best higher education engineering institution in the world. The campus radiates around the two-storey Roundhouse where 220 panels of Rockfon Eclipse® ceiling islands are installed. Rockfon Eclipse is very versatile and can be hung from several kinds of structures where traditional suspended ceilings cannot usually be installed. World leading architectural practice Wilkinson Eyre designed and oversaw the project. The new Hilton Garden Inn Hotel enjoys a prime location with stunning views overlooking the Lancashire Cricket pitch at Emirates Old Trafford. To create the bright and welcoming entrance to the new hotel, Senior’s slimline SF52 aluminium curtain walling was used alongside our SPW600 aluminium casement windows and robust SPW501 aluminium commercial doors. The rooms at the rear of the hotel, which directly overlook the cricket ground, feature Senior’s patented, thermally-enhanced PURe® SLIDE aluminium sliding doors. Pura® NFC by Trespa brings long-lasting fresh and natural look to hayling island beach homeWith its unspoilt Blue Flag beaches, Hayling Island, off Englands’ south coast, is the perfect location for a relaxing holiday on the seaside. Designer Ian Murray, owner of architectural practice I J Murray Associated Ltd, wouldn’t want to live anywhere else. When he and his wife Carole had the opportunity to buy a plot of land a stone’s throw from the beach, they immediately decided it would be the perfect place for their dream home. And if you are in the business, why not design and build it yourself?

Design-led flooring solutions for the customer-facing areas was decided upon, with Gerflor’s Taralay Impression Control fitting the brief by combining the specification qualities of performance and slip resistance along with aesthetics. Installed within the reception, corridors and cafeteria areas, it also unified and enhanced the décor of these hard working, communal spaces. A simple to maintain surface was also an important characteristic for the multi-function fitness studio flooring enabling it to be quickly cleaned. Meeting this brief was Gerflor’s Taraflex® Comfort in wood-effect design ‘Oak’: “Being a multi-use space, we needed a hardwearing surface but not a clinical feel or look.

An £8m administrative hub at Bristol Airport has a bespoke Knauf Ceiling Solutions systems fitted throughout. A visually intricate honeycomb effect ceiling required the meticulous installation of suspended hexagonal acoustic rafts with precise spacing. A bespoke DONN® grid ensured each MINERAL Sonic Element was positioned equidistant to each other. Stride Treglown Associate Architects commented, “The internal aesthetic is an honest expression of the steel structure and exposed services installation. However, these two factors require careful acoustic consideration. The result is a series of randomly arranged, hexagonal suspended rafts that provide acoustic function, and a strong visual statement.”

This mixed use development on the southern fringes of the Olympic Park utilised the Nexus® system to achieve flawless brick-faced soffits to the hundreds of door and window heads. Nexus is a two-part brick soffit system that combine a high integrity stainless steel brickwork support system with custom-designed prefabricated brick faced soffit units. Being 70% lighter than traditional cast concrete solutions, the Nexus soffit system is simply lifted and bolted into position by hand and, as the brick slip facing is manufactured from the same batch as the main brickwork, presents a perfect colour and texture match for flawless transitions.

The task was to replace old wooden floor planks with modern, robust, weatherproof and slip-resistant steel flooring and stair treads that met all the customer’s requirements pertaining to load. In particular, the customer was keen to reduce the strain on workers during both dismantling and assembly. Furthermore, it was also necessary to reduce the noise pollution which occurred when working with metal against metal.The solutionIn cooperation with our customer, the customer’s assembly teams and our product development department, solutions were developed that met the above requirements.User safetyOne of the main challenges which had to be addressed in the customer specification was the requirement for a slip-resistant surface. Here we were able to incorporate a surface design based on our PcP OPTIMO® O2 surface, which has already been used for a wide range of projects worldwide. OPTIMO® O2 is certified according to R13/V10 slip-resistance and meets the strict demands to slip-resistance. OPTIMO® O2 grating discreetly improves safety for visitors during an event while also improving handling for the installation team.With a very small surface perforation of only Ø 5/9 mm, people frightened of heights are unable to look down directly through the platform on which they are standing, thereby guaranteeing a sense of security. Furthermore, this profiling solution offers perfect drainage, ensuring that the floors always remain dry.Combining aluminium and steel – a lightweight solutionFor the system flooring, a combination of aluminium and hot-dip galvanised steel was chosen to reduce weight without compromising capacity. For example, the gratings used for floors and treads were supplied in aluminium and screwed together with high-strength steel end pieces to form a complete unit. This reduced the weight of the components, and provided a significant ergonomic advantage compared to the wooden planks which had been used to date.Reducing noise pollutionDespite the considerable weight reduction from using individual components, another challenge presented itself. Some of the treads and platforms on the metal substructure produced considerable rattling noises. However, even this challenge was overcome with a slightly unconventional method. By installing small oak blocks in the steel end pieces, the fixing points were tightened on the substructure, which significantly reduced the rattling noises.The resultThe customised solution combined steel and aluminium PcP products to provide extremely safe gratings for system floors and stairs for mobile and stationary grandstands. The solution is more ergonomic, lighter and meets the high requirements for safety and load bearing.Furthermore, it meets the overall objective of ensuring safe events for visitors. A successful event relies on the successful implementation of grandstand systems.

Recognizing the need for improved housing in this landstrapped space, Shilshole Development, LLC, undertook construction of a new multifamily residence, the Shelton Eastlake Apartment Complex. Right away the development team realized the success of their project hinged on creating an apartment complex that added both housing and character to the Eastlake community. Multifamily developments have a reputation for focusing on function, rather than form, to maximize profits.

Leviat’s Ancon MDC Masonry Support and Ancon CombiDeck, along with Ibstock Kevington’s Nexus® Brick-Faced Units have played key roles in constructing a major student accommodation complex in the heart of Lincoln, offering overall efficiency and ease of construction.The complex is spread across ten blocks, ranging from 4 to 10 storeys in height, which have been sub-divided to reduce scale and facilitate a progressive change in character across the development. The first phase included 1,222 bedrooms in apartments, comprising six to 12 en-suite bedrooms. Students will also benefit from associated internal and external amenity space.

This home is situated on the grounds of an old quarry, with views over the valley towards an engine house. The customers wanted to be able to enjoy their view to the maximum and using glass balustrade provides a safe and solid railing. This home is highlighted throughout with copper oxide furnishings, the front door and elements of the kitchen follow this theme while the sink splash back is made from glass petals in a beautiful glass meadow scene. The balcony glass was the last outside job to be done, having to wait for the kitchen counter to be installed through the French doors it was safer to install the glass after this had been carried over the balcony. Now that winter is coming the indoor jobs can be finished off and the home owners can enjoy their newly renovated home! This installer has used POSIglaze base-fix in black. Balcony Seal® has also been used to ensure water can run off the balcony under the channel without causing water ingress. Most balconies and flat roofs are built with a slight pitch to encourage rainwater to drain towards the edge of the roof. In these cases, the balustrade installer needs to allow for drainage points under the channel, to avoid water pooling around the edge of it. The Balcony Seal® system works by subtly raising the channel a few millimeters above the substrate on drain blocks. Notches on the top side of the drain blocks locate into the rebates of the POSIglaze channel, locking it into position before the system is bolt-fixed to the substrate through each block.

Some of Europe's most sophisticated buildings incorporate thermal break technology from Schöck, but the new Mercury City Tower in Moscow is to date possibly the most iconic, and certainly the tallest, to utilise the Isokorb®.Rising 327 metres above the Moscow skyline, the Mercury City Tower, is currently the highest building in Europe, beating London's Shard into second place by some 17 metres. This remarkable building is the centrepiece of a £7 billion International Business Centre development known as Moscow City, located about two and a half miles to the west of Red Square.It is bult on a 150 acre site that used to be an old stone quarry area consisting of derelict factories and industrial complexes and will shortly become the first zone in Russia to combine business activity, living space and entertainment in one single development. Claimed to be the first truly environmentally-friendly building in Russia, it will house the offices of some of the world's leading companies; along with five-star hotels, luxury apartments, prestigious clubs, fitness centres, fashion boutiques – and even Moscow's largest concert hall will be relocated there – making it effectively a city within a city.A key design feature of the building is the use of inclined planes at various levels of the structure, which support vertical posts on which the facade cleaning system is installed. To prevent any of the risks associated with thermal bridging, it is necessary to separate the vertical posts from the thermal contour of the building. The unusual shape, size and characteristics of Mercury City required careful planning and the design of a unique Isokorb® T insulation element; which in addition to its exceptional thermal performance requirements, also has to bear loads on two of the inclined planes.

A residential development, Timber Wharf is located on the corner of the Roman-built Kingsland Road and 19th-century Regents Canal and features commercial space as well as a canal-side restaurant.The residential area is grouped around a quiet cobbled courtyard offering a sheltered play area, while the waterfront apartments make up the courtyard’s northern edge and are set back from the canal, overlooking a very attractive, quaint and safe community garden.We worked very closely with Kier Group PLC (one of the largest regional builders in the UK) and ALU Installations (a leading installer of non-combustible decking and cladding systems in the UK) to deliver this very important remediation project.The timber boards on the walkways and balconies along the facade and the waterfront were replaced with our BalcaSmart® Aluminium and TerraSmart® Aluminium systems, which are ideal for remediation, new-build, and refurbishment projects.The refurbishment project was completed this year, delivering peace of mind to residents and owners alike, especially after the Grenfell Tower fire and changes to fire safety regulations.Installed with great care and attention to detail, seamlessly meeting stairwells and other structural elements, our BalcaSmart and TerraSmart Aluminium systems complement the overall aesthetics of the building, are lightweight, long-lasting, and most importantly able to meet the load requirements of its walkways, which also form part of the fire escape routes.Both BalcaSmart and TerraSmart Aluminium systems carry our IGNO mark of assurance for non-combustibility and reassure specifiers by way of a 30-year warranty and a 60-year design life (when used as part of a complete RYNO IGNO system).

This building was once home to the Henderson Garage door production facility, with the client in the process of renovating the entire premises to be split into several new warehousing and office units. To be able to secure new tenants, however, there was an urgency to stop a mass amount of water ingress into the building, due to the roof's years of neglect.Systems in useHyranger®Starcoat® RChallengesThe state of the existing waterproofing was poor, meaning it needed to be stripped back to the metal deck below. Given the years of water ingress it was clear some areas of the substrate were deteriorating and would need replacing.There was also an issue with the adjacent metal cladding to the perimeter of the roof space, one of which was coated in an asbestos paint and the potential for asbestos rope within the old rooflights. All of this needed addressing prior to the roofing works commencing.SolutionsAxter were called to initially survey the roof area, highlighting the main areas of concern and interface issues. Following a roof condition survey report, proposals were put forward as to how best to detail waterproof these areas and achieve the brief set out by the client.To the metal cladding, Starcoat R cold applied liquid bitumen PU resin was used to create a waterproofed upstand without the need for the complete removal of the cladding. Upon discussions with the building owner, it was also discovered that the existing rooflights were no longer needed, so these were boarded over and waterproofed in line with the rest of the main field area.The Hyranger system, comprising polyester reinforced SBS polymer modified bitumen membranes, was ideal for the job due to its guarantee strength, stability, performance and cost efficiency.The completed roof gained a 20 year guarantee and extended the life of the building.

St Francis of Assisi Catholic College in Walsall, needed to replace their existing flooring in their main sports hall, in order to cater for the demanding needs at the facility.International flooring specialist Gerflor supplied 650m2 of their world class Taraflex® Multi-Use vinyl sports flooring in Light Grey (Concrete) to complete the refurbishment project to the highest standards.Chris Newey, Gerflor Specification Area Sales Manager, West Midlands said, “The existing sports hall floor was in desperate need of refurbishment. The new Concrete effect Taraflex has transformed the look of the hall from a dated school sports hall to a fresh and very modern look.”The management and procurement process of the new sports floor would be the responsibility of the Schools Site Manager Bernie McNally who is a former professional footballer for West Bromwich Albion and has also pulled on the green jersey for his home country Northern Ireland.Bernie McNally said, “We are delighted with the results and how less intrusive Gerflor’s Taraflex sports flooring was to fit, against digging concrete out which would have been a lengthy, costly, and messy process. Our Headmaster is really impressed with the new Taraflex sports floor, which is performing really well and also looks amazing, the before and after pictures speak for themselves.”The installation of the new Taraflex® Multi-Use floor would be undertaken by the Solihull-based FLR Group. Project details Charles de Gaulle International Airport is the second largest airport in Europe after London Heathrow. It is located just outside Paris and handles over 50 million passengers every year. For this reason it can be difficult to find the time for maintenance and repairs. "The airports floors have to withstand constant heavy traffic from passengers, staff and maintenance workers. It was therefore important that their repair and paint products were quick to apply, cure and hard wearing." The work that needed to be carried out was at the entrance to Terminal 3 which is the main public transport hub for Charles de Gaulle. For this reason the work needed to be carried out and finished between the hours of 9.30pm and 6.30am. After this time heavy traffic would resume. Our solution The first job was to clean the concrete floor slabs with Watco Concroff to remove all surface contaminants including oil and fats. Watco Concroff contains no solvents or other chemicals that are dangerous for the environment and penetrates even the thickest deposits of grease. The floor was then primed with Tack Coat, an epoxy resin adhesive primer which guarantees excellent grip on the key surface. As Charles de Gaulle is subjected to such heavy constant traffic a standard mortar would not be sufficient to withstand this, for this reason they choose Watco Concrex® Carbon Fibre. As it is as strong as granite it could be smoothed to a thickness of only 3mm, making the surface both waterproof and slip resistant. The Concrex® was subsequently painted with Safety Coat. Safety Coat is roller applied and contains fine, traction enhancing particles embedded in an epoxy resin coating so this coating was ideal for providing a non slip surface for added security.
