Acoustic solution to mezzanine floor impact noise at Aviation Academy

Hush Acoustics provided an acoustic solution for the Aviation Academy in Norwich as part of its project to transform the building through the creation of an innovative learning environment. Based within a World War 2 aircraft hangar, home to a museum, cafe and now classrooms, catering for pupils and youth organisations as well as holding events and conferences, this academy accommodates a wide variety of uses and needs. Hanson Barron and Smith Architects worked on the design of the custom facility, with the aim to create a mezzanine floor within the atrium on which classrooms would be created.The atrium itself holds conferences that can accommodate over 300 people, so in order to ensure the acoustics within the building were fit for purpose, a site visit was conducted to assess how the required acoustic standards could be achieved.On visiting the site, an acoustic concern within the building was the footfall noise being created from the mezzanine floor.The solution proposed after calculating the requirements of the areas was 1500m2 of Hush Panel 17, which would be fitted over the structural plywood deck.Hush Panel 17 is a thin overlay board which minimises floor build-up without compromising performance. By reducing impact sound transmission through the separating floors, it achieves excellent results, with the upper layer of moisture resistant MDF providing a consistently smooth surface for application of floor finishes.Working with Robert Goss from Hanson Barron and Smith and RG Carter who were the main contractors on site, over 2000 sheets of Hush Panel 17 were supplied and fitted to the area.
TERRABASE CLASSIC FOR PODIUM FLOORS AT RESIDENTIAL DEVELOPMENT IN ESSEX

Chelmer Waterside near Chelmsford in Essex, is a residential-led riverside quarter, delivering new homes and public spaces south-east of the city centre. The site of a former gas works, the land is being regenerated to offer high quality affordable housing on the River Chelmer peninsula.SURFACING REQUIREMENTAddagrip approved contractor The TP Group was appointed by Taylor Wimpey to assist with various aspects of the project, including Landscaping, Painting, and Fire Protection. They were also pleased to help with a very demanding first floor level crescent and second floor walkway within the heart of the ongoing development.Many logistical challenges of surfacing the podium decks were managed and overcome, alongside time restraints and weather conditions. The original plans of using pedestal paving were shelved due to time restraints and material availability. Following discussions, an Addagrip Terrabase Classic Resin Bound no-dig gravel system with a Stonebound finish was selected as the surfacing product due to speed of installation, aesthetics and availability.The TP Group installed a 365mm deep substrate, consisting of various materials, for the podium balconies on the first and second floor level ready for Addagrip’s Terrabase Classic resin bound system. A Stonebound 6mm bespoke blend was selected as the Terrabase Classic resin bound finish with 297m2 being installed on the first floor level crescent and 66m2 on the second floor walkway.The new paving offers a decorative, low maintenance surface with excellent slip resistance.The installation was completed in January 2021.
Large Scale Concrete Floor Tiles Installation

The project comprised of a large scale installation of Square GRC concrete floor tiles in two contrasting colours. Large Hazelnut tiles with Anti-slip Sandblast finish were laid around the main reception are. The remaining floor areas we resurfaced with Silver and Hazelnut tiles in Silk finish to emphasise the predominantly neutral colour palette of the interiors and the existing concrete structures which were left exposed.The tiles were manufactured using our special GRC BTX concrete, which is lighter and stronger than traditional concrete. We used our unique eco concrete mix technology with a hydrophobic agent to limit moisture absorption and staining. The challenges for this project were working with such large tiles that were pre-cut and only allowed for minor adjustments on site but the project was completed to a high spec for the client.
Biscuit factory use FasTop TG69 flooring solution

Resin flooring systems from Sherwin-Williams for food and drink manufacturing areas are seamless, strong, slip-resistant and safe for pedestrian traffic. Textured products including FasTop TG69 are independently tested as having low slip potential when tested with the TRRL Pendulum method promoted by the Health & Safety Executive.In order to reduce the impact on daily operations and allow food production to continue, FasTop TG69 is low odour and can be installed as quickly as possible in line with fast-track programmes to avoid disrupting manufacturing procedures as much as possible.This flooring system can withstand high temperatures, thermal exposure to reflective heat from ovens, as well as heavy impact, heavy machinery and equipment, and a high volume of footfall. It can also resist particularly harmful chemicals used as part of the Clean-In-Place CIP process such as caustic soda, nitric and phosphoric acid.

The Royal & Derngate Theatre is a mult-purpose space which can be configured for a variety of performances. Harlequin’s stage refurbishment project was the first restoration undertaken since 2005 when the theatre was first re-developed.A comprehensive multi-layered Harlequin Stage System. Harlequin fitted new battens to strengthen the stage over which a further double-layer of wood ply was installed. The stage surface was finished with a black Harlequin Standfast vinyl performance floor. The complete refurbishment project covered the entire stage area incorporating wings, lifts, orchestra pit and retractable removable seating.

Decorative and seamless flooring supplied for atrium area to Radclyffe School

A new flooring finish was required for the atrium in the Radclyffe School in Oldham, Greater Manchester.
Because the atrium floods this area of the school with so much light through a Perspex roof, it meant that whatever was chosen had to be UV stable, hard wearing and safe.
The system also had to be economic, hard-wearing, easily cleaned, have low odour during application and chemical resistance, slip resistance and non-dusting.
Sherwin-Williams’ technical flooring experts looked at their diverse range of Resuflake options for this specific application covering 800 sq metres.

This matched the ethos the client was trying to achieve in both look and finish. The product code is TW E781.

A Degafloor Approved Installer - The National Flooring Company Ltd were approached by a A 4-star hotel, in the South of England, who had decided to update their flooring system around the swimming pool. The existing floor tiles, which had started to debond posed a trip hazard and therefore needed to be replaced. The client also advised they were experiencing problems with standing water.Following the removal of the existing floor tiles, the installation of a new screed was required to build back the levels and ensure there were adequate falls in the floor for water to run back into the pool. Throughout the installation, the gym remained open, and it had been advised that the pool closure needed to be kept to an absolute minimum. The National Flooring Company installed the Degafloor Deep Fill Mortar Repair system, a fast-curing underlayment, which ensured the refurbishment programme could continue with no downtime due to curing.The existing drain was removed and replaced, along with the light box and leveller covers, which all received new stainless-steel units. A new trim was fixed around the perimeter of the pool and the Degafloor resin system, which has an excellent bond to metal surfaces, was abutted up to all the stainless-steel items. The Degafloor QTA system used within the project, is a quartz trowelled system that can be laid to falls. The system is broadcast with aggregate to provide an extremely slip resistant finish, even under wet conditions, making it ideally suited to a swimming pool surround. Coved skirting was installed around the perimeter of the room creating a completely impervious finish, with no weak spots and therefore reducing future maintenance costs. The full refurbishment was completed over 12 days, ensuring that the closure was kept to a bare minimum.The clients main requirements were they required an anti-slip floor that would eliminate the current situation they had with standing water. They specifically requested that the closure was kept to a minimum as they are a "member's club" as well as facilitating the hotel, which remained open throughout the installation. The client was extremely satisfied with the end result and felt they now have a floor finish that is much better suited to their environment.
Manchester Airport Fire Engine Workshop Floor uses FasTop TG69

This project at Manchester Airport has now been completed by Monarch Resin Floors. The previous floor was a twenty year old tile and resin cementitious screed which was decaying and water damaged. Due to the level of decay and disrepair, the floor was dug out by a third party and re-concreted ready for the resin. Monarch installed 9mm thick FasTop TG69 polyurethane screed in 3 different colours to help the fire engines to see the tyre lines when they were reversing. White line marking was also installed.The total area was about 600m2 and included six bays and six fire tenders.
Brushed Fumed Oak Basketweave Parquet in a Private Home

We were approached by Lindi Reynolds Interiors who was looking for a statement wood floor for their clients home in Surrey. The brief was for a wow-factor floor with a warm, dark hue to the Oak and a unique pattern to the floor.As we worked with the designer to identify the ideal colour tone, the TW-E931 Fumed Oak herringbone hit all the right notes for the colour, but the client wanted something more than a herringbone pattern. Drawing on experience with another project for a large development in London we suggested a basketweave parquet pattern. Our basketweave is made using our 120mm wide herringbone flooring (such as TW-E931) and a square centre piece that measures 240x240mm. By laying these components in the basketweave pattern you create a stunning statement floor. In this particular project, the client chose to lay the boards in a diagonal; creating a unique look. The engineered boards are fully bonded to the subfloor using our SW-890 adhesive. As the board construction is engineered, it’s suitable for use with underfloor heating. The expert team of BRB Flooring were able to quickly complete the fit-out according to the clients wishes and hide the perimeter expansion gap under the skirting for a sleek, professional finish.Whether for a private home, commercial space or residential development; the commercial grade UV Oiled finish is hardwearing and easy to maintain making it ideal for any setting. Laidlaw Music Centre, University of St Andrews - a moveable recital room floor

Junckers solid hardwood flooring has been installed in a state-of-the-art recital room at the Laidlaw Music Centre, University of St Andrews. The McPherson recital room is one of the world’s first chamber halls with a moveable floor – an impressive space which can be configured for a variety of performance requirements, from symphony orchestra to chamber music recitals, at the push of a button. The moveable stage and the surrounding floor in the recital room has been fitted with Junckers 22mm Oak Harmony two-strip flooring, an expressive, warm-hued floor, providing a hard-wearing flooring surface which is not only beautiful but also contributes to the excellent acoustics in the room. The floor incorporates a grid of mechanised lifts which allow an infinite variety of configurations – a world first. The oak-lined recital room is also the world’s first chamber hall with a reverberation chamber, allowing the hall to be tuned from nearly four seconds for organ and choir work down to less than a second.

The light-filled space is the ideal partner for the dark grey Spicy Pepper Oak floor, adding an elegant backdrop to the smart interior. The magnificent glass and iron structure was originally built as a flower market and now houses a restaurant and champagne bar, where events and performances also take place. A busy public area requires a hard-wearing floor which is able to withstand heavy usage. The naturally occurring structural grain patterns in oak bring a sense of warmth to the large and open hall, complementing the many original architectural features. Moy Construction Co Ltd were awarded a contract to refurb the swimming pool and changing areas at Perseid School in Surrey. The school offers an educational provision for children with difficulties and/or physical/sensory difficulties, and therefore, safety was paramount. As part of the refurbishment a hardwearing, slip-resistant flooring system that offered longevity was essential. The floor has been previously tiled, but due to water ingress, kept failing and required frequent repair. Rising maintenance costs and risk of slips prompted the school to look for alternative solutions, with resin being an obvious choice. An MMA resin floor provides a seamless, hardwearing and impermeable finish that will offer years of service. Moy Construction Co Ltd removed the existing floor tiles and installed a new screed prior to the installation of the resin system.From the offset, achieving a floor finish with a suitable slip rating was non-negotiable. The Degafloor QTA system is a quartz trowelled system which can be laid to falls. The system, which is broadcast with a quartz aggregate, provides excellent slip resistance, even in wet conditions, ensuring high levels of safety are maintained at all times.The project, which included the swimming pool surround and adjoining changing rooms, totalled 145 sqm and 135 lm of coving. The installation was completed over 5 days and to the satisfaction of Moy Construction Co Ltd, who were happy to have the project completed to a high standard, on time and within budget.
Iconic Manchester Library provided with tough and attractive Resuflor Terrazzo flooring

As part of the iconic Manchester Central Library's three-year overhaul to make its facilities more accessible, a bespoke flooring solution was supplied of Resuflor Terrazzo and Resuflor Screed to complete this refurbishment and give the buidling a great new appeal. The terrazzo provided a super smooth decorative floor and the epoxy screed incorporated fine aggregate on the surface to the stairs and ramped areas of the building to promote an anti-slip finish.The multi-million pound refurbishment project saw public entrances of the Grade ll listed building restored to their 1930's appearance. New staircases and lift shafts were inserted to improve access throughout the building.The brief on this project was to provide a modern functional flooring solution that complemented the library's unique neo-classical style.The besposke design of Resuflor Terrazzo was supplied in a special colour pallet to complement the neo-classical design features of the library. The system was chosen because of its seamless properties, ensuring a flat, continuous floor surface with extreme durability for a long term solution.The product was also used as a pre-cast terrazzo system on some central stair areas of the library.Resuflor Screed was supplied and applied on the ramped areas as a semi-decorative finish with a special aggregate bead incorporated for improved slip resistance.The end result was a functional floor capable of withstanding heavy footfall that fitted with the aesthetic requirements of the overall design superbly.

Alfresco Floors were commissioned by Chelsea Football Club to supply and install over 430sqm of EBEMA Rockstone concrete paving on Buzon pedestals to a newly refurbished pitch-side terrace.
The terrace areas located directly behind the pitch-perimeter advertising boards was built up to 200mm to create a raised terrace specially designed for wheelchair users.

We developed two engineered wood floors and advised on the subfloor build up and installation. The products chosen were initially designed by Goddard Littlefair and we worked with the designers to create two unique pallets. This is a new product and we do not have fitted pictures yet, but the images show one carton laid out.These boards were similar to some of our antique colours but the designers wanted a different hue. The TW E731 was based on our antique board but they wanted it light brushed with a matt UV oil finish rather than a lacquer.

The school offers an educational provision for children with learning difficulties and/or physical/sensory difficulties, and therefore, safety was paramount. As part of the refurbishment a hardwearing, slip-resistant flooring system that offered excellent longevity was essential. The floor had been previously tiled, but due to water ingress, kept failing and required frequent repair. Rising maintenance costs and risk of slips prompted the school to look for alternative solutions and resin became an obvious choice. A Degafloor resin floor provides a seamless, hardwearing, and impermeable finish that will offer years of service. Moy Construction Co Ltd removed the existing floor tiles and installed a new screed prior to the installation of the resin system. From the offset, achieving a floor finish with a suitable slip rating was non-negotiable.The Degafloor QTA system is a quartz trowelled system which can be laid to falls. The system, which is broadcast with a quartz aggregate, provides excellent slip resistance, even in wet conditions, ensuring high levels of safety are always maintained. The project, which included the swimming pool surround and adjoining changing rooms, totalled 145 sqm of floor and 135 lm of cove. The installation was completed over 5 days and to the satisfaction of Moy Construction Co Ltd, who were happy to have the project completed to a high standard, on time and within budget.

Koster Aquatecnic were approached to investigate flooring problems at the Hasbury Methodist Church in Halesowen. Issues relating the vapour release through the existing concrete slab was discovered, with readings above 85% RH. Dry Installs Case Study, Manhattan Loft Project, London

In Manhattan Loft gardens, they have a dry install system and are going to use the recommended system from Sika, then fit the floor fully bonded with our SW890 adhesive. Installation and site visits are part of our service. With large residential tower developments, there will normally be slabs for each floor. These will take at least two years to dry out completely. This means that unless the slabs have a DPM applied there will always be a chance of moisture affecting whatever is laid on the floor be it a cradle system or dry install underfloor heating system.
Adding Floors to an Existing Hospital, London

Lewis Deck was chosen, on this particular project in London, for a number of the key benefits the system brings. These being the strength of the system with only needing a thin concrete screed on top, the acoustic qualities & vibration control properties and the speed an ease of installation. This project even requested much longer sheets than standard in an effort to speed up the installation process. In fact you can see from the main photo above that some of the sheets were extremely long. The longest being just over 6.5m.This project was the installation of a new suspended, loadbearing concrete floor above an existing floor below. The space being used as a plant room for the hospital. The Lewis Deck was installed over a suspended steel grid of Light Gauge Steel C-section joists. A thin concrete was then installed over the top.This was a quick installation with the Lewis Deck being installed and then used as a safe working deck ahead of the screed being pumped in.
