Fabric Architecture Solutions Ltd

Bespoke Tensile Fabric Structure: The County Council wanted to give the Gateshead Stadium a contemporary new look by adding a canopy roof for the 4,000 spectator seats in the East Grand Stand. The main purpose of the tensile fabric structure was to create a greater ‘fan experience’ while enhancing the perception of the Stadium – helping it to attract big name athletes, stars and events. The Challenge: In order to keep the fan’s field of vision clear, a bespoke cantilevered tensile fabric canopy was designed. The 2,700 sqm structure incorporates a series of five flying barrel-vault forms, protecting the 4,000 seats from the elements. In order to have the structure look ‘light and airy’, steelwork was value-engineered still allowing the structure to suit the poor ground conditions, by Fabric Architecture’s expert team of tensile designers. This saved the client thousands of pounds against proposals they had received from other tendering companies. The Solution: The 90m x 30m cantilevered tensile fabric structure has no central columns, offering fans an unobstructed view of the pitch. The new tensile structure made headlines at the British Athletics Grand Prix where some of the World’s greatest track and field athletes competed. Covering the Grand Stand with fabric has increased ticket sales by attracting more families and big name stars. Gateshead has seen an exponential return on its investment.

Humidity Keeps the Spiders Happy at ZSL London Zoo

Humidity Keeps the Spiders Happy at ZSL London Zoo

Condair Limited

Condair has supplied a Condair CP3 Mini steam humidifier for the “spider nursery” at ZSL London Zoo. The compact wall-mounted humidifier provides up to 4kg of steam per hour to the atmosphere, with its built-in fan unit. This is sufficient to maintain the ideal air humidity of 70%RH, as the arachnids would have enjoyed in their indigenous habitats from around the world.Dave Clarke, ZSL’s Head of Invertebrates, comments, “Most of our spider species come from tropical forest, where the humidity is naturally high. If the atmosphere is too dry in their holding area, they would be unhealthy, unlikely to breed, and have particular difficulty in moulting their exoskeletons.”“Our spiders include the cosmotropical Huntsman spider, Mexican red-kneed spider (one of the large bird-eating, or so-called “tarantula” spiders), rare Desertas wolf spiders and Peacock Parachute spiders. The latter two are part of European Breeding Programmes, so the humidification system is playing an important role in helping us protect these threatened species.” Dave continues.“Having worked with Condair since 2008, we now rely on their steam humidifiers, which we find both efficient and easy to use. They are particularly important for our irreplaceable populations of endangered species, for example our Polynesian tree snails, many of which are now sadly extinct in the wild.” Dave concludes. The Condair CP3 Mini is ideal for small areas such as London Zoo’s spider nursery, due to its built-in fan unit and user-friendly design. The humidifier has a discrete fan incorporated into the top of its cabinet to disperse the steam into a room. This makes the humidifier very compact and is unlike most other humidifiers of its type, which are supplied with an additional bolt-on fan unit element. The CP3 Mini installed at the Spider Nursery has exposed drain and electrical connections, but it can be installed with rear entering services, to avoid visible pipes and cables. This makes the system ideal for public areas or offices, which want an attractive and discrete humidity control solution.ZSL London Zoo is the world’s oldest scientific zoo, having been formed in 1828 for scientific study and then opened to the public in 1847. The zoo has the UK’s first ever walk-through spider exhibit, where visitors can even pose for a pic with golden orb spiders, in their one metre webs, with the help of a “Spider Selfie” mirror. The zoo also operates a very successful arachnophobia curing programme, where spider-haters can be turned into spider-lovers, leaving the zoo with a new-found appreciation for arachnids.

Fabric Architecture Solutions Ltd

Bespoke Tensile Fabric Structure: As the oldest racecourse in Britain, Chester Racecourse continues to ‘up its game’, offering the absolute best in spectator services and an enhanced fan experience. Fabric Architecture supplied the latest in a series of tensile structures, this time designing a bespoke hypar-form fabric canopy to cover an outside seating area attached to one of the on-site restaurants. Fabric has proven a winning solution for Chester Racecourse. The Challenge: There is a subway system running directly below the structure. This impacted the engineering loads we could place on the ground, the location and the installation of the structure. In addition to engineering challenges, it was important that the tensile structures did not block the views of race fans. For height clearance, the hypar was selected and the tensile structures shifted slightly to over-sail the restaurant. The Solution:The 18m x 9m tensile structure was the best possible design solution. This particular fabric canopy has no tie backs for the steel frame. It’s a closed system and the framework consists of one boom arching up while the other is arching down. In order to ensure the space beneath the canopy is dry, a fabric gutter system was welded to the canopy around the edges of the structure.

The project was delivered as a ‘Shell and Floor’ development to allow the incoming tenant to complete the fit out works to their own requirements.

Mechanical smoke ventilation at Local Blackfriars

Dyer Environmental Controls Ltd

Local Blackfriars is a gated community in Salford, providing 380 apartments. A unique aspect of the residential scheme is the Grade II listed Black Friar pub merged into the development.Dyer were asked to supply and install mechanical smoke ventilation systems for the apartment blocks and the underground car parks. Dyer worked closely with Fire Design Solutions and Domis Construction over the course of the project to provide a successful outcome. When a floor goes into fire, the dampers in both shafts on the affected floor open. The chain drive on the AOV window on the affected floor opens to provide fresh inlet air. The vent at the head of the stairwell will also open. Both sets of fans work to extract the smoke and poisonous gases. On activation of a thermostat on a single floor, both the dampers on the affected floor will open. One set of fans will extract on trickle mode and the other shaft will provide fresh inlet air for the system. The vent at the head of the stair will also partly open.If the rain sensor is activated this will override and close the roof vent.If more than one thermostat operates, the dampers on the affected floors will open and be balanced to provide an equal air flow on each floor.Smoke detection in any zone will override the natural ventilation system and smoke extract will take priority.Dyer provided an eco-park® mechanical ventilation system. Advanced components and control systems allows for efficient energy usage.
