Heritage Open Gas Fireplace

Heritage Open Gas Fireplace

Kompozit'All UK

application area: domestic heatinguse type: gas fireplaceproject scope: reline leaking chimneys while maximising the flue sizeadded value: 25-year guarantee on liner, no need to fit and maintain chimney fansBackgroundTwo chimneys failed the smoke test in this heritage property located in Hertfordshire. The chimneys had to be lined to comply with fire safety regulations. Domestic chimneys often require a chimney fan after lining as traditional rigid liners restrict much of the original flue opening. Chimney fans can be expensive to fit and maintain. FuranFlex-25 linings use the maximum flue opening, which often means there's no need to fit a noisy fan.Statement of workThe had to line both chimneys and prevent further leaks before the gas fireplaces could be fitted. This was achieved using FuranFlex-25 RWV liners, which are rated for operating temperatures up to 450 degrees C. The liners were specially produced to fit the flue diameter and length, accommodating any flue bends. The soft FuranFlex liners tube are inflated using pressurised steam which will gently push the liners to extend into the chimney flue. Inflating with steam will also cause a chemical reaction which sets the material harder than steel. The finished liner is smooth, jointless and highly corrosion resistant. Thanks to the expert installation and strong product quality control, both liners are guaranteed to work for 25 years.

Gateshead Stadium, Gateshead, UK

Gateshead Stadium, Gateshead, UK

Fabric Architecture Solutions Ltd

Bespoke Tensile Fabric Structure: The County Council wanted to give the Gateshead Stadium a contemporary new look by adding a canopy roof for the 4,000 spectator seats in the East Grand Stand. The main purpose of the tensile fabric structure was to create a greater ‘fan experience’ while enhancing the perception of the Stadium – helping it to attract big name athletes, stars and events. The Challenge: In order to keep the fan’s field of vision clear, a bespoke cantilevered tensile fabric canopy was designed. The 2,700 sqm structure incorporates a series of five flying barrel-vault forms, protecting the 4,000 seats from the elements. In order to have the structure look ‘light and airy’, steelwork was value-engineered still allowing the structure to suit the poor ground conditions, by Fabric Architecture’s expert team of tensile designers. This saved the client thousands of pounds against proposals they had received from other tendering companies. The Solution: The 90m x 30m cantilevered tensile fabric structure has no central columns, offering fans an unobstructed view of the pitch. The new tensile structure made headlines at the British Athletics Grand Prix where some of the World’s greatest track and field athletes competed. Covering the Grand Stand with fabric has increased ticket sales by attracting more families and big name stars. Gateshead has seen an exponential return on its investment.

Humidity Keeps the Spiders Happy at ZSL London Zoo

Humidity Keeps the Spiders Happy at ZSL London Zoo

Condair Limited

Condair has supplied a Condair CP3 Mini steam humidifier for the “spider nursery” at ZSL London Zoo. The compact wall-mounted humidifier provides up to 4kg of steam per hour to the atmosphere, with its built-in fan unit. This is sufficient to maintain the ideal air humidity of 70%RH, as the arachnids would have enjoyed in their indigenous habitats from around the world.Dave Clarke, ZSL’s Head of Invertebrates, comments, “Most of our spider species come from tropical forest, where the humidity is naturally high. If the atmosphere is too dry in their holding area, they would be unhealthy, unlikely to breed, and have particular difficulty in moulting their exoskeletons.”“Our spiders include the cosmotropical Huntsman spider, Mexican red-kneed spider (one of the large bird-eating, or so-called “tarantula” spiders), rare Desertas wolf spiders and Peacock Parachute spiders. The latter two are part of European Breeding Programmes, so the humidification system is playing an important role in helping us protect these threatened species.” Dave continues.“Having worked with Condair since 2008, we now rely on their steam humidifiers, which we find both efficient and easy to use. They are particularly important for our irreplaceable populations of endangered species, for example our Polynesian tree snails, many of which are now sadly extinct in the wild.” Dave concludes. The Condair CP3 Mini is ideal for small areas such as London Zoo’s spider nursery, due to its built-in fan unit and user-friendly design. The humidifier has a discrete fan incorporated into the top of its cabinet to disperse the steam into a room. This makes the humidifier very compact and is unlike most other humidifiers of its type, which are supplied with an additional bolt-on fan unit element. The CP3 Mini installed at the Spider Nursery has exposed drain and electrical connections, but it can be installed with rear entering services, to avoid visible pipes and cables. This makes the system ideal for public areas or offices, which want an attractive and discrete humidity control solution.ZSL London Zoo is the world’s oldest scientific zoo, having been formed in 1828 for scientific study and then opened to the public in 1847. The zoo has the UK’s first ever walk-through spider exhibit, where visitors can even pose for a pic with golden orb spiders, in their one metre webs, with the help of a “Spider Selfie” mirror. The zoo also operates a very successful arachnophobia curing programme, where spider-haters can be turned into spider-lovers, leaving the zoo with a new-found appreciation for arachnids.
Chester Racecourse, Chester, UK

Chester Racecourse, Chester, UK

Fabric Architecture Solutions Ltd

Bespoke Tensile Fabric Structure: As the oldest racecourse in Britain, Chester Racecourse continues to ‘up its game’, offering the absolute best in spectator services and an enhanced fan experience. Fabric Architecture supplied the latest in a series of tensile structures, this time designing a bespoke hypar-form fabric canopy to cover an outside seating area attached to one of the on-site restaurants. Fabric has proven a winning solution for Chester Racecourse. The Challenge: There is a subway system running directly below the structure. This impacted the engineering loads we could place on the ground, the location and the installation of the structure. In addition to engineering challenges, it was important that the tensile structures did not block the views of race fans. For height clearance, the hypar was selected and the tensile structures shifted slightly to over-sail the restaurant. The Solution:The 18m x 9m tensile structure was the best possible design solution. This particular fabric canopy has no tie backs for the steel frame. It’s a closed system and the framework consists of one boom arching up while the other is arching down. In order to ensure the space beneath the canopy is dry, a fabric gutter system was welded to the canopy around the edges of the structure.

Local Blackfriars is a gated community in Salford, providing 380 apartments. A unique aspect of the residential scheme is the Grade II listed Black Friar pub merged into the development.Dyer were asked to supply and install mechanical smoke ventilation systems for the apartment blocks and the underground car parks. Dyer worked closely with Fire Design Solutions and Domis Construction over the course of the project to provide a successful outcome. When a floor goes into fire, the dampers in both shafts on the affected floor open. The chain drive on the AOV window on the affected floor opens to provide fresh inlet air. The vent at the head of the stairwell will also open. Both sets of fans work to extract the smoke and poisonous gases. On activation of a thermostat on a single floor, both the dampers on the affected floor will open. One set of fans will extract on trickle mode and the other shaft will provide fresh inlet air for the system. The vent at the head of the stair will also partly open.If the rain sensor is activated this will override and close the roof vent.If more than one thermostat operates, the dampers on the affected floors will open and be balanced to provide an equal air flow on each floor.Smoke detection in any zone will override the natural ventilation system and smoke extract will take priority.Dyer provided an eco-park® mechanical ventilation system. Advanced components and control systems allows for efficient energy usage.

JS Air Curtains

JS Air Curtains has supplied a Rotowind air curtain for a revolving door at the Hope University in Liverpool. The air curtain was installed by M&E Contractor, HE Simm, and is helping to maintain internal temperatures, keeping students and staff warm at the new Registry Building at the Hope Park Campus.Although revolving doors offer some protection from the outside elements, they also act like a slow moving fan, dragging in cold air with every rotation. An air curtain following the contours of the internal curve of a doorway prevents this cold air from entering the building. The Rotowind air curtain installed by HE Simm at Hope University was a black 1.5m unit with an electrical heater capable of providing up to 22.5kW.The Rotowind can be supplied in any RAL colour or stainless steel and is suitable for doorways up to 3.5m high. It is available in three different formats to accommodate different styles of revolving door. A Door-Internal unit is mounted above the door and blows warm air into its inner sections. A Room-Side unit is also mounted above the door but blows across the room-side opening, and a Room-Side External unit that blows across the room-side opening but is mounted on the inside of the building rather than above the door.Every air curtain is tailored to the dimensions of the revolving door in question. JS Air Curtains liaises with the door manufacturer and designs each Rotowind to perfectly match the contour of the door model.Heating can be supplied with an electrical heater or low pressure hot water. Air-only models are also available. The Rotowind incorporates low noise centrifugal double inlet fans driven by an external rotor motor with built-in thermal protection, capable of delivering up to 6,475m³/h of air. The unit comes with a five speed controller and 7m of plug and play RJ45 electrical cable. Additionally it can be connected to a BMS.
JS Air Curtains Stands Proud at Novotel

JS Air Curtains Stands Proud at Novotel

JS Air Curtains

In response to an unusual air curtain requirement from Accor UK & Ireland, JS Air Curtains has custom-designed an independently supported Rotowind air curtain to stand above the glass revolving entrance door at the Novotel London Paddington Hotel near Paddington Station.Accor, who own and operate Novotel, just one of its market leading hotel brands, needed to install air curtains to balance the heating requirement within the main foyer at Novotel London Paddington, which sits in an exposed position with strong winds around tall buildings in the vicinity. As Accor specifically required a horizontal air curtain, but feared the glass façade would not to be strong enough to support the weight of a standard product, technical services manager Didier Louis approached JS Air Curtains for advice. After reviewing the options, JS recommended a bespoke solution based on its 1.5m Rotowind air curtain for revolving doors, specially modified as a free standing unit supported by ‘goalpost’ legs.Having previewed JS bespoke air curtains at various premises, Accor was confident that the company’s design would blend in with the Novotel London Paddington’s unique façade. Didier Louis commented: “Our challenge was to find a product that could provide a high level of heat requirement but not be intrusive to the hotel modern interior design. It needed to match the building structure with a fixing solution above a glass top revolving door. JS Air Curtains came back with the answer that ticked all the boxes.”JS Air Curtain’s Rotowind range was designed to meet the specific conditions of a revolving door, which can act as a low-speed fan, forcing a mass of cold air into a room with each rotation. By combining a Rotowind with a revolving door system, this cold air is prevented from entering. The Rotowind’s curved air outlets can be tailored to any size of revolving door to provide a tight seal across an entrance. There are three standard mounting options. The air curtain fan unit can be placed above the revolving door with its air outlets blowing down inside the circular door chamber, it can be mounted above with its outlets blowing around the room-side of the door or it can be mounted in a suspended ceiling with its air outlets blowing around the room-side of the door.As the standard options weren’t suitable for the glass façade at Novotel London Paddington, JS Air Curtains worked with the client to produce a bespoke mounting solution. Legs fixed to the floor at the side of the entrance supported the air curtain independently of the glass revolving door. As well as bespoke mounting systems JS Air Curtains can also integrate services such as CCTV, motion detectors, smoke alarms and emergency lighting into an air curtain. The Rotowind is made of aluminium profiles and zinc plated steel panels and nozzle, finished in structural epoxy-polyester white RAL 9016 as standard with other colours available on request. The low noise centrifugal double inlet fans are driven by an external rotor motor with built-in thermal protection and provide five speed selection.
Air Curtains at Exchequer Court

Air Curtains at Exchequer Court

JS Air Curtains

JS Air Curtains has installed two vertically mounted stainless steel Rund air curtains at Exchequer Court, a multi-story office block in St Mary Axe, London. The air curtains are keeping the draughts out and providing the main heating source within the large, open atrium of the reception area. The high ceiling of the atrium and the large revolving entrance door prohibited the use of air curtains suspended from the ceiling and demanded a high heating output to counteract the cold airflow. The heating capacity of the Rund air curtain, coupled with its capability to be mounted vertically, made it an ideal choice for Exchequer Court.Building manager, John Evans, commented: “The massive cubic space of our entrance atrium was proving a challenge to heat because the revolving doors were acting as a huge fan, bringing in cold air with every turn. The Rund air curtains, positioned vertically either side of the doorway, are able to cope with this, keeping out the draught and providing sufficient heating for our reception staff. We have had no complaints of cold over the winter season and have been able to maintain a low heat output setting.”The Rund air curtain has an attractive cylindrical design and is available in five lengths from 1m to 3m with a variety of control options including thermostats, door open sensors, outside temperature sensors and timers. It can be electrically heated or water heated, with outputs ranging from 3-36kW, or supplied as an air only model.Powerful double-inlet centrifugal fans provide up to 7,400m³/h of airflow, whilst being remarkably quiet in operation. This output makes the air curtain suitable for use on doorways up to 3.5m high or 7m wide when used vertically at either side. The Rund air curtain can be fitted with many different mounting or suspension options to tie-in with an entrance’s architecture. The units can be mounted on round goal post-like supports that can stand across an entrance or shorter arms that attach it to a wall or ceiling. It can be hung with chains or poles or stood vertically at the side of the doorway, as it was at Exchequer Court.
JS Air Curtains at University College Hospital

JS Air Curtains at University College Hospital

JS Air Curtains

JS Air Curtains has supplied and installed six air curtains above the doors of the University College Hospital in London. Sets of two 1.5m stainless steel air curtains and a 2.5m curved air curtain were installed above identical doorways at both the Euston Road and Beaumont Place entrances to the hospital.A curved RotoWind air curtain was used to protect against draughts coming through the hospital’s double curved sliding doors. Both doorways automatically open in turn as someone walks through the entrance, providing a double seal to the doorway. However, at busy times both doors can be open at once so the air curtain creates a barrier of air across the internal doorway, preventing cold air from entering the hospital. The RotoWind air curtain is bespoke for the curved angle of the doorway and incorporates an electric heater with an output of up to 32kW and low noise centrifugal double inlet fans providing up to 6,475m3/h airflow. The RotoWind air curtain can also be used with revolving doors and is available in any RAL colour with electric or low pressure hot water heating and air only models. Three formats are offered with different mounting options. The motor housing can be mounted above the doorway with the semi-circular outlets blowing inside the door’s aperture. Another model is mounted above the door blowing on the room-side of the inner door opening and a third has its entire motor housing mounted room-side and blows around the room-side of the doorway. The two air curtains mounted above the swing doors to the sides of the hospital’s large circular entrance have an attractive round design and stainless steel construction. Both are 1.5m in length and incorporate electric heaters capable of delivering up to 22.5kW of heat and low noise fans providing up to 3,700m3/h of airflow. This type of designer stainless steel air curtain can suspended horizontally above a door or stood on its end and positioned to the side. It can be fitted with many different mounting or suspension options including round goal post-like supports that can attach to a wall, ceiling or stand on the floor. It can also be suspended with chains or poles to tie-in with the architecture of an entrance.
JS Air Curtains fit in at 1Rebel Gym

JS Air Curtains fit in at 1Rebel Gym

JS Air Curtains

JS Air Curtains has recently supplied two Rund air curtains to 1Rebel boutique gym in Victoria, London. Described as a “Ride studio like no other” the 1Rebel gym at Victoria fuses amazing sound systems and lighting with a full body bike workout. With two entrances into its reception, the building was suffering from a wind-tunnel effect and wanted to eliminate the draught to maintain a comfortable internal temperature for staff and customers. The nightclub-like gym needed an air curtain system to match its vibrant contemporary style.JS Air Curtains’ Rund air curtain was chosen by architects as its cylindrical design perfectly complements the industrialised and futuristic interior, and could be suspended with inverted goal-post like supports. The units were installed by mechanical contractors, TMI Mechanical Limited, who also provided the ceiling mounted suspension arms.Nina Shadi, General Manager and trainer at 1Rebel UK, commented, “Since the air curtains have been installed, we’ve noticed a considerable improvement in the internal environment. We no longer experience the draughts through our wide doorways and the temperature is much more pleasant.”The Rund air curtain has rounded casing that comes in white or silver as standard but can be supplied in any RAL colour or with a brushed stainless steel finish. It can be suspended horizontally above a doorway, as it is at 1Rebel, or vertically at the sides of an entrance. When mounted horizontally, it has many different suspension options, including goal post-like arms fitted to the floor, wall or ceiling.Low noise, centrifugal double inlet fans are driven by an external rotor motor. The powerful fans are capable of providing enough airflow to create an effective seal across doorways up to 4.2m high or 8.4m wide, when mounted vertically at each side. The 1Rebel gym at Victoria is part of the 1Rebel group which has six locations across London. It offers three pay-per-session fitness concepts of either Reshape (treadmill and weights), Ride (bike / nightclub experience) or Rumble (high intensity boxing training). The new concept in boutique fitness was designed by Giles Dean and James Balfour, son of previous Fitness First owner Mike Balfour.
Air Curtains Collaboration at Drapers Hall

Air Curtains Collaboration at Drapers Hall

JS Air Curtains

Air curtain specialist, JS Air Curtains, and entrance specialist, Blue Chyp, have recently supplied and installed four revolving door air curtains at Drapers Garden office complex in the City of London.Blue Chyp was called in by its partners, Boon Edam, who had installed four revolving doors at the impressive 16 floor office complex to provide front and rear access to the reception hall. Constant use of the doors was creating severe draughts through the foyer and causing discomfort to the reception staff, resident employees and the building’s many visitors. Believing air curtains could be the solution, Blue Chyp turned to JS Air Curtains.Adam Pressland commented for Blue Chyp: “We thought air curtains would solve the draught problem at Drapers Gardens but needed an expert to help us specify appropriate eco-friendly units to meet the heating requirement while keeping electricity consumption low.“JS Air Curtains has provided the ideal air curtain in the Rotowind G1500E, which was designed specifically for use with revolving doors. Working closely with the JS project management department, our design team subsequently fabricated bespoke plenum covers, matching the structure of the four entrance doors, to camouflage the Rotowind units.”Black Rock, the asset managers for Drapers Gardens, has been delighted with the improved comfort and reduced energy costs that the joint collaboration between Blue Chyp and JS Air Curtains has delivered. Jason Tothill, from managing agents Norland Managed Services, commented: “We could not be more pleased with the function and performance of the Rotowind air curtains. The added requirement that they should blend aesthetically with the entrance décor has been a triumph for Blue Chyp.”JS Air Curtains’ Rotowind range was designed to meet the specific conditions of a revolving door, which can act as a low-speed fan, forcing a mass of cold air into a room with each rotation. By combining a Rotowind with a revolving door system, cold air is prevented from entering. The main body of the Rotowind air curtain is mounted above the door with the curved air outlets creating a barrier around the inner opening of the doorway. Each unit is created to exactly match the curvature of the specific model of revolving door. The Rotowind is made of aluminium profiles and zinc plated steel panels and nozzle, and was finished in natural anodised silver for Drapers Gardens. The low noise centrifugal double-inlet fans are driven by external rotor motors, with built-in thermal protection, and provide five-speed selection.

Two fifteen-story residential towers, like a pair of ballerinas, soar upwards high above the northernmost Salford Quays in Manchester. Slender backs linked together, they fan out towards the water and have earned the title the “Duet”. Anyone who moves into one of these apartments in the middle of the new Media City is part of the transformation and economic boom which, over the last twenty years, has seen Manchester change from an industrial city with high rates of unemployment into a trendy location for the creative, cultural and media industries. The city of subcultures has long since become a strong location for financial and service sectors, and has to offer appropriate housing. So, the Duet offers higher-priced accommodation with a sophisticated but youthful and fashionable interior. The tower’s façade, in glass and ALUCOBOND® tray panels, falls into angular folds and, like the position of the two buildings themselves, responds to its location. Because however much Manchester may change, one thing remains the same: there is less sunshine here than in other parts in England. Autumn brings grey skies and rain; sunshine hours are rare during this time. Thanks to mild temperatures, this does not change even in winter. So those who can afford to, make the most of the scarce sunlight by opening their apartments up to face south and stretching upwards high above the horizon. People living on the higher floors of the towers on the Quays, therefore, are less likely to be affected by autumnal melancholy. The angled, fan-shaped façade, featuring floor-to-ceiling glazing on all the south-facing surfaces, allows more light to flood into the apartments and offers exclusive, uninterrupted views all the way to Manchester United's stadium over the lower neighbouring buildings. At the same time, the orientation of the two towers ensures a good deal of privacy in the apartments. Incidentally, the ALUCOBOND® tray panels in three different shades of red and with different levels of gloss, echo the city’s colour palette: the dominant tone in Manchester is reddish-brown, like the naturally aged, different hues of brick. This duet of glass and ALUCOBOND® unites both: the old, rust-red Manchester, as well as the new one, with its glass clad skyscrapers.Project: Erie Basin, Manchester | United KingdomArchitect: Sheppard Robson Architects, London | United KingdomFabricator: Premo Fabrications, Newton Aycliffe | United KingdomInstaller: FK Group, Altrincham | United KingdomFaçade System: Tray Panels on boltsYear of Construction: 2019Product: ALUCOBOND® A2 solid Pigmento RedPhotos & Drawings: John Kees Photography & Premo Fabrications + FK Group

Ventilated Nursery, Raised Steel Floor - Gothenburg, SE

Floor Levelling Systems Ltd

SubFloor flooring was used to help renovate, raise and ventilate a 700 m² floor into a Nursery near Gothenburg, Sweden. The Subfloor ventilation system was ideal for this nursery, as it allowed for multiple floor height adjustments and for ventilation installations under the floor. Associated floor ventilation material such as ducts, air distribution strips, fans, etc. was also provided. The negative pressure the ventilation generates under the floor creates a fresh and healthy indoor environment. This simple and elegant solution raised and levelled the floor to allow for installations and insulation. The joist and screw system allows for quick and easy assembly so that the floor can reach the desired height.Products:Steel Joist 45x30x3800 mmSubFloor Screw 100 mmInsulation Bearer 45 mmHeight Variation: 46 - 100 mmJoist separation: c/c 600 mmSystem Weight - c/c 600 mm: 2.06 kg/m²Materials:Steel, Z100 GalvFibre-reinforced polypropylenePoint Load Limit (50 x 50 mm): Between screws over joist - 7.08 kNOver screws over joist - 8.78 kN
Air Curtain at Marconi Building

Air Curtain at Marconi Building

JS Air Curtains

JS Air Curtains has supplied a bespoke Zen air curtain for use at the Marconi Building in The Strand, London. The Marconi Building is an imposing Grade II listed building containing prestigious luxury apartments and penthouses. The air curtain was specified to match the same colour as the entrance of the building, thereby meeting both aesthetic and functional objectives.Air curtains seal an entrance with an invisible barrier of air, preventing cold air entering in the winter and air conditioning escaping in the summer. A comfortable temperature can then be maintained within the room and a building’s energy costs reduced. The Zen is part of JS Air Curtains’ Designer Range and has a contemporary architectural style. It can be fitted with bespoke fascia panels of different materials and any RAL colour, and can also carry signage, branding or even elements such as clocks. It is available in 0.5m lengths from 1m to 2.5m, with electric or water heaters or as a non-heated, air only model.Low noise, double inlet centrifugal fans with external rotor motors provide up to 6,475m3/h airflow making it suitable for use on doorways up to 3.5m. The control panel has five speed selection and is easy to connect to the air curtain with 7m of plug and play RJ45 lead. The Zen can also be controlled via BMS.
