Designing For NOMA: Manchester’s Landmark New Community

The Splash Lab Limited

NOMA is a new breed of mixed-use development in the centre of Manchester, a multi-phase scheme to create a 20-acre neighbourhood with a strong sense of community, built to world-class sustainability standards. For the public and accessible toilets in this building on the NOMA commons, architects Simpson Haugh implemented a Superloo layout interspersed with DDA-compliant cubicles. The Splash Lab was privileged to work with Simpson Haugh closely over many years to bring this vision to life with taps and accessories from our Radius Collection in a bronze PVD finish, as well as a Monolith DDA basin. Our comprehensive support for superloo designs helped achieve an efficient installation that doesn’t sacrifice clean, minimalist design. The contemporary bronze finish of the fittings provides a rich contrast with the white panelling and basin to create a washroom that looks both luxurious and streamlined.

Willesden Sports Centre, London, UK

Polytan Sports Surfaces (UK) Ltd.

Rekortan M (Re-Topping) and Polytan SMART at Willesden Sports Centre, LondonTHE POWER OF SPORTWillesden Sports Centre is a fitness, leisure and community centre in North London. In Willesden, a neighbourhood not far from the famous Wembley Stadium, there is an expansive sports complex that includes the whole of King Edward VII Park. The complex encompasses two swimming pools, a fitness studio, a sports hall with a 60-metre indoor track and four courts, as well as steam rooms and saunas. For outdoor sports, there is an athletics facility with six 400-metre lanes and an integrated sprinting track with two additional lanes, along with facilities for various jumping and throwing disciplines. All the lanes of the athletics track were renewed with Rekortan M in brick red in the course of a full renovation in 2022. The consistency of the Rekortan M tread strikes the perfect balance between excellent shock absorption and maximum acceleration – properties that are appreciated by both middle-distance and short-distance runners alike. All the running and run-up tracks were refurbished using the re-topping process. This means that used and worn synthetic surfaces are completely technically and cosmetically restored. Re-topping is not only an extremely economical and explicitly sustainable solution for the renovation of sports facilities. It also allows the existing elastic substructures to remain in place, rather than being disposed of.The athletics facility at Willesden Sports Centre was also fitted with two Polytan SMART systems for the precise measurement and documentation of training performance. On one of the running tracks and sprinting tracks, athletes can conduct agility tests, jumping tests, endurance tests and sprint tests. Multiple Polytan SMART timing gates are integrated in the lanes. The athletics facility at Willesden Sports Centre can be booked by schools and clubs. Among them are the Willesden Triathlon Club and, in particular, the Track Academy. At the latter, former international athletes, coaches, mentors and teachers are of the belief that sport and education have the power to change people’s lives for the better. Under the motto “The Power of Sport”, they support disadvantaged young people to realise their potential and develop in a positive way. This includes building their self-confidence, affirming their self-worth and helping them to find the courage to acquire new skills and to plan and shape their own future.Currently, almost 400 young athletes train at the Track Academy at Willesden Sports Centre every week. We share this belief in the social power of sport, especially for disadvantaged children and young people, and are proud to support the goals of the Track Academy with our surfaces and our Polytan SMART system.

Colour Matters: 6 Essentials For Designing Changing Places

Colour Matters: 6 Essentials For Designing Changing Places

Astor Bannerman

In our built environment, the significance of colour often goes overlooked. Yet, colour has a profound impact on our emotions, behaviours, and overall well-being. This rings especially true in spaces like Changing Places toilets, where accessibility and inclusivity are paramount. In this blog, we’ll explore how the thoughtful application of colour can positively influence individuals with disabilities in Changing Places toilets, creating environments that promote comfort, safety, and dignity. It's crucial to acknowledge the diverse range of disabilities that users of Changing Places toilets may have. From physical impairments to sensory sensitivities, each individual’s needs must be considered when designing these spaces. Colour can play a pivotal role in addressing these needs by providing visual cues, enhancing wayfinding, and fostering a welcoming atmosphere. Here are a few things to consider when designing your Changing Places Toilet:One. Colour ContrastFor individuals with visual impairments, high colour contrast can aid navigation and identification of key elements within the restroom, such as grab bars, door handles, and signage.Bold colours like blue or red against neutral backgrounds can draw attention to important features, making them easier to perceive for those with limited vision.Two. Mood EnhancementMoreover, colour can influence mood and emotional well-being. Bright, cheerful hues like blues and greens can evoke feelings of calmness and tranquillity, contributing to a more relaxed and positive restroom experience. Conversely, harsh or jarring colour schemes may provoke anxiety or discomfort, particularly for individuals with sensory processing disorders or autism spectrum disorders.Three. Psychological BenefitsAnother aspect to consider is the psychological impact of colour on hygiene and cleanliness perceptions. Light, neutral tones such as white or pastels can create an impression of cleanliness and sterility, instilling confidence in the restroom’s hygiene standards. Incorporating antibacterial coatings or materials can further enhance this perception, promoting a sense of safety and well-being among users.Four. Differentiating ZonesFurthermore, colour can be used to differentiate functional zones within the restroom, facilitating intuitive navigation and usage. For example, using a distinct colour palette for the toilet area versus the sink and changing station areas can help users orient themselves more easily, especially for those with cognitive or memory impairments.Five. Branding Your Changing PacesIn addition to its practical benefits, colour can also be a powerful tool for expression and identity. By incorporating elements of personalisation and cultural relevance into the design. Artwork, murals, or decorative accents inspired by local traditions or themes can create a sense of belonging and pride among users, fostering a more meaningful connection to the space.Six. HewiOur accessories partner, HEWI, is particularly focused on colour. HEWI’s commitment to colour-focused accessibility solutions has significantly contributed to the inclusive design of Changing Places toilets. Their innovative products and expertise in colour psychology have played a crucial role in creating environments that prioritise both accessibility and aesthetics. To ConcludeUltimately, the thoughtful application of colour in Changing Places toilets can enhance accessibility, comfort, and dignity for individuals with disabilities. By considering the unique needs and preferences of diverse user groups, designers and architects can create inclusive environments that promote independence, confidence, and well-being for all.In conclusion, colour is not merely a decorative element but a powerful tool for enhancing the accessibility and inclusivity of Changing Places toilets. From aiding navigation and wayfinding to promoting emotional well-being and hygiene perceptions, the strategic use of colour can transform these spaces into welcoming and empowering environments for individuals of all abilities.

Prospect Park Playground - Battersea

DCM Surfaces

DCM Surfaces recently completed work on one of Europe’s most significant construction projects – the redevelopment of Prospect Park Playground at the legendary Battersea Power Station.Prospect Park took inspiration from the power station’s iconic chimneys and brickwork patterns and was designed to be a vision of colour. The playground features areas suitable for all ages, allowing children to discover fun new climbable elements as they age.Careys Construction was the successful bidder for the contract. Following a rigorous selection process based on quality, cost and Health and Safety, DCM Surfaces were selected to install the synthetic surfacing for the playground. As part of the redevelopment scheme, DCM installed over 500m2 of Wetpour at various depths and colours. DCM worked closely with the contractor and architect to ensure that the ground was correctly prepared before installation and that suitable Wetpour RAL colours were used to blend in with the surrounding architecture.Wetpour provided a soft, impact-absorbing layer and achieved the maximum 3m Critical Fall Height required around the timber play equipment. Eight colours of Wetpour were used with an aliphatic binder to create colourful surfaces around the play equipment area and ensure no discolouration of the play area over time. One of the critical challenges DCM faced working on the largest construction site in Europe was related to logistics. All haulage vehicles entering the area were required to be FORS Gold, and a ticketing system for the entry of deliveries often resulted in materials being held for long periods in the queuing system.Regardless of the delays in material deliveries, the installation took place within the tight time frame allocated. The Mayor of Wandsworth, who officially opened the new children’s playground, said:“I would like to congratulate all those involved in delivering this exciting outdoor space, which is a great addition to the new riverside neighbourhood created at Battersea Power Station. I’m sure many families and children from the local community will enjoy hours of fun here.”

Chester Zoo sensor taps

Chester Zoo sensor taps

Ecoprod Technique

Ranked as the best zoo in Europe, and the third best zoo in the world, Chester Zoo, in Cheshire, UK, has long-been considered a pioneering attraction that many other zoos aspire to. With over 1.8 million visitors a year, the Zoo has specified CONTI+ sensor taps for its visitor washrooms as part of a number of water-saving initiatives .In 2018, the Zoo started a refurbishment project of its washroom facilities, choosing the CONTI+ Ultra sensor taps for all their washbasins. Ecoprod– a Conti+ distribution partner and supplier of environmental washroom solutions was the link that enabled this project to happen, through a consultation process.“Working with the Mechanical Services Supervisor at Chester Zoo has been very straightforward as his hands on experience and knowledge of this sector is comprehensive. We provided a few products to install in both ladies and gents washrooms for a trial period to get feedback from staff and other stakeholders. The Ultra tap was quite quickly considered by all to be the preferred choice and was therefore specified going forwards for all washroom refurbishment works”Marcus Rose, Sales Manager Ecoprod.Ultra is one of the most innovative sensor tap solutions from CONTI+. It works particularly well for leisure spaces and attractions as it can be powered by battery, turbine or solar, avoiding the need for electricity in the tap area. The battery lasts for up to four years, meaning maintenance is minimal and, when it is time to change the battery this can be done quickly and easily through an access point on the top of the product avoiding labour intensive access into vanity units. From an environmental and cost-saving perspective, the Ultra ticks all the boxes. Great design, with sophisticated sensor function, water saving can reach an impressive 70% compared with a more traditional tap. And in attractions, with a high volume of users, the touch free system provides a more hygienic way to wash hands, reducing the spread of germs and ensuring each user has a clean tap to use.Of course, as a Swiss-designed and assembled product, manufactured in the Conti+ facilities in Switzerland, Chester Zoo can rest assured that the Ultra taps are built to last and will work first time, every time.
