WAREHOUSE - PROJECT TRIATHLON - STAIR NOSING AND CAP & COVE

WAREHOUSE - PROJECT TRIATHLON - STAIR NOSING AND CAP & COVE

Quantum Flooring Solutions, a trading name of Quantum Profile Systems Ltd

The ProjectProject Triathlon was conceived as a new build warehouse development at DP World London Gateway. It was designed specifically for use by DHL Supply Chain, the world’s leading contract logistics provider. This brand-new structure would have an internal volume equivalent to 645 Olympic-size swimming pools.Shire Flooring Ltd was employed as the flooring contractor for this huge project. As the new warehouse involved areas which would be used for differing purposes, a range of floorings would be necessary throughout the facility. This meant that a range of flooring accessories would also be needed, to complement the different floorcoverings. The ApproachShire Flooring spoke to Quantum Flooring about supplying the accessories for the project. They would need cove formers and capping strips, to be fitted with resilient floorcoverings. Two types of stair nosings would also be necessary; one to be fitted onto wooden steps, and one to be used on carpeted staircases.Quantum’s QCF35 cove former would be used to curve the vinyl at the floor-to-wall junctions, protecting the floorcovering from damage at the join and making it easier to clean. UCS1 flexible capping strips were selected in both black and white for a mix of colour designs in different parts of the building. These would create a neat finish to the floorcovering up the wall.On the carpeted staircases, Quantum’s ZHF1 stair nosings were chosen. These heavy-duty profiles were fitted with mist coloured tread material, to contrast with the black carpet. For the wooden flooring, ZF125R stair nosings were used. These profiles have a ramped back, so they can be fitted straight onto wood or concrete steps without creating a slip hazard. Black inserts were used to contrast with the natural wood colouring. The stair nosings were fitted using Q-Fix, Quantum’s contact adhesive. Q-Fix is a single solution to fix Quantum stair nosings, with no need for screws or plugs. With a strong and durable bond, there is no more reliable stair nosing adhesive on the market. The OutcomeShire Flooring completed their work on Project Triathlon in 2022. By the end of the project, they had fitted an immense 3000sqm of flooring. They had also fitted 400m of Quantum stair nosings, and 200m of Quantum capping strips and cove formers.Quantum’s UCS1 capping strips in both white and black look great in the warehouse, with the QCF35 cove former assisting in protecting the integrity of the floorcovering where it meets the wall.Meanwhile, the ZHF1 and ZF125R stair nosings look fantastic on their respective staircases. With Quantum’s slip resistant tread material, they are helping to prevent slips, trips, and falls for the many workers at the facility.Shire Flooring did excellent work with Quantum Flooring products in this extensive project. DHL Supply Chain can be happy with a great design scheme, along with products that will keep its workers safe going into the future.

ASF Bexhill Post and Rail, Bexhill on Sea

Architectural Street Furnishings part of WB White Foundry

HTA Architects designed the Next Wave scheme to renovate the seafront and public realm surrounding the Grade 1 listed modernist De La Warr pavilion. The CABE Seachange Funded project which aims to make the area a more attractive place for residents and visitors to Bexhill, and a catalyst for economic regeneration of this seaside resort. When Bexhill on Sea needed a new barrier for the seafront promenade, Architectural Street Furnishings (ASF) was contacted to look at the project. For harsh coastal environments, ASF would typically advise the use of cast iron products, however the client brief requested the barrier was constructed from aluminium, in a design that was sympathetic to the architecture of the De La Warr pavilion.Aluminium is not renowned for being particularly durable in coastal environments. To ensure the barrier would withstand the environmental conditions over time, ASF had the aluminium hard anodised. The anodising process involved the immersion of aluminium in a bath of sulphuric acid (an electrolyte) and running a low voltage electrical current through the bath. Normal anodising results in a thin coating of aluminium oxide (rust) on the surface of the material, hard anodising is achieved by cooling the solution to freezing temperature and increasing the amount of electric current that is passed through the bath.Hard anodising produces a much thicker coating of aluminium oxide, rendering the finished material only a few hardness points below diamond and protecting it against harsh environments such as the salt at the coast. The client agreed the simple clean lines of the design and a machined aluminium cap was added to finish off the modern and stylish barrier. The finished result is a low maintenance, minimalist seafront barrier that will not pitt or corrode over time. The use of anodised aluminium enabled the client's brief to be matched without the need for compromise.

Gatwick Airport

Savortex Ltd

The ClientWates Smart Space provides Facilities Management services to Gatwick Airport, London. Gatwick is the second-busiest airport in the UK by passenger traffic by volume of annual passengers of around 45m, making London Gatwick the biggest single runway Airport in the World. The airport owners, Global Infrastructure Partners (GIP) have a desire to meet their sustainability targets, to reduce the energy consumption of their estate and introduce operational efficiencies throughout the estate.Their ProblemThe estates washrooms use a mixed range of high speed hand dryers, with power ratings ranging between 1600 and 2300 watts. These dryers are energy hungry costing the estate £0.0044 to £0.00192 per dry, and the units have a high motor failure rate. Further, the estate manager has no way of remotely monitoring washroom hand dryer usage for responsive cleaning against sudden and peak usage surges. Our SolutionSAVORTEX deployed its EcoCurve 550D Smart hand dryer on a trial basis in the male washrooms in the South Terminal where there is high footfall. The EcoCurve Smart uses an advanced digital brush-less motor technology, which consumes power of just 550W and offers 10x more operational life than traditional dryers. The EcoCurve smart dryer uses its patented in-built sensors wirelessly reporting energy usage per dry to the SAVORTEX web portal, allowing estates managers remote access to manage washroom facilities. Over the trial period the estates manager was able to monitor hand dryer usage and washroom footfall of 14,100 pairs of hands being dried, resulting in a consumption of 14.90 KG of C02, and run responsive cleaning schedules based on footfall, introducing new operational efficiencies throughout the estate.

THE PROJECTThe Jackson fire rated project features freestanding mailboxes that conform to the BS476 Part 6 & 7. The small bank of fire rated mailboxes are installed internally in a residential building to securely store mail for residents. The mailboxes have the use of support legs which are secured to the concrete floor with heavy-duty fixings. Support stands are colour coded to match the same finish as the bank of mailboxes.Mailboxes that meet the BS476 Part 6 & 7 will satisfy the demands of fire protection in most cases, and provide an affordable alternative if the surface spread of flame and non-flammable materials are acceptable. The mailboxes feature an inward sprung flap, which is a standard feature across the fire rated mailbox range. An intumescent strip is placed on the internal side of the mail flap, which expands when the temperature increases and ensures that the flap is kept closed – stopping the oxygen flow into the mailbox and reducing the risk of fire spreading through the mailbox. An alternative fire rated solution is that mailboxes are manufactured to meet the BS476 Part 22, this group of products contain a series of features and benefits that result in a ‘one-hour integrity’ rating. Conningbrook Lakes is a modern development of what will be over 300 new, state of the art homes, situated beside the beautiful lakes and rural scenery of Ashford, Kent.A timeless reimagining of the traditional Kentish village, a variety of homes to suit all tastes and lifestyles have been created using Alumasc Rainwater Infinity steel gutters and downpipes.Phil Lapping, Regional Sales Manager and Estimator at Gutterworks Limited, who supplied all rainwater management systems, said: “This beautiful new development deserves nothing less than the best.“Having been built to a high standard by Chartway Construction on behalf of Westerhill Homes and Latimer, it was specified that all water management was to maintain the overall look and feel of each property. On many of the houses there are modern stainless-steel balconies, therefore, to put plastic gutters and drainpipes on these houses, although functional, just wouldn’t look right.“Additionally, the environmental benefits of a steel system vastly outweigh that of a plastic system, which was an important factor in the decision-making process.”Alumasc Rainwater Infinity stainless steel gutters and drainpipes were the most natural choice.Finishing the houses to the best standard possible meant ensuring all accessories matched and upheld the high standards of Chartway Construction and Alumasc.Rainwater Infinity Steel was developed by Alumasc to offer a contemporary, eco-friendly and cost-effective alternative to plastic gutters, that look sleek and have no risk of shrinking, leaking or colour fading.

It offers bucket elevators, conveyors, pipes, silos, warehouses, milling machines, feed producing equipment, heat treatment devices, and accessories.Project/doors: 21 Speedor Storm High Speed DoorsThe challenge Gerico France delivered a turn-key flour mill project in Mombasa, Kenya for a Grain milling company at their state of the art milling plant. They required a solution to stop dust going out of the building instead of being aspirated by the installed system when emptying grain trucks into the wheat grain intake pit.The solutionHart installed three Speedor Storm doors from 4m wide x 5m high to 7m high. The Speedor Storm is the next generation of large external door which has improved wind resistance on both sides of the door and is suitable for larger openings, greater than 6m. This door does not require separate wind bars as the curtain contains wind bracing every 1m and is held securely into the guide channels with rollers at either side. The success Hart Doors sent an experienced engineer to Mombasa to supervise and assist in the installation and commissioning of the doors along with the training of staff to install future orders. 18 more Speedor Storms were ordered for a specialised dry bulk discharge and handling terminal for grain imports, located in Shimanzi, Mombasa.

Waterproofing an Air Traffic Control Tower, Scotland

Waterproofing an Air Traffic Control Tower, Scotland

Newton Waterproofing Systems

Heavy rainfall on the Orkney Islands meant that the basement room of Kirkwall Air Traffic Control Tower suffered from frequent flooding, with water levels reaching 1.2m at their highest point. Newton Waterproofing and Specialist Contractor Wise Basement Systems were called in to remove the existing water and then waterproof the structure to protect it from future flooding, all in just one week.Kirkwall airport is located on the main island of the Orkneys, 10-miles off the North coast of Scotland. Presented with a logistically challenging location and a tight project timescale of just 1 week, Newton had no hesitation in recommending the expertise of Wise Basement Systems as the specialist contractor to Building Surveyor Pick Everard.Getting involved at the very start of the project, Wise were immediately able to design, advise on and install a system to remedy the 2 inches of water in the existing basement of the Air Traffic Control tower.Cavity Drain Waterproofing, or ‘Type C’ waterproofing as it is defined by BS 8102:2009 is often the most effective means of achieving a completely dry ‘Grade 3’ environment in an existing structure below ground. It was therefore no surprise that Wise Basement Systems designed a Newton CDM System for this existing basement area.To begin, Wise installed 120m2 of Newton 508 on the walls and 80m2 of the recycled Newton 520 eco to the floor, above the closed-cell Fibran XPS 500-C insulation. The drainage membranes were supplemented with a perimeter channel of Newton Basedrain, directed to a Titan-Pro sump chamber containing two NP400 Pumps to remove the water. Finally, to ensure that the system will continue to work in all eventualities, even in a complete power outage, Wise installed a backup system with dual Northstar batteries and a Victron Power Inverter.Even with a project located 10 miles from the mainland, and 1 week to waterproof a basement with only a 600mm wide access hatch, Wise Basement Systems delivered a completely dry space for the client that was also compliant with BS 8102:2009 and backed by their guarantee.
